Singapore's cosmopolitan mix and multicultural heritage, from colonial entrepot to nation-state, give rise to a diversity of architectural styles, from different periods. The contrasts can be easily found all over the city.
I have taken some pics showing the various forms of contrast, feel free to add yours :)

That's quite an impressive range for a single lense. I've got 18-55 and 75-300. I'd be tempted to get the lense you've got because it seems like a great all rounder lense if it's practical to only take one.
RafflesCity January 4th, 2007, 02:03 PM ^^
Having a single lens with a wide range is the most convenient for me, for the pics that I take

Yeah right, but most "normal" people find construction sites to be an annoyance rather than a source of excitement ;-) That's why I was saying that, thinking of the simple, maybe lower-class family living next to the rising concrete monster ^ ^;
RafflesCity March 29th, 2007, 05:03 PM oh yeah...you must have seen the old pics of Singapore when the shophouses were in slum-like conditions..the contrast with the urban decay would have been so dramatic...much like what you'd see in Hong Kong etc

RafflesCity June 16th, 2007, 05:08 AM Those bumboats are a Singapore icon, their colours are even incorporated into the art works at Clarke Quay MRT station. Hope they can remain once the Barrage completes.

This pic is really good as if they're Photoshopped (cos u focus on the boat thus making the surrounding look blur) :D :okay:
Peace

Lifestyle-1881 June 16th, 2007, 07:03 PM No problem. Just wasn't sure what you mean so ask for clarification m))
Yes, i like to use the Av (Apperture) setting most of the time on my camera as to blur out the background and bring the main subject in focus.

Its actually reflected partially on those reflective tiles blocks u find along UOB near the giant bird:lol:
eyetoeye June 20th, 2007, 06:13 PM It would be great if somebody could find a beautifully restored shophouse right next to an unrestored one, and then frame the two in a very tight shot. Think that would make a very nice picture. Just offering up the idea since it's unlikely i'll be free to go photo-taking anytime soon.
Cliff June 20th, 2007, 06:21 PM ^^ I know of such a place, but I think the old shophouse has just been torn down.:(

I did a similar thing with a rotting warehouse & a restored one earlier in this thread.
There are actually quite a number of places in Singapore where you can still get a mix of newly restored and rotting shophouses. Jalan Besar is one area and there are several in Kampong Glam.
Lifestyle-1881 June 21st, 2007, 04:27 PM Taken around Boat Quay (Raffles Place) this afternoon. Great contrast of old & new buildings :)

RafflesCity June 24th, 2007, 11:38 AM Thanks raptor, glad you like the shophouse details :D
IMO, new buildings can be built anywhere, but the shophouses of Singapore will remain culturally true to Singapore and is a unique asset for the city.

@pierre, nah thats the backlane of Boat Quay, where all the pubs and cafes are. The frontage faces the river and is popular with tourists.

RafflesCity November 13th, 2008, 02:23 AM ^^
Yup the first one is along Selegie Rd while the other pic is closeby at the entrance to Mt Sophia.
The Sophia Flats is a real classic beauty, similar in style to the Capitol Building:
