180 Hidden Miles of Great Wall Found
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
20 April 2009

BEIJING -- The Great Wall of China turns out to be even greater than had been thought.

A two-year government mapping study has uncovered new sections of the wall that total about 180 miles, according to a report posted on the Web site of the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.

Using infrared range finders, GPS devices and other mapping technology, experts discovered parts of the wall that had been concealed by hills, trenches and rivers, stretching from Hu Mountain in northern Liaoning Province to Jiayu Pass in western Gansu Province, China Daily, an official newspaper, reported Monday.

The newly mapped parts of the wall were built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), to protect against invaders from the north; some were submerged over time by sandstorms in the arid region, the study said.

The discovery of the additional sections means that the Great Wall, which Chinese emperors began constructing more than 2,000 years ago to keep out Mongols and invaders, spans about 3,900 miles through the northern part of the country.

The mapping project will continue for another year, to map sections of the wall built during the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C.-206 B.C.) and the Han (206 B.C.-A.D. 9) Dynasty, the report said.

China Wall greater than previously thought

HUANGHUACHENG, China, April 22 (Reuters) - The Great Wall of China is greater than previously thought, according to a recent technologically advanced survey of the World Heritage site.

China's most thorough investigation of the wall to date has shown that in the Ming Dynasty era, it stretched 8,851.8 km (5,500 miles), further than the previous estimate of around 6,000 km (3,700 miles).

According to the joint survey by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH) and the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, the massive structure is comprised of 6,259.6 km of wall, 2,232.5 km of natural barriers such as rivers and mountains, as well as 359.7 km of trenches.

Chen Jun, president of the National Geomatics Centre who helped map the wall in three-dimensions for the survey, said the findings were important to the future of the wall, one of China's most famous symbols.

"This is significant because the Great Wall is like a name card for the Chinese people. People who have never come to China all know the Great Wall," Chen said.

"If we know how long the wall is and where it is located then we can protect it properly. So it really is very important."

Chen and other researchers spent over two years surveying the wall, using GPS positioning systems, infrared technology and other mapping techniques, to create the most comprehensive picture to date.

It shows that the easternmost point of the wall in fact lies at Hushan in Liaoning province as opposed to Shanhaiguan in coastal Tianjin. The survey was part of a 10-year project to conserve the structure launched in 2005.

The new, detailed maps should help protect sections threatened by range of factors, Chen said.

"We see that the entire length of the Ming Dynasty era Great Wall was 8,851.8 kilometres, but now perfectly restored parts only make up between 10 and 20 percent of that," Chen said.

"There are some parts where the state of preservation is worrying. Large-scale construction poses a threat, and in history erosion and war have also taken their toll."

The wall now mostly lies in short stretches, with many areas either in ruins, blown away or dissected by roads and new developments.

Around 2,000 km, almost one third, of the original wall has vanished altogether, according to the SACH.

At the Huanghuacheng section, an area popular with tourists, a dam and a public road cut through the ancient structure. Visitors climb wilder, crumbling sections that are not officially open to the public and stretches have become popular sites for summer raves.

Construction first started on the wall over 2,000 years ago, but it was only in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) that it was extended and sections were linked together into a continuous barrier against northern invaders.

The survey now plans to do more research into Qin and Han Dynasty portions of the Great Wall, and will finish in 2010, organisers said.

Well, some sections of the Great Wall were already restored prior to the 2008 Summer Olympics. Apparently, some sections of the wall are still in disrepair even after the Olympics.

hkskyline
August 31st, 2009, 06:59 AM
The wall spans thousands of miles across northern China. Not all sections are in pristine condition, as expected, and not all sections sit on habitable land / flat terrain. I don't think the Olympic Games would be able to force restoration of all parts of the wall, and we will not likely see them all restored anyway. As a comparison, the Forbidden City restoration, for the example, would span >10 years already.

The Great Wall concept was revived again during the Ming Dynasty following the Ming army's defeat by the Oirats in the Battle of Tumu in 1449. The Ming had failed to gain a clear upper-hand over the Manchurian and Mongolian tribes after successive battles, and the long-drawn conflict was taking a toll on the empire.

The function of the Great Wall is nice. Some mental people kept outside the wall,,,the Chinese sceneries are beautiful, I mean...the bowing culture must have been developed to serve the imperial China. I do not understand why the people depreciate China and worship Germany these days. Must have some problem in their eyes, or not properly educated.

Really weird statement? Worship germany?

Is there a map showing which parts of the wall are in which condition? That would be very interesting.

New deal for commercial flights over the Great Wall
09:28, July 05, 2011

Want to witness the beauty of the Great Wall but don't fancy the sharp inclines and bustling tour groups?

Sightseers can rise above the crowds and get a bird's eye view of the Badaling section by taking a spin with Capital Helicopter on a single-engine, six-seat AS350B3 Squirrel helicopter. Tours start at Badaling Airport and last about 15 minutes.

"It'd be wonderful to take pictures of the Great Wall from above," said Xi Lei, a 31-year-old Beijing photography fan, after hearing about the tour.

However, the cost could be a hurdle for many. On Nuomi.com, a group-purchase website, trips were listed at 1,500 yuan ($232) per person, a 50-percent introductory discount.

For those who can afford it, the tours promise to be five-star flights of fancy, covering the Great Wall and several other scenic spots. 17 people have so far bought tickets through the website since the service was launched last Tuesday and others have contacted the company directly.

"We're taking the opportunity as low-altitude airspace (below 1,000 meters) is gradually opened to move ahead in the private flights market," said Lou Xiaoqiao, marketing manager of the airline, which is a subsidiary of HNA Group.

As well as running aerial tours, the company's helicopters are also licensed to perform other activities, such as medical assistance, rescue operations, aerial photography and crop dusting, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).

Air traffic authorities opened part of the country's strictly controlled low-altitude airspace to private aircraft last October, with more pilot cities to be announced this year.

Li Jiaxiang, head of the CAAC, said in March that the government aims to "thoroughly" open low-altitude airspace across the country by 2015.

Despite the potential market demand created by China's growing number of millionaires, professor Li Xiaojin at the Civil Aviation University of China warned investors there are still many risks.

Most private jets, he explained, are imported with heavy tariffs, which coupled with high fuel prices make private flights an expensive business.

"The market needs to grow larger to support the high cost," he added. As of 2009, China had just 997 privately owned aircraft, compared to 200,000 in the United States.

Great Wall features parallel walls: archaeologist
Updated: 2011-09-08 15:37
Xinhua

XI'AN - Although many people believe that China's Great Wall is a single continuous structure, a Chinese archaeologist has stated that the wall actually features multiple parallel walls near several of its sections.

Surveys of several sections of the Great Wall have uncovered sections featuring two to three smaller walls built parallel to the main wall, smashing the preexisting idea that the wall was built as a single continuous extension, according to Duan Jingbo, the director of a surveying team in Northwest China's Shaanxi province.

Duan, who is also a professor at Shaanxi's Northwest University, said that a section of the wall located in Shaanxi is actually composed of two parallel walls. This type of construction allowed military leaders to garrison troops more effectively, increasing the defensive power of the wall, according to the professor.

Duan said that sections of the Great Wall located in other regions in China feature similar fortifications.

The government started surveying the Great Wall more intensively in 2006, aiming to investigate the overall condition of the wall.

The Great Wall was originally built in the Warring States Period (475 BC - 206 BC) to defend China against nomadic tribes. Sections of the wall that were destroyed during that period were rebuilt during later periods, including the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

Typical image of the Ming great wall. However only 10% of total length of the Great Wall would look like that. The rest 90% are much older and look more like this:

Or this:

Han dynasty great wall (the second longest) go furthest to the West than any wall succeeding it, this section is near Dunhuang:

Most of the Jin dynasty great wall (the longest of all) look like this:
http://scat.net.cn/kskt/chs/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/image0011-300x208.jpg

There's not only one wall, but a whole sophisticated system of walls, ditches, fortresses, garrisons, mountain forts and beacon towers, stretching towards the most unreachable terrains to incredibly isolated places. And the Great wall is not only in China. Parts of the Han great wall cuts through Mongolia and the Liao dynasty walls go as far as to Siberia.

The photos from the first post are of Juyongguan, and technically, it's not the Great wall since it's a mountain fortress and does not connect to the rest of the wall. Despite being 10 km away from the real wall and heavily reconstructed, it's being marketed as the Great wall for mass tourists. It's a bit of a trap. :)

The Great Wall is actually a series of walls that have been disconnected over the years due to wear and tear and also by construction. It's not a continuous wall along the northern border.

Please check the UNESCO World Heritage listing for more information. First of all, the Great Wall's history pre-date the Ming significantly. Second, the construction during the Ming did not unify the walls into one.

Yes I agree completely, but you misunderstood me I'm afraid. The Ming dynasty wall did not join the older sections into one, it stands by itself. In fact it's impossible and impractical to do so because the earlier walls are somewhat parallel and overlap each other. What I'm saying is the Ming wall is an unbroken stretch of wall at least from Shanhaiguan to Laoniuwan, where it meets the Huanghe. And Juyonguan isn't connected to that stretch.

"The Great Wall of China" is a very inaccurate umbrella term IMO. There are many different, unrelated walls in Chinese history built by different nations and dynasties, in different periods, different materials and locations. Your latest post "Great Wall features parallel walls" has pointed this out. The term should be changed into "Great walls of China" :)

The collective name is the "Great Wall", because conceptually it is one barrier against the northern tribes, even though in practice it consisted of multiple constructions over multiple Chinese imperial dynasties. The term and the UNESCO World Heritage Listing include all walls built by Chinese imperial dynasties, not just the Ming, but also its predecessors.

I don't think we should look at the Ming walls in isolation, since they also restored some of its predecessor walls as well.

Art is essentially an expression of human creativity and imagination. Thousands of years ago, rulers and generals of China envisioned a military defensive structure that would protect the land from northern intruders. Great Wall of China is the result of that imagination and implementation.

China kicks off 2-bln-yuan Great Wall protection project

JIAYUGUAN, Gansu, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- The municipal government of Jiayuguan in northwest China's Gansu province on Friday kicked off a repair and construction project focused on the western end of China's Great Wall.

The project will involve repair work on the sections of Great Wall in the city of Jiayuguan, including the Jiayu Pass -- the starting point of a section of the Great Wall constructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

It also includes the construction of a world cultural heritage theme park and a heritage inspection center.

The project will have a total investment of 2.03 billion yuan (317 million U.S. dollars), mostly financed by the central government.

Built in 1372, the Jiayu Pass also served as a vital passage on the ancient Silk Road. It was listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1987.

The pass underwent large-scale repairs and maintenance in 1984.

From 1986 to 1989, the Chinese government invested an accumulated 10 million yuan in repairing the pass as well as the sections of Great Wall on both sides of the pass.

The Great Wall was first built during the reign of China's first emperor Qin Shihuang (259-210 B.C.) to keep out foreign invaders.

A national survey in 2008 showed that the exact length of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty was 8,851.8 km, stretching from the Hushan section in northeast Liaoning province to the Jiayu Pass.

The Great Wall passes through 10 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in northern China, including Liaoning, Hebei, Tianjin, Beijing, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Gansu and Qinghai.

The Great Wall of China was built for military purposes and only military purposes. In the beginning the wall was made mostly from dirt and other raw materials. After some time wall made with coated by stones, bricks, and granite blocks, making a neat, sturdy long-lasting wall.
