LUNGSOD NG SAN FERNANDO, La Union, Mayo 2 (PIA) -- Sa ginanap na “Baggak Festival” kamakailan sa bayan ng Bauang sa probinsiya, tampok ang ikaapat na pagsasagawa ng jobs fair rito bilang parte ng selebrasyon.

Ayon kay Marvin Sandaga Subala, Public Employment Service Office (PESO) Manager ng naturang bayan, sila’y nakapagtala ng umaabot sa 324 aplikante.

Ang mga ito ay college graduate, college level, undergraduate at high school graduate.

Aniya, mayroong 15 employers o amo kabilang sa lokal ang siyang nag-alok ng trabaho nitong Abril 24 habang sa overseas naman ay 13 na amo.

Ito’y kinabibilangan ng Avon, Sitel, BHF, Marand Resort and Spa, Pangasinan Employment Agency, Adessa, Greenworld, Starworld at iba pa.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, May 4 (PIA) -- The Poro Point Management Corporation (PPMC) inked on Saturday, April 28, a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to repair and rehabilitate the Poro Point’s iconic lighthouse and ensure economic and tourism development where the lighthouse stands in the Poro Point Freeport Zone (PPFZ).

The MOA allows the PPMC to make vital development efforts of the Poro Point Lighthouse which is part of the PCG’s ‘Adopt-a-Lighthouse’ program that encourages third party participation in the preservation and maintenance of culturally valuable lighthouses in the country.

The agreement stated that PPMC will not only make necessary repairs and rehabilitation of the said lighthouse, but rather, it has to prepare a program of work for the project, and also rehabilitate the shotgun house used by the keeper of the lighthouse turning it into a museum. As planned, the works should be completed in time for the next ‘Sillag Festival’ in 2013.

MANILA, Philippines - State-run Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) is set to privatize a former US military airbase in Northern Luzon, with a plan to build a shopping mall complex early next year.

On the sidelines of the 45th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank Board of Governors, Arnel Paciano Casanova, BCDA president and chief executive told reporters that funding from the PPP Center would finance the feasibility study for the San Fernando Airport - previously called the Wallace airbase - in La Union.

"Our vision is to make it viable for a PPP project. Our plan is to transform the airport into an airport mall just like in Changi Airport in Singapore. The terminal is actually a mall itself, you generate revenues from the mall operations aside from the revenue you get from traffic revenue," Casanova said.

Classified as a community airport, the San Fernando Airport is part of the Poro Point Freeport Zone.

Casanova said no airline serves the airport in the absence of passenger traffic.

Once developed, the airport would serve domestic and regional flights, he said.

4. Highest percentage decrease in the poverty rate in the region, from 43% in 2000 to 21% in 2006
5. La Union residents has the 2nd highest per capita income in Region 1, while 14th in the entire country

moreover, still in 2006
- Despite the El Niño, La Union tops agriculture output at P600 million, considering that it is the smallest province in the region
- La Union is the investment hub of the region (thanks to Thunderbird's multi-billion investment at Poro point, amount of investment palang ng Thunderbird ay taob ang combined amount of investments sa ibang provinces)
- La Union is the Most Peaceful Province in the entire Philippines

Siguro dhil narin iyon sa economic activities sa clark at subic ecozones as major gateways at investment hubs sa north of manila. Ang tpluex naman will be the link to the agro-industrial north luzon sa the rest ng economic centers sa Luzon


Naku matagal ang 5hrs na byahe na iyan from pampanga to la union(bauang) i assume daytime travel time iyan.pag gawa na ang tpluex,siguro 2.5 hrs nalang ang pampanga (clark) to san fernando la union

Based from the photos of Vivo City near Changi airport in Singapore, I bet na Ayala mall ang may kakayahang mag-design ng katulad nito. If I were BCDA and Ayala comes in to be the mall developer then no more 2nd thoughts hehehehe
i was in singapore when vivo city opened back in christmas 2006. i like its unique exterior and interior curve design. the mall is NOT near changi airport but near the seaport container terminal and gate bridge going to sentosa island where the universal studios is now located.

tapos yung 2 floors niya,gawing venue nalang ng mga trade fairs and exhibits with open space din,para hindi na sa harapan ng city hall gawin ang mga iyon,para nman ma-minimize ang traffic kapag may fiesta o mga trade fair events at para madagdagan din ang foot traffic sa trade center dahil wala namang pumupunta doon.what do you think?

sana nga ayala ang magdevelop ng mall sa airport :D for sure magiging sosyal at world class na city ang san fernando. i-promote din ang san fernando as tourist destination lalo na sa mga mayayaman na may private planes/helicopters/jets para naman may additional market ang pinaplanong mall rito

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, May 7 (PIA) -- To showcase traditional recipes of the region, a Regional Recipe Development Contest was recently spearheaded in the City of San Fernando.

The contest is part of this year’s kick off activity for the Nutrition Month celebration with the theme, “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain” hosted by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Ilocos Region.

According to NNC Region 1, only six were identified for the cooking contest proper out of the 24 recipe entries submitted to the regional office from all the sectors in region 1.

These recipes include Kangkong Linambonan of Tagudin town; Kangkong at Talong sa Bagoong Alamang of Batac City; Saluyot Burger of Department of Health- Center for Health Development I, San Fernando City; Bola-bolang Kalabasa at Alugbati, a perennial vine found in the tropics where it is widely used as a leaf vegetable with Malunggay Sauce of the city of San Fernando; Tortang Pinakbet of Urdaneta City and Vegetable Lumpia con Peanut of Laoag City.

Oo sana i-update narin nila ang mapa ng mga municiplities.gayahin nila ang ginawa ng san fernando na maps na makikita doon sa website nila.aside from road map,may land use map din at iba pang maps

SAN FERNANDO CITY—While going up the steps of the Poro Point lighthouse, former Mayor Mary Jane Ortega of San Fernando City in La Union was loudly saying, “Oro. Plata. Mata.” (Gold. Silver. Death.). It is an old Spanish superstition that if one’s last step falls on either gold, silver or death, it will mean the fate of the house or its occupants.
Having negotiated 96 steps, Ortega was aghast that it ended at “mata.”
“So the first step of the rehabilitation is to put an extra step,” she said while atop the 76-foot lighthouse built in 1970.
Poro Point Management Corp. (PPMC) signed a memorandum of agreement with the Philippine Coast Guard to repair and rehabilitate the lighthouse as well as the much older Spanish lighthouse a few meters away.
Ortega said the older lighthouse, built on Nov. 28, 1885, and enshrined by the National Historical Institute as a historical structure, would be rebuilt using old drawings.
PPMC, a subsidiary of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), promised to finish the rehabilitation by next year.
Florante Gerdan, PPMC president and chief executive officer, said preserving the lighthouse would be the first step in promoting tourism in the area.
“Preserving our heritage sites would contribute to the increase in tourist arrivals and eventually in the rise in investments as well as business opportunities for local entrepreneurs,” Gerdan said.
Vice Admiral Edmund Castor Tan, Philippine Coast Guard commandant, said the Poro Point lighthouse is one of 10 lighthouses in the country that are being scheduled for repair and rehabilitation under the public-private partnership (PPP) program.
For a lighthouse to be included in the PPP, it should be historically and strategically important, Tan said. He said the 120-foot Spanish lighthouse, which is lit by a huge kerosene lamp, is one of the oldest in the country.
Arnel Paciano Casanova, BCDA president, said they intend to improve the six-hectare area around the lighthouse and build curio and sport shops there.
Initial designs showed that PPMC would create rings around the lighthouse but these would not interfere in the real duty of the lighthouse which is to guide boats and ships in the area.
Benjamin Fajardo, who has been supervising the Poro Point lighthouse in the past 12 years, said the structure is lit by an array of solar-powered cells at its apex. Its beacon can be seen as far as 10 nautical miles (18.5 kilometers) away. The light, he said, automatically turns on at 6:45 p.m.
Casanova said the rehabilitation of the area would center on the lighthouses. “Lighthouses are part of our character as a nation, being an archipelago where the sea and its shores are a daily part of the Filipino life,” he said.

Fireworks at the very first, "Sillag," Festival of Lights held at Poro Point, San Fernando, La Union. Sillag is an Ilocano word which means moonbeam or illumination from the moon. The festival, initiated by the Poro Point Management Corporation (PPMC), a subsidiary of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) is intended to promote the 6-hectare lighthouse property as a vital component of an Integrated Tourism Complex.

The government is hoping that House Bill 5727, which seeks to reform the excise tax system, will be enacted into law within the year after the passage of the bill at the House committee level yesterday.

The amended version of HB 5727 authored by Cavite Rep. Joseph Emilio Abaya got 46 votes while 14 lawmakers, mostly belonging to the Northern Luzon Alliance (NLA) bloc, opposed it, claiming the bill was railroaded.

Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said that the amended version of the bill is the best way forward to address the concerns of those affected.

La Union Rep. Victor Ortega, president of the NLA, has said the bill is considered by many congressmen as “prejudicial to the interest of our constituents and the tobacco industry.”

NLA said the bill would displace tobacco farmers and distillery workers in the region, especially since their imported counterparts will be paying smaller taxes than them.

Based on the new system, a tax rate for 750 ml distilled spirit with P90 net retail price (NRP) will have a tax rate of P25.

If the price is from P90 to P150, the tax collected will be P80 and if it is above P150, it will be P320.

BARANGAY Poro, La Union -- Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of the Caltex leading brand of fuels and lubricants, held a medical mission at the Barangay Poro Sports Complex, San Fernando, La Union.

The mission was conducted in partnership with the Manila Doctors Hospital and Barangay Poro. Chevron employees from the local depot, volunteer doctors, nurses, and pharmacists from the Manila Doctors Hospital, barangay officials and Youth Council members were all instrumental in making the event a success.
