As of June 2011 pa iyon. baka may bagong mga bangko uli doon pati rin sa San Fernando. Nagbukas ang City Savers Bank noong March which I think is a very stable bank.

The country’s top two property developers, SM Group and Robinson Land are expanding their portfolio of IT buildings in information technology zones and commercial establishments.

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority said of the P6.37 billion economic zones approved for the first five months of the year, the two companies account for one-third of the total.

Meantime, of the P6 billion ecozones, Cebu would also host a P2.219-billion tourism ecozone called the Puerto Rosario de Cordova. Another IT manufacturing zone meanwhile will be built in a 30-hectare area San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

Two agro-industrial ecozones have also been approved: the P450-million Floridablanca Agro-Industrial Zone in Pampanga, 110 hectares and the P426-million Unistar in a 15-hectare area in Agoo, La Union.

At the end of 2011, PEZA had 257 PEZA operating ecozones and 2,600 operating locator enterprises, all export-oriented. The ecozones include three government-owned ones located in Cebu, Cavite and Baguio.

siguro mas maganda na lang kung tanggalin nila yung island diyan tapos, lagyan nila ng stop light, at saka lagyan nila ng left turn lane papuntang CSI yung south bound lane. o kaya lagyan nila ng stop sign at i set nila yung 3-second stop. sa olongapo, 5-second yata dun.. then put up a red light cameras or traffic cameras in this area. at kung sino man ang nag break ng traffic rules, pagmumultahin once that person renew his license or his "franchise" from the local LTO office.

I do agree on that.

malabo iyan.

pwede namang idemolish yung sidewalk sa DMMMSu at ilipat nalang inside the campus

Sana lang talaga i-widen na ang national highway sa San Fernando, or if not, make additional roads that will serve as alternate route whenever may traffic build-up

THE THREE-STORY Athena, which is near the golf course and the hotel's main lobby, in all its five-star amenities.

Athena, Chloe, Selene, Alexa and Aphrodite may surely sound Greek, but they all look good enough for guests to go on a five-hour road trip from Manila, or go down from the cool mountain breezes of Baguio to this humid province in Northern Luzon.

The destination is the luxurious Thunderbird Resorts in Poro Point, La Union, where the payback for a long trip and a hot day is a breathtaking view of the West Philippine Sea and the five-star amenities of the resort hotel, where villas with Greek names have been permanent fixtures since the Thunderbird Residences’ launch in October 2010. Thunderbird Resorts property is Santorini-inspired due to its proximity to the cliffside.

The villas are actually lifestyle beach homes dotting the 65-hectare resort-cum-golf course-cum-casino. Specifically created for vacationing families who want to rent them out or buy them, Thunderbird Residences is situated within the vicinity of the Thunderbird Resorts Hotel, an all-weather golf course, and a beach club. Soon, an expanded area will be the location of a P200-million condotel.

Livable model unit

http://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/h/business.inquirer.net/files/2012/06/600x399xthunder2.jpg.pagespeed.ic.hOWjTvCT5F.jpg

One of the beach homes—actually a livable model unit—is named Athena, which is a prominent structure when viewed from the hotel’s main lobby. There have been two Athena model units built, in fact.

Currently, there are 10 villas being built, but only two (including Athena) are enrolled to the Thunderbird rental program. Katalene Ross Agmata, corporate communications manager of Thunderbird Resorts and Residences, explained that each unit owner has the option to rent out or own in full the unit they would occupy.

Should the homeowners opt to manage their home privately, it becomes a private venture. The owners of the lots are also entitled to free playing rights to the Cliffs Golf and Beach club. Aside from Athena, four more designs—Chloe, Selene, Alexa and Aphrodite—have been approved by Thunderbird.

The 80 lots launched for the Thunderbird Residences are all situated within 15 hectares of each other, to ensure that the property maintains visual space and ambiance. “We have also committed to a three-hectare park and recreation area which will be devoted to wellness and the retirement lifestyle,” she told Inquirer Property.

The 80 lots for sale is now 75 percent sold. Agmata said that each property owner is required to follow certain setback allowances ranging between 2.5 and 5 meters. Aside from this, the planned three-hectare community park would offer lots of open spaces.

P25,000 a day

The three-bedroom Athena, which has a floor area of 310 square meter, was built at a cost of approximately P9 million. Fully furnished, Athena is being offered for P13.5 million. The minimum downpayment is 30 percent, with the balance to be paid in five years, with applicable interest rates.

http://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/h/business.inquirer.net/files/2012/06/600x399xthunder4.jpg.pagespeed.ic.UvqFXMMPKG.jpg
A TYPICAL bedroom of Athena.

With the same Mediterranean lines as the hotel, the Athena Villa has five-star amenities, and promises quick and efficient residential services. Guests can experience the Athena Villa living experience for P25,000 per day. This includes a breakfast buffet for six persons, plus access to all the resort amenities and leisure living, while at the same time soaking in the seaside atmosphere.

Agmata said most Thunderbird visitors come from Manila (80 percent) and Baguio, but there are also foreign visitors.

“To our surprise, casino players have not played an important role on the lot sales. Most of the sales have come from hotel guests and walk-ins,” she disclosed.

P200-M condotel

http://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/h/business.inquirer.net/files/2012/06/600x399xthunder5.jpg.pagespeed.ic.F9TzS6SOXt.jpg
ATHENA’S staircase winds all the way up to the bedrooms and attic

Agmata added that Thunderbird Resorts has been “regionally strong” in advertising and marketing the lots, and future condotel projects.

Thunderbird Resorts has also announced an additional P200-million investment aimed at constructing the condotel. The condotel project is expected to start this year. It is a response to address the need for more rooms in the hotels, which now has an 80-percent occupancy rate. The project effectively adds an additional 51 rooms, each offering a breathtaking view of the West Philippine Sea.

Clients who purchase a condotel unit will also have the option to enroll their units to the rental program, enabling them to enjoy significant returns on the rentals. Within this program, owners turn over their units to Thunderbird. The unit will then be managed as a hotel room.

La Union can be exceedingly warm and humid during summer, and be directly in the line of storms during the rainy season. Currently, there are plans for additional air-con units for the spacious Athena model to address the heat. Asked if the designers of Thunderbird Resort were familiar with the weather condition in Poro Point during the early years of construction, or if there had been any issue on weather, wind and storm, Agmata said this was the reason it took 18 months to build the resort.

BAGUIO CITY — Mark John Lexer Galedo moved closer to winning the Ronda Pilipinas yesterday even as Bicol pride Irish Valenzuela won the shortened individual time trial 13th stage with an amazing display of mountain-climbing skills.

The riders’ heroics got competition for the day’s news, however, from a scuffle involving a media personnel and a V-Mobile team coach.

Galedo is almost certain of winning the title as the last two stages are on flat, well-paved road, with only a freak accident or a major mechanical trouble could deny the 26-year-old Caloocan native from taking his second plum since ruling the 2009 Tour of Luzon.

The 14th stage is a 134-kilometer run from San Fernando, La Union to Tarlac City, while the final stage is a 90-kilometer criterium race from Valenzuela to Manila.

MANILA, Philippines – Roadbike Phils.’ Mark Galedo is now just a race away from clinching the overall individual title by launching a calculated run in the penultimate leg of the Ronda Pilipinas won by Army-RC Cola Alfie Catalan in another massed finish in front of the Tarlac provincial capital.

The 26-year-old Galedo stuck to his closest pursuer, American Vinyl-LPGMA’S Irish Valenzuela, in the virtually trouble-free 134.4-kilometer trip from the coastal city of San Fernando, La Union to retain his 33-second overnight lead at the end of Stage 14.
Both riders checked in with the 22-man third group with identical times of three hours, three minutes and six seconds, three seconds behind the five-man lead group.

Catalan made his move in the last 200 meters in copping the leg, foiling the bid of hometown bet Elmo Ramos to win in front of his hometown fans as the Tarlac City bet was second.

Both had identical times of 3:03.03.

Anybody heard anything about the new mall they keep talking about building in San Fernando or Bauang (Robinsons or SM)?

these have been rumors for sooooo long.

Among these are the latest rumors/news

1. Robinsons has recently acquired the wide, vacant lot beside San Agustin Elementary school near Poro Point.

2. A forumer from Manila said that SM is to put up their mall in Poro Point by 2015

3. SM Savemore has been looking for an unoccupied building or a space enough for a grocery store in San Fernando

I know that the people of La Union are so tired of rumors, but let us patiently wait for some developments

SAN FERNANDO CITY—La Union Governor Manuel Ortega said health cards have been distributed to at least 27,408 indigent families in the province.

He told Dr. Domingo Banzon, Philippine Health Insurance Corp. president, said the beneficiaries were screened from residents in first and second districts.

“We want to improve the health condition of our indigent constituents, especially those living in far flung communities,” Ortega told Manila Standard, adding that capitol is committed to allocate more funds for the universal health care program.

In a major effort to push tourism and lure more businesses to Poro Point, La Union, the Poro Point Management Corporation (PPMC) launched last April the Sillag Festival of Lights, from here on to be celebrated every year, and has taken charge as well of repairing and rehabilitating Poro Point’s iconic Lighthouse, which is set to become the center of tourism activity in the area.

Sillag (Ilocano for moonbeam) the Poro Point Festival of Lights,
will be La Union’s yearly summer festival. It is intended to promote the six hectare-lighthouse property as a vital component of an Integrated To u r i s m C o m p l e x . S i l l a g w a s launched last April 28, with activities that highlighted the province’s rich history and tourist destinations. Next year, it will be scheduled proximate to the Panagbenga Festival of Baguio and Hot Air Balloon Festival of Clark, Pampanga to synergize and complement with the other economic zones under the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) group.

According to BCDA President and CEO Arnel Casanova, “This is
part of BCDA's endeavors to change the landscape of Central and North Luzon...We will see business and employment opportunities that will eventually translate to the upliftment of the lives of our countrymen.“

BCDA Chairman Felicito Payumo added, “The holding of Sillag in Poro Point will play a major role, not only in drawing tourists, but also in promoting the Poro Point Freeport Zone (PPFZ) with its seaport and airport as the country's magnet for investments and wealth generator in the North.“

This was seconded by PPMC Chairman Ives Nisce, who said, “Through Sillag, PPMC aims to attract domestic and foreign tourists to encourage business and commerce in the PPFZ, in San Fernando City and the rest of La Union.“

Very seldom or none at all sila kung mag-sale kaya langaw lahat malls nila.

PPMC and BCDA launch an annual festival in La Union and commit to repairing the Poro Point Lighthouse to boost tourism and business in the area

MANILA, Philippines --- In a major effort to push tourism and lure more businesses to Poro Point, La Union, the Poro Point Management Corporation (PPMC) launched last April the Sillag Festival of Lights, from here on to be celebrated every year, and has taken charge as well of repairing and rehabilitating Poro Point’s iconic Lighthouse, which is set to become the center of tourism activity in the area.

Lighthouse Rehab

The Poro Point Lighthouse to be rehabilitated was erected in the 1970s, and is one of the oldest yet still functional lighthouses in the country. It is solar-powered and its lights can reach as far as 10 nautical miles. Its apex allows a clear view of the surrounding panoramic landscapes and seascapes of La Union.

Aside from the lighthouse, the PPMC will also rehabilitate the shotgun house used by the keeper of the lighthouse, and will turn it into a museum. The entire project is expected to be completed in time for the next Sillag in 2013.

Casanova said the adoption of the lighthouse is part of the BCDA group’s efforts to preserve the country’s national heritage while pursuing development in the regions. He said that while BCDA seeks to develop economic hubs that bring employment to thousands of Filipinos, “We also seek to enhance the Filipino’s character and sense of history.”

Nisce said that the rehabilitation of the lighthouse is but a first step in future efforts to highlight the province of La Union as a tourism and investment area. “We are confident other groups will follow our lead and replicate our rehabilitation and development efforts in their side of La Union,” he said.

PPMC President Florante Gerdan added, “We hope that other entities from the private sector will emulate our efforts to preserve history while promoting tourism. Preserving our heritage sites would contribute to increase in tourist arrivals, and eventually increase in investments as well as business opportunities for local entrepreneurs.”

Thunderbird Resorts Poro Point (TRPP) was a major sponsor of the Sillag Festival of Lights, playing host and venue to its key activities last April. The Thunderbird Boardwalk was the venue of the Lantern Fluvial Parade, performance by the Philippine Marine Band, releasing of the Hope Lanterns, rock concert and Pyromusical Show last April 28.

The following day marked the groundbreaking ceremony of TRPP’s three-storey Thunderbird Condotel. Thunderbird is set to build 51 additional rooms in the Condotel, to add to the existing 41 rooms at TRPP, with a total investmentof R200 million for the expansion project. To date, TRPP has pumped in a total of R1.2-B investments in the country since it started five years ago.

Clients who will purchase a condotel unit will have the opportunity to enroll their units to the rental program, which will enable them to enjoy while earning significant returns on the rentals.Within this program, owners turn over their unit to Thunderbird so that Thunderbird can manage the unit as a hotel room and allow owners to relax while earning.

The April 29 groundbreaking had the following key officials (see photo) in attendance: (from left) Wilson Tieng, corporate partner of Thunderbird Resorts; Felicito Payumo, BCDA chairman; Fausto Liriano, TRPP operations director for construction; David Chong, TRPP project manager for real estate; Shaun Thomsen, Thunderbird Resorts chief gaming officer; Arnel Casanova, BCDA president and CEO; Florante Gerdan, PPMC president and CEO; and Yves Remondeulaz, TRPP hotel general manager.

Meanwhile, Thunderbird Residences continues to expand, with the plan to build approximately 140 more villas or lifestyle beach homes in six to 10 years.Thunderbird Residences was launched last October 2010, and occupies 15 hectares within the total 65 hectare property of TRPP. Thunderbird Residences launched only 80 lots for sale and is currently 75 percent sold. The owners of the lots are also entitled to free playing rights to the Cliffs Golf and Beach Club. A Thunderbird residence is the perfect vacation or retirement place, as included in its expansion plans is a three-hectare park and wellness area, and a commercial area.

Other ongoing TRPP projects include the expansion of the Casino, whereby 1,100 square meters more of floor space is being added to accommodate more machines and gaming tables, a bigger entertainment area and bar, another kitchen, and to which the VIP rooms will be relocated; and the continued expansion of the resort’s all-weather golf course.

@Hugo Le Roi if you ask around, (the street food vendors in the area) they will tell you construction was stopped because the contractors failed to meet their deadline. Yeah right!
This issue has brought bad things to a few members of this page, that's why we're letting it die.
No deadline or budget WOULD stop this project's completion. It alone has been highly profiled to allow it to fail. Here's a clue. One of the things that can stop a unit of the government from continuing is a temporary restraining order.

hmmm some members of the page are so afraid to talk about this baka daw matanggal sila sa trabaho or what. (may pulitiko kayang involved sa page?)

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, June 11 (PNA) — At least 26,408 families in La Union had been granted with health insurance cards in line with the continuing implementation of the universal health care program by the provincial government.

Governor Manuel Ortega announced this during a short visit of Eduardo Banzon, president and Chief Executive Officer of Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) at the provincial capitol here last week.

Banzon commended Ortega for his “seriousness in supporting the universal health care program benefiting the poor families in the province.”

Oo pala. I used to be around San Juan for the past week.

Summer’s Last Hurrah – Ku IkaIKa La Union Marathon 2012 – A Review
Words by: Ms_Mars
Photos: Ms_Mars, Team USB

It rained 15 minutes after I arrived in the city of San Fernando, La Union for the Ku IkaIka Marathon held May 19, 2012 and travelling all the way from Manila for 7 hours via Partas Bus. And the very same rain made me miss my host’s rep (from Organizer IRunners) at our rendezvous point at the plaza. After the brief downpour, more runners from Benguet, Pangasinan, Ilocos Sur and Manila among others filled up the city’s transient and backpacker inns. Carbo-loaded at Kaw Bin’s Chinese resto (kudos to their affordable pancit bihon!) and had chance encounter with some runners before heading out to Kahuna Resort to check out the onsite registration and claim my race bib. Met up with more Manila runner friends at the lobby, chatted about the trip and had some photo ops while relaxing.

http://www.pinoyfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/la-union-marathon-2012-9.jpg

After a series of emails and text messages, I finally met brothers Stan and Randy Abasolo of IRunners Community, the very hardworking brother-tandem responsible for this follow up run event this time in coastal San Juan where it highlighted Kahuna Resort & Spa’s breathtaking view of the open sea. The same group held the 1st Annual LUUM Half Marathon Tourism Run in San Fernando last February 25, 2012. Both were apologetic that they were so busy with the onsite reg and we hardly had time to chat about the marathon. After finally settling in, I was excited and contented to be running only 10K the following day and enjoy the farm fields, mountain sceneries and experience the hospitality of San Juan, La Union folks.

“Ku IkaiKa” is a Polynesian phrase chosen to aptly describe the whole marathon, which literally translates to “Stand Strong”.

Two weekends ago, we went on a summer getaway with fellow officemates to La Union. What started with only surfing in mind in the waves of San Juan, turned out to be a roadtrip and lots of sight-seeing along the way. Renting a van, we were able to afford to drop by as we wanted to.

The beauty of having your own ride.

DIEGO SILANG

Perhaps he was the greatest Ilocano revolutionary leader during the Spanish colonization.
Diego Silang y Andaya was born in Aringay, Pangasinan (now an area in Aringay/Caba, La Union) on December 16, 1730. He was a messenger of a Spanish priest in Vigan, Ilocos Sur and travelled to Manila from Ilocos in line of his work. During these travels that he saw the many colonial injustices and these lead him for rebellion. He then wanted to end these abuses and to overthrow the Spanish government in Ilocos and establish an independent Ilocos nation. When the British came and captured Manila from the Spanish, he conspired with them by offering his help to lead Ilocano forces against the Spanish in the North. In turn he was appointed as governor of Ilocos in their place and promised him military reinforcement. He lead the attack of Vigan and imprisoned the priests when they resisted his demand to leave Ilocos and transfer the government to Ilocano natives. He victored many more battles over Ilocos.

But Ilocos was not freed as he wanted under his leadership because he was killed on May 28, 1763, by an Spanish-Ilocano mestizo, Miguel Vicos, who was one of his friends.
After his death, the revolt was continued by his wife Gabriela.

Diego Silang - an Ilocano pride. His shown bravery and patriotism is an inspiration to every Filipino.

Even when she was a young girl, Maria Delilah Turzar, 40, had always been fascinated by the framed, faded magazine article displayed on the wall of her grandmother’s house in San Fernando City in La Union.

The Philippines Free Press article, written in 1957 by Primitivo Milan, was titled, “The First Filipino Awardee of the US Congressional Medal of Honor,” and talks about Turzar’s great grandfather, Private Jose Nisperos, of the 34th Company of the Philippine Scouts.

Nisperos was the first Filipino and Asian to receive the medal, the highest US military honor.

“I kept on reading the story about Lolo Jose and wondered where the medal was,” Turzar said.

Sana inopen nalang yung shoulder for traffic

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — Classes in all pre-schools and elementary and high schools were suspended Tuesday in La Union due to continuous heavy rains caused by the southwest monsoon.

This was confirmed by Dr. Dominga Lim, the administrative officer of the Department of Education (DepEd) in the Division of La Union.

According to Lim, the suspended classes will be offset through the holding of make-up classes during Saturdays.

Meanwhile, Director Melchito Castro of the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) in Region 1 advised all residents in Ilocos provinces to be vigilant amid heavy rains as this might cause flooding and landslides.

He warns all fishermen living along the coastal areas in the region Classes Suspended Amid Heavy Rainsto avoid fishing at this time due to the presence of big waves, which might trigger accidents.

Phinma-led Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corp. expects to complete within the third quarter this year the transfer of its 21-megawatt bunker fuel-fired power plant to La Union.

This facility, managed by the company’s wholly owned subsidiary, CIP II Power Corp., was earlier targeted to start operating by January 2012 but the start was delayed by bad weather.

Groundbreaking started in April of last year and by July 2011, all major equipment and structures were transferred from Laguna to its new site in Bacnotan, La Union, adjacent to the Holcim cement plant. Erection and installation works are still ongoing.

The source said that once operational, CIP II Power’s facility will operate as a merchant plant that will not only sell power to the wholesale electricity spot market (WESM), but also supply emergency power to Holcim.

This power plant will likewise serve the power requirements of Quezon II and Sorsogon I electric cooperatives.

The missing medal for valor of the late Corporal Jose Baliton Nisperos, the first Asian and Filipino to receive the United States Congressional Medal of Honor, was formally returned to his heirs yesterday here.

“We’re very happy, very grateful, not only our family, not only his (Nisperos) heirs, but the whole country as well. We are very proud because he is an Ilocano. The search is over for the missing medal,” said Ma. Delilah Viduya Turzar, Nisperos’ great granddaughter.

Turzar said the Philippine Scouts Heritage Society advised her to donate the medal to a museum so that it will be preserved and secured.

“We will donate it to the city government of San Fernando because they will be putting up a World War II museum. It will be secured and the public can view it,” Turzar said during an interview together with Mayor Pablo Ortega at the People’s Hall here.

Ortega said that while the city government is preparing the museum, the medal will be temporarily kept secured inside a glass box at the city hall for public viewing.

CLARK FREEPORT—The family of a war hero, a member of the then Philippine Scouts under the US Army, has renewed its appeal for help in recovering the US Congressional Medal of Honor awarded to their ancestor 99 years ago.

A relative took the medal in the 1920s and was reported to have sold it at an auction last year.

Maria Delilah Turzar, a great granddaughter of Private Jose Baliton Nisperos, said the family’s appeal was directed at the winning bidder who paid $1,100 (P47,300 today at 43:1) for the medal.

But the provincial government of La Union, where Nisperos was from, decided to honor one of its own by exhuming his remains that had been buried in the province and accorded him military honors in a reburial last April 2 in a public cemetery meant for its great sons and daughters.

Turzar said the La Union government also promised to buy back the medal for the Nisperos family and for its historical value.

BACNOTAN, La Union—For this tobacco-producing province, promoting a healthier image does not stop at just banning smoking in casinos and public areas. It goes as far as adopting a healthier lifestyle and finding an alternative livelihood in honey production. According to provincial agriculturist Imelda Sannadan, beekeeping has always been a backyard industry in La Union but it has not really been taken advantage of. This is because the tobacco industry had provided a good livelihood for the farmers until the global campaign against smoking reduced demand for tobacco leaves. To give farmers an alternative livelihood, Sannadan says the La Union government started promoting apiculture development in 2000, when Republic Act 9151 was passed. The law created the National Apiculture Research Training and Development Institute (Nartdi) at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University here. The La Union Honeybee Center started full operations in September last year to make the province the “honeybee capital of the north.” “The center serves as a facility for processing raw honey, as well as an equipment store for those who want to start beekeeping,” says Vissia Jadraque, honey equipment operator at the center.

June 14, 2012, 5:53pm

AT the celebration of the 114th anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence in San Fernando, La Union, Mayor Pablo C. Ortega had a public display of the US Congressional Medal of Honor of WW II veteran Pvt. José Nisperos, said to be the first Filipino awardee.

The medal has a history of “missing in action” for years before it finally returned to the family… thanks to the patient sleuthing of Maria Deliah Turzar, one of the hero’s grandchildren.

It involved the Good, the Bad, and possibly the Ugly.

The Good – The collector, who asked not to be named. He had bought Nisperos’ medal at an auction of the Philippine Numismatic and Antiquarian Society in 2010, and on learning of the family’s search and appeal, turned it over to Mayor Ortega on June 7. He asked nothing for the return of the medal.

The Bad – The con men who sweet-talked Nisperos’ widow Potenciana to lend the medal to them on the promise that they would work for the $55 monthly pension benefit… and never returned it.

The Ugly – The widow Potenciana received nothing of the promised pension, and had to work as market vendor to support her three daughters Gia, Leonila, and Concepcion. It would be Ugly if the US Veterans Office doesn’t right the wrong.

Jose Nisperos? :bash: WWII started in 1939 in Europe, WWII started in 1941 in the Philippines. Now here comes Ambassador Zaide writing about Prvt. Nisperos as a WWII veteran, (Prvt. Nisperos died in early 1920s).

Parang yung journalist ng Inquirer na si Maila Ager na sinabing nag graduate si Fidel Ramos sa West Point University in Virginia, instead of U.S. Military Academy in Westpoint, New York.

sabi ng professor ko dati ng Photo-Journalism, "make sure that your article has 100% veracity, because if not, the people who know or knew about your story will not respect you as a journalist."

many article writers are like that. For example, an SM will be built in San Fernando. Some writers referred the San Fernando to be in La Union which was supposedly that in Pampanga. Sometime they do not verify from the source, they just write and write and write

Communities that host mining operations should be the first to benefit from the economic gains generated by the mining industry, Vice President Jejomar Binay said.

Mining goes beyond economic considerations. It is above all, a social justice issue. Communities that host mining operations should be granted opportunities like education, health care, clean water, and power as a bare minimum, Binay said in a speech at the Philippine Society of Mining Engineers’ Convention in Davao City.

He also cited mining’s vast economic potential, saying that the Philippines has about 9 million hectares of potential mining land with only 1.4 million hectares being covered by mining permits.

Mines bureau director Leo Jasareno told the Philippine mining forum at Shangri_La Hotel in Makati City that the industry is hurting from anti-mining sentiment and even local government units have begun passing ordinances that limit if not totally ban the conduct of mining in the provinces.

Those that have passed laws considered as anti-mining include Romblon, Antique, Zamboanga Sibubay, Bohol, Zamboanga del Norte, Samar, Marinduque, South Cotabato, Bukidnon, La Union, Negros Occidental and Capiz.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Philippines – The missing medal of the late Corporal Jose Baliton Nisperos, the first Asian and Filipino to receive the United States Congressional Medal of Honor, was formally returned to his heirs here Thursday.

“We’re very happy, very grateful, not only our family, not only his (Nisperos) heirs, but the whole country as well. We are very proud because he is an Ilocano. The search is over for the missing medal,” declared Ma. Delilah Viduya Turzar, Nisperos’ great granddaughter.

Turzar said the Philippine Scouts Heritage Society advised her to donate the medal to a museum so that it will be preserved and secured.

Mayor Pablo Ortega said the city government is preparing the museum. He said the medal would be temporarily kept secured inside a glass box at the city hall for public viewing.

“The city government will take care of it and will be kept in a museum to make sure that it will not be stolen or lost again. It will be open for viewing,” Ortega said.

Ortega was able to locate the medal with the help of three friends, Edward de los Santos, and lawyers Jorge de los Santos and Jose Escao, members of the Bayanihan Collectors Club in Manila.

PLDT starts work on $300M undersea cable system

By the third quarter of 2012, the Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Co. (PLDT) expects to double its international bandwidth capacity with a $300-million Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE).

PLDT said Wednesday marine construction work on the 7,200-km ASE started last week in Daet in Camarines Norte, where PLDT's cable landing station is being built.

"We have designed a future-ready network that can potentially supply more than 15 Terabits per second capacity, initially using 40 Gigabits per second wavelength technology, and in the future, 100 Gigabits per second wavelength capability," said PLDT Network Services Assurance Senior Vice President George Lim.

He added the ASE system will initially link Japan, Philippines, Hong Kong, and Singapore through fiber optic cable that spans 7,200 kilometers.

It will also connect the Philippines to Malaysia, and in the next phases, potentially to other economically vibrant Asian countries, such as China, Vietnam and Thailand, he added.

"ASE can be connected to other major cable systems to Europe, the Middle East, the other parts of Asia, and the United States of America," he added.

PLDT said it is jointly undertaking the undersea cable network project with NTTCom of Japan and StarHub of Singapore, in partnership with NEC Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd.

On the other hand, the Camarines Norte landing station is the third for PLDT, after those in Nasugbu, Batangas and Bauang, La Union.

The ASE is a new-generation, high-bandwidth, optical fiber undersea cable system, the biggest capacity international submarine cable ever to land in the Philippines.

Once completed, it will allow PLDT and its group of companies, including Smart, Digitel and Sun, to serve the increasing bandwidth requirements of their combined customer base.

It will also benefit large businesses like banks, call centers, and BPO companies, as well as small and medium enterprises that do business through the Internet.

With the ASE, new bandwidth heavy broadband applications requiring international access, such as IP-based data, external video content, and other external multimedia services can be offered by the PLDT Group, and easily accessed by its customers.

ASE will further enhance and fortify the resiliency of PLDT’s international network.

“A highly resilient international network is expected to survive man-made and natural disasters such as the major undersea earthquake near the Bashi channel in December 2006 which resulted in the temporary ‘isolation’ of some countries. ASE can easily help fulfill such aspiration of PLDT," PLDT Network Planning and Engineering Vice President Gene Sanchez said.

“With a highly resilient network, PLDT for instance will be able to divert all or part of its traffic towards Japan and the US, via the new diverse route that ASE will traverse if problems, such as multiple cable cuts happen to APCN2, EAC, and AAG cables which all pass through the Bashi channel between Taiwan and Luzon Island," Sanchez added.

For his part, Daet Mayor Tito Sarte Sarion welcomed the PLDT, NTTCom, and NEC guests and said Daet is very pleased to host the PLDT International Cable Landing Station in Bagasbas village.

He said the new facility will house the ASE cable’s state-of-the-art fiber optic equipment and supervisory systems.

“Our municipality of Daet is very fortunate to host one of the most powerful and far-reaching telecommunications facilities not only in the country but the Asia-Pacific. We are very excited that, as we welcome the ASE cable landing facilities, we are on the other hand repositioning our town to become the preferred location for telecommunications technology-dependent industries. We will now have PLDT which will make us viable and highly competitive," Sarte Sarion said. — TJD, GMA News

I-update narin sana nila, yung Java Hotel sa Laoag is now a 4-star hotel

I think updated siya kasi kabubukas lang last year yung Bayleaf Hotel sa Intramuros

dapat set by government/ or very known institution either local or international body!

as goverment stardard classification for hotel/resort/restaurant, nag jan ang DOT for giving the category/level with the help of NGO/Association (formulating the standard rating) in that respective fields like

Hotel and Restaurant Association of the Philippines(HRAP)
