MANILA, Philippines — The Ten Outstanding Public School Students (TOPS) in ceremonies held at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Academic excellence awardees are Freddie More Pablo (Sablayan National Comprehensive High School in Occidental Mindoro), Roma Jane Hechanova (Bacolod City National High School), Geila Mae delos Angeles (Gusa Regional High School in Cagayan de Oro City) and Ella May Maano (Muntinlupa High School).

Exemplary Leadership awardees are ZyJazz de Guzman (La Union High School), Fritzie Mae Faller (Talisay City Science High School), Janica Liz de Guzman (Davao City National High School), Dailyne Macasaet (Tala High School, Caloocan).

Charlie del Rosario of Pulong Buhangin High School in Bulacan and Kristin Hernan of Rosario National High School in La Union both garnered the Kabayan Special Achievement awards.

The students received certificates of distinction, medals and a cash prize of R20,000 each. They were also accepted as SM scholars and may enroll in any of their preferred courses in the Foundation’s partner universities nationwide. They will get free tuition, a monthly allowance and a chance to work at any SM Group offices during school breaks to augment their allowance.

The TOPS award was spearheaded by former Vice President Noli de Castro in 2006 in collaboration with the Department of Education, the Rotary Clubs of Makati West and Midtown Quezon City and Jobs DB.Com.

When I arrived, there were just a few hundred visitors in the area. I thought that this festival is going to be a flop due to low attendance, but hour by hour enormous number of visitors came in to the festival until in my estimate, the crowd population is at 20-40 thousand

MANILA, Philippines - Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Proceso J. Alcala has directed the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) to promote apiculture or beekeeping in the Philippines in coordination with the National Apiculture Research, Training and Development Institute (NARTDI).

“Apiculture, or honeybee production, is recognized in the country as an important agricultural activity providing income and livelihood to small farmers,” Alcala said.
Republic Act 9151 was passed creating the NARTDI under the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) in La Union.

Section 3 of RA 9151 defined the general power and functions of NARTDI and that these should be consistent with the research, extension and development programs of the Departments of Agriculture, Science and Technology (DoST), Environment and Natural Resource (DENR), the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) and DMMMSU.

During the Advisory Board Meeting on September 2, 2011, a resolution was passed requesting the inclusion of apiculture as one of the commodi¬ties for development of the DA.

State-owned Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) turned P3.54 billion to the treasury bureau as part of its share in the gaming agency’s earning in the first-three months of the year, surpassing its P2.54-billion remittance in the same period last year.

Currently, Pagcor operates 13 agency-run Casino Filipino facilities and has four licensed casinos – Fontana Casino in Pampanga, East Bay Casino in Rizal, Poro Point Casino in La Union and Fort Stotsenberg also in Pampanga.

In 2011, Pagcor remitted P11.437 billion to the government, higher by 4.5 percent compared with the Department of Finance’s (DOF) expected P10.94 billion contribution. Last year’s contribution to state coffers by Pagcor was also higher by 10.5 percent compared with 10.343 billion that the agency remitted in the previous year.

Thanks, nahiya naman ako sa signature ko lols actually puro ilocano ang lolo at lola ko, la union at pangasinan at sa Cagayan naman ang father ko, alam ko ilocano din sila dun..... pero sa pampanga nagkakilala parents ko at dun ako lumaki hahahaha.......

From Frankie Gonzales, who I have not seen for some 50 years sent me this letter: “Drove by Agoo, La Union today and was surprised that they are demolishing the Agoo Museum, the only building holding to the hundred years of the history of the town, the only building which once stood as monument of the Old Ilocanos .

“In its place will soon be a Mcdonald’s Restaurant. I see people march in Baguio to protect its trees. But I do not see any reactions from the people of Agoo. I am not a resident of Agoo but I cannot stomach the fact of the museum being demolished. Perhaps, you will feel the same and try to save it.”

Heck, if the people of Agoo don’t give a damn about their own history, why should this Ilokano from Bangued, Abra care? It saddens me that their own history is lost on those who are from Agoo; but what can we outsiders do? Perhaps, the family that started that private museum has given up. Or, the older ones who thought about putting up the museum have passed on.

sa Miss Agoo naman mas maluwang kasi yung grandstand sa DMMMSU SLUC kaya sigur doon gaganapin, kasi nga nung last March last year diba doon ginanap yung Grand Parade at Presentation of Ms. La Union, kaya siguro na pagtanto nila na mas OK doon

dati ginaganap ang Fiesta eh sa JDA, tapos nung narenovate yung Imelda Garden doon nilapit, Now sa DMMMSU na :)

CAMP DIEGO SILANG, La Union – The La Union Police Provincial Office, along with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), concluded a two-day training on seedling production and mainte-nance of forest trees, including indigenous and fruit trees, at the Conference Room of Camp Diego Silang, Carlatan, San Fernando City, La Union.

The seminar was in line with the memorandum of agreement between the DENR and PNP in support of the National Greening Program of the Aquino administration. It was part of the legacy project of the PNP, dubbed “Pulis Makakalikasan: 10 Milyong Puno, Pamana sa Kinabukasan.”

Under the Memorandum of Agreement, the DENR provides seedlings for the tree- planting activities of the PNP. The PNP here is experiencing lack of seedlings as they were already used for this year’s activities, according to Chief Inspector Marlon D. Paiste, PNP Information Officer.

Pindangan Festival shines in streetdance competition

Colorful, lively and outstanding. That’s how the audience described the performance of the Pindangan Festival streetdance performers of San Fernando City, La Union, champion in the recently concluded Agoo Dinengdeng Festival of Festivals Invitational Streetdance Competition held last May 1, 2012 at the DMMMSU-SLUC Grandstand in line with the celebration of 8th Agoo Dinengdeng Festival.

Pindagan Festival brought home a hefty P150,000.00 cash prize while Daing Festival of Sto. Tomas, La Union and Bangus Festival of Dagupan City garnered 2nd and 3rd place received P100,000.00 and P75,000.00, respectively. Consolation prizes of P20,000.00 each were given to non-winners. A plaque of participation for the head of delegation and a certificate of recognition to the coordinator and choreographer were also awarded to the participating municipalities/cities.

Brainchild of Rep. Franny Eriguel, M.D. and Mayor Sandra Y. Eriguel, M.D., the first ever and one-of-a-kind event in the province was participated by 17 towns/cities within La Union and Pangasinan. Each entry represented its own festival identity and depicted their fine cultures and traditions. Said competition was comprised of two parts, mobile presentation during the grand civic parade and a focal presentation.

Showed a remarkable exhibition, guest performer in the affair is the Water Lily Festival from Las Piñas City courtesy of former Congresswoman Cynthia Villar.

Spectators in the jampacked Marcos Sports Complex were amazed by the impressive performances of the participants and enjoyed the distinct competition.

ABONO Party List Representative, Franciso Emmanuel R. Ortega III graced the said occasion being the Guest of Honor and Speaker. Guests who were also present include Governor Manuel C. Ortega, LUVWI President Geraldine R. Ortega, Vice Governor Aureo Q. Nisce, BM Henry Balbin, BM Rudy Rivera, BM Roberto Madarang, BM Jun Rillera, mayors and vice-mayors from the different towns of 2nd District.
