They are currently doing the enabling works. Once that's done, they will start construction of the building itself.

The more I look at this rending the more I like this design. It has a more classic look and it is something different for the area. I'm also sure it will look much nicer in reality once completed.

Its almost November, has this building begun rising above ground?

UPDATE: Sorry, I didn't take any pics. Works continue but nothing appears from outside. It seems foundation works haven't completed yet.

just wondering, has construction progressed on the Grand Hyatt at all?

i was surfing the Net and i found out the place will be designed by the famous designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. this means that the hotel will have this classically contemporary feel; no doubt it'll be amazing. i'm sure it will make quite the impact on the Beirut hotel scene.

06/06/2008 Matta have just signed the contract of “Grand Hyatt Hotel - Structural Works” in Beirut Central district (BCD) . The contract is worth over $30 million.

The Scope of works encompasses all Structural and Steel Works for the construction of a 450 bay , five stars, Hotel “Grand Hyatt Beirut” that will be built on a 4805 m2 lot at the Beirut Central District (BCD) , Solidere area.

The project includes 6 basements , basement one mezzanine , 3.5 levels of podium (ground , ground floor mezzanine , 1st , technical and second floor) and 14 typical floors.

Total built area : 67230 m2.

Total Quantity of Concrete to be poured : 49000 m3

anyone knows what the orange facade is made from? stone? brick? steel? its a weird color, i cant think of what material its made of :s

^^ maybe it's just for the rendering and not real ..but there's that brick color building next to it so i think it's not that hard .. maybe paint :dunno:

it looks like Red Stucco or just normal red bricks, like houssam said it might be the same material on the building next to it

Have you seen the basement? It looks about 3 stories deep.

There is a lot more involved in constructing a building like this than you think. Also, with concrete, you have to wait for it to cure and gain sufficient strength before you can start working on the next floor. Depending on the concrete, this can take weeks.

^^ Agree , and once it reaches the 1st floor,it will rise so fast.

i m not an expert but i still think it's going slow, i v seen other very big buildings reaching 1st flour in few months.... but again im not an expert :dunno:

This hotel is not listed on the Hyatt website anymore. I wonder if it's been rebranded or put on hold?

Recent Solidere quarterlies and Matta construction are all still referring to it as "Grand Hyatt" look at the link below and notice the 2009 date..

^^That Dar al-Handasah PDF is old. It says the project supervision is from 2006 to 2009, but there is no way this project will finish this year. So clearly that PDF is outdated.

I do hope it is still a Grand Hyatt. The Hyatt future hotels page doesn't list hotels opening beyond 2010, so that might be why they took it off the page for the time being, since it probably won't be ready before 2011/2012.

I dont like it, I think Beirut deserves a 'grander' Grand Hyatt, plus the architecture is not all that at all, it kinda looks like some of the 90s glass buildings on the Dbayeh Highway.......
i know the market and location is different but u cant compare that to the Grand Hyatt , or even the older Hyatt Regency in Dubai or even Amman....

i agree, the architecture is very dull, dont know why theyre doing this, especially in downtown!

This is like the slowest project ever... its been like 2 or more years.

they had stopped everything for a while I think or at least slowed downs the work pace to the maximum until they knew what would happen in Lebanon.

Update:

31/08/2009 The Ballroom floor at the ground level of Grand Hyatt Hotel Project in BCD area - a post tension slab of 1050 m2 (39m x 27m) - is poured .
Concrete Volume poured = 250 m3. (55Mpa strength)

The structural system adopted is post tension beams + hollow core slabs th=33cm , system which was shifted from the initially designed steel structure slab. The beams with the same sections of initial designed beams (1.33m x 1.40m) , are casted and stressed.

u can clearly see 2 floors above ground now

all projects usually take alot of time to finish the underground levels, but as soon as they reach the ground level the tower sprints up in no time
so i hope the same happens here ;)

Guys, this building is now on its 2nd floor or 3rd I think! It has an excellent location--somewhere between the Intercon and Solidere.

3 floors in one month, that means it should be topped out in June!!

Finally..this was announced before Platinum and 4 seasons were even built. :) Looks really big

I hope the facade looks like the model. I am pretty sure the model was made after the renderings came out so it's possible...
