Luke Landrigan dances with the waves of La Union
According to the Department of Tourism, surfing spots in the country includes La Union, Aurora, Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte, Samar, Zambales, Catanduanes, Badoc Island in Ilocos Norte, Vigan in Ilocos Sur, Daet in Camarines Norte and Quezon province, among others.
New waves
Among the best surfing destinations in the country is Urbiztondo, La Union. It has been transformed into a surfing paradise that offers a complete surfing lifestyle.
“Six years ago, there were handful who frequented La Union for surfing, but now even weekends are full of surfing amateurs who are willing to pay P300 to P400 an hour to learn how to surf,” reported DOT RO-1 regional director Martin Valera.
Valera is also very proud of the people of La Union who, according to him, are voluntarily taking care of the surfing area.
Best surfing destination
For Luke Landrigan, president of the La Union Surfing Club (LUSC), Urbiztondo, La Union tops his surfing destination list.
“La Union caters to beginners and professionals. Our beach bay is perfect for beginners, and the waves here works both right and left, with the left being the longer ride over a sand bottom,” explained the silver medalist in the Bali Asian Beach Games in 2008.

Where the mountain meets the sea
Approximately two hours away from Pangasinan is the province of La Union. While most tourists often flock to La Union for surfing, the province has more to offer than its surging waves. Its name indicates the union of the towns from the different provinces surrounding La Union. The province was carved from nine towns of Pangasinan, three of Ilocos Sur and several villages from the Cordilleras.
It boasts of natural wonders like waterfalls and caves, as well as religious and cultural tourist destinations such as Our Lady of Namacpacan Church and Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Charity, among others.
Tourists are often lured here by its sandy beaches and surfing breaks, especially during weekends. So it is not surprising to see that more and more resorts have mushroomed along its shorelines, usually between Bauang and San Fernando. Take for instance Kahuna Beach Resort and Spa, a Balinese-inspired boutique resort situated at the heart of San Juan, one of the most frequently-visited surfing destinations in the Philippines. La Union is home to the biggest cement factory in the country, managed by Holcim Philippines. As one of the leading cement manufacturers in the Philippines, Holcim knows its responsibility to maintain sustainable development in the areas where they are operating. They aim to manage resources prudently to ensure that future generations can meet their own needs.
Environmental safety is their daily business. That’s why they invested in an environmental protection and enhancement program that includes biodiversity enhancement and progressive quarry rehabilitation. The result of this initiative is the Holcim Eco-trail, a green place amidst the quarry itself, perhaps like the oasis in the desert.
After an adventurous day of traversing and exploring the wonders of La Union, it was nice to come home to a serene yet luxurious place. Greatly influenced by the Santorini Islands of Greece, the Thunderbird Resorts is situated in a 65-hectare land area located at Poro Point, San Fernando City.
The Mediterranean-inspired resort is nestled on a scenic cliff overlooking the white sand beach and the vast South China Sea, with its stylish yet cozy suites perched up high, thus providing that panoramic view. Its distinct terrain, character and contours followed the original lay of the land and worked around the natural environment.

Launched on March 15 at the Powerplant Mall, global surf brand Aloha Baordsports announced through its president Freddy Gonzales that their patrons—whether surfers or non-surfers—are just a raffle ticket away from visiting one of Asia’s top surf destinations. Bali, of course, is always included in a surfer’s must-visit list, with such amazing waves in Padang Padang, Kuta Reef and Canggu.
Aloha Boardsports’ president Freddy Gonzales recognized the growing interest for surfing all over the globe. “More and more people are getting into surfing,” he said at the launch, which is why the brand is eagerly promoting the sport, not only in Bali but also the country’s local surfing spots.
He listed San Juan, La Union, Lanuza Bay and Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte, and Cemento Beach in Baler, Aurora as top surf spots. For the company, Surf Bound: Bali is the just beginning of promoting the sport to boost local tourism.

La Union
La Union, “The Unity” or “The Union” in Spanish, was called as such as it was formed in 1850 by the Spaniards to combine several towns originally from Pangasinan, Ilocos Sur and Benguet.
Eat: Tupig (char-grilled suman or rice cake in banana leaves), green suman with latik (coco jam), or homemade tocino (honey-cured pork) and small longganisa (pork sausage) in whole-wheat bread.
Pray: The Basilica Minore (Minor Basilica) of Our Lady of Charity has been more popularly called the Agoo Church. Its location, Agoo, is La Union’s oldest town presumably discovered by Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo. The church was built in the 15th century by Fr. Aquilino Garcia. It is more popular in recent times for its 1989 to 1993 “Miracles of Agoo,” which involved alleged paranormal phenomena like dancing sun, weeping Our Lady icon, and apparitions reportedly seen by a local trans woman, Judiel Nieva or Angel dela Vega.
In Luna, there is also Santa Catalina De Alejandria Parish, which has been built between the 18th to 19th centuries by the Augustinians. It houses the century-old, larger-than-life image of the Blessed Virgin Mary known as the Our Lady of Namacpacan, believed to be miraculous as the whole church burned except for the image. Legend has it that the image came to life to feed the townsfolk during famine.
Love: The Bohemian, international and youthful vibe of the surfing community and resorts in San Juan starkly contrast the laidback, old-fashioned feel of the rest of La Union.

1. I-dedevelop muna yung airport (matatapos siguro by 2014)
2. I-dedevelop muna ang Poro Point
4. 2015 ang sinasabing plano ng SM to put up a mall sa La Union
5. aabot na sa 800,000 ang population ng La Union by 2014

hugodiekonig March 26th, 2012, 02:59 AM Growth to come from expanding customer base

Phinma-led Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corp. is targeting a record-high profit for this year, with a projected 20-percent increase from last year’s net of P408.2 million.
This places the target net income for 2012 at about P490 million.
According to Trans-Asia Oil president Francisco L. Viray, the profit increase is expected to come from a bigger customer base that may be brought about by the commissioning of a power facility within this quarter and the implementation of the open access and retail scheme.
Viray said the 21-megawatt bunker power plant of the CIP II Power Corp., which was dismantled in January last year, would soon be ready to resume operations in Bacnotan, La Union.
The transfer of the power station to a new site will maximize its operating capacity as a merchant plant in northern Luzon and provide reliable embedded power to better serve Trans-Asia Oil’s long-term bilateral contract with Holcim Philippines Inc.

Miguel Cerqueda and Jack Mitchell
Miguel Cerqueda and Jack Mitchell like to talk about new beginnings. It is appropriate, considering the new hats that both have been sporting since March 1, 2012, when a company Cerqueda started more than a decade ago has been fully acquired by a new partner and is now known under a different name.
Cerqueda is the new president of Thunderbird Hotels Asia, and Mitchell is the new chairman, while retaining his position as CEO of the mother company Thunderbird Resorts. This new entity is a subsidiary of Thunderbird Resorts, an international property developer of resorts and casinos in Asia and Latin America.
Cerqueda was previously the head of the Genesis Hotels and Resorts Corp. (GHRC). Genesis is an all-Filipino company that was incorporated in 1999 with the objective of helping owners and developers of new and existing hotels and resorts in the Philippines gain competitive edge through their professional management services.
On the other hand, Thunderbird Resorts is an international developer of themed resorts. It is in the NYSE listing in Amsterdam (Euronext: Tbird). It provides branded casino and hospitality services in five countries — Costa Rica, India, Nicaragua, the Philippines and Peru. In the Philippines, they own and operate the Thunderbird Resorts in Poro Point, La Union and the Thunderbird Resorts in the province of Rizal.
He said that Thunderbird sees Asia as the growth area for the coming decades. More than the country’s vast natural resources and beautiful land and seascapes, he said that the number one asset of the Philippines is its people.

(ANL/BPP-PIA 1, Ilocos Sur)

Considered to be the Surfing Capital of Northern Philippines because of the friendly swells in the municipality of San Juan, many surfing enthusiasts consider La union a favored surfing destination after Siargao, both for amateurs and pros. The best time to surf in La Union would be October to March (when the North Swell arrives) and May to August (when the South Swell arrives).

Ma-Cho Temple, San Fernando, La Union
I have been to Poro Point (which was once an American military base) and climbed the old lighthouse there, the La Union Botanical Gardens, the La Union Cathedral (a.k.a. as St. William the Hermit Church) and the environment-friendly La Union dump site (a no mean feat for a local government unit like La Union). Since I have been practically around town, Margareth took me to the Ma-Cho Temple. We went there at dusk time. This pretty Taoist Temple provides a panoramic vista of the City of San Fernando, the San Fernando Bay area and Poro Point. The structure is also a living testament to the dynamic and entrepreneurial Filipino-Chinese community in San Fernando. The temple is home to the image of Ma-Cho whom the Chinese consider to be a goddess of the seas. I must mention that there is a close resemblance between the image of the Virgin of Casaysay from Taal, Batangas and the image of Ma-Cho from San Fernando. In fact, they are believed to be the one and the same by some. It is noteworthy that come the month of September, devotees of Ma-Cho gather for the annual celebration of enshrinement for a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Saint Martin in Taal, Batangas and from there, the devotees together with the image of Ma-Cho travel back to San Fernando City followed by a procession around the city. This just shows the close affinity between the two images as passed on from one generation to the other by way of tradition.

MANILA, Philippines - Cement-manufacturer Holcim Philippines expects a modest growth rate of five to six percent this year as it attempts to recover from a steep drop in net profit last year, its chief operations officer Roland van Wijen said yesterday.
The Philippine subsidiary of Switzerland-based Holcim Ltd. posted a net profit of P2.03 billion last year, down by 47.1 percent from P3.84 billion in 2010 because of weak demand and higher production costs.
With a workforce of over 1,700 Holcim operates four plants in La Union, Bulacan, Misamis Oriental and Davao. It produces four cement products: Holcim Excel, Holcim WallRight, Holcim Premium Bulk and Holcim 4X which are sold in bags, tonner bags and in bulk.

hugodiekonig March 28th, 2012, 03:16 AM Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas granted written approval to Rang-ay Bank’s application to open ten (10) new Banking Offices as it strives to serve more municipalities in the region and ensure that these areas have access to competitive financial services.
The bank’s branching strategy is to ensure that Rang-ay Bank services are accessible to a greater client base and to grant more people access to banking services. The plan is to increase bank presence in the bank’s primary home base, La Union, to be followed by additional branches in Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan and Benguet. The bank will put up in towns which have limited access to formal financial services.
The bank offices shall offer full deposit and remittance services. Each office will focus on servicing depositors as well as remittances and marketing micro insurance. Microfinance and micro agriculture loans will be also offered.
La Union and Ilocos Sur are the main theaters of operations of the bank, with seven banking offices each to be expanded to ten for each province with offices to be opened in Bangar, Aringay and Rosario in La Union and Sinait, Sto. Domingo and Sta. Lucia in Ilocos Sur for the first wave of expansion. The bank also has approved licenses in Dingras and Bacarra Ilocos Norte, both towns being served by only one rural bank. The bank has been operating a branch in Laoag City since 1998, catering to microfinance clients for the past thirteen years. This has honed the branch’s personnel’s experience and expertise in microfinance operations and services to be able to expand and provide modern banking services in the target towns.

As a global company, cement maker Holcim has withstood two world wars and the Great Depression.
This is largely due to the blueprint provided by Ernst Schmidheiny and Adolf Gygi, who founded the company in 1912. Under their watch, they laid out a format that gave Holcim international success: expansion plans by crossing borders, continuous integration proven by its innovative product offerings, and technological advancements that promote responsible operations.
Holcim's presence in the Philippines goes back to as early as 1974. Holcim — then known as Holderbank — partnered with the owners of what would become Alsons Cement Corporation, which operated a plant in Lugait, Misamis Oriental. The partnership included the provisions for technical assistance in cement manufacturing, and training opportunities in the Swiss village of Holderbank. In 1998, Holcim acquired shares of a company that later became Union Cement Corporation (UCC), a merger of three companies which had cement plants in La Union, Bulacan and Davao. Four years later, UCC acquired ownership of Alsons Cement. In 2004, UCC was renamed Holcim Philippines, Inc.
Today, Holcim Philippines is the country's leading cement company, with a workforce of over 1,700 in its four cement plants and other facilities.

Perseus II March 28th, 2012, 04:47 AM a forumer posted that their proposed another SM is going to be the regional mall coz its bigger than the one in the summer capital.
Sana tigilan ang mga ganyang post kasi there is no such thing as SM regional mall :ohno:
for the sake of argument though, what becomes of SM Clark which is going to house an IMAX theater in the future and the 7-storey SM San Fernando aside from the sprawling SM City Pampanga.

MANILA -- Eufranio Eriguel, a doctor by profession, remained as representative of La Union's second district after the Supreme Court affirmed his victory in May 2010 automated elections.
In a recent full court ruling, the justices set aside the petition of defeated congressional candidate Thomas Dumpit Jr. challenging the decision of the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) denying for lack of merit his motion for reconsideration.
The court said Dumpit failed to "sufficiently show" that any grave abuse of discretion was committed by the HRET in rendering the assailed decision "which, on the contrary, appear to be in accord with the facts and applicable law and jurisprudence."
The HRET, which also includes three SC justices as members, earlier rejected Dumpit's appeal on the December 1, 2011 ruling against his complaint.
In the decision, the HRET said Dumpit failed to present enough evidence that Eriguel cheated his way to victory.
Records show that Eriguel had winning margin of 57,709 votes after he garnered 121,236 votes as opposed to 63,622 votes for Dumpit. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)

$800K Septage Treatment Facility launched in San Fernando City
SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Mar 29 (PIA) -- After the project groundbreaking in July 16, 2010 by U.S. Ambassador Harry Thomas, the San Fernando City Septage Treatment Facility (STF) located in Barangay Dallangayan Oeste was finally launched on March 26 which aims to improve water sanitation in the city and ensure a healthy and environment for all.
The Facility is a collaborative project of the city government of San Fernando with the USAID – Philippine Sanitation Alliance (USAID-PSA), the Rotary International, the Rotary Club of San Fernando La Union Chapter, and Congressman Victor F. Ortega, in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environment and Management Bureau and the Department of Health.
“This is a project we longed to realize to avoid water contamination in the household, thus improving the water sanitation in the city by requiring every household and business establishments to dislodge their respective septic tanks every five years pursuant to the Environmental Code of the Philippines,” city mayor Pablo C. Ortega said during the launching.

EATING outdoors may be one of the best things about summer. Just as the scorching heat fades away, summer nights provide a great excuse for setting up the garden or terrace and enjoying al fresco dinners. Summer too, gives us an excuse to fire up the grill more often. Although we live in the tropics and are used to hot and dry weather, summer usually guarantees clear and rain-free nights.
Grilling, though one of the most basic and probably one of the oldest methods of cooking, is on top of my list. Just the preparation involved, the managing of the wood or coals, the smoke that envelops the surrounding area, seem to all point toward a great meal.
My most memorable grilled meal happened a few years back in La Union. One of my best friends since grade school, Alfred Ortega, usually invites us to their hometown of San Fernando, La Union. Countless semestral breaks, Christmas breaks, summers and long weekends were spent at their lovely beach house swimming, eating, golfing and goofing around. A few years ago, I brought a cousin from Canada along to enjoy the beach and drive up to Baguio, as well. After snorkeling for the better half of a day, we decided to build a bonfire and grill some seafood and pork belly. Whole tuna grilled to medium rare, pork belly, ensalada with lots of salted eggs and heaps of rice while sitting on sand and dining on a makeshift table with friends—what could be better?
For this week’s recipe, I decided to veer away from the soy sauce-based or sweetish flavors usually associated with grilled food. Searching in my memory bank of food shows and cookbooks I have read, I suddenly remembered a favorite among South Americans*—chimichurri. Like most famous and classic dishes and condiments, versions of chimichurri are as varied as the food they are served with. From fish to fowl, sausages, offal and beef and pork, chimichurri seems to go with just about anything. Traditional chimichurri is green and has garlic, shallots, cilantro, lime and chilies as the most basic ingredients. This, I thought was perfect since those flavors are familiar to us Asians and the ingredients are readily available. And since chimichurri has so many versions and applications, you can feel free to also change it up.
My version of this great sauce (which can be a marinade and relish at the same time) has roasted green tomatoes, and instead of using chilli powder as stated in most recipes, I used roasted green chillies for the heat and smoky flavor.
Grilled Steaks with Chimichurri Sauce
Ingredients:
4 pcs steak (ribeye, striploin, sirloin or any cut you prefer)
1 head garlic, minced
2 shallots, minced
1 large bunch cilantro, finely chopped
juice of 2 limes plus the zest
6 pcs roasted green chilies, finely chopped
4 pcs, roasted green tomatoes, chopped
1 cup olive oil
salt to taste
Procedure:
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Marinate beef in chimichurri for one hour. Grill steak and other meats, if any, over very hot coals. Serve with bread or tortillas, and serve chimichurri as relish.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, March 29 (PIA) -- This city continues to implement the Septage Management Program to help protect people and the environment. A local ordinance mandates septic tanks in the city are dislodged on a five year schedule.
Other areas in the country implementing this, in compliance with the Clean Water Act of 2004, are Metro Manila, Dumaguete City, Alabel, and Sarangani.
The USAID, Rotary Club of San Fernando La Union Chapter, Rotary International, Sustainable Cities International in Canada today continues to provide assistance to places like San Fernando City.
Thus San Fernando City has stepped initiatives on health and sanitation as manifested by the recent launching of its Septage Treatment Facility located in Barangay Mameltac, for a healthy life along with proper sanitation.(JCR/MHH-PIA1 La Union with reports from http://www.citynet-ap.org)

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, March 28 – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Region 1 is set to mobilize its maintenance crews, drivers and other personnel in various parts of the highways to assist motorists in line with the agency's program "Lakbay Alalay" this summer and the Holy Week.
A report said several teams have already been organized to be deployed along strategic areas of the highways in the region where the motorists will pass through en route to the different provinces of Region 1.
Many projects are currently ongoing along the Manila-North Road from Rosario to Bauang, La Union which may slow down the flow of vehicles.
In La Union, emergency vehicles/towing equipment like dump truck, payloader and other equipment will be provided 24/7, to be boosted by equipment from the DPWH regional office.

Lucia town just south lang ng Candon
hugodiekonig March 29th, 2012, 02:49 PM Puregold plus Savemore muna for LU.
hugodiekonig March 29th, 2012, 02:51 PM by 2014 din, on-time siya sa opening ng TPLUEx. Ang Rosario palang nga ngayon ay umuusbong na, how about kapag nagbukas na ang TPLUEx? the expressway would bring more investments sa LU

sa ngayon di muna kami umaasa sa SM La Union, until may aggressive interest talaga sila. according sa napag-usapan rito noong thread 11 or 12 palang dito, maliit lang ang income ng SM Baguio, even SM Rosales so hanggang Savemore nalang muna rito. I could estimate na kalahati ng shoppers sa SM Baguio are from La Union, Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan, dahil usually tambayan/rendezvous lang naman ang SM Baguio roon, hindi naman lahat ng nandoon ay talagang bumibili

Manila, Philippines - “Sa'n tayo sa bakasyon?“
The question may sound simple, but it's rather hard to answer. The underlying considerations such as budget, companions, schedule, time constraints, and most of all, where to go are the major factors that make the question a bit complicated.
If you want to learn a new sport: Surf's up in La Union
Surfing has begun catching on among Pinoy teens and young adults. The Philippines is home to numerous levels of surfing challenges, and one of the most popular destinations for surfing in the country is Urbiztondo beach in La Union. Its proximity to the metro as well as the surfing clinics it offers makes it an ideal destination for surfers and those who want to learn the sport.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, March 31 (PIA) -- Aiming to mitigate the impact of climate change in the country, Information Officer Filipina Atabay of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) here urged everyone to participate in the 5th year celebration of the Earth Hour tomorrow between 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. or even beyond one hour.
According to Atabay, this is to show support and leadership to address climate change by using the Earth Hour as a platform to showcase to the world what measures are being undertaken in the country to reduce carbon footprint, total set of greenhouse gas emissions caused by an organization, event, product or person.
“By switching off your lights for earth hour, you are making a statement on the indiscriminate threat of global warming and a commitment to a low carbon lifestyle," Atabay said.

In La Union, emergency vehicles/towing equipment like dump truck, payloader and other equipment will be provided 24/7, to be boosted by equipment from the DPWH regional office.

chris_tian April 1st, 2012, 01:38 PM yay, thread 14 na pala! i love LA UNION!
regarding these unending rumors of malls, sa akin lamang, most of us here (friends, relatives etc) do not need bigger malls because basically CSI caters one of the biggest grocery and pang masa clothing shops. If Robinson will come to SFC, it is still the same outlets will sprout minus the movieworld, the same thing with SM.
Most of us here looking for not so high end garments like Zara, Mint, FnH, Toms, Lacoste, Sanuk sandals and more. I wish they will come to SFC to put up a single store. Also Fitness First or sana a pleasant gym na lang. Starbucks, I dont think so. A nice movie house may do also.
May DIY, chains of hardware outlets, fastfood chains, Halo Halo de iloko, Midway Grill, The Hang Out and more. These are humble stores that are now serving to many people of La Union and tourists.
Bigger malls are playing hide and seek in our province but because of politics, these are wishful thinking at the moment. If nandiyan na ang cranes, builders etc, then we should be thankful, as they say Malls are not just a sign of progress, maybe an icing to my cake.

From the numbers 10-19, 14 is the number for love :lovethem: I Love La Union too!
Entry of other malls in the city signifies strength in economy, business confidence and open enterprise. With that, options multiply, from clothing line to restaurants, food shops, services, etc. Malls do have effect on everyone's ever changing and ever demanding lifestyle. I believe that with the entry of other malls, competition will improve, magpapababahan ng presyo ang mga malls at mga ibang business establishments sa mga prices ng commodities nila to entice customers, with that panalo ang mga tao rito dahil makakamura sa bilihin.
Yup, for now, those garments store common to those high-end malls would put up a store muna rito sa SFC habang wala pang another big mall. I'm a fan of mint :D
in order for local and incoming businesses to grow and flourish in the city, I believe tourism must be strengthened, para masuportahan rin ng mga tourists ang mga businesses rito sa San Fernando and province wide :cheers1:
Let us just wait for big developments to come. It's been long overdue

hugodiekonig April 1st, 2012, 04:09 PM Power firm Team Energy eyes 10 renewable energy ventures
Projects to boost Luzon grid capacity
By: Amy R. Remo

Team Energy, a partnership between Japanese firms Marubeni Corp. and Tokyo Electric and Power Co., is keen on pursuing at least 10 renewable energy projects that will use geothermal, biomass and hydro resources.
Team Energy president and CEO Federico Puno said the company was looking at developing six hydropower projects, namely, the Lueco mini hydro in San Juan, La Union; Philex Tailings Pond and the Asin hydropower projects in Tuba, Benguet; the Kalinga mini hydro in Tabuk, Kalinga; Hydrotec power projects in various sites in Luzon and Visayas, and the Talubin and Caneo mini hydropower project in Mountain Province.
These hydropower projects—which are now in varying stages of evaluation, negotiation, exploration and development—are expected to generate between 1 and 6 megawatts.

hugodiekonig April 1st, 2012, 05:33 PM FLUVIAL PARADE: A HOLY WEEK SPECIAL
On its 17th year, Bauang will hold its electrified fluvial parade from April 2 to 6 along the coastal areas of Baccuit Sur to Pagdalagan Sur and back. The fourteen Stations of the Cross are each carried by a banca all pulled by a motorized one carrying the Way of the Cross.
Both residents and tourists billeted along the hotels along the coastline areas anticipate and take part in this event as they light their candles and pray the Holy Rosary which starts six o’ clock in the evening or after the last rays of the sun fade out everyday from Holy Monday until the Good Friday.
“This is one way we can reflect on the sufferings, sacrifices and death of our Jesus Christ,” Mayor Martin de Guzman III said. “We are making this a traditional Lenten activity not just for the Catholics of Bauang but also to the tourists who visit the town for their holiday getaway,” he added.
“There are some tourists who make it an annual Lenten undertaking who frequent our town because of our unique observance of the Holy Week,” Engr. Lourdes Gapasin, the General Services Officer, added.
Aside from the fluvial parade, Palm Sunday Masses at the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish open the holy week. The traditional seven last words (Siyete Palabras),a Celebration of the Lord’s Passion and a Procession during the Good Friday, an Easter Vigil Mass signaling the celebration for the resurrection of Jesus Christ and finally an Encuentro (Sabet) before a Misa ti Umili caps the traditional religious observance.
The Parish is also another place where Catholic families and different church organizations from the different parts of Luzon visit for their annual Visita Iglesia.
The first Lenten fluvial parade was started in 1996 during the term of Mayor Martin de Guzman III as a Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member and as Committee Chairman for Tourism and he vows to continue the unique religious tradition putting Bauang in the map of must see and must be there place during the holy season. It offers not just the beauty of the beaches during the summer season but something more spiritual and reflective during the holy week.

THE JAPANESE joint venture TeaM Energy is looking to invest in ten renewable energy projects across the country to add to its portfolio, an official said last week.
The partnership between Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) and Marubeni Corp. bared a list of hydroelectric, geothermal and biomass projects which are under various stages of development.
“We are looking at some mini-hydro projects in the North. There are also other renewable energy projects in the pipeline,” TeaM Energy President Federico E. Puno told reporters in a briefing.
These include the La Union Electric Cooperative (Lueco) mini-hydro project with a minimum capacity of six megawatts (MW) and the Philex Mining Corp. 1-MW hydro project from the miner’s tailings pond in Tuba, Benguet.
Potential sites for the La Union project have already been identified and a letter of intent has since been submitted to the Energy department, a TeaM Energy hand out showed.
The firm is now collating documents to secure a service contract from the government and gauges have been installed to measure water levels in the area.
Site inspection, meanwhile, has already been conducted at the Philex tailings pond, with findings pointing to the need for “massive” modifications for the pond. The miner has reportedly “reiterated interest” in a partnership.

Federico E. Puno, TeaM Energy president and chief executive officer, said the company is keen on adding RE facilities, particularly mini-hydro projects, to its power generation portfolio.
Among the hydro projects TeaM Energy is considering is a six-megawatt generating facility at the Baroro River in La Union.
