Once the arrival and departure kerbsides are ready in October, traffic flow at the Penang airport will be smoother

GEORGE TOWN: Come Oct 1, the traffic flow will be back to normal at the Penang International Airport (PIA) in Bayan Lepas, which has been undergoing a major facelift since June last year.

This is due to the expected completion of the new and wider arrival kerbside as well as the new elevated three-lane departure kerbside by Sept 30.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) project manager Fazil Ahmad said work on both kerbsides were presently 42 per cent complete.

Fazil said the airport authorities were confident that construction works on both kerbsides would meet the Sept 30 deadline.

"We expect traffic flow to be back to normal by Oct 1," he said during a briefing on the latest developments at the airport on Monday evening.

The new arrival kerbside will have seven lanes compared to four previously while the departure kerbside will be longer and much wider -- expanding from only two 3m lanes to three 3.5m lanes.

The departure hall on the upper floor will also be extended forward to take over the existing two-lane driveway, but the expansion, PIA senior manager Mohd Ariff Jaafar said, would take longer to complete.

Mohd Ariff also revealed that RM1.6 million was recently spent on temporary diversion measures, following complaints by passengers and the public over the confusion and inconveniences at the pick-up and drop-off area.

Since May 27, airport authorities have set up marquees equipped with chairs, fans and lighting that would be used by passengers and the public for picking-up and dropping-off until October.

The marquees and their maintenance cost over RM400,000, Mohd Ariff said.

Apart from that, the airport also has sheltered walkways constructed for the comfort and convenience of passengers on both its landside and airside, he said.

State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng, who was also present, said complaints from the people had dwindled since the temporary diversion was in place.

"Some are still complaining but we urge the people to be patient for another few months," he said.

PIA's RM250 million upgrade is expected to complete by June next year with overall physical work completed as of May 31 this year at 29 per cent, just one per cent behind schedule.

The expansion project for the airport, which was last upgraded in 2001, is part of a RM60 billion fiscal stimulus package announced by the federal government in 2009.

The upgrading project over 340.5ha of land is divided into three main phases, which cover infrastructure and utilities, main terminal building and facility upgrades at the airport apron.

When the project is completed next year, the airport is expected to be able to accommodate up to five million passengers, with 1,300 to 2,000 people an hour.

Two canopied routes to shorten walk

http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2011/6/16/north/8895924&sec=North
AWARE of the inconvenience caused by ongoing renovation works at the Penang International Airport, the Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has spent RM1.6mil to increase the level of comfort for travellers.

MAHB project manager Fazil Ahmad said that the amount was spent on two tunnel-like driveways leading to the arrival hall. The driveways are covered by temporary canopies and have fans installed.

This, he said, would make the walking distance to the airport entrance shorter, and increase the comfort level.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2011/6/16/north/airport.jpg
Easing the inconvenience: Cars seen driving into the two canopied driveways leading to the departure and arrival areas at the Penang International Airport

Previously, travellers had to brave the heat and occasional downpour to reach the airport entrance leading to the arrival and departure halls.

Those driving to pick up and drop off passengers were also faced with much confusion due to the traffic diversion system, leading to constant congestion outside the airport building.

“The two driveways cut through the airport’s parking area, so they shorten the walking distance to the entrance from the parking lot,” said Fazil.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2011/6/16/north/airport1.jpg
New image: (from left) Lim, Mohd Arif and Fazil during the press conference on renovation works being carried out at Penang International Airport

“There is also a separate entrance for parking as opposed to the previous system where all vehicles used the same lane.

“This makes the diversion more effective — those wishing to park at the airport use a different entrance than those driving through the driveways to drop off passengers and to pick them up.”

State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng, who gave a press conference to explain the new system, said that the enhancement was aimed at easing the situation and cutting down on traffic congestion.

He said the temporary diversion would take place until the expected completion of the expanded departure and arrival halls on Oct 1.

“Upon completion, the drop-off area outside the departure hall will see an additional lane to the previous two lanes there,” Lim said recently.

He said a task force comprising the police and Rela personnel had been set up to help direct traffic and provide assistance to the public during peak hours.

The work to replace the existing driveway is part of the airport’s RM250mil renovation project, which is scheduled for full completion by June next year.

Penang MAHB senior airport manager Mohd Arif Jaafar said that as of May 31, the first phase of the renovation, consisting of work on the departure and arrival areas, was 29% completed.

Penang airport will look a bit like Ho Chi Min airport?.....
Has lots of natural lighting compared to Penang's current interior which is seems less "airy" less natural lighting from above. I prefer the natural lights and I wonder how much more heat will come in?

Emergency drill at the Penang airport
Tuesday June 28, 2011

Practice makes perfect: Firefighters attending to an 'injured' victim
at the Penang International Airport during the fire drill

IT was business as usual at the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas when the ground terminal was suddenly plunged into darkness. Bright orange flares were seen amidst a cloud of smoke.

Panic could be seen on the faces of the ‘passengers’ at the terminal and personnel of the airport as they fled for their lives when the terminal caught ‘fire’.

Three injured ‘passengers’ covered in ‘blood’ staggered out of the terminal and collapsed in a retail outlet as medical rescuers and firefighters rushed to their aid.

The injured ‘passengers’ were then carried out in stretchers to the assembly area as firefighters pulled water hoses into the terminal.

One ‘passenger’, unfortunately, ‘died’ at the scene.

Luckily, no one really ‘died’ or was ‘injured’, nor was the terminal really on fire as the whole scenario was actually part of the airport’s annual Building Evacuation Fire Drill.

Actual passengers at the airport were seen crowding around the injured ‘victims’ in horror and concern, however they breathed a sigh of relief when they were informed it was merely a drill.

Penang International Airport senior airport manager Mohd Arif Jaafar said that the drill was enacted to fully prepare the airport personnel if such a situation were to occur.

“This is to make sure we are ever ready to face such a crisis and to instill confidence in the personnel to carry out their duties in such a situation,” he said.

The drill involved about 300 personnel from several agencies including the Fire and Rescue team, police, St John’s Ambulance Malaysia, Ministry of Health and the airport health control unit.

SRJK (C) Chung Shan needs to relocate due to airport expansion
By CHRISTOPHER TAN
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2011/10/27/north/9779884&sec=North

A PRIMARY school near the Penang International Airport has asked to be relocated after the board of directors found that the present site is no longer suitable for studying in.

SRJK (C) Chung Shan, located on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, is asking to be moved because of the ongoing airport expansion project involving an engineering warehouse to be built behind the school.

National Unity and Integration Department field officer Por Joo Tee said the school board viewed the area as no longer suited for education as the development would interfere with the pupils’ studies.

http://starstorage.blob.core.windows.net/archives/2011/10/27/north/shan.jpg

“The board has identified a 1.86ha plot of land near a housing project on Jalan Tun Dr Awang, Sungai Ara, as the school’s new premises. It is well suited for the school because there’s a booming population there.”

Por is also MCA Bayan Baru division organising secretary.

School board secretary Teh Kim Chuan said the land belonged to the state government after the housing developer had handed it over for educational purposes.

“The land of about 4.6 acres is suitable for our school as the size of the area is almost the same as what we have now.

“But the school board of SRJK (C) Aik Hua on Muntri Street has also asked for the same plot for its relocation. We have asked the board to back down on their request as our plight is more urgent,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Among those present were MCA Bayan Baru division chairman Tan Lai Theng, school board chairman Khor Ah Chew and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) chairman Lim Boon Choon.

Meanwhile, Penang International Airport senior manager Mohd Arif Jaafar said the warehouse would be used as a maintenance depot for vehicles operating at the airport.

“The piling work was done over the recent school holidays to avoid disturbing the pupils.

“The expansion cannot be avoided as the airport needs more facilities to cater to the people,” he said when contacted.

SRJK (C) Chung Shan was built in 1951 on a piece of land donated by the late millionaire Yeap Chor Ee while the building was built by the late Aw Boon Haw, a philanthropist, who founded the famous Tiger Balm company.

The school now has about 300 pupils.

Airport upgrade in full swing
By KOW KWAN YEE
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2011/10/28/north/9790827&sec=North
GEORGE TOWN: Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad is confident that the ongoing expansion and renovation of the Penang International Airport will be completed by June next year despite that its construction pace is presently 2% behind schedule.

Its senior general manager (operations) Datuk Azmi Murad said the overall construction progress was at 54%, which was 2% behind schedule.

He said the construction was targeted to reach 56% by the end of this month, while the overall cost of the expansion plans remained unchanged at RM250mil.

“We are confident that we will meet the completion date which is set for June 2012,” he said during a media briefing session at the airport here yesterday.

Azmi said the scope of work for the expansion included improving the main terminal building facade, departure curb side expansion, extension of the domestic wing, interior upgrading and an installation of an in-line baggage screening system.

“One of the important plans is the extension of the departure and arrival corridors. This would allow for proper segregation of international and domestic passengers (here),” he said.

The new drop-off and pick-up points in front of the terminal building will open from Sunday onwards for buses, taxis and private vehicles,” said Azmi.

Azmi also announced that the new contact number for the airport here is 04-2520252. - The Star

Better facilities at airport
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2011/10/31/north/9805067&sec=North
A MULTI-STOREY car park and a hotel block will soon be built within the Penang International Airport ground, said state Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng.

“The car park, which will have 1,218 lots, and the hotel will be tendered to interested concessionaires via open tender.

“Both structures will not exceed 30m as per the Civil Aviation Department’s (DCA) Obstruction Clearance Limitation,” he told reporters after inspecting the work progress at the airport in Bayan Lepas yesterday.

Lim said airport users could now enjoy smoother pick-up and drop-off of passengers with the opening of the arrival and departure curb side and ramps on Friday, adding that lanes had been built according to vehicle types.

“The opening of the new drop-off and pick-up points has visibly eased traffic flow but the absence of signs has caused motorists to park haphazardly outside the terminal building.

“Signs and road-line works will be carried out at night when there are fewer cars to ensure the public abide by the system and not take advantage of the situation by simply parking anywhere they like,” he said.

The arrival and departure ramps had been closed to visitors since April this year due to the upgrading and repair works.

Throughout that period, passengers and visitors had to endure numerous inconveniences even though nearly RM1.6 million had been spent on temporary diversion measures following complaints.

Airport senior manager Mohd Ariff Jaafar, who was also present, expressed confidence that they would be able to meet the completion date of June 2012.

Earlier, Lim and Batu Maung assemblyman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim also visited the completed RM6.1mil road rehabilitation project along the coastal road on the Lim Chong Eu Expressway and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah in Penang.

They thanked motorists for their understanding and patience during the four-month road closure and diversion.

Abdul Malik said road users, including him, would get to enjoy a smoother and a safer driving experience along these roads.

I think it does make sense since the airport is still operating even though this massive expansion/renovation takes place. If they take of the roof first before putting the new one. If rain comes, then the building will get flooded with rain water right.

Looks like what you said has happened.... :bash:
It should be temporary and it has also stopped raining for a few days now so its not a major problem?

Penang airport may see further expansion
Marina Emmanuel
Published: 2011/11/22

The Penang International Airport is likely to see further expansion if plans to relocate the MASkargo Complex Centre close to the airport are successful.

Business Times has learnt that Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is re-looking at an earlier plan to expand the the existing passenger terminal to spill over to the cargo complex in Bayan Lepas to handle higher passenger traffic.

Sources said the MASkargo complex may be relocated to an area adjoining the Second Air Cargo Complex, which is in Batu Maung.

"The relocation of the MASkargo complex hinges on the acquisition of land, since the plot next to the second cargo complex is now where a ve-getable farm sits and belongs to a private owner," a source said.

The federal government is likely to fund the proposed passenger terminal and work will be carried out by MAHB.

A MAHB official did not respond to Business Times' query if the the proposed expansion plan is in the works.

The existing Penang International Airport is currently undergoing a RM250 million upgrade, expected to be completed next year.

The land on which the current airport, MASkargo and second cargo complexes are sited is believed to belong to the federal government, via the Lands and Mines Department.

The Penang International Airport was previously known as Bayan Lepas International Airport and its current terminal building was built in 1977 and officially opened in June 1979.

Over the years, it has undergone numerous upgrades, catering to users like Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Firefly, and Cathay Pacific, among others.

The airport registered the highest growth rate among airports in Malaysia last year, recording a 25 per cent increase with some 4.1 million passengers in 2010 compared with 3.3 million the year before.

The airport offers extensive connectivity with major cities in Southeast Asia.

To cater to increasing demand, a new cargo centre was opened for operations in 2000 with a capacity to handle 360,000 tonnes of cargo.

Waves of welcome

PINANG leaves symbolising the betel nut or pinang tree which Penang is named after and the design of ombak (waves) to signify Penang’s beaches and sea are a welcome sight for tourists at the Penang International Air-port.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd’s project manager Fazil Ahmad said the concept was drawn up by AHS Architects from Penang.

“Our island is surrounded by sea and the state’s name is derived from the betel nut tree.

“That is why the concept was designed in reference to Penang’s flag and logo with the Pinang tree leaves and the ombak (waves) in-cluded,” he said yesterday.

Impressive: The Penang Internatinal Airport with new roofs shaped like waves

Fazil said the Pinang leaves and wavy design to make it look like sea waves, were incorporated in the airport’s roof.

He said work on the roof design was almost 70% completed and the airport’s expansion and renovation progress was on schedule.

Fazil said the reported leak on the roof after a downpour recently had been rectified.

The RM250mil expansion and renovation work at the airport is scheduled to be completed by June next year.

The arrival and departure facility was opened to airport users last month to ensure smoother passenger pick-up and drop-off.

Upon completion, there will also be a multi-storey car park and hotel block which will be built via open tender.

Both the car park, comprising 1,218 bays, and the hotel will not exceed 30m in height as per the Civil Aviation Department’s (DCA) Obstruction Clearance Limitations.

And they plan to spend RM4 billion for a "ow cost" facility at KLIA, but they are budgeting a fraction of that towards a "regular" airport to make it look low cost. Go figure...

Present design of roof being changed from original plan as below. I hope that they will cover all terminal with WAVE roof as below. Then the outcome results will be better and incorporate with natural sun light.

The management should paid attention on details like black water piping and places ugly flower pots should be re-do.

Just need to do touch up and it will be fine.

Glidepath to replace Penang airport’s baggage-handling system
24 November 2011

Print Email

Malaysia's Penang International Airport has selected airport baggage handling and security systems provider Glidepath to expand its checked bag security facility.
The project involves replacing the 15-year-old check-in conveyor system with a 100% fail-safe inline baggage security screening system.
"Glidepath is proud to continue the bilateral cooperation between the Malaysian and New Zealand governments, its companies and its people involved in the upgrade of Malaysia's airport systems, and in particular Penang International Airport, which is a repeat project for Glidepath," says Glidepath Group chairman and founder Sir Ken Stevens.
The company will provide a complete suite of baggage management software that offers equipment control and enables bag tracking, allocation, sortation and reconciliation.
The suite includes GlideControl software, which has a range of functionality, from intelligent power saving to 100% bag-tracking accuracy.
GlideView will also offer maintenance and diagnostic tools, web-based reports, an extension to mobile PDAs and integration into other airport systems.
The project is to be completed by 1 July 2012.
Penang International Airport is located in the Bayan Lepas area of Penang, and is the main airport for the northern region of the country, serving approximately 4.16 million passengers.

Very important thing is the maintenance of the airport, and good enforcement of the streets at the pick-up/drop-off area. I already see something negative there: double-parking/stopping of vehicles and a bus blocking a covered pedestrian cross-walk. Now those things should not be acceptable: they give a bad impression of our cities.

That's the actual reflection of Penangites --> Stingy bastard for not willing to pay parking fee, and lazy bastard for not willing to park their cars at proper parking lots.

Haha, you are talking about Malaysians in general. But still cities have to enforce parking. Do you think Singaporeans (or pretty much people everywhere) are not stingy about parking? They have to obey traffic rules because of STRICT enforcements.

strict enforcement is part of it...are there enuff enforcement staff out there?.
what purpose putting all those signage and signboard - no parking/no littering/no smoking/etc when some 'donkey' and 'monkey' just couldn't understand that.
lazy to walk..so double parking, simply throwing litter from cars, etc. huh

of course Singaporeans obey to those strict rules but when they come to malaysia , they simply break the rules -still it is no good n looks fake attitude.

so it all starts from your attitude. are you good or bad.

It's a Russian freight airlines but don't know it's from Russia or others country or charted maybe..i don't know..

The reason i post this photo bcoz smbody says PIA can't handle B747 aircraft.. Actually PIA handle B747 since German Cargo operates during 1977-1993 before change name to Lufthansa Cargo.. I lived in bayan lepas from 1986-2003 and spotted B747 and Antonov several times in 1990s.. Singapore Airlines also used B747-400 during chinese new year every years.. So hard to find photo from early 1990s and i even don't have camera at that time to prove it..Glad to found one Antonov-124 pic even it don't show any landmark of PIA but i'm sure it is at PIA..

But i'm sure PIA not ready for B747-8 freighter, B747 LCF Dreamlifter, A380 and Antonov An-225 Mriya.. Need to upgrade and longer runway like KLIA. Even BKI and Kuching got longer runway than PIA..:)

But at Manchester Airport, their 2 runway length was just 3km and can handle A380 and Antonov 225-Mriya..PIA is 3.3km how??
maybe the surface material used to build runway were more strength than PIA and the runway width also larger than PIA..maybe PIA just need to upgrade rather than extanded their runway to handle larger 'Code F' aircraft..:)

the surface material has nothing much to do with the runway strength..its the number of layers that will determine the runway strength whether it is capable to accept such heavy load from A380. Technically PEN's Runway is capable to accept A380 but the taxiways are yet to be widened.

My point is, since these cargo flights can take off and landed. So, no need to extend run way.

extending the runway and taxiway can provide more flexibilities for departure and arrival traffic. One need not to take full length for take off, can depart from taxiway intersection. That saves a lot of time in single runway operation. Having said this, PEN, being smaller airport in terms of passenger handled compared to BKI and KCH should also have the runway lengthened because the importance of wide body traffic coming in and out of the airport.

If BKI have the runway lengthened why not PEN? BKI traffic are mostly narrow body. It's rare to see wide body in BKI on daily basis. Why the double standard for PEN?

Anyway for your information BKI has the worst runway surface in the country (for international airport) there are patches here and there and surface is bumpy. I don't know but until now the runway extension in BKI is yet to be operational.

MAHB upgrading Penang airport's drainage system
Tuesday March 13, 2012
http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2012/3/13/business/20120313175524&sec=business

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airports says major upgrading works are being carried out at the Penang International Airport.

Malaysia Airports said in a statement today the airport is still operational and they are making every effort to minimise disruptions.

The unusually bad weather over the past month has worsened the situation with rainfall of up to 43 mm, which is considered abnormal, compared to 10-15 mm on normal days.

The upgrading works, which involve replacing 44 submersible pumps located all over the airport to drain out water during heavy rains, would temporarily reduce the effectiveness of the drainage system.

Immediate actions together with contractors and the state government are being taken to overcome this, Malaysia Airports said, adding continuous improvements to the airport drainage will be performed on an ongoing basis and will be completed by June 2012. - BERNAMA

Bayan Lepas airport has been flooded by up to an inch of water for the past few weeks. — Picture courtesy of Penang CM’s office

KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 — Penang blamed the federal government today for the “state of severe distress” at the Bayan Lepas airport which has been flooded by up to an inch of water for the past few weeks.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng wrote to Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha today over defective work for the RM250 million airport expansion project, which he said is already behind schedule.

“The works being carried out are defective, resulting in not only leakages but also flooding. I am sure YB Minister will agree that it is an extreme embarrassment to the country to have one inch of water floating inside the terminal of an international airport,” he wrote.

The DAP secretary general called on the transport minister to rectify the situation which “is extremely serious and reveals a systemic failure in the whole project.

“It is therefore imperative that YB Minister take immediate action on this matter, and if possible to visit and see for yourself the sad and shameful state of affairs at the Penang International Airport,” Lim said.

The state government had also proposed on Friday a joint task force with the Penang Freight Forwarders Association (PFFA) to help resolve problems faced by cargo handlers at the seaport and the airport in the state.

Lim had said the task force could convey relevant problems and issues to the transport ministry since both ports fall under the purview of the federal authorities.

Flood woes at airport will be over soon

THE flood problems at the Penang International Airport will soon be over once work on the main terminal’s water discharge point is completed.

An airport spokesman said expansion work of the discharge point was expected to be completed in a month’s time.

He said underground pipes and electrical cables needed to be moved before the expansion work could be carried out.

The spokesman said the current discharge outlet was too narrow and was causing the level of rainwater in the area to rise each time it rained heavily.

“Besides that, the location of the airport which is at a low-lying area, is also a contributing factor to the flood problems,” he said.

The spokesman also said a report was submitted to the Transport Ministry about the situation.

PENANG: Cathay Pacific has increased its number of flights from Penang to Hong Kong, from 7 to 10, weekly.

There will be three additional flights to its weekly Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday flights.

The airline has added a new daily service from Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong, with four flights a day, making a total of 38 flights between Malaysia and Hong Kong weekly.

Cathay Pacific Malaysia and Brunei country manager Mandy Wu said Cathay Pacific had grown together with the Malaysian travel market for the past 55 years.

"We are delighted to increase the frequency of our service to Hong Kong, offering travellers from Malaysia better connections to Hong Kong and other destinations in our extensive international network," she said.

Cathay Pacific's maiden flight to Malaysia was on Aug 11, 1957, and established a foothold in Penang by offering seamless worldwide connectivity through its Hong Kong hub.

It's staff travel privilege, ID 75. Some airline like AirAsia give ID 90. But of course the staff discount are counted based on the most expensive seat for that flight. For SIN-PEN-SIN on SilkAir i usually pay around RM 350.

Airline to fly flag for Penang
By DAVID TAN and VIVIEN CHANG
north@thestar.com.my

CATHAY Pacific Airways will look into collaborating with the state government to promote Penang as a tourist destination in Hong Kong and Bangkok.

Its general manager for SouthEast Asia Wilson Yam said Cathay Pacific worked with the state tourism board to promote interesting destinations all the time.

”We will look into the matter and provide feedback to the state,” he said at a press conference.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2012/4/11/north/airline%201.jpg
Tourist destination: Yam watching the arrival of a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong at the airport.
He spoke after Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng welcomed Cathay Pacific passengers from Hong Kong on the airline’s additional flights for the Penang-Hong Kong route.

Also present were MAHB chairman Tan Sri Dr Aris Othman, Cathay Pacific Malaysia & Brunei country manager Mandy Wu and Cathay Pacific Penang Cindy Tse.

“Malaysia has always been an important market for Cathay Pacific,” Yam said.

”The additional flights from Penang and Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong reiterate our commitment in Malaysia.

“The enhanced services will better serve the increasing business and tourism opportunities in both countries,” he said.

Cathay Pacific started adding three additional flights per week for the Penang-Hong Kong route on March 27, increasing the number of flights per week to 10.

Earlier, Lim had said that the state government would like to work with Cathay Pacific to promote Penang to people in Hong Kong and Bangkok.

“In 2009, passengers arriving from Hong Kong stood at 56,543.

“In 2010, Air Asia started flying daily to Penang and the passenger number increased to 91,797.

“In 2011, there were 144,008 passenger arrivals from Hong Kong, representing a growth of 57% from 2010,” he said.

Well I don't think so. Maybe after the new roof is completed, they will start to dismantle the old roof part by part from inside. Some area may be closed to enable this procedure.

Balik Penang last Saturday, arrived from Singapore. The airport arrival/departure area for passengers improved a lot, despite so much are yet to be done on the renovation. the ceilings at least 3 times higher than previous ceiling. Felt so spacious. on the outside passenger pick up/ drop off area damn better than before.

May 16th, 2012, 09:33 AM
Actually la kan, looking at the amount of traffic (aerodrome) in Penang, it is one of the highest in Malaysia. If they construct a new tower, at least, they (air traffic controllers) are gonna have better and modern facilities to handle traffic in a busy aerodrome. After all, we are gonna have a new sparkling terminal. If they build a new tower, at least it will complement each other in term of architecture. Somehow, the current tower looks so 1970s and the color is a bit eye-soaring. Who knows, maybe there's a proposal by in near future. Let's hope the best for PEN.:)

That would make a lot of sense. For that to happen, there should be an integrated transportation system with the mainland, or a high speed train across one of the bridges to the airport. Imagine how sweet that would be? Tourists zipping across Penang bridge enjoying the view of the city and entering Georgetown city centre or Gurney Drive.

Not much of a chance of that happening now since the current airport had been renovated. With the inadequate transportation system in Malaysian cities, maybe it is better for airports to be closer to the city centre so that it would not cost so much petrol to get there, and that visitors would not be 'ripped off' so much or held hostage by cab drivers. Taking the buses here is a real pain too.

that one runway is good enough untill it reach 20mil pax..

It still a long long way to go..

So what with this desire to wanna go out & waste money

Even if it move.likely it wont go to p.w. the land is still penang, it expensive n limited.most likely it would b in the forest or ladang in perak or kedah

KK airport is closer to the city center compared to Penang airport and Georgetown. There's no immediate need for another runway or new airport. Current airport with expansions would have suffice. State government should push for more effective public transportations, e.g. MRT/LRT/BRT/Monorail whatnots.

Yeah, Penang should have at least LRT to be built. LGE always blame not having support from federal. But, he can propose to build tunnels. Since he has the financial source (land lots) to fund the tunnels projects. He should have build LRT instead.

Use that financial source to build elevated rail road from airport to Tanjung Bungah, and sea port to air itam. It costs only RM3b (RM1.3b estimated in 2007) by comparing tunnels RM8b. State gov build elevated railroad and buy the trains. I believe federal gov (SPAD) will somehow force to grant permit for LRT to run once these facilities are ready.

Why can't LGE wanted to do LRT? No guts? Talk cock?

daeng_jal
May 18th, 2012, 07:08 AM
Me think this whole tunnel is not really needed yet..really?.they don't even finished p2x yet.but it needed to drive those gurney drive reclaimation to new high.

So 8bil state get by selling reclaim area to finance the tunnel. State use 8bil to build tunnel there. Land there become more more expensive!!!.

Arkdriver

i think all matters related to public transport must get consent from the federal government. Though you dig deep into state government's pocket to finance the LRT/MRT but the final say will come from Fed. That's from my understanding laa..

I dont see the tunnel project to be started in the next 10 years. Still a lot of feasibility studies to be done, money talks, politics, opposition from NGOs and Federal Government etc. Ive been here in SSC since 2007 almost none of mega projects materialize, hopefully by the time they start construction on the tunnel SSC forum is still here.

suhejla36

Tunnel project? Hmm, it is really a 'kedai kopi talk' by super cocky politician only lor. Big hoo-haa here and there but the core issue related to traffic jam is not solved yet. Building tunnel would actually allow more vehicles to the island and this wont solve anything. For me the real issue is, in view of increasing congestion, rising oil prices, depletion of oil and other natural resources and climate change, should we be spending billions on tunnel or investing all that money in more sustainable transport alternatives? Build tram or MRT laaa. Case closed ~

Yes, agreed to build NEW terminal on present location. Subject to available of empty space. If government willing to compensate village houses opposite present terminal.

Present terminal start from drop off point to check in counter area and holding area for departure are totally congested. I believe after renovation have more breath space but is not up to comfortable level yet. Not to mentioned the height of ceiling at arrival hall. The utilities facilities are bad condition before.

MAHB did a good decision to build a NEW terminal for KKIA opposite side of old terminal.

MAHB should do a plan for PIA NEW terminal soon.

Just think that if the airport is relocated to the mainland, it can free up land at bayan lepas land for even higher density growths. Really tall skyscrapers can also line the coasts along the entire stretch fronting the mainland. furthermore, an airport on the mainland has more room to expand, can be serviced by KTM commuter trains, benefiting folks in the northern states, Perak etc. however, this is only possible with a long term integrated plan, including a rapid system linking this airport to the georgetown city centre. this kind of long term planning issomething this country is not good at.

Quite a tough decision for Penangites. Most would object the relocation of airport to Seberang Prai I guess. Since it is known as Malaysia's Silicon Valley, somehow, Bayan Lepas needs the fastest way to ship out their cargos through the airport. Just imagine if the airport is now, somewhere located in Seberang Perai and shipment cant be done on time due to traffic on Penang Bridge, I would say it is a disastrous. I heard that lands next to PIA is actually owned by DCA (Department of Civil Aviation) and it is a matter of time that it will be used later for airport's expansion. Extending a runway towards to sea would be good to cater A380 in near future (hope so).

I suppose they could follow what Kong Kong has done. HKIA is quite far away but with excellent connectivity it has opened up new townships near the airport. I wonder if this kind of ambitious thing can happen here anytime in the future. Right now there is no need but it could be realized in the future.
