^^^^skyway kaya??
hehe

I think foreigner siya. Lets speak in english as best as we can so he would understand hehhe

I think 6 lanes is very costly, especially maraming properties rito ang malapit sa highway, ang iba pa nga ay even less than 10 meters from the centerline of the highway-a violation of the building code.

Hello kingvince! Welcome to San Fernando City and La Union Province forum? You are always welcome here!

Abt sa Robinsons, may drawing plans na at may lote na sila sa San Fernando, but the date of construction is still to be determined. We wait till Robinsons Pangasinan opens in early 2012. Baka sa 2013 umpisahan na ang Robinsos rito

About sa SM,may ginagawa ngayon na urban development plan sa Poro Point sa San Fernando including an SM mall.target date of construction might be on 2013 or 2015

So far Puregold is currently looking for a viable location also in San Fernando.construcition maybe this 2012 or 2013

Iyan ang sinasabi ng isa na motive daw niya, tinetest niya raw on how the forumers shouls act and react pag may ganoong issue

I think unethical yun sa isang forum, kasi public forum ito at iba iba ang sentimento at interpretation ng mga makakabasa, and yung sinabi pa niya ay very insulting sa mga ilocanos. Tapos ayun nagkaroon na ng mga conflicts

super conflict, which for me divides ilocos norte, sur and la union sa pangasinan..
dpat tau di n lng sumali, in the first place ang La Union ay galing sa probinsya ng Pang at I.Sur, so basically we have the best of both words..proud tau sa rich culture n hanggan ngyn ay mkkta sa i.sur at norte, and at the same time sa progress na natatamasa ng Pangasinan, in which aminin ntin, malaking ambon ang narereciv ntin mga tga LU..

It is just sad that those forumers are inactive nowadays, only few are left on these present days.

By Jun Elias The Philippine Star Updated December 23, 2011

AGOO, La Union, Philippines – La Union Rep. Eufranio Eriguel yesterday said President Aquino, through the Department of Public Works and Highways, has approved the widening of the national highway (Manila-North Road) covering the six towns in the province’s second district with a total cost of at least P350 million.

Eriguel said the bidding for the project is now ongoing and construction is expected to start in January.

With a stretch of at least 50 kilometers, the existing two-lane highway would be widened to become a four-lane road that would pass through the towns of Bauang, Caba, Aringay, Agoo, Sto. Tomas and Rosario.

December 15, 2011, 3:37am

MANILA, Philippines — The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) plans to maximize the potential of its unutilized assets spanning over 35,000 hectares of land with estimated value of over P10 billion.

BCDA president Arnel Casanova told reporters during its year-end press conference.

“Next year we will validate all masterplans of our assets because we have to unlock the value of these properties and offer these assets to the private sector and to develop this in joint venture with the private sector or privatize these properties,” Casanova said.

These properties include Clark airport, some areas in Camp John Hay Special Economic Zones that are unutilized, the abandoned power plant in Camp John Hay, the promotion of Poro Point as a regional hub and the development of San Fernando airport as an alternative to the Loakan airport of Baguio.

BCDA is thinking of adopting a public-private partnership scheme for the Port Point airport.

“With a strong business process outsourcing in Baguio and in San Fernando in La Union, we need to provide with a better airport facility,” Casanova said.

According to Casanova, there has been no flight in Poro Point airport because the navigational facilities and terminal are not yet there.

“Zest Air used to fly there, so we need to have a more strategic approach,” he said.

The Port of San Fernando basically handles Bulk and Break Bulk cargoes and receives most of its containerized shipments thru transshipments. The inadequacy or limitation of the pier gives rise to a higher inland freight or transportation cost and puts the transshipped cargoes at risk from hijackers and diversion. The solution is sea-freight transport with the use of self-sustaining feeder vessels that could be accommodated by the existing piers thus lowering inland freight or transport cost and affording cheaper merchandise to the general public or constituents of Region 1.

http://www.sanfernandocustoms.net/web/images/stories/portfiles/containerized1.jpg
The controversies or the intra corporate issues/disagreements hounding the port operations are now being resolved by BCDA and the regular courts. The resolutions of cases by the BCDA and regular courts shall free the litigated properties available to new stakeholders, locators, importers and exporters. In the master development plan of Poro Point Management Corporation a Cold storage facility and that of a yatch/fishing vessel manufacturer are foremost since it could serve the fresh produce storage and preservation requirement of fishermen and vegetable farmers alike, yatch/fishing vessel manufacturer with fish finder could be build and made available for loan/financing (bank) to fishermen cooperatives.

This cluster approach for economic development thru the containerization of the seaport and international operations of the airport, and development of TPLEX in consonance with the Anti-poverty campaign (MDG) of the Aquino administration shall boost prosperity, business development, progress and tourism for region 1.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union -- The Regional Development Council (RDC) has envisioned Ilocos Region (Region 1) to continue as the "Agribusiness and Tourism" growth center in the country for the next five years.

This was gleaned from a five-year development plan prepared by RDC which seeks to make Region 1 as a top destination for tourists and investments and consequently the food basket of the country from year 2011 to 2016.

In that five-year period, Region 1 is also expected to maintain the lead as a top producer of cash crops, like rice, corn, tobacco and vegetables, that could supply the needs not only of the whole nation but partly for North Asia.

La Union is not far behind in tourism as well as investments. Its Poro Point Special Economic Zone continued in 2011 as a major investment hub in the region.

But sadly, the San Fernando-Manila route via the San Fernando Airport was closed last year when the carrier that was servicing the route pulled out due to poor passenger patronage.

Nevertherless, La Union's tourism is continuously booming just like in other parts of the region.

THE National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has extended the permit of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) to operate landline services in La Union until 2028.

In an order, the regulator granted PLDT a certificate of public convenience and necessity (CPCN) to operate and maintain local exchange carrier (LEC) services in the municipalities of Bangar, Balaoan, Luna, and Sudipen. The extension is coterminous to its franchise, which will expire on 2028.

PLDT is a grantee of a legislative franchise under Republic Act 7082, which extended the term of applicant’s previous franchise under RA 6146 to 25 years from the expiration on November 23, 2003 or an extension until November 28, 2028.

Based on the NTC common carrier authorization department (CCAD) inspection report, PLDT’s telephone services in the municipalities of Bangar, Balaoan, Luna and Sudipen are still operational and continue to provide services to the public.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Dec. 26 (PIA) -- Around 30 linemen of the La Union Electric Company (LUECO) underwent recently a two-day free training course on comprehensive lineman’s training modules to bring reliable service to power customer conducted by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in Bauang town.

The training included a demonstration and a hands-on session on line maintenance operation.

The lineman’s training program is designed for electric cooperatives that acquired 69-kilovolt lines or sub-transmission lines and other distribution utilities without sub-transmission facilities, substations and other facilities.

5 Reasons Why I Have Half a Mind to Move Back to La Union
by: chibilog
blog link: link (http://riddlesofastarfish.blogspot.com/2011/12/5-reasons-why-i-have-half-mind-to-move.html)

As this post is written on Christmas Day (and on my Lolo's MacBook no less *weirdo grin of someone who's using a Mac for the first time and enjoying it, and yes, you read that right, it's my Grandpa's!!!*), I'd like to greet anyone who's reading this a happy Christmas! At the moment, I am in my hometown in San Fernando, La Union. I've been meaning to post something about my hometown for a while. But when I tried to look up pics that would sort of make my post less wordy, make things more self-explanatory, I found that I don't really have too many pics of my hometown in my hard drive. So, I'd just try my best to, you know, go the descriptively literary way.

But let me first frame this post with this thought: a week into my stay here, the idea of staying here permanently crossed my mind. That's a crazy thought, considering that I think most of my acquaintances here have gone on to greener pastures and more profit-oriented lifestyles. But there's really something in this place that draws me back. Here are the reasons why:

5. This place is CLEEEEEAAANNNN!
Yes, I am the perpetual O.C. I like things neat and orderly. And here, things are neat and orderly. I love the air which I can practically breathe in without fear of having lung cancer one day. I love the litter-less asphalt roads; I can walk to the plaza and to the market without encountering or (worse!) having to step on a disgusting pile of rotting vegetables. I bet even the cockroaches here are cleaner than the ones in QC! Everything here seems to be in order. I feel like I am in order, too; that is, I don't feel like garbage.

4. The time here is SLOW.
We always hear the notion that life in the province is slow-paced, compared to life in the city. Well, that's true here. Although San Fernando is considered a city, it's still very much probinsya. Everyone seems more patient. No one's rushing to wherever. As a corollary, drivers of PUVs are more careful. There's no eternal traffic jam. Right after lunch, for example, my whole family (and I mean this LITERALLY!) takes a nap. There must be a collective dream somewhere (as evidenced by the synchronized snoring) like we are all "incepted." And the world is at peace.

3. There's FOLIAGE! There's FOLIAGE!
Unlike the dusty and wilting and barely alive trees and "bushes" in Manila, Mother Nature thrives here!!! We're no Baguio with its towering pine trees, but we're always included in the list of cleanest and greenest cities in the Philippines. I love the rustle of the mango, guava and kamias leaves in our front yard, the cool December breeze that wafts through the wide-open windows of my room, the chirping of the ubiquitous mayas. And I love the smell of the sea. Yes, you really can smell the sea from where we live.

2. The people are NICE.
I must have had my share of encounters with rude people in QC to be including this here. As my Lola has said, in QC, everyone is kanya-kanya (to each his or her own). There's no concern for others. Never mind if someone's in a tight situation; it doesn't concern you. That's over-generalizing, of course. But here, unlike in QC, everyone seems to know virtually everyone. Well, there's a bad side to this, too. Chismis (gossip) spreads faster than, well, anything else. But, anyway, most of the people I know have moved on from here, so not a lot of people know me. I've been mistaken by some drunkards in the street for my brother (believe it or not, I actually liked the experience). The point is, even if it's not Christmas time, people seem to help each other more. Take my Lolo, for example. He has always hosted celebrations and fairs in our street. And when those events come, everyone helps in pasting banderitas on nylon strings, making palm-sized bamboo stars or angels, distributing bags of rice, cans of sardines and sausages, Payless noodles and Pancit Canton to families, and Hawhaw candy, Tootsie roll, Yakee and Pintura gum, and nameless generic candy to kids. People here still have a sense of community.

1. I can speak the LANGUAGE here.
Yes, that's the number one reason. I have always considered Ilocano my first language. Although surprisingly, I could barely understand the real "deep" Ilocano now (in written Ilocano, instead of k, we use c or q!), I find peace hearing the language I grew up with. I associate Ilocano with my childhood. My playmates and I used to curse each other in the language, but it's also the language we used to joke each other with. One can never fully appreciate a full-blown Ilocano joke if it's translated. But more than that, Ilocano is the language of my family. I still appreciate it if my brothers call me Manang (elder sister) or if my Mama calls me Naning (young girl). I still appreciate hearing the hardened Ilocano-accent "Goood morneng!" greeting of the relatives whenever they come to visit. Or even the Tagalog-Ilocano mix that my cousins use when they run out of words ("Nauyong si Ate!"/Ate is always angry). Ilocano is the language of the memories that I have of San Fernando. And it's the language of the home I always go back to.

^^ thanks Edmar! Finally magkakaMcdo narin sa heart ng city and we need not to travel to the nearest mcdo store anymore. The store will increase competition and more money would be circulating in the city, generating greater income to the city.hopefully we could also have other big malls like SM to fully provide a better shopping experince to us that other local malls do not completely have

Poro Point is the site of the former US military base Wallace Air Station and the location of a major Voice of America transmitting station in the Pacific. This 216 hectare seaport site is currently overseen by the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA), the national governmental agency responsible for converting to commercial use all former US military bases turned over to the Philippine government since 1992.
http://www.idcworld.com/citidesign/PoroPoint-Wallace.jpg
Located on the western side of Luzon island, Poro Point has not only an important natural deepwater harbor but also has major geographical advantages due to its close proximity to the South China Sea shipping routes and to China, Indochina, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
http://www.idcworld.com/citidesign/PoroPt-Philipp-MPlan-s.jpg
Since the early 1990's, the seaport has been envisioned by BCDA and the local towns in the region to become the major hub of a multimodal transport system for northrn Luzon. This includes transforming the port into an international container port, converting the previous military airport to commercial uses and connecting these as part of a regional system which also incorporates the Northern Luzon Railway and the existing trans-Luzon MacArthur Highway . Poro Point is also planned to become an important international tourism cruise destination within the Pacific.
http://www.idcworld.com/citidesign/PoroPoint-Loc1a-s.jpg
This project has cental importance to the future development of the region as local and national groups supporting Poro Point believe that the development of an international port will spur the economic development of nearby provinces La Union, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and the Cordillera Autonomous region.

yup regionwide ang progress natin :okay:

Ilocos provinces are sisters, so yung umaapaw na progress sa Norte ay sinasalo ng SUr, and vice versa. Laoag and San Nicolas will be the commercial hub in the Ilocos Provinces while the whole of Ilocos Sur naman ay patuloy paring yayaman mainly on agriculture (cash crops like tobacco, corn, palay) nagiging industrialized narin ang Sur. This province has now the best highway section ng Manila North Road dahil talagang pinalitan nila ng bago ang pavementng mga kalsada nila

Sa La Union naman, patuloy prin tayong magiging investment hub lalo na sa Poro Point. we still enjoy the progresses of the heavy industrialization of the province noong 1990s and early 2000s such as airport, seaport, economic zone, power plant, sanitary landfill, excellent roads and road networks, excellent communication facilities, etc. recently lang naging slow paced and growth ng La Union, but this year and at 2012 ay nakikita ko uli ang pagbilis ng Pag-unlad ng La Union

Pangasinan will continue naman to realize its development plans that were not realized before the change in their government leaders in 2007

RA 9009
Requisites for Creation. — (a) A municipality or a cluster of barangays may be converted into a component city if it has a locally generated average annual income, as certified by the Department of Finance, of at least One hundred million pesos (P100,000,000.00) for the last two (2) consecutive years based on 2000 constant prices, and if it has either of the following requisites:

(i) a contiguous territory of at least one hundred (100) square kilometers, as certified by the Land Management Bureau; or

(ii) a population of not less than one hundred fifty thousand (150,000) inhabitants, as certified by the National Statistics Office.

The creation thereof shall not reduce the land area, population and income of the original unit or units at the time of said creation to less than the minimum requirements prescribed herein.

(b) The territorial jurisdiction of a newly-created city shall be properly identified by metes and bounds. The requirement on land area shall not apply where the city proposed to be created is composed of one (1) or more islands. The territory need not be contiguous if it comprises two (2) or more islands.

(c) The average annual income shall include the income accruing to the general fund, exclusive of special funds, transfers, and non-recurring income."

I fully respect your opinion. I am just being fair because some readers from other provinces might react imaaturely to our posts.

For me, i'm not all about praising La Union, I and other forumers here as well are into reality naman. I'm proud that this thread is not a political thread, unlike in other threads (I wont mention those) na puro pambabatikos nalang sa pulitiko ang ipinopost, at isinisisi sa gobyerno lagi sa mga hindi magagandang nangyayari sa lugar nila. It would be unfair to them though dahil may part parin ang mamamayan na gagampanan nila sa mga lugar nila.

This program was also created to confer immediate recognition to police personnel for acts of courtesy and prompt delivery of service.

According to PRO1 Head P/Chief Supt. Franklyn Jesus Bucayu, the program specifically entails the conduct of intensive regionwide campaign against police personnel engaged in extortion or kotong, mulcting, bribery and other forms of illegal activities.

This is also part of PRO1 strategies in maintaining peace and order in the region which forms part of the Peace and Security program under the Regional Development Plan.

Dir. Nuestro is witnessing the demonstration of the honey processing in La Union Honeybee Center

Message of DA Secretary Proceso J. Alcala
(Message delivered by BAI Director Efren C. Nuestro on behalf of Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala during the inauguration & blessing of La Union Honeybee Center, Raois, Bacnotan, La Union, September 2, 2011)

The Honorable La Union First District Congressman Victor Ortega, former DA Secretary now Bohol Third District Congressman Arthur Yap; Governor Manuel Ortega, Mayor Rufino Fontanilla, NARTDI Executive, Dr. Apolonio Sito; OIC DMMMSU President, Dr. Diosdado Bangug; DMMMSU VP for R&E, Dr. Florentina Dumlao; Engr., Orlando Balloguing, President of Beekeeper Association of Philippines, Inc., Dr. Jose Reaño, private sector representative to the NARDTI Advisory Board, Provincial Board Member Pepe Ortega, fellow government workers, guests, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon to everyone and most specially our beekeepers.

It is an honor to for me to be invited here in this special occasion which is the inauguration and blessing of La Union Honeybee Center here in Raois, Bacnotan, La Union.

The Department of Agriculture, in general, and the Bureau of Animal Industry, in particular is happy to witness this momentous event as a new development in the honey industry in the Philippines. The Department of Agriculture has already recognized the inclusion of the apiculture/beekeeping asone of the commodities of the Department of Agriculture and the significant contribution of this emerging industry in the agriculture sector.

The country is producing honey at 150 metric tons per year. This is not enough to satisfy the requirement of the different end-users using this honey such as the households, hotels, restaurants and other institutional buyers. The country has imported honey in 2009 at 399 tons valued at $ US 1.32 million or an estimated peso value of P61 million. We are also importing artificial honey of 104 tons valued at P4 million. In 2009, the major supplier of natural honey is Australia which contributes around 89 percent of the supply of honey in 2009. India contributed three (3) percent, United States and Austria contributed both two (2) percent. Thailand and Egypt contributed both only one (1) percent.

With this new La Union Honeybee Center which the province of La Union envisioned to make your province the “Honeybee Capital of the North” we believe that this is a good move for the honey industry stakeholders to be competitive and profitable.:banana::banana::cheers:This center basically answers that concern of our beekeepers of getting one-stop-shop center that will help our beekeepers to improve their post-production and marketing activities of the supply chain of the bee industry which will encourage more farmers to go into the beekeeping and produce more honey.

The Secretary would be happy to note of the development of apiculture in La Union and rest assured that he will provide the much needed support to the industry.

On a personal note, BAI Director Efren Nuestro said that while going to La Union he saw billboard of a big fastfood chain which support in promoting the honeybee industry by posting says the words “Bee Happy” with their mascot. To him he says that it shows of the unity or cooperation of the food service stakeholder with the honey industry stakeholders for the apiculture development in the province.

Let’s all move forward to a higher level of call and become a “Champion” in our individual area of participation in the honeybee industry development in the country. Good afternoon again to each one and “Mabuhay ang honey industry” in La Union and in the Philippines.

BOTTLES of Naguilian’s most famous product carry the town’s seal.

Seeing the vineyards on a trip to Napa Valley in California in 2001, Aurelio Flora flirted with the idea of marketing the renowned sugarcane brew of his hometown of Naguilian in La Union, whose production had declined steadily over the years.

Flora knew it had promise. He had tasted imported wines and he knew that all these paled in comparison with Naguilian’s “basi.”

But Flora, the municipal agriculturist, knew only too well that the town lacked financial resources to start such a venture.

Mayor Reynaldo Flores, who saw the California vineyards with Flora, agreed to support his plans to save the industry.

Flora wanted to consolidate the homebased basi and vinegar production to keep the recipe consistent, to make it easy for government inspectors to assess the sanitary conditions of operations (inspectors visit every household selling basi, which means that they must check almost every home in Naguilian) and to present exhibits for tourists. (Flora said local officials had to ask families to clean their surroundings before tourists arrive.)

And then there’s the basi itself. No two people have the same interpretation of a brew and in Naguilian, residents differ in interpreting the perfect brew.
Ludovico Pulmano’s basi has been the face of Naguilian. All others in the Ilocos region take second spot to his brew, a consistent winner in competitions in municipal, provincial and regional trade fairs.

Sublime flavors

Pulmano, the only surviving basi brew master, has been making it for 75 years now. To this day, he continues to do so the way his grandfathers taught him—a natural blend of the sublime flavors of the earth nourished by the sweat from his brow.

He agreed to share his recipe to the local government on the condition that his sons be employed in the agriculture office.

A son, Dominador “Ador” Pulmano, now oversees operations in the processing plant built in Barangay Cabaritan Sur in 2005, where most of the basi and vinegar are made.

In the same year, municipal officials called in inspectors from the Bureau of Food and Drugs (now Food and Drugs Administration) to assess the operation.
The inspectors said the facility needed blinds to keep the dirt out from brewing areas, window screens to prevent birds from leaving droppings, and casings for lights to keep shards from falling into open vats if they break, among other things, Flora said.

On packaging, they said the wine should be in unused bottles, wrapped with a label and sealed with aluminum caps, he said.

Impressed

In 2007, the Department of Trade and Industry sent a Canadian wine connoisseur, Kelly Wilson, to Naguilian. Flora said Wilson was impressed with the wine but like the BFAD inspectors, he was not keen about the facilities and the packaging.

Flora said he could not get enough money to improve the facility because there was too much red tape in the government.

“In a wine facility in Bacnotan, for instance, the decision rests on one person only; hence investments are made quickly. Here, you have to persuade several people and a lot of things have to be considered before they decide,” he said.

The municipal accountant, for one, discourages local officials from investing because it might not yield enough returns, he said. “This has a negative impact on discussion. The industry should be allowed to become self-sufficient first before they bring up the issue on returns,” he said.

But much of the local government’s budget is allocated to barangay development projects and employees’ salaries. “Basi is not really a priority,” Flora said.

Serious problem

As with all agricultural industries, typhoons have also posed a serious problem. In 2009, Typhoon “Pepeng” caused widespread flooding in the town, destroying major sugarcane plantations and almost stopping basi production.
Apparently, sugarcane production had been declining in the years leading to 2009.

The Damortis in La Union, particularly in the small barangay of Sto. Tomas., is known for its dried-fish market, which can rival the more famous Tabo-an Market in Cebu.

DAMORTIS, SANTO TOMAS, LA UNION – Danggit or dried fish is always synonymous to Cebu, particularly dried fish market of Tabo-an, where these are sold by the truckloads.

But what few know is that danggit has always been the traditional method of Filipino fisherfolk in preserving caught fish. This is particularly true for subsistence farmers who dry their fish for later consumption.

Apart from Cebu, there are still a few other places in the Philippines where danggit is made into an industry for mass markets. One of these places is the town of Damortis in La Union, particularly the small barangay of Sto. Tomas.
This area is actually accessible as the McArthur Highway, which is the main coastal road that stretches all the way up to Ilocos (and also the main road that most Baguio buses take before turning right to Aspiras Highway).

EASTWEST Bank chairman of the board Jonathan Gotianun said the Philippines is definitely on a growth path and can face the next few years with optimism.

"The only question is how fast we will be growing, whether this growth will be moderate or be significantly above what we have experienced in the last decade. With the right government policies conducive to growth, I think we can aspire for the latter," he said during the 2011 Economic Briefing sponsored recently by EastWest Bank for senior executives of its corporate clients.

The EastWest Bank Economic Briefing featured presentations by two keynote speakers, noted economists Dr. Raul V. Fabella and Dr. Ramon M. Quesada. Dr. Fabella observed that Asia is the redeeming grace and has shown remarkable resiliency in the midst of a bleak global outlook. The overall health of the Philippine banking sector is sound and stable, with bank credit showing a 19 percent growth, he said. On the other hand, Dr. Quesada said while the Philippines had taken off as a nation but "came back to earth," specific individuals, industries and integrated areas continued to post remarkable growth in the past few decades.

EastWest’s annual economic briefings are one of the services the bank gives its corporate and entrepreneur accounts to help them keep abreast with current economic trends and developments that have impact on their businesses. "These can provide valuable insights not only on directions the economy is taking but also on the opportunities one might be able to explore, given these trends," Gotianun noted.

Dr. Fabella noted there was not much the government can do about the downward trajectory in the country’s GNI and GDP growth rates since these reflect the global activity slowdown. Weak government spending, which appears to be a ‘planned lethargy,’ and exports weighed down 2011 growth. The commodity price slowdown due to global slowdown has helped tame domestic inflation, possibly hitting 4 to 4.5 percent by year end. Remittances from Filipino global workers and BPO are still a main source of the country’s growth.

While weaknesses in major developed economies continue to drag the global recovery and pose risks for world economic stability, developing countries in Asia will continue to drive the global recovery, but their output growth is also expected to moderate to 6.0 percent on average during 2011-2012.

The local banking sector has remained sound and stable and is expected to withstand the headwinds from the US and Europe, Dr. Fabella said. Profitability ratios have shown consistent average upward growth since 2001, with return on equity hitting a high of nearly 13 percent and return on assets nearly 2 percent in 2010

In terms of income classes, Dr. Quesada reported as of 2009, the Philippines, along with Indonesia, Vietnam and Rural China was transitioning into middle class; Brunei and Singapore were classified as largely affluent; Malaysia, Thailand and Urban China as largely middle class; and Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar as largely low income.

He said the country’s gross domestic regional product (GDRP) was estimated at P8.5 trillion in 2010, of which Metro Manila produced P3.1 trillion or 36.5 percent, followed by Calabarzon, Central Luzon, Central Visayas, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao, Soccsksargen, Ilocos, and Bicol making up the top ten.

As of 2007, the top 15 Philippine provinces with high average family income were Bataan, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, Batanes, Pampanga, Ilocos Norte, Benguet, Batangas, Nueva Vizcaya, South Cotabato, Zambales, La Union and Ilocos Sur.

Top 10 Philippine cities with high average family income included Makati, Quezon City, Las Pinas, San Juan, Paranaque, Pasig, Iloilo City, Mandaluyong, Manila and Pasay, as of the 2000 National Statistics Office census.

Dr. Quesada noted that the cities with high family income were those with high population density. In an international course where he was a speaker, he said the other country delegates were envious of our population. These were wealthy countries but whose population was aging.

The worldwide trend also shows more late marriages, two-children families, same gender preference, and increasing work migration with over half a million Filipinos going abroad.

Acknowledging its clients’ support in boosting the bank’s performance, EastWest Bank president and CEO Antonio Moncupa reported that EastWest has outgrown the banking industry by a factor of three times.

"Our compounded growth rate is at about 30 percent in terms of total assets, total deposits and total loans, as against the annual industry compounded growth rate of 9 percent. Our NPL continues to be very much under control, resulting in EastWest Bank being now one of the most profitable banks in the industry in terms of equity and returns on assets," he said.

Referring to a recent newspaper report, Moncupa also said EastWest Bank was recently recognized by The Asian Banker, a multinational company that provides business intelligence on the financial services industry, as one of the 500 strongest banks in Asia. "While we are still towards the end (of the list of 500), what is significant is we have registered the most significant progress among all global banks in the Philippines, the largest gainer with a 191 percent increase in 2010 profits vs. 2009 income."

He also underscored the distinction of EastWest being the only bank with a loan portfolio that is more or less equally divided between consumer and corporate loans. The bank also aims to have at least 300 branches in the next three years.

EastWest is in the midst of preparations for a planned initial public offering by the first semester of 2012. "With this, we hope to signal to the banking public that we have prepared to be more transparent, to improve our governing practices, to further assure our customers that their money is safe with EastWest, and that we are building more capabilities to meet their needs in terms of loans and other important services," Moncupa disclosed.

Moncupa said these efforts are encapsulated in the bank’s recent re-branding exercise led by FutureBrand, one of the more prominent branding companies in the world, which came up with the bank’s new logo of two conjoined chevrons in light green, purple and magenta and its new tagline, Your Dream Our Focus

Nearby the Baluarte, we got to see so many pebbles and big stones scattered along the shore. I know that the town of Luna is known for its pebbles - some are even exported, if I heard it correctly.

Many folks - old and young gather pebbles along the shore. Some of them have specific size to gather, depending on what was asked for them to gather. They are paid per each bucket of pebbles filled; the man I talked to said to me that he will be paid 10 pesos per each bucket delivered to the station.

This man gathers the super small pebbles - which will be delivered to different construction supplies shop. It was such a hot and sunny day, so even if Ria and I wanted to check the whole stretch of the shore to see the workers and maybe talk to them, we just couldn't.

This man was already quite old to work, but he told us gathering stones wasn't that difficult to do - as the waters of the sea gives them the pebbles - they will just have to choose and pick the ones they needed. Of course, the difficult part of the job was to carry the buckets to the station, but I am sure this man can ask help from other workers.

The pebbles are gifts from Mother Nature, so tourists can actually pick whatever pebble they fancy. Ria got herself one medium sized rock, while I took these pebbles - because they're of different colors and I could place them on our ornamental pots at home.

Knowing just how close this place is from the church, I think I will always drop by this beach whenever I travel to this town. The beach itself is not suitable for swimming and dipping (because of the pebble gathering), but we were told there is a resort somewhere for tourists who wanted to enjoy the waters.

Yes, Don told that. He said it is currently a rumor right now at Rosario. We hope for the positive news soon
well if it will push through, that's a good news for LU. The marketing bright boys of SM know exactly what locations are feasible or not. So let's wait and see about this rumored project.

Rosy employment picture in 2012

MANILA, Philippines — Employers expect better employment picture in 2012 on back of the implementation of some of the huge projects under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) program, the flagship infrastructure development program of the Aquino government.

Edgardo B. Lacson, president of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP), said there would be additional jobs from the PPP projects starting in the first quarter of 2012.

Lacson said that government is accelerating the first PPP projects like the Daang Hari road. If the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union expressway pushes through, this would also provide a big stimulus. The government is set to bid out 16 PPP projects next year.

crossed fingers for this  The market population (South La Union plus Sison and Pozurubbio and some areas in Benguet)might be a tough justification for an SM mall but travellers bound to Baguio and Ilocos through TPLUEx could suffice
