SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Feb.17 (PNA) -- The Department of Tourism conducted a regional multi-stakeholders consultation workshop aimed at adopting salient plans, programs and strategies that could enhance and further develop the region's tourism industry.

A report from the Philippine Information Agency regional office stated that the workshop was conducted pursuant to Republic Act 9593, otherwise known as the National Tourism Act of 2009.

Evangeline Dadat, DOT information officer, said the workshop was aimed at identifying programs, strategies and doable activities that could help develop the tourism industry of the region, among others.

Victoria Corpuz, an official of the Transpo and Infra specialist from the Asia Pacific Projects, Inc., facilitated the workshop whose outputs would be used in formulating the National Tourism Development Plan (2011-2016) for the region.

Director Martin Valera of DOT Region 1 said the plan shall provide the framework to harness national and local initiatives for tourism development and promotion in consideration with global, regional and local tourism market trends and issues.

The plan also seeks to impart new approaches in developing geographic areas with potential tourism value, through consultative process at the national and local levels, thereby giving impetus for the preparation of the annual Tourism Infrastructure Program.

This will also set policies that will make tourism a catalyst and engine in protecting the environment, especially on climate change adaptation, preservation of culture and heritage, local economic development and poverty alleviation through local enterprise development.

The workshop was attended by representatives from the local government units, regional government agencies, non-government organizations and private organizations. (PNA)

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. said Wednesday fuel distribution has normalized and all retail stations are now open despite the closure of the Batangas-Manila petroleum pipeline.

Shell said in a statement the company used contingency measures to provide reliable supply of fuel despite higher cost.

“Now with our fuel distribution in full swing, we want to thank our customers for their continued support and patronage through the difficult times,” Pilipinas Shell retail general manager Bong Fadullon said.

Shell said all its retail stations in Metro Manila were now open. Shell stations experienced product run-outs since the end of October when the Makati city government ordered the shutdown of the pipeline.

Shell is the country’s second- largest oil company in the country with over 900 stations nationwide. Shell operates a refinery in Batangas province with a capacity of 110,000 barrels per day.

Shell had transported petroleum products via the pipeline from its refinery in Batangas to the Pandacan depot in Manila but the shutdown forced the company to look for an alternative delivery system.

It opted for ship-to-ship product transfers off Manila Bay, redeployment of barges and lorries and long-haul road transportation from depots in Poro, La Union and Tabangao, Batangas.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, LA UNION (17 Feb) – When adopting a child, it is best to follow the right procedures or the legal way to avoid problems in the future.

This is what the Department of Social Welfare and Development –Regional Office 1 (DSWD-RO1) Information Officer Iryn Q. De Los Reyes and Adoption Program focal person Mylene Cabanban said in an interview we had recently during the “Ammuentayo” radio program, aired over DZNL-Aksyon Radyo – La Union.

In-line with the “Adoption Consciousness Week” which was celebrated last February 5 to 11, with the theme “Bata ay wag abandonahin, legal na pagpapaampon ay gawin”, DSWD-RO1 conducted a regionwide information dissemination on the social-legal process of adoption to give guidance to childless/prospective adoptive parents on the rights and responsibilities of adopting and providing a permanent family and a home to abandoned-neglected children.

An adoption forum at the barangay level was also conducted in Mangatarem, Pangasinan and Santa, Ilocos Sur.

This forum, according to Cabanban is conducted for the prospective adoptive parents and childless couples to prepare them on the various instances and/or problems which may arise before, during, and after adoption.

According to Cabanban, there are two ways of adopting children who are legally free for adoption, Domestic – which follows the socio-legal process, and Direct Placement or pre-identified.

For Domestic, the adoptive parents shall undergo assessment by the DSWD and adoption is filed in court. Here, usually the child comes from an agency or home care center

While for the direct or pre-identified, “nasa poder na nila iyong bata, at inirehistro na nila ito sa kanilang apelyido, and sad thing is that some midwives allow such type of adoption at pinipirmahan pa nila. Ito iyong tinatawag natin na simulation of birth certificate and this is tampering of legal documents..

“Maraming ganito lalo na kung magkapatid or magkamag-anak ang biological parent and the adoptive parent, but with this type mas marami ang nagiging problema in the future”, Cabanban added.

La Union has 3 cases on this, and one good example of which is when a couple adopted a child na hindi na nila pinadaan sa korte or sa legal na paraan hanggang lumaki iyong bata at noon naman my nagsuplong na kapitbahay nila. sa Social Security System (SSS) who told that their child is not legally adopted.

This revelation made an issue at SSS and immediately their pension was put on hold until they have filed and finished the legal process of adoption.

According to De Los Reyes, there are a total of 195 active cases of children who are legally free for adoption here in the region. Pangasinan has the highest number which is 80, La Union – 48, Ilocos Sur – 31, and Ilocos Norte – 36.

“Adoption in general, may not be easy because it requires financial capability for adoptive parents and time but its worth the effort rather than having so many problems to encounter because there are sanctions for violating or not going through the proper procedure”, De Los Reyes said.

For those who are planning to adopt a child legally, they may bring the following requirements as stated by DSWD like: authenticated marriage / birth certificate, consent of children – 10 yrs. Above, medical certificate, police/NBI clearance, Income Tax Return, certificate / proof of employment, certificate of integrity coming from the barangay captain, and a family picture. LA UNION -- The Philippines’ Luke Landrigan added another feather to his cap by winning the La Union Longboard Open men’s championships -- the country’s longest-running longboard competition -- at the Monaliza Pt. in San Juan, La Union recently.

Landrigan got a set wave just minutes after the heat started and mixed it up with traditional and progressive surfing.

The Filipino champion took the lead of the first 10 minutes of the 30 -minute final.

Benito and Junior got a set wave each, linking turns, floating through sections and spending some time on the nose, but that was not enough to take the lead of Landrigan , who proved untouchable in the final.

The three-day competition attracted more than 130 surfer-participants from all over the country, including the Japanese duo of Shinjo Yuzuru and Tsuyoshi Takahashi.

The event was held on a 1-2 feet waves with light winds and crisp conditions.

The famous longboard point delivered long right hander’s which gave the competitors a chance to display traditional and progressive surfing.

Benito Nerida, the youngest finalist, spent lots of time on the nose while Tsuiyoshi linked re-entries with some nice nose rides.

Junior Ventura replied with stylish hang ten’s linking maneuvers after the other.

MANILA (3rd UPDATE) - A magnitude 5 earthquake hit parts of northern Luzon on Friday morning.

The earthquake struck at 6:20 a.m. at around 10 kilometers northwest of La Trinidad, Benguet, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The moderately strong earthquake was felt at Intensity 4 in Baguio City, Intensity 3 in San Fernando, La Union, and Intensity 2 in Burgos, Ilocos Sur.

PHIVOLCS said the shallow earthquake was tectonic in origin and that it expects aftershocks.

However, PHIVOLCS said it does not expect any damage from the earthquake.

Based on PHIVOLCS' Earthquake Intensity Scale, an Intensity 4 earthquake has this general impact:

IV Moderately Strong - Felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened. Vibration is felt like a passing of heavy truck. Hanging objects swing considerably. Dinner, plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle. Floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Liquids in containers are slightly disturbed. Water in containers oscillate strongly. Rumbling sound may sometimes be heard.

On July 16, 1990, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake devastated parts of Baguio City and northern and central Luzon.

Over 1,200 people died and nearly 2,700 injured in the "killer earthquake." It caused P10 billion in damage to properties.

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/regions/02/17/11/magnitude-5-earthquake-hits-baguio-city

This is so scary. The faults are ripe again for movement. Let's pray that earthquakes would not have great damages as what had happened 21 years ago

“You should follow the wind of life," says Lolita Valderrama Savage, describing one of her top three favorite paintings, “Call of the Wind" (a gently windswept European landscape) and her life philosophy.

After finishing her Fine Arts degree from the University of Santo Tomas in the ‘70s, the wind whisked Lolita to Florence where she studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti as an Italian government scholar, cutting short a budding teaching career at U.S.T.

Today, her paintings grace the collections of film director Spike Lee, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab, Nobel Prize winner Manfred Eigen, Connecticut Governor Dannell Malloy, a UK Member of Parliament, the Indian industrialist Hinduja family, a few fortunate Filipino collectors and the list goes on.

At three-and-a-half years old, Lolita attached herself to drawing, recalling that “my mother would pacify me with a pencil and paper and I’d be at peace for the next ten hours." In her high school yearbook, she officially pronounced that she’d be a painter.

Nature would eventually become her favorite subject. Growing up in Manila, she often stared at the sky, pondering heaven. When visiting Bulacan, she always played in mango orchards and picked fruit straight off the trees. She looked forward to trips to La Union where she could be close to the beach and she relished the adventure of finding giant snakes in Ilocos Norte while wandering the farmlands.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union -- Police and drug agency officials led Friday the ceremonial burning of marijuana plants and brick dried marijuana at the police regional headquarters parade ground.

Philippine Natural Police (PNP) Chief Raul Bacalzo and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Jose Gutierrez Jr. gave recognition to Santol (La Union) Mayor Daisy Olivar, PDEA-Ilocos Director Roberto Opena and other recipients for their active participation in the discovery of the marijuana plantation at the mountainous area of said town.

The two officers congratulated all those involved in the operation for their relentless effort to neutralize and eradicate marijuana plantations within Ilocos.

Starting dawn of January 19, joint law enforcement operatives launched a six-day anti-illegal drugs operation dubbed as Oplan Farmville at the tri-boundaries of Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, and Benguet. The operation netted P1.3 million worth of marijuana.

The operating group were composed of elements from the PDEA regional office Task Force Alpha, the 503rd Brigade Philippine Army, TOG-1 Philippine Air Force Nolcom, Regional Mobile Group 1, Provincial Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operating Team-Ilocos Sur (Paidsot-IS), Regional Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operating Team (Raidsot), Military Intelligence-1-ISAFP, 302nd Air Intelligence Task Group-PAF, Naval Intelligence Security Group Northern Luzon and NBI.

As gathered from PDEA-Ilocos, about 6,963,964 fully grown marijuana plants and 41,935 marijuana seedlings were uprooted and burned, including 370 grams of marijuana seeds. The estimated cost of these given by the Dangerous Drugs Board is P1,394,479,450.

Meanwhile, a certain Juliano Tapaya of Barangay Badeo, Kibungan, Benguet, a suspected marijuana plantation cultivator, was arrested.

He was charged for violation of Section II of Article 16 (Cultivation or Culture of Plants Classified as Dangerous Drugs) of Republic Act 9165 (Dangerous Act of 2002). Penalty of which is life imprisonment to death and a fine ranging P500,0000 to P10 million upon conviction.

Accordingly, several raiding teams trekking the weaving trails uphill encountered during the operation fleeing suspected cultivators that threw taunts, boulders and rocks to them. This led to a hot pursuit, but the jungle wise suspects eventually eluded arrest. A firefight also ensued between the government troops and unconfirmed insurgents.

"This confirms reports that communist terrorists of leftists are providing protection to both the cultivator & their marijuana plantations," Opena said.

The various operating teams were airlifted to the 84 targeted marijuana plantations, leading to the discovery of hectares of carefully cultivated marijuana, he added. (Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre/Sunnex)

Resisting dirt cheap material and labor from abroad, Mojo slippers walk the talk
By Cecile J. Baltasar
February 20, 2011, 1:31pm

MANILA, Philippines - Three decades ago, before the globalization boom, being an all-Filipino entrepreneur was the only choice there was. You got your materials from the provinces, did labor in factories scattered all over Metro Manila, and assembled packaging at the main and, often, only office. Outsourcing materials or labor abroad was too expensive and not the rule of thumb back then. Now that the world has shrunk to the click of a mouse, however, keeping a business Filipino-produced through and through has become a challenge.

It is one that 40-year-old Joey Cuerdo, owner of Mojo slippers and sandals, proudly meets every day. Not a single sliver of material in a pair of Mojo slippers is sourced or put together abroad. The rubber is grown by farmers in Bukidnon, the slippers assembled and packaged in Antipolo and Marikina. “Mojo’s advocacy is its belief in its products,” says Joey. “We proudly contribute to the [Philippine] economy.”

Rising from Scratch

Mojo’s—and Cuerdo’s—other advocacy is being outdoors, which is the reason for Mojo’s birth in the first place. As an avid U.P. Mountaineer in U.P. Los Baños in 1991, Cuerdo was frustrated with the lack of efficient but affordable footwear for outdoor use. What was available in the market were imported sandals and slippers, such as Teva and The Northface. These were too expensive for college students like Cuerdo, who had to subsist on a tight budget. So with P350 from his allowance, Cuerdo bought shoemaking tools and materials, and made his first pair of outdoor sandals.

Six months later, he was mass producing (with the help of a small shoemaking shop in Marikina) and selling each pair for P250; his mountaineer friends—who were essentially Mojo’s first sales representatives—got their pairs for use and more to sell at a discount.

For a decade, Cuerdo was at the helm of Mojo as its sole proprietor. Eventually, though, feeling the pressure from competition (Sandugo, Tribu, Reva, Banana Peel), Cuerdo opened house and shopped around for the right partners and investors. In 2006, Mojo was reborn through the corporation Outward-Bound Gear. Since then, Mojo’s monthly production output has been 10,000 pairs of flip-flops (it’s now a slipper market, not a sandal market).

Producing such a huge number is making China’s and Korea’s cheap labor rates more and more tempting. “The pressure to [outsource] labor is big, especially because [the rates are] dirt cheap,” says Cuerdo. “[If we go there], we can also do a price war with our competitors. But we will keep production here [in the Philippines].

BlackWe owe it to our workers.” Because of low labor rates abroad, many shoemaking shops and factories in Marikina have been forced to close down. Mojo provides employment to workers in one of the few shops that are still in operation.

Ironically, what challenges Mojo’s daily production is also the one that works for it: all its other competitors have gone abroad for cheap labor or materials. Mojo is the only one that can correctly boast it is 100 percent Pinoy-made, materials and production.

Mojo on the Road

From word-of-mouth marketing, Mojo has begun relying on actual Boomsales staff to tell the public about its advocacy. Promodizers are on-hand at Mojo’s over-50 concessionnaire stores in Luzon, including Toby’s, Planet Sports and Olympic Village, where Mojo is sold under Outward-Bound Gear or OBG. Specific sales agents handle the 20 or so stores in the Visayas-Mindanao area.

Mojo’s biggest marketing tool, however, is proving to be its sister company, Power Play Events Management. In 2007, Cuerdo put up Power Play to help him organize a weekend surfing event in Bagasbas beach, in the town of Daet, Camarines Sur. With input from the Department of Tourism (DOT), the LGU, and the local surfers’ organization, Cuerdo, through Power Play, sent e-mailed invitations and a detailed itinerary to employees in Manila. He wanted them to go out of town, to Bagasbas specifically, and learn how to surf. In the invite, he included bus trip schedules, resort bookings, activities. And if the participants came to the beach and registered wearing Mojo slippers, they’d get a discount and a Mojo freebie.

“These events are big, and we organize it all for our participants,” says Cuerdo. “We set up the beach, get surf instructors, coordinate with the coast guard, call on the PNP for security, book the participants’ accommodations, even send them directions by bus and by private vehicle.”

The first time Cuerdo pulled this off was three years prior, when he, with DOT’s help, put up the La Union Surf Break. That weekend event put La Union’s beaches on the map as not just an international surfer’s destination but as a tourist destination for people who want to learn how to surf. Since then, the La Union Surf Break has become an annual thing—as the one in Bagasbas has turned out, as well—and has taken off on its own. It’s gotten its own sponsors; however, Mojo has the distinction of being the Surf Break’s first partner sponsor.

These days, Cuerdo is busy installing ziplines and hanging bridges under Power Play, which, incidentally, also runs the wall-climbing gym, Power Up. For his installation work, Cuerdo has found himself in such places as Laoag, La Union, Bulacan, Palawan and Corregidor, for resorts and tourist spots wanting to be more productive. Of course, Mojo is never two steps away from anything Cuerdo does. And many, many Filipinos are grateful for that.

Sunday, February 20, 2011

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union -- A top police official on Sunday reminded members of the Police Regional Office (PRO) in Ilocos of their duties to keep the streets safe for the public.

"I do not expect the police station to be going after big time criminal syndicates. First and foremost is for them to keep the streets safe," said Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Raul Bacalzo.

He said going back to the basics of policing would help, citing the simple skill in using a handcuff, responding to an incident, and conducting investigation.

"To ordinary people, the meaning of peace and order is very simple -- kapag sila ay nakakapaglakad sa kalye na hindi siya natatatakot na ma-hold up, hindi natatakot maagawan ng cellphone, hindi natatakot magulpi sa kalye kahit dis-oras ng gabi. Kaya gawin nating tahimik ang ating mga kalye. That is basically the peace and security that the Filipino wants. So let the police stations concentrate on this," he said.

In implementing the integrated patrol system, Bacalzo said he has ordered the deployment, especially at streets of Metro Manila and in other urbanized areas, of members of the Regional Mobile Group, the Special Action Force (SAF) and the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) teams.

He also ordered the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group not to mind estafa and others, but concentrate on syndicated crime groups and high profile cases.

For the Highway Patrol group, he said its member should concentrate on carjacking and highway robberies, while members of SAF should concentrate on terrorists.

The Intelligence Group, meanwhile, should concentrate on insurgency, while the maritime should focus on illegal fishing and others, he added.

"When I assume as [PNP chief], I set the foundation initiative because I believe that you can only lay down that foundation for the others to follow. A very strong foundation for which other members of the PNP can stand on is the strong community-police partnership," he said.

Bacalzo also urged the officers and men of the PRO to maintain its good relationship to the community, as they are the PNP's number one support system.

He, meanwhile, said that around 7,000 men and women will be recruited this year as new members of the PNP.

The recruitment process will be through the regular recruitment system, or attrition recruitment (replacement of those who will retire from the police service this year). (Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre/Sunnex)

HOW TO GET TO LA UNION?
The air conditioned bus firms (Dominion Bus Lines, Philippine Rabbit, Partas, Fariñas, Maria de Leon, and Viron) depart from terminals in Manila every hour. Destinations can either be La Union, Narvacan, Vigan, Laoag or Abra. The City of San Fernando lies 273 km. from Manila, which is about 5 hours by land or 30 minutes by air, and is about an hour’s drive from Baguio City.

Getting Around La Union
To get around La Union, one can take Jeepneys and mini-buses with fixed routes at a minimal fare. Tricycles (motorcycles with sidecars) are commonly used in reaching remote areas and suburbs.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Feb. 21 (PIA) --- To address the perennial issue of labor mismatch, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in the region recently introduced the National Skills Registry System (NSRS), one of the labor reforms being pushed by President Benigno Aquino III to ultimately facilitate employment.

According to Director Henry John Jalbuena of DOLE Region 1, “the NSRS will serve as a live register of skills and businesses available in a particular area, where jobseekers and prospective employers can mutually 'advertise' their qualifications and manpower requirements.”

The NSRS,now piloted in the City of San Fernando, jobseekers may register for the NSRS in their respective barangays starting March 1 through the punong barangays and focal persons of the 43 barangays who attended the consultation-briefing on NSRS recently at the ABC Hall, this city.

The 43 barangays pledged their commitment to begin with the NSRS after equipping themselves of the vital knowledge and materials to implement the project, while the remaining 16 barangays of the city to complete the 59 barangays was scheduled in the next round of consultation-briefing.

These16 barangays include Apaleng, Bangkusay, Barangay IV, Biday, Camansi, Canaoay, Carlatan, Catbangen, Dalumpinas Este, Ilocanos Norte, Pagdalagan, Pagdaraoan, Pagudpud, Poro, Puspus, and Tanqui.

According to Arly Valdez, Information Officer of DOLE-1, the Municipality of Rosales signified their intention with DOLE, thru their Public Employment Services Office to avail and implement the NSRS.

Valdez further said that DOLE is targeting the City of Dagupan in Pangasinan and the municipality of San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte as the next prospect for the second wave of localizing the NSRS. (PIA1/La Union with reports from DOLE)

THE micro, small and medium enterprises, which make up 99.6 percent of businesses operating in the Philippines, show huge potential in terms of employment and support to the economy.

Globe, through its Globe Business unit, has set its sights on the small and medium enterprises (SME) because of the importance of this sector in the business landscape, the company said in a press statement.

In February 2010, Globe introduced its SME initiative called Globe Negostar, which received positive feedback in the market. Following the success of this model, Globe Business launched a more aggressive Globe Negostar for 2011.

Globe Negostar is focused on advancing the growth of SMEs using business innovations that address their specific needs. As a caravan that brought together SMEs in key cities nationwide, Globe Negostar showcased affordable, easy-to-use and relevant ICT solutions that enable them to achieve cost efficiency and increase productivity.

Needs

“As we continue to bring Globe Negostar to entrepreneurs this year and strengthen our SME advocacy, our focus remains on helping their businesses flourish and expand using the right business innovations and communication technology for their needs,” said Manny Aligada, head of corporate and SME segments at Globe Business.

“Last year, we held several Globe Negostar fairs across the country and this year we will do even more by holding these forums simultaneously in several key areas and further growing our SME customer base nationwide,” he said.

Globe Business offers various solutions and tools, especially for SMEs, through its account managers and the Globe stores. Through the Globe Negostar forums, it brings and demonstrates these business innovations to entrepreneurs from all over the country.

Globe Negostar will kick off in seven cities today as the company marks the beginning of its aggressive rollout in the SME market this year to maintain its foothold. The Globe Negostar venues are Oasis Country Resort in San Fernando City, La Union, Fortune Hongkong Seafood Restaurant in San Fernando City, Pampanga, Edsa Shangri-La Manila, Makati Shangri-La Manila, The Lake Hotel in Tagaytay City, Cavite, City Sports Club Cebu in Cebu City and Apo View Hotel in Davao City.

Globe Negostar will have special offers and incentives for SMEs attending the forums.

SMEs can get the latest Apple devices and the newest mobile phones at the forums.

The program also offers deals such as Globe Broadband and laptop bundles as well as the unlimited Business Plus combos, Biz Talk packages, and Biz Landline tack-ons. (PR)

The government is having the best of both worlds as far as the tobacco industry is concerned. It seems to be succeeding in slowing down cigarette consumption but at the same time the taxes it collects from the industry is getting bigger every year.

This is the gist of a statement given to Malaya Business Insight by Chris Nelson, president of the PMFTC.

He said that based on figures obtained from the Bureau of Internal Revenue, excise tax paid by the industry last year soared to P31.7 billion from more than P27 billion in 2009.

On the other hand, the government seems to be succeeding in its campaign against cigarette smoking.

According to Nelson, the volume of cigarettes withdrawn from the factories (removals) grew at a compound annual rate of 5.4 per cent from 1997 to 2004.

The rise in collection is basically a result of increases in excise tax imposed every two years from 1997 to the current year.

In a way, the reduction in consumption may not be a result of a campaign against cigarette smoking. The decline is basically a result of market resistance against rising prices, which in turn is caused by periodic and increasing excise tax imposed every two years.

Nelson disputed the belief of many that tobacco is a dying industry. He was suggesting that if it dies, not because of a successful campaign against smoking but because of market resistance against rising prices, the government would lose excise tax in the tens of billions of pesos every year.

He said PMFTC, the offshoot of the merger of Philip Morris and Fortune Tobacco, is planning to expand in Mindoro and other areas where land is suited to tobacco.

Nelson said the company plans to expand its operations by about 50 percent by planting and cultivating more leaf in Occidental and Oriental Mindoro.

He said in the two Mindoros alone, the company has 450 hectares of tobacco farm, while in Isabela, it has 3,500 hectares.

Other areas found by the company as suited for tobacco are La Union, Samar, Ilocos Sur and Leyte provinces as well as Mindanao island.

"We are prepared to pour substantial resources to strengthen the tobacco-growing communities," he said.

The resources, he said, include training, education and community development.

Before Philip Morris set up a $300 million plant in Tanauan City in Batangas, it had a local licensee – La Suerte Cigar and Cigarette Company – largely controlled by the Telengton brothers.

Philip Morris headquarters refused to renew the licensing agreement with La Suerte and decided to have its wholly owned operation in the Philippines and invested $300 million.

Before Fortune was merged with Philip Morris, its majority owner, local taipan Lucio Tan, spent an estimated $50 million rehabilitating old dams in the tobacco provinces in the North.

Being a chemical engineer, Tan and his executives have long discovered that tobacco cannot be irrigated with seawater. In fact, he said, the water table in some provinces in the North is so shallow at about 10 feet.

If the leaf survives on saltwater, it ceases to be good for making cigarettes. Tan’s foundation that rebuilt the old dams is also helping irrigate rice fields, particularly in some Ilocos Norte towns.

He hopes that irrigating the rice fields will augment farmers’ incomes from tobacco by giving them opportunities to grow enough rice for their families’ needs, if not actually to make a little more money.

There are close to 100,000 people or farmers and their families nearly completely dependent on the tobacco industry.

This number does not include workers in the cigarette industry estimated at nearly 10,000 in the merged companies.

AGOO: Rice-based products

http://www.launion.gov.ph/e107_files/images/business/otopagoo.jpg

A by-product of rice commonly called as “kankanen” in Iloko, “kakanin” in Tagalog or native cake is often used as merienda by Filipinos. It can be bought in the market or even from roaming vendors in the community. Balikbayans also love to bring these native cakes to their destined countries as pasalubong. Among these are bibingka, sumna, patupat, tinudok, butsi, binobodan, bilo-bilo, palitaw, buyos and the like.

ARINGAY: Milkfish (bangus)

http://www.launion.gov.ph/e107_files/images/business/otoparingay.jpg

Milkfish or bangus is cultured in pen areas with over 400 fish pen operators engaged in the bangus industry. It is comparable to the Dagupan or Bonuan bangus as to its quality and palatability. Its abundance has helped locals to involve themselves to livelihood through bangus deboning and smoking.

BACNOTAN: Honeybee

BAGULIN: Soft Broom

http://www.launion.gov.ph/e107_files/images/business/otopbagulin.jpg

The broom making industry is the alternative source of livelihood next to farming in this upland municipality, Tiger grass, the main raw material for brooms, grows abundantly in this town. For years, soft broom, produced from this upland municipality, is sold popularly in the City of Pines as a Baguio product. It can be that the kind of soil and just the right climate makes tiger grass adopt well only in the area.

Catch the breeze and ride some waves at the 6th Manila Surfers Cup, which will be hosted on the sunny shores of Urbiztondo Beach in San Juan, La Union, this March 5 to 6, 2011, with a kick-off party happening on Wednesday, March 23. Put together by the Manila Surfers Association (MSA) with the help of their long-time friends in surf, surf retailer Stoked Inc., FIC, and the La Union Surf Club (LUSC), it promises to be a weekend of sun, sea, and good vibes. Indulge in some refreshing ice cream from the Fruits in Ice Cream truck, as Manila surfers dance on the curling waves, battling it out in the surf competition’s men’s and women’s longboard and shortboard divisions. And not just experienced surfers will get the chance to win the Cup, along with the awesome prizes from elite surf and sports brands like Stoked Inc., Rudy Project, and FOX—even surf newbies can compete in their own division too!

http://gallery.clickthecity.com/albums/userpics/10013/normal_RudyNox0232.jpg

But even more than the irresistible beats of the promised tribal beach party, complete with a percussion band, tiki torches, and fire poi, what looks to be the highlight of the Cup is the much-anticipated, ever-entertaining, and occasionally scandalous FIC Forever Young Costume Surf Competition, now a shameless tradition of the MSA. With unforgettable memories of a fearsome Nacho Libre, the reunited Jem & the Holograms, and the UP Oblation Statue come to life (and wearing a leaf, thank goodness for that), one can’t but wonder (and imagine, unfortunately) what crazy costumes the equally unhinged surfers will whip up next. And, if you’re not tempted to put together an outfit of your own and join these surfers in the water, we can definitely guarantee that you’ll have as much fun watching from the sandy shores. Who knows, maybe you’ll catch a wave of your own before the sun sets on Sunday.

Surrounding lots until the lot adjacent to the diversion road have also been sold to Robinsons. Have you also asked about this to the city? whew let's keep our fingers crossed
hugo, according to a reliable source, it is confirmed Robinson's has purchased and now owned the said lot but no specific plans for the future use of the property at this time. Let's wait for their further announcement.

John Estrada married Priscilla Meirelles in a beach wedding held just
this afternoon, February 26, 2011, at the Thunderbird Resort in Poro
Point, La Union. John Estrada and Priscilla Meirelles were visibly in
their happiest moment as they tied the knot in a sunset wedding in
front of their family and friends, some of their are Priscila's family
and close friends who flew all the way from Brazil.

Susan Barlin’s story is the stuff tele-novels are made of. The kind that leaves you all choked up as you reach for a box of Kleenex to wipe away a tear or two. But as people love happy endings, Susan does not disappoint. In the US, Susan Barlin is known as one of the most successful Filipino-Americans. She is CEO of Barlin & Associates Realty, a firm selling US properties. Often referred to as a “real estate guru-in-training,” Susan now owns and operates 10 companies out of Los Angeles, California, which includes the Barlin International Group, the fastest growing international real estate group in Southern California. But for Susan, it was a long, arduous climb to the top.

“My life has always been full of contradictions,” she says with a long sigh. “I was raised in a very big family - it’s mine, yours, and ours. My mother had two kids from a previous relationship. I never met my real father, Dr. James Larkin, who was an American doctor and philanthropist; I was two years old when my parents separated. My mother married a man who had 11 kids from a previous wife who had just died. Together, they had nine children; so we were 22 and that put me in the middle. We were not poor, but the pie was thinly divided among 22 children. We lived in a four-bedroom house in San Fernando, La Union. We had no beds, we slept on the floor....READ MORE (http://www.sareaa.com/susan.html)

Salamat! Marami pa akong ipopost dito na ibang La Union products from other sources.

Ang kahihinatnan sana ng agri-tourism expo na ito ay ang pagiging self-sufficient ng La Union sa food supply at ang mas malakas na turismo:banana::banana::banana::banana:

LA UNION cyclist Joel Acosta took Baguio and Benguet bikers to school as runner Hernane Sore remained the king of the hill at the close of the 1st Radar Run.

Acosta timed 55.27 minutes to rule the first of its kind uphill 15-kilometer bike race sponsored by Front Runner magazine with Doni Gonatice of Baguio City timing in 55.36 to claim the second spot. Arnold Ordonio came in at third with 58.14 seconds.

Analiza Maranan of the BGH Cool City, meanwhile, topped the ladies division with a time of one hour and 41.02 seconds while Ruth Valbuena and Carrie De Gracia finished second and third in the event joined by 100 bikers from Baguio, Benguet, and other parts of Northern Luzon.

In the eight kilometer radar run, University of Baguio's Sore made his opponents eat dust as he timed 35.31 seconds to top the running event which attracted 400 runners from all over.

Cesar Castaneto, on the other hand, finished second with a time of 36.09 seconds while Marson Tarcelo of the Cordillera Career Development College finished third with a time of 36.34 seconds.

In the distaff side, Jessa Mangsat, of the famed UB Athletics squad, took 46.07 minutes to finish the race in first place while Librada Tamson took her time with 49.15 seconds to finish second as Geraldine Sealza finished third with a time of 50.36 minutes.

The bike and foot race, according to Che Alberto of Cool City Running, earlier said the race is a tough challenge in enduring and finishing the race which will cover an intertwine of asphalt, cement gravel and sand.

"But an added come-on is the chance to view the city from the Radar Station," added Alberto.

The bike race started at the Petron station along Marcos highway and finished at the radar station in Tuba, Benguet. (Roderick Osis)

Thanks po Henz! Yeah, it would be a pleasure to meet you in person. Just call me when you're at San Fernando, La Union soon.

That's nice to know that the each store will be a single building! I'm excited for these! That would bring the number of McDo La Union branches from 2 to 4.:cheers:

I also wonder where will the next Mcdo store in San Fernando will be located. Prospect locations are:

1. At The cainderia (lot for sale) beside the shell station and Goodyear just meters from Jollibee 24/7

2. Beside Drema Tower

3. Beside Producer's bank

But when space governs, the best area to locate Mcdo among the 3 is Prospect number 2. Let's wait for Henz' reply. Whew!

I hope after McDo, mall na!

May mall na actually sa Agoo, ipinatayo noong 2008 ang Magic mall owned by the Lims of Dagupan.

Agoo via Marcos Highway, Bauang via Nagulian Road, Rosario via Kennon road. Safest is Marcos Highway.

Agree.

Agoo has many banks, has Jollibee, mall, Skycable, etc.

MANILA, Philippines – John Estrada and Priscilla Meirelles got married on Saturday in La Union in a private ceremony, “The Buzz” reported Sunday.

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sites/default/files/a_images/people/celebrity/john_priscilla.jpg

The 2 celebrities exchanged “I do’s” before more than 200 guests.

Celebrities including Richard Gomez (best man), Lucy Torres-Gomez (matron of honor), broadcaster Ginger Conejero, Anjo Yllana, Randy Santiago, Ai-Ai delas Alas, Ogie Alcasid, Gabby Concepcion, and Kris Aquino (bible reader) were part of their entourage.

Estrada’s children from his first marriage to actress Janice de Belen were also in attendance.

In a taped interview with “The Buzz” host Boy Abunda, Meirelles said her favorite part of the wedding was when she was walking down the aisle while her favorite song was being played in the background.

“I realized that I was getting really married. I would be somebody else’s Mrs. I’m going to be with my own family,” she said.

“I believe in destiny. I really believe there is a reason why I came from so far to end up as Mrs. Estrada. I don’t believe that anything is by chance in life. I really think that there is a plan for everything and there’s a reason why everything happens,” the Brazilian beauty added.

As for Estrada's favorite, he said: “The kiss was nice. ‘Yong paglakad niya papunta sa akin. In-enjoy ko ‘yong reception talaga. Masaya lahat.”

Meirelles and Estrada said they are temporarily postponing their honeymoon due to work commitments.

As for having babies, Meirelles said that can wait. She said she wants to enjoy their time as husband and wife first before having children.

By Eric Brown, Sustainable Cities Youth-Led Development Officer

On February 8th 2011 Sustainable Cities International, The City of San Fernando and the Junior Chambers International co-hosted the Youth Environment Forum that brought together young leaders from across the city. Following a presentation on Youth Leadership by City Environment and Natural Resource Office Technical Staff, Celso Jucutan, each youth organization present had the chance to talk about the work they are doing as young leaders to protect and enhance the environment. These articulate and ambitious young people are engaged in Tree Parenting (not just planting!), turtle conservation, and organic farming – to name a few.

http://plusnetwork.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/p1010775.jpg?w=503&h=364

Following this, Kate Letizia and Meghan Larson (current CIDA funded SCI interns) facilitated an interactive asset mapping workshop to draw out the strengths of these organizations. There was a lot of talent and force in the room. The challenge before them now, as I see it, is to find ways to partner and build on each other’s activities. The City of San Fernando can play a lead role in this coordination! They already have the structure in place in the form of the City Local Youth Development Council. SCI is proud to support the work of San Fernando to meaningfully engage its young citizens.

Whew!
If the new McDo in SFC area will be stand-alone outlet, meaning complete with drive thru and parking area then a bigger lot area is required. I guess No.1 or any other area near where the Robinson's lot is located, is the best option.

Filipino doctors and specialists are supporting a bill seeking to establish a stem cell research center to help Filipino cancer patients in the country.

Rep. Joseph Emilio Abaya, Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology said the establishment of a stem cell research and storage center will be a great help in promoting stem cell treatment in the country.

http://www.congress.gov.ph/download/press_photos/15Abaya_Joseph.jpg

Appearing before the recent hearing of the House body, Dr. Samuel Bernal, a leading figure in stem cell and a cancer survivor himself, said the establishment of a stem cell research center is a first step in helping those in dire need especially those who cannot afford an expensive treatment.

National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) Deputy Executive Director Dr. Dante Dator told the lawmakers that all human beings come from stem cell and with its capability to transform itself has the potential benefits of providing cures for illnesses.

Dr. Marita Reyes, Vice Chairman of the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board and former faculty of the University of the Philippines Biochemistry Department, said current applications for stem cell products in the United States include replacement for bone harvesting in spine fusion surgery, bone growth and void fill in fresh fractures and bone growth and void fill in non-union fractures.

Reyes said the Makati Medical Center; St. Luke's Medical Center, Kidney Center, and Medical City are also involved in the stem cell therapy and research.

"Stem cell treatments should undergo clinical trials and proven to be safe and effective prior to release in the market after noting that stem cell therapy is offered as part of dermatological services in some malls," said Dr. Mark Pierre Dimamay of St. Luke’s Center for Stem Cell Research and Biotechnology Division.
http://www.congress.gov.ph/download/press_photos/15Eriguel_Eufranio.jpg

Rep. Eufranio Eriguel (2nd district, La Union), a physician and principal author of House Bill 1977, said the bill will promote research and human clinical trials using stem cells that are ethically obtained and show evidence of benefits for human patients.

"It will make the country a place for open scientific inquiry and technological innovation, and even promote investment and generate jobs," Eriguel said.

Eriguel said stem cell therapy is very expensive and only a few physicians are licensed to do the procedure in the Philippines.

Studies show that stem cells can be used in bone marrow transplantation and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. Both of these procedures are used to restore stem cells that have been destroyed by high dose chemotherapy. These treatments using stem cells may also be used for patients who have had radiation treatment for their cancer.

MANILA, Philippines — Lawmakers join Filipino doctors and specialists in pushing for the establishment of a stem cell research center in the country and help ease plight of cancer patients in the country.

Cavite Rep. Joseph Emilio Abaya, vice chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology, rallied behind the proposed creation of a stem cell research and storage center, which according to him would promote stem cell treatment in the country in a move to assist those cancer patients who cannot afford an expensive treatment.

La Union Rep. Eufranio Eriguel filed House Bill 1977 which seeks to promote research and human clinical trials using stem cells and to “make the country a place for open scientific inquiry and technological innovation, and even promote investment and generate jobs.”

He said only a few physicians are licensed to do the procedure in the Philippines, citing that stem cell therapy is very expensive.

In a recent Congress hearing, Dr. Samuel Bernal, a leading figure in stem cell research and a cancer survivor himself, supported the passage of Eriguel’s bill.

If the site development plan and location from the link above is the same as that on the sketches in your photo, then further comments from the link above would prove that the proposed SM at Biday WAS true

Some comments about the lots for sale near the proposed SM that I copied from the link above:

the lot seller/real estate broker is using "SM" bait to lure speculators, land bankers and businessmen to purchase his lots. he should have verified his facts first before using "SM" as his selling point. The title itself is very deceiving...:ohno:

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, March 1 (PIA) – A whole day diocesan event entitled “Sons and Daughters of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) or (SDO) and Family Solidarity Day” was conducted today at the Christ the King College, High School Campus, this city.

This activity, which carries the theme “Sama-sama sa Iisang Mithiin Tungo sa Matatag na Pamilyang OFW”, highlights an Inter-School Interpretative Dance Competition and On-the-Spot Financial Literacy Quiz Contest that enjoins high school students from different schools in the province whose parent/s are working abroad.

The contest aims to establish a strong support and solidarity among the OFW sector and their families through cultural appreciation.

Participants in the competition interpreted the life and story of their loved ones abroad. This is also a way of making these children feel and internalize the sacrifices, loneliness and pain that their parents are experiencing away from home to seek for greener pastures to help alleviate the economic condition of their families.

The event was organized by the Diocesan Desk for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People as part of the celebration of the 25th National Migrants Sunday on March 13, 2011, which is dedicated to the heroism and sacrifices of the OFWs and their families – our “Bagong Bayani” who have contributed a huge part in uplifting the Philippine economy. MANILA, Mar 1 (PNA) – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) have joined hands in providing water and sanitation (WatSan) facilities in many villages throughout the country as part of the government’s community outreach program.

DAR and AFP officials said hundreds of farming households in several villages in Eastern Samar, La Union and Davao will now be safe from water-borne diseases after DAR launched the Community-Managed Potable Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (CPWASH) project in those areas.

DAR, in partnership with the Philippine Center for Water and Sanitation (PCWS) and AFP Civil Relations Service (CRS), will train members of farmers’ organizations and residents of agrarian reform communities (ARCs) on how to construct, operate, manage and maintain low-cost potable water and sanitation system.

AFP-CRS said the project is part of its Bayanihan intiative called Internal Peace and Security Plan (IPSP) aimed to win the peace in the countryside.

“We [at DAR] are pushing this project in response to the water-borne diseases that threaten ARCs, especially those in remote areas where people lack potable drinking water,” said Susana Leones, director of the Bureau of Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Development (BARBD).

The CPWASH consists of biogas digester, iron removal filter and bio-sand filter. These are low-cost, indigenous based materials and pro-poor technology aimed at improving access to water supply and proper sanitation services.

Studies made by DAR showed that installing these indigenous water supplies will eliminate too much iron and bacteria present in most water-wells in the rural areas. The device can also help reduce greenhouse emissions in the environment.

“We found out that diseases like E. Coli, diarrhea, amoebiasis and dysentery are among the common illnesses of farming folks that are lacking access to clean and safe drinking water. The installation of water filters like CPWASH and teaching the residents of proper hygiene and sanitation will ensure their safety from these diseases,” Leones said.

The DAR project will also enable farmers to learn how to construct the bio-gas digester that converts human wastes and other biodegradable trash into bio-gas, that residents can use for their cooking as a cheap alternative to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Under the project, concerned local government units (LGUs) will shoulder the cost of materials, the farmers’ organizations in the areas provide laborers and indigenous materials and the PCWS take care of the engineering technology through trainings and hands-on construction. (PNA)

HAPPY LA UNION DAY!!!

hugodiekonig
March 1st, 2011, 08:24 PM
La Union was carved from the nine towns of Pangasinan, three of Ilocos Sur and villages of the Eastern Pais del Igorotes in the Cordilleras. It was formally created by a Royal Decree issued by Queen Isabela of Spain on April 18, 1854. The name La Union indicates the union of towns from different provinces.

Spanish colonizers saw a thriving community when they arrived in La Union in 1572. The area was then a dynamic trading center especially for gold for Japanese and Chinese merchants.

The Augustinians were the first missionaries to build towns along the coast and converted the residents to Christians. The region became a base for the Spanish colonizers to exploit the gold mines in the uplands. In 1661, Andres Malong of Pangasinan tried to snatch La Union from the Spaniards but was later defeated at Agoo.

In the late 1700s, Ilocano immigrants moved to the region to look for greener pastures thus becoming the majority.

Modern La Union

Presently, La Union is still "young" when compared to older provinces such as Pangasinan, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Pampanga, Cebu and Cavite. It is a class - A, progressive and developing province. Its 155 years of existence since 1850 testifies to reality of the original vision -- a province geared towards peace, prosperity, growth and development. The original "dozen" towns have grown to 19 municipalities and a city. The additional eight are: Santol, San Gabriel, Bagulin, Burgos, Pugo, Tubao, Rosario and Sudipen. Although the rate of economic progress has been noticeable faster in the coastal towns, the interior towns have coped with the pace. The network of modern infrastructure has contributed to the present progressive condition in agriculture, commerce and industry. In the late 1990's, the national leadership declared La Union as one of the archipelago's 12 regional industrial centers.

Beach Fever

Since the advent of martial law in 1972, La Union has all the more progressed markedly. In commerce, merchants visit and trade from neighboring provinces. Every town has a "tienda" day. Aside from rice and tobacco, the inhabitants grow cotton, silk coconuts, cacao, mangoes and vegetables. The prime commercial and savings banks have their branches in San Fernando. The Central Bank of the Philippines has built its regional office thereat. Tourists are lured by the alluring beaches especially during the weekends. Thus, more new resort areas have mushroomed along the sandy beaches between Bauang and San Fernando. Filipinos have caught up the "beach fever". Nestled in one of the environment-friendly hills of the city of San Fernando is the home of the only botanical gardens north of Metro Manila. The other tourist-getting spots is the Pindangan ruins and Poro Point in the southern portion of the city.

I think one bright spot for another McDo store in San Fernando is a lot at the Poro Point Junction along Mc Arthur Highway, near the Tomb of Unknown Soldiers Monument, where some abandoned trucks are located. At this spot tourists from Poro Point as well as the proximate offices along the Diversion Road are the potential markets for this McDo store.

It is a strategic location indeed. The only problem that would arise probably is on acquiring the lot and the clearing operation especially on cutting the mango trees. As long as a new Mcdo store is located anywhere around the Monumento, this will probably be a hit

It is a strategic location indeed. The only problem that would arise probably is on acquiring the lot and the clearing operation especially on cutting the mango trees. As long as a new Mcdo store is located anywhere around the Monumento, this will probably be a hit
if money is not a problem and the lot owner is willing to sell his/her property then it can be done.

MANILA — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' (BSP) policy-making Monetary Board (MB) approved Thursday the opening of a currency exchange facility (CEF) that would allow Filipinos evacuated from Libya to exchange up to P10,000 worth of Libyan Dinar.

BSP officer-in-charge Juan de Zuñiga Jr., in a statement, said the Libyan Dinar is currently not convertible to Philippine peso, thus, they will tap commercial banks to accept this currency from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) displaced by the ongoing conflict in that northern African country.

"Establishment of the said facility is in line with government's efforts to assist OFWs that were displaced by the current conflict in Libya.

OFWs can only exchange their Libyan Dinar to peso upon presenting documentary proof of their travel from Libya, which include passport or valid travel papers issued and signed by the Philippine Embassy, stamped with the date of the OFW's arrival in the Philippines.

Relatively, BSP Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo, in a briefing Thursday, said the CEF will start operation upon publication of the memorandum for authorized agent banks, which he said is now being finalized.

He said OFWs who were evacuated from Libya will be given seven days upon arrival to Manila to exchange their Dinar holdings.

"Access to CEF is exclusive to returning OFWs affected by the conflict in Libya," he said.

Central bank's three regional offices namely in La Union, Cebu and Davao and its 18 branches nationwide will also welcome OFWs who will exchange their Dinar to peso, Guinigundo said.

"BSP will set the exchange rate and this will be posted on the BSP bulletin," he said.

To date, conversion of 1.23 Libyan Dinar is equivalent to one US dollar, he said.

Guinigundo noted that since Libyan Dinar is not convertible to peso right now they will exchange the ones they will be getting either with the Libyan central bank or a commercial bank willing to accept it.

Also, BSP will authorize agent banks located in airports to extend their banking hours in line with this move.

This is not the first time that the BSP opened a CEF as a result of an emergency situation.

In 1990, the central bank opened similar CEF to aid returning OFWs affected by the Kuwait-Iraq war; another one was opened in 2003 during the US-Iraq war; and then in 2006 during the Israel-Hezbollah war. (PNA)

Three drug pushers, including two women, were sentenced to life imprisonment after the court found them guilty of illegal drug trade.

Judge Victor Concepcion of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 66 in San Fernando City, La Union imposed the life imprisonment on Rosalinda Dumo, Delia Marzan and Jun Monton.

Aside from the imprisonment, the accused were ordered to pay P500,000 each as penalty.

The court said that life imprisonment was meted on the three because of strong evidence and the testimonies of the witnesses that proved they violated Article II of Section 5 of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 or RA 9165.

The three drug pushers were arrested by elements of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)-Regional Office 1 in a buy-bust operation on Sept. 4, 2008 in Barangay Pagdalagan Norte, San Fernando City, La Union.

In that operation, two sachets containing shabu were recovered from the suspects.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, March 3 (PIA) – Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas – La Union (BSP-LU) presented the new generation currency (NGC) which include all the six banknote denominations – 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1,000, to the various government, private , media and non-government organization sectors through its information campaign and press conference held recently here.

In an interview with BSP Deputy Governor Diwa Gunigundo, he informed the media practitioners in the locality that the decision to again change/modify anew the design of the existing banknotes is to ensure the integrity of our currency and to guard it against counterfeiters.

The present currency has been in place and circulating for about 25 years now, while other central banks redesign their banknotes every ten years on average, Gunigundo said.

The NGC, launched on December 16, 2010, can be described in four M’s: “Maganda”, “Matibay”, “Malinis”, and “Makulay”. Every year two (2) billion banknotes are needed though, but we have only printed 700 million pieces muna, ito lang muna ang inilabas na bilang para maging smooth ang transition, Gunigundo said.

“The present banknotes will remain in circulation and will continue to be accepted as legal tender for three more years, but at the end of 2012, there will be a call for phase-out of these bills and by 2013 wala nang value so dapat gastusin na natin iyong mga natitirang lumang pera natin”, a separate schedule for coins will follow, the official added.

In designing the new banknotes, the BSP Numismatic Committee has considered to pay tribute to Filipinos who played significant roles in the nation’s history, and they have highlighted world heritage sites and iconic natural wonders of the country, as approved by the BSP Monetary Board and President Benigno S. Aquino III

Our new banknotes, Gunigundo said, can hardly be counterfeited because it will require a lot of money to copy its new features.

Some of the special features presented by the BSP official include the RP seal and the new BSP logo, embedded security thread running vertically across the note which is visible from either side of the note when viewed against the light; the red and blue visible security fibers embedded on the paper at random and glow in two colors under ultraviolet light; ; a shadow image of the portrait and the numeral 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000, seen at the blank space of the note when viewed against the light from either side of the note; the serial number which composed of 1 or 2 prefix letters and 6 or 7 asymmetric (increasing in size) digits located at the lower left and upper right corners of the face of the note; embossed alpha-numeric amount which is vision-impaired friendly; the see-through mark or the word “PILIPINO” written in Baybayin (pre-Spanish Philippine writing system) is seen in complete form when the note is viewed against the light, and many more.

Gunigundo mentioned that they are also in the process of redesigning all the coin denominations and to do away with counterfeiters who used to deface and illegally export these coins due to its copper-nickel content, the BSP has shifted to nickel-plated coins for safety. (ANL/MPA-PIA 1 La Union)
