So, actually, High Speed Train in East Coast of China is already enough~!

A high-speed rail linking Tibet simply doesn't make sense right now. There is already a new airport in Lhasa for visitors who wish to arrive in Tibet quickly. The new railroad is probably just for moving goods.

I don't think it is a high speed train, it's just a train, and very usefull because plane is too expensive and road can't help supply the area in merchandises /mining in tibet may be considered now/.
By the way, aren't this the highest tracks on earth? I think I heard something like that...

express? r u sure? it only takes 8hours now from beijing to shanghai if you take non-stop express, basically you take the train in the evening and you get a good sleep and you arrive in the morning. beijing shanghai are 1000 km apart! more than the distance between wuhan and shanghai. and it's no high speed, just conventional, the high speed hasnt been built yet.
hkskyline March 8th, 2005, 10:02 PM China's Qinghai-Tibet railway to start trial operation in 15 months
BEIJING, March 7 (AFP) - Track laying for China's Qinghai-Tibet railway will be completed by the end of this year and the world's highest railway will begin trial operation on July 1, 2006, state media said Monday.
Minister of Railways Liu Zhijun made the announcement Monday on the sidelines of the national parliament's annual meeting, the National People's Congress, the Xinhua news agency said.
Construction of the 1,142-kilometer (713-mile) railway started in 2001 and the project will cost 26.2 billion yuan (3.16 billion dollars).
After it officially opens to traffic in 2007, the railway is expected to link Tibet's capital Lhasa with Xining, the capital of northwest China's Qinghai province, as well as Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai and Guangzhou cities, Xinhua said.
Tibet currently does not have a railway system.
China revealed last year it was forced to pump another 5.5 billion yuan into the original budget for the project to ensure the railway opened on time.
In December, Xinhua said 738 kilometers (457 miles) of track had been laid.
The project has been criticised by Tibetans' rights advocates who say that while it could bring economic benefits, it was part of an effort to encourage Han Chinese migrants to settle in Tibet, which China brought under its control in 1951 following an invasion of the Himalayan region.
Sen March 8th, 2005, 11:31 PM why dont they build sichuan-tibet railway? isn't it shorter?
Pangu March 8th, 2005, 11:52 PM why dont they build sichuan-tibet railway? isn't it shorter?
Qinghai is underdeveloped just like Tibet, when compared to rest of the country, especially the coastal regions.
Sichuan is already well-connected.
Besides, this railroad will link to Chengdu as well.
7 World Trade March 17th, 2005, 03:32 AM from what i know, they already built a railroad running from xining to the base of the tibetan plateau at town called golmud many years before the tibetan railway project went underway. so, they only have to build the tibetan railway and connect it to it. however, there's no railroad built like that from sichuan, so a qinghai-tibet railway is still shorter.
this is gonna be the greatest accomplishment in railroad building ever since the chunnel.
visitant March 18th, 2005, 03:57 PM why dont they build sichuan-tibet railway? isn't it shorter?
it shorter but absolutely more difficult, when Chinese built chuan-zang(sichuan to tibet) road in 1950s, it costed 1 life every 3 kms, ( the road is 2400kms)
visitant March 18th, 2005, 04:11 PM Sorry, I search on the net, and... really been shocked.
the right number is over 3000 died in the construction, and 647 died in last 50 years for maintaining this road.
hkskyline May 26th, 2005, 04:20 AM Swiss-Swedish ABB wins 18.1 mln yuan contract for China Qinghai-Tibet railway
25 May 2005
BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - ABB Ltd, a Swiss-Swedish power and automation technology company, said it has signed an 18.1 mln yuan contract with Qinghai Electric Power Co to deliver gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) to the Qinghai-Tibet railway.
In a statement, ABB said it will supply seven circuit breaker bays of GIS to the 1,956-kilometer long railway, the world's highest, between northwestern China's Qinghai province and Tibet in the southwest.

hkskyline June 24th, 2005, 06:50 AM Global warming poses threat to Tibet rail link
Reuters
June 24, 2005
Rising temperatures on the "roof the world'' threaten China's controversial railway link across the snow-covered Tibetan plateau, the China Daily said Thursday.
The pan-Himalayan rail project, which began in 1958, eight years after mainland troops invaded Tibet, is expected to be finished by the end of this year.
"By 2050, safe operation of the Qinghai-Tibet railway will be affected if temperatures keep rising steadily as observed over past decades,'' Luo Yong, deputy director of the National Climate Center, was quoted as saying.
Winter and summer temperatures on the Tibetan plateau could jump as much as 3.4 degrees Celsius by 2050, causing normally frozen ground under the rail line to melt, the China Daily said. Many climatologists consider the plateau a "magnifier'' of global climate change and an indicator of warming trends across East Asia, it said.
The railway will span 2,040 kilometers from Xining in Qinghai province, to the capital of Tibet, Lhasa.
China says the rail link will promote development and help raise living standards in the impoverished region, while Tibet activists say it will speed up the pace of Chinese migration to the area and dilute Tibetan culture.
Luo issued his warning at a symposium on climate change in Beijing, which has been simmering under temperatures as high as 40C in a heat wave that has struck northern China.

hkskyline June 28th, 2006, 05:09 PM China to extend Tibetan railway to Indian border: report
BEIJING, June 28, 2006 (AFP) - With the new Qinghai-Tibet railway to Lhasa going into service on July 1, China unveiled plans Wednesday for extending the national rail network to the border with India, state media reported.
Within the next 10 years, China hoped to build a railway line to the Tibetan town of Chomo near a Himalayan border pass to the Indian state of Sikkim, the China News Service (CNS) reported.
Up to 10 billion yuan (1.2 billion dollars) would be invested in building new railways in the Tibetan region in the coming 10 years, said the report, citing Tibetan officials.
The Qinghai-Tibet railway is the first railway to the Tibetan region and rises more than 5,000 metres (16,500 feet) above sea-level as it climbs up to the Tibetan plateau from Qinghai province to the north.
Opponents of the multi-billion dollar railway have long expressed fears that it will lead to increased numbers of Han Chinese moving into the Himalayan region, further eroding Tibet's Buddhist culture.
Tibet has been ruled by China since its troops "liberated" the region in 1950. Crackdowns on Tibetans clamouring for greater autonomy or independence from Beijing's rule are routine.
The planned railways included a line extending west from Lhasa to Shigatse and another line heading east from Lhasa along the Yarlung river to Nyingchi, CNS said.
The line to Chomo would extend from the Lhasa-Shigatse line, it said.
Shigatse is the monastic seat of the Panchen Lama, Tibetan Buddhism's second most revered spiritual figure after the Dalai Lama.
The Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959 following the failure of a Tibetan uprising and established his government-in-exile in Dharamsala.
Earlier this month, China and India agreed that on July 6 frontier trade through the Natha La border pass near Chomo would resume. The pass was closed 44 years ago following a brief border war between the two nations.
Natha La, part of the famed Silk Road to South Asia, is located 4,400 metres (14,520-feet) above sea level.
CNS said plans were also underway to turn the Chomo region into a free trade area in an effort to stimulate economic activity in the Himalayan region.

hkskyline June 30th, 2006, 05:14 PM China's Tibet railway ready to go, with sealed cars and refrigerated tracks
By ALEXA OLESEN
30 June 2006
BEIJING (AP) - China unveils an engineering marvel this weekend -- a railway to Tibet that features high-tech systems to stabilize tracks over permafrost and oxygen-enriched cabins to help riders cope with high altitudes.
Yet, as with so much else in China's often harsh 56-year rule over Tibet, the 1,140-kilometer-long (710-mile-long) railway to the Tibetan capital has drawn controversy, even before the first train's departure Saturday.
Critics, including Tibetans loyal to the exiled Dalai Lama, say the US$4.2 billion (euro3.35 billion) railway is part of a campaign by Beijing to crush Tibetan culture by encouraging an influx of Han Chinese, China's majority ethnic group.
Environmentalists worry about the railway's impact on Tibet's highlands.
The train "will mean more environmental destruction for Tibet, more unemployment for Tibetans and of course our culture will be devastated," said Ngawang Woeber, a member of Gu Chu Sum, an India-based support group for former Tibetan political prisoners.
Pro-independence groups planned to wear black armbands in protest and demonstrate outside Chinese embassies Saturday, a campaign they call "Reject the Railway."
Railway official Zhu Zhensheng said the project will boost Tibet's economy and help people learn about its unique culture. Zhu said few Tibetans will work on the train at first, though "we hope to increase those opportunities."
On Friday, three foreign protesters were detained in Beijing after holding a brief demonstration at the capital's main train station.
The women from the United States, Canada and Britain unfurled a banner that read in English, "China's Tibet Railway, Designed to Destroy," before two police officers escorted them away to a police post next to the station. They were released after about three hours of questioning, one of the protesters said.
Railway Ministry officials on Thursday previewed the new rail line from the city of Golmud to Tibet's capital, Lhasa, saying it's the world's highest, taking 5,000-meter (16,500-foot) passes at 100 kph (60 mph).
The line -- sometimes called the "Sky Train" -- is a "major achievement" that will "hugely boost local development and benefit the local people," said Zhu, vice director of the Railway Ministry's Tibetan Railway Office.
When construction on the line was completed last year, Chinese President Hu Jintao called it an "unprecedented triumph."
The railway is projected to help double tourism revenues by 2010 and reduce transport costs for goods by 75 percent, the government's Xinhua News Agency said.
Chinese officials have thought for decades about building the Tibet railway. China's rail system reached Golmud in Qinghai province, nearly 3,000 kilometers (1,865 miles) from Beijing, by 1984. But railway officials said it was too difficult to extend the line to Tibet due to huge swaths of permafrost and extreme temperatures.
The plan was resurrected in 2001. Engineers determined they could build elevated bridges over the most unstable permafrost. In other places, they could sink pipes with cooling elements into the ground to stabilize track embankments, ensuring they stayed frozen.
"It's kind of like non-electric refrigeration," Zhu said.
The train cars, manufactured by Canada's Bombardier Inc., have double-pane windows with ultraviolet filters to protect passengers from the sun's glare, and carefully regulated oxygen levels in all classes.
The trip from Beijing to Lhasa will take 48 hours; officials have yet to decide if there will be daily trains.
Though the technology is new, the strategy of using trains and commerce to tamp down restive ethnic groups in China is not. Campaigns to integrate Inner Mongolia and the Muslim Xinjiang region in the far west were aided by rail links that ferried in millions of Chinese -- sometimes voluntarily, sometimes not -- to firm up Beijing's control.
Despite the rosy economic forecasts and dire predictions of Chinese control, the train is unlikely to touch off social disaster or commercial windfall, said Andrew Fischer, an economics researcher at the London School of Economics.
Fischer said that daily flights and overland links have given Chinese interested in Tibet a way to migrate for decades, that tourism is likely to stabilize at only slightly higher than the current rates, and that exploiting Tibet's natural reserves will remain prohibitively expensive.
The main reason for the project is symbolic, he said: "It's the last frontier they have been dreaming of for the last century."
For now, the Dalai Lama, in exile since 1959 but still the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, is taking a wait-and-see attitude.
"The railway line itself is not a cause of concern for the Tibetan people," said Thupten Samphel, spokesman for the Dalai Lama's government in exile. "How it will be used is the main concern."
pflo777 July 1st, 2006, 07:49 PM so from you chines guys point of view, how will the tibet region and the himalaya develop on the long run?
If they really extend the rail to india, it would mean, that the most time saving variant of sending goods from china to india and the other way would be via the tibet rail, which would bring tibet from the position at the end of the world right into the middle between two booming economies of two countries each having more than 1 billion people !!!!!
The econmic chances for lhasa would be giant ..just unbelievable...
Imagine just 10% of the container transport between india and china not going on the sea-way by ship, but over the tibet rail would bring lhasa to one of the most important freight hubs of the world?????
How do you people from china evaluate this situation?
heres a map that shows my thought:
Lhasa is situated right in the middle between booming india and the booming mega cities in chinas densest and most industrailized east coast.

Nineth was not referring you.
BTW, I couldn't answer your question either but I would like to try:
Currently the major purpose of this railroad is for the development of Tibet itself. There might be some perspect within Chinese bordering countries like Nepal, but I don't see anything approved between China and India because of this rairoad in the near future.
The terminal reaches only Lhasa. It will extend to other cities in Tibet before reaches the border. The in-state issue is more important currently IMO.
hkskyline July 3rd, 2006, 06:26 PM First Beijing-Tibet Train Reaches Lhasa After High Climb
3 July 2006
By Alexa Olesen
Of THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LHASA, China (AP)--China's first train from Beijing to Tibet made the final leg of its two-day journey on the world's highest railway, reaching Lhasa Monday after climbing to high elevations that sickened passengers and tested the specially built rail cars.
Girls, some dressed in track suits and others in traditional Tibetan robes, draped white scarves, a customary gift of greeting, on arriving passengers in the newly built Lhasa railway station.
Many passengers spent the day coping with the altitude, breathing piped-in oxygen from tubes as the train passed its highest point, the 5,072-meter (16,640-foot) Tanggula Pass. Three passengers threw up, while others had headaches - both symptoms of altitude sickness. Outside, Tibetan antelope and wild donkeys grazed beneath snow-capped mountains and deep-blue skies.
Aside from being a feat of engineering, the $4.2 billion railway is part of efforts to develop China's poor, restive west and bind it more closely to the booming east. Chinese leaders hope greater prosperity will help to still calls by Tibetans and other ethnic minorities for autonomy from the communist Beijing government.
The line has prompted protests by activists who say it will bring an influx of Chinese migrants to the isolated Himalayan region, threatening its ecology and diluting its unique Buddhist culture.
Trains completed shorter trips on the line between Lhasa and Golmud while passengers on the 16-car train from the Chinese capital were in the midst of their journey.
State media gave heavy coverage to the railway, with newspapers publishing front-page photos of passengers singing and villagers waving to the passing train. The state television midday news showed President Hu Jintao congratulating workers who built the line.
Before the last leg of the trip to Lhasa, the train stopped in Golmud early Monday to switch its standard engine for three powerful locomotives required to haul the train at high altitude.
Passengers included a 2 1/2-year-old boy, a 78-year-old man and a group of ethnic Tibetans newly graduated from the Beijing Police Academy who were headed home to work as police officers.
One Tibetan passenger asked a Western reporter what the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, thought of the train. The man, who asked not to be identified by name, said that with China's Internet monitoring, it was too dangerous for him to search news Web sites for the information himself.
The only signs of human habitation in the arid highlands south of Golmud were traditional herders tending yaks and small train stations that dot the rail line.
After the train climbed above 4,000 meters, ballpoint pens and bags of processed food burst due to the low air pressure. Laptop computers and digital music recorders failed, because moving parts in their disc drives are cushioned by tiny air bags that break at high altitude.
China's government says it is spending 1.5 billion yuan ($190 million) on environmental protection along the Golmud-Lhasa stretch of the railway.
But despite promises to minimize pollution, the sides of the line were littered with plastic bags, bottles and cardboard boxes. Large sections of the permanently frozen earth were grassless, puddled and scarred by vehicle tracks.
Damaged permafrost "becomes dark, ugly, muddy water," said Daniel Wong, an engineer based in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen who worked on the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, also laid over permafrost. "The most unfortunate thing is that such damage will spread," he said.
The railway is projected to help double tourism revenue in Tibet by 2010 and cut transport costs for goods by 75%. Until now, goods going to and from Tibet have been trucked over mountain highways that are often blocked by landslides or snow, making trade prohibitively expensive.
New York-based Students for a Free Tibet set up a Web site, rejecttherailway.com, urging the public to wear black armbands in protest of the project, which the group says "is a tool Beijing will use to overwhelm (the) Tibetan population."
"We reject the railway just as we reject China's illegitimate rule in Tibet," the site said.
Communist troops marched into Tibet in 1950, and Beijing says the region has been Chinese territory for centuries. But Tibet was effectively independent for much of that time.
The rail line is a decades-old dream for Chinese officials. But work began in earnest only in 2001, after engineers worked out how to stabilize tracks on permafrost.
The highest station is in Nagqu, a town at 4,500 meters in the plateau's rolling grasslands.

It benefits both parties thus helping Tibet become wealthier and more developed.

If you have problems with that, than you as well have problems with all the 5-stars hotels in China.

I don't.
1000USD per day is way higher than a normal Chinese working class citizen could afford, whilst a night or two in a 5-star hotel is not unthinkable.
What I am trying to say is, they are investing 200m USD to build somthing that only like 0.01% of the population could afford, and there are surely more meaningful things than this. Like, I wouldn't mind if they use the money to improve the conditions of more airports and more normal rail stations.

I do understand your objection, but it's a free economy and it's private money. they can do almost whatever they want as long as it does not harm other people. And 200 USD is a monthly income of a construction worker in Shanghai. I don't think he could afford a night in a 5-star hotel. Beside the financial question, there are many more factors that would hinder him to enter a 5-star hotel .... e.g. clothings, etiquettes, education, etc.

I understand, but I think 青藏铁路局 has also its part to play, right?:). I guess this is not private money, maybe I am wrong.
And for 5-star hotels, it is quite easy to find 5-star hotels around 100USD per night in China, which is of course expensive for a worker, but still 1 or 2 nights wouldn't look that impossible than a 1000USD per day tour. Besides, hotels are one of the essential needs (although 5-star is luxiourious), people have to have a place to sleep. Whereas tour is not essential to everyone's life.
I keep picture scenes like this train runs away from Beijing station with a lot of people staring at it, and none of them would ever get a chance to stay in one of these. It's just disturbing, not that this project can't make money.

XINING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The Qinhai-Tibet railway has carried a total of 7,241 people from Xining, capital of Qinghai province, to Lhasa, in its first two weeks of operation, a local railway official said Monday.
All trains from Xining to the capital of China's Tibet Autonomous Region had been full since July 1, said Gu Yanmei, deputy director of the Xining Railway Station.
"All services to Tibet have been operating smoothly as of July 15," she said.
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway stretches 1,956 kilometers from Xining to Lhasa. About 960 kilometers is located 4,000 meters above sea level and the highest point is 5,072 meters, at least 200 meters higher than the Peruvian railway in the Andes, the former world's highest track.
Three passenger trains travel to Tibet from Beijing, Chengdu (or Chongqing) and Xining (or Lanzhou) everyday.
Before the opening of the railway, flights from Beijing, Chengdu and several other Chinese cities carried hundreds of people to Lhasa everyday.
However, the train has proved extremely popular due to its convenience, cost and the scenery en route.

hkskyline August 1st, 2007, 02:20 PM Tourist numbers to Tibet double on new railway
BEIJING, July 31 (Reuters) - The number of tourists visiting the remote Himalayan region of Tibet in the first half nearly doubled to more than 1 million, helped by a new rail link and new airport, Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday.
They spent 990 million yuan ($130.8 million), again almost double the same period last year, the report said.
There was also a one-fifth rise in flights to Tibet, which now has three civil airports with regular services.
"The opening of the Qinghai-Tibet railway and Nyingchi airport as well as other improvements in basic infrastructure have driven the development of Tibet's tertiary sector," it said.
Most the tourists were domestic. Just 73,000 came from overseas, the report said.
Train services from Beijing to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa began last July, opening the door to a surge of Chinese and foreign tourism to the region.
Tibetan activists have warned that tourism and migration by Han Chinese could swamp Tibet's distinctive culture, with Tibetan people receiving less than their share of new jobs and income.
China, which expects the number of tourists visiting Tibet to reach 6 million in 2010, is building a fourth airport at Ngari in the west, which will be the world's highest. ($1=7.569 Yuan)

http://www.sinaimg.cn/dy/c/2007-09-18/U2397P1T1D13914345F21DT20070918075353.jpg
