PENANG: Check-in counters at the Penang International Airport will almost be doubled when the RM28.6mil refurbishment work is completed in two years.
Senior airport manager Abdul Wahab Mohd Yusof said 32 new check-in counters would be built in addition to the current 32 counters.
But 10 of the old check-in counters would be demolished to make way for a building extension, he said.
He said the expansion was necessary to cope with the increasing passenger load and number of airlines taking up space at the airport.
This is the second major refurbishment for the airport since it started operations in 1979. The first refurbishment of the interior of the airport terminal was completed in 2001.
Ten existing check-in couners will be removed but 32 new ones will be added.
Abdul Wahab said apart from repairing the 14 aircraft parking bays which had developed cracks, a new one, large enough to accommodate the Boeing 747, would be built.
He said the airport had almost reached its optimum capacity as it was designed to accommodate 3.5 million passengers per year.
“Last year, 2.99mil passengers passed through the airport while in 2005, there were 3.1 million passengers.
“We have 15 passenger airlines and 13 cargo airlines utilising our airport and have received proposals from Mahan Air, Top Air and Asmara Air to be based here.
“AirAsia has also been increasing the number of flights from Penang following the rationalisation of the domestic air services sector,” he added.
Abdul Wahab said works to repair the surface of the airport runways had been ongoing for a year. The runways are now closed from midnight to 5am daily. Work should be completed by the end of the year.

wmkp June 29th, 2006, 02:51 PM Mahan Air? They did come few weeks ago on a charterred flight from Tehran, but would be good to get some direct flights from west asia. Top Air did come few months ago..bt had stopped since, The terminal should be expanded I must say..and Air Asia would most probably choose penang as its northen hub, and more and more Indonesian carriers are using PEN, more thn KLIA.

me and my colleagues did PCA ( pavement condition assesment ) at Penang International Airport 2 monts ago, and yes, PIA's runway and apron is in bad condition..patching here and there, cracks everywhere and uneven surfaces. Look at the photo below, cracks at the apron.

Continental doesnt fly to KUL. No American carriers fly to KLIA and i dont think anyone of them will commence flights soon because Malaysians are facing a very difficult time when it comes getting a US visa. Therefore, there is not enough traffic to sustain two airlines on the KUL - US sector.

Yeah they do. northwest and KLM are long time partners. NW code will probably appear on KLM flights to Amsterdam but that doesnt count because their plane will not appear in KLIA. Code sharing is becoming too common nowadays. If you purchase a northwest ticket here, you'll probably end up flying to Amsterdam first on a KLM plane and fly a Northwest plane from there.

New airline to boost passenger traffic at Penang airport
By Marina Emmanuel
March 5 2007
BusinessTimes
THE current under-capacity of the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas is set to change this year, with the entry of a new local airline.
It is learnt that the airline, which may be a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and called "FireFly", is currently awaiting its air services permit from the authorities and could be launched as early as this month.
Among others, the airline is required to convince the approving authorities of its customer service and safety capabilities, along with the number of personnel available to manage its operations.
A source told the Business Times that the Penang airport, designed to accommodate five million passengers per year, was operating below its capacity at the moment.
"Last year, only three million passengers used the airport so there is ample room for more," the source said.
MAS has confirmed that it is planning to set up a new domestic and regional operation to service the premium travel market, using the Penang airport as its base.
Codenamed "Project Firefly", MAS is reported to use Penang as a hub to service holiday destinations like Langkawi, Phuket and Medan, along with local destinations like Kota Baru and Kuala Terengganu.
Ahead of the new airline's entry, works are already underway to increase the number of check-in counters at the airport.
"There are currently 32 such counters but these have proven to be inadequate, so works have started for another 25-32 additional counters via a southwards expansion of the terminal building, the source said.
Meanwhile, it is also learnt that Penang's new low-cost carrier terminal is likely to be sited north of the existing passenger terminal building.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon announced last month that the Penang Government is in talks with Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd and the Department of Civil Aviation on land for a budget terminal in Bayan Lepas.
It is learnt that AirAsia has asked the State Government to donate the land.
The budget airline is also believed to be asking for rights to be the licensed operator to keep costs low for its passengers.

nazrey March 23rd, 2007, 01:13 PM RapidPenang to provide bus service to airport
Friday March 23, 2007
By YENG AI CHUN
TheStar
PENANG: RapidPenang would provide a bus service to the air- port as the state poises itself to be a regional hub for low-cost carriers.
RapidKL chief operating officer Mohd Ali Mohd Nor said the buses would ply from Bayan Lepas to Weld Quay at intervals of 20 minutes and each trip would cost around RM3.
“We are responding to the call by the government to provide a good public bus service to the airport. Currently there are no buses going there,” he said.
“It is important the people of Penang receive an efficient public transport service,” he said.
Rapid Penang would ply five main corridors on the island – Balik Pulau to Weld Quay, Bayan Lepas to Weld Quay, Air Itam to Weld Quay, Teluk Bahang to Weld Quay and Teluk Bahang to Balik Pulau.
RapidPenang, expected to start operations in August, is a sub-sidiary of RapidKL that is owned by the Ministry of Finance.
On another matter, Mohd Ali said it was not fair of the Bus Users Group (BUG) to say that RapidKL buses were poorly maintained and not disabled-friendly.
”On what basis are they basing their study? Anyway, Penang would have brand new buses and that should not cause problems,” he said.
The study by BUG which was conducted on March 10 and March 11 included interviews with bus commuters and resident association representatives in Kuala Lum-pur.
Mohd Ali said RapidPenang would discuss with the local authorities regarding infrastructure for disabled-friendly facilities be-fore incorporating these features in their buses.
“Even if we were to install spe-cial disabled-friendly facilities in the bus, we need to make sure that we have proper infrastruc- ture to support the facilities,” he said.

By Marina Emmanuel
April 3 2007
A 36-HECTARE site adjoining the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas has been earmarked by the state authorities for a new low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT), but it has not yet been decided who will develop and operate the facility
"It is not within our jurisdiction to decide, and we are awaiting word from the Federal Government on whether this will be Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd or a third party," Penang Tourism Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow told reporters yesterday.
Teng was with Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor who officially launched the inaugural flights for Firefly, the wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines (MAS), at the airport in Penang yesterday.
It is learnt that budget carrier AirAsia Bhd has asked for the rights to be the licensed operator of the new terminal, in order to keep costs low for its passengers.
Teng said the new LCCT will be sited north of the existing passenger terminal building.
"Once the terminal is operational, it will serve as a supporting factor in boosting Penang's tourism industry," he noted.
Teng said with the entry of Firefly into Penang, the state authorities were keen to persuade MAS to reinstate its direct flight from London to Penang and onward to Australia.
"There is also demand for direct flights between Penang and Osaka and we are confident that there is a sufficient load for both routes," he added.
Meanwhile, MAS managing director and chief executive officer Idris Jala said Firefly's launch will compliment the national carrier's five-year network strategy to capitalise on high-growth travel regions through a more connected network.
He said Firefly will focus on developing the northern Peninsular Malaysia routes as well as those to the neighbouring regions from its base in Penang.
Firely commences commercial operations from today between Penang and Langkawi, Kota Baru, Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu.
In addition, the airline will offer daily services between Penang and the two Thai cities of Phuket and Koh Samui effective April 13.
Firefly began accepting bookings since March 19, with a complimentary offer of 2,000 return tickets on a first-come-first-served basis for travel till April 30.
The new airline is also offering tickets at rates starting from as low as RM9 per sector, excluding taxes and surcharges.
wmkp April 3rd, 2007, 03:31 AM North of the terminal? I believe its the area next to 2nd Cargo Complex, weird choice really, so far from the main terminal, Penang International is not as vast as KLIA, it would b better to move the existing cargo complex to the one near 2nd complex and build a LCCT at the cargo site.Even now, the 1st Cargo Complex is crowded, the road leading to the complex is very narrow.
Pablo April 3rd, 2007, 05:26 AM North means just beside the current passenger terminal, i guess:D...there is a small land but i think big enough for the LCCT...that land is use to park those small planes...i guess they will move those planes to other place;)
fairul April 3rd, 2007, 06:49 AM i think its wise for MAB to move the MAS Cargo complex to the Second Cargo Complex so that it can be intergrated...so the MAS Cargo can be demolish can can give way for major expansion for the current terminal and ample space for the new LCCT...somemore if i have the power..i will demolish the food stalls at the junction heading to the Mas Cargo complex so the road can be widen....

If that's the case, then its ok, but they wud have to relocate Tanjong Flying Club as well, but I believe the area is too small for a LCCT. Another tarmac is being built near the private apron, constructions have started. That wud be for Firefly
triple-j April 3rd, 2007, 11:01 AM if there's any upgrading work on penang airport, it should be upgrading the facade and interior. penang is vibrant tropical city mix with arguably the best food, nice beaches, historical heritage buildings, new developments and industrial areas. hip and cool. not too futuristic but eye catching. should invite ole scheeren or zaha hadid to design the whole penang airport refurb works!!! just my dream tho.....;)

Honestly, KLIA LCCT is actually almost comparable to most of the domestic airports within Malaysia, if not KLIA LCCT is far better than them.
JB is a hub for AK but it itself is not a LCCT, Senai Airport is an international airport in fact.
Well, it all depends on how much money the airport operator wanna put in... of course we can say that with the experience they have from KLIA and KKIA, the BYIA (Bayan Lepas International Airport) LCCT should be better... but, no one can say for sure... there are a lot of factors affecting the development.

penang airport is a bit cramped...especially at the entrance for departure hall(with the retails and fnb outlet there) and the check in area..bit space constrained.....but i like the departure hall inside..it has this Changi feel to it....though i never like the ceiling with the 'ocean' deco...

PENANG: AirAsia can set up and operate a Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) here.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said the state had approved in principle the LCCT to be located on a piece of land near the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas.
“The land belongs to the state but has been used by the Federal Government since before Independence, so we also need to get Federal approval,'' he said.
It was learnt the LCCT is to be located on a 36ha piece of land.
AirAsia is the only airline to have applied to operate a LCCT, Dr Koh told reporters at the state-level World Water Day 2007 commemoration at the Penang Botanic Gardens yesterday.
Dr Koh was commenting on a statement by State Tourism and Environment committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow who said the state had agreed for a plot of land near the Penang International Airport to be turned into an LCCT.

I should say Pak Lah has actually given a lot of presents to Penang.. or rather priorities... of course as a PM and Penangnite as well... you cannot give everything to Penang since it is your hometown... he has to consider the development of whole Malaysia... especially when Johor can bring development to Malaysia...
What I can say is... the State Government should start to be more proactive in completing the projects given and fight for more development for Penang...
What is the point if PM gives everything to Penang but the local government does not know how to run the project effectively?

I was shocked when i first went through PIA because if it's not better than PIA, then it's comparable. Minus NAIA has slightly bigger floor area. Penangites should be grateful to have a nice PIA (from interior side) BUT i think we should have done better.
KKIA got billions to expand the current terminal, runway extension and a new terminal. Senai Airport well, the terminal is nice, but i think it's underserved. Modern terminal it is, it's better to build the new one for Penang.
I do believe that Pak Lah works hard for Penang but i think he should do more. It's been more than a year since he announced RMK 9. All i read in newspaper is IDR IDR IDR I grew bored of this. Maybe he should do that because it's him who cancelled the crooked bridge. So he has to give something to Johoreans.
I hope Koh Tsu Koon will become Cabinet Minister, let's get a new Chief Minister that will strive hard for Penang, just like what Ghani Othman did for Johor.
I think with only one runway, taking into consideration growing air traffic at Penang now, in 15 years time we gotta find a new land to build airport, or else, Penang International = Kai Tak

Arkdriver June 10th, 2007, 08:38 AM Ministry taking steps to promote Penang airport
PENANG: The Transport Ministry is working with Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Firefly to promote Penang as a regional and international aviation hub.
“With AirAsia’s long-haul flights kicking off in September and the on-going talks with the other airlines, we can look forward to new routes being introduced to and from Penang in the next one to two years,” Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy told reporters.
He said there was no urgent need to expand Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas as it had yet to reach its maximum passenger handling capacity of five million.
Last year, the airport handled nearly three million passengers.
Asked about a report on the potential development of a new airport in Penang mooted by Equine Capital, Chan said he was not aware of the proposal.
The report in The Star stated that Equine Capital is proposing to build a new airport at a cost of RM1.2bil in Batu Kawan and take over the land where the current airport is sited.
Earlier, Chan who was accompanied by MCA Tanjung division chairman and Paya Terubong assemblyman Datuk Dr Loh Hock Hun and state Wanita MCA chief Ooi Siew Kim, visited widow Mui In Lan, 75, and her 100-year-old mother Ng Wah Wong at their ramshackle house in Paya Terubong.
Chan witnessed the presentation of a cheque for RM20,074 to Mui by Munsang Poh Sdn Bhd’s chief editor Choong Loo Meng.
He also witnessed the presentation of a RM2,056 cheque to young leukaemia patient Lim Eng Huat, nine, by Choong at Taman Lone Pine.

but there's lots of things to consider before relocating the airport. like transport for example
Arkdriver June 11th, 2007, 08:06 PM bad news, the sun just confirmed the new airport was just a bluff!!!!
Koh Tsu Kooon said in early 1990's PDC (Penang Development Corporation bought a piece of land in Batu Kawan as a new site for the new airport however after careful studies by DCA they found the site's not feasible.
It seems we have to go Japanese by reclaiming a new island like what the Japs do with their Kobe, Nagoya, and Kansai airport. But it's just a wishful thinking.
With new lembap leaders in the shape of Pak Lah and Koh Tsu Koon, even getting a new terminal building for PEN seems like an arduous task. PEN handles 3 million passengers, Kuching 3.2 million, Kuching got new terminal years ago, i havent heard of any news about replacing the old terminal, even the low cost terminal, they decided to postpone it.
Perhaps the terminal is still 2 million short of passengers, the capacity is 5 million. Let's get more airlines to fill the capacity.

Arkdriver June 12th, 2007, 06:58 PM With all this airlines dropping PEN as their destinations, issit because of the Ringgit streghten over USD, more expensive to spend moey here than Phuket, Bali etc?
Major airlines dropping PEN from their roster is only KAL. There's no need to worry about the strengthening of ringgit because as we all know, major tourist comes from Taiwan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Britain, Middle East, and ASEAN countries. And it's not only ringgit that gaining strength, in fact all Asian currencies are moving in the same direction so US investor's only choice is to remain in where they are whether in Vietnam, China, Penang, the Philippines etc.
It's actually the weakening of dollar that affect electronics export from these countries to the US but it's only temporary.
With more connection introduce by Firefly, it's only a matter of time before PEN gain new connection/airlines. Airline traffic to Phuket and Bali are mostly (i can't say 100% but it's close to that) tourist while PEN handles not just tourist but also investors. Believe me, cargo operation in PEN brings more revenue to the state government. Electronics load from factories around Bayan Lepas, Bukit Minyak/Bukit Tengah and Kulim.

inspecting the upgrading work at the airport.
THE additional 24 check-in coun-ters and another aircraft landing bay at Penang International Air-port will be built by the year-end although the projects are slightly behind schedule.
The check-in counters costing RM11.9mil and parking bay cos-ting RM12mil are part of the RM36mil allocated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to upgrade the airport.
Penang Tourism Hospitality Committee (PTHC) chairman Cheang Chee Gooi said both projects were 2% behind schedule due to the unpredictable wea-ther.
The contractors have comple-ted 33% of the new check-in counter project and 40% of the aircraft parking bay,” he told reporters before inspecting the construction work at PIA yesterday.
Also present were PTHC vice chairman Lee Hack Teik, Penang Tourism Action Council officer Bobby Tan and PIA engineering department manager Mohd Nad-zim Hashim.
Currently, there are 32 counters and 15 aircraft parking bays in the airport.
Cheang said the authorities were confident that the construc-tion work would gain momentum soon.
“We have spoken to the con-tractors and they have assured us that the projects would be com-pleted on time,” he said.
Mohd Nadzim said the other upgrading projects included an additional baggage claim carousel and landscaping of the car park area.
The renovation of the aircraft parking bays, including the wide-ning of the taxi lane, would be completed by December next year, he said.

I really wonder why is there a need to expand PEN... I have never seen PEN filling all its aerobridges with planes. The most I've seen was only half full. That is even after PEN removed its Gates 1-4. They are completely underutilised.
Compared with BKI Terminal 1, it's so full of activity and movement. I've seen many times when more than one plane can't find parking and are forced to use the remote parking and passengers walk to the terminal instead. This is even after the completion of Terminal 2 for Air Asia.
As for PEN, Air Asia planes dock at the aerobridges, but they don't allow passengers to use it! We're asked to take the stairs and walk down the tarmac under the heat/rain, and make a long detour back into the terminal. IT'S RIDICULOUS!
Can't even fill their parkings, but want to expand?!! I oppose an LCC Terminal for PEN. If it is built, surely the main terminal will be even more deserted.
Although that, aircraft movement in PEN is actually good because of cargo planes. Expand cargo, yes. But expand passenger terminal, NO WAY.:)

You have to understand one fundamental difference between Penang Airport and Kota Kinabalu Airport. KK rarely ever receives large aircraft because the bulk of the traffic is domestic. Statistically, the number of international passengers Penang gets is three times as many as KK. I have checked the Malaysia Airports Berhad statistics section in the website. Penang gets quite a number of wide bodies a day and most of the international flights are operated via wide bodies. Singapore airlines alone operates 3 B777 services a day. Thai airways operates A300 services as well and the same applies to Cathay Pacific which operates either A330 or B777.
I do understand that KK has flights to many international destinations. However, most of them are operated by Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia. You also cannot deny that Malaysia Airlines operates most of the international routes as a result of social obligation. Their frequencies tend to be infrequent as well. Almost all the international flights are operated with narrow bodies such as B737 and A320. Even Asiana is using A321 for their flights to Seoul, a clear indication that the traffic volume is low. MAS and Dragonair are using B737 for flights to HKG and Taipei as well. The only international airlines that it receives are Asiana, Silk Air , Dragonair and Royal Brunei. Penang is served by at least 10 foreign airlines and is not dependent on MAS to operate international routes on the basis of social obligation. MAS for that matter does not have international flights from Penang except a daily PEN - SIN.
Therefore, you cannot assume that Penang Airport has very few users because the number of aircraft that uses it is less than KK.
White_soX September 2nd, 2007, 04:22 PM last year, I saw all gates occupy, even the cargo ramp full, the one that underutilized the airport is AK, so much for their red stairs!
Magician September 2nd, 2007, 04:58 PM i think talking about number of flights and passengers... Penang Airport has always been under-utilized as reported. Moreover, recently Penang has lost some of its international flights, namely Xiamen Air as well as KoreanAir.
Talking about number of international flights operating from the both KK and Penang airports... I guess both have roughly the same number of different flight coming in and out...
What I think our local authority can do is to promote Penang Airport and perhaps increasing the number of MAS flight out from Pen to other part of the world in stead of the local market.

I agree with you. One more point is that Penang International Airport is quite busy between 7:00am-10:00am and 8:0pm-10:30pm when MAS, SIA, Catahy Pacific, China Southern Airlines, Thai Airways flights land and take off at these periods.
chris2007 September 2nd, 2007, 05:23 PM I think it is hard to persuade MAS to operate any new international services from Penang. So, Penang should lure more foreign airlines rather than relying on MAS.

I think MAS in general has problems competing with other airlines that fly the same route as them. They used to fly PEN - HKG and PEN - BKK before surrendering them to Cathay and Thai. I wonder how long they can survive if KLIA is not underserved by foreign Airlines. KLIA for example is only served by two European carriers whereas SIN and Bangkok is served by at least 7

Arkdriver September 3rd, 2007, 02:44 PM some of the comment are well said, especially globocentric. For me i still stand for LCCT for Penang. If only they build Air Asia will agree to set up a hub in Penang and fly to India, Hong Kong, Macau and Chinese cities. I used AK, MH and SQ in PEN i agree with AK to use the stairs. It's their cost structure, if u are not happy, you can pay extra bucks to get MH flight. As for me, LCCT for PEN means more opportunities to be close to my family without the need of shuttling between SIN and PEN every week.
YeahWho September 5th, 2007, 08:19 PM There must be enough demand for certain international routes. Or else, SIA won't fly 3 times a day to PEN with a wide bodied plane as mentioned. I believe many of the PEN-SIN pax. are going for a transit in S'pore. So, M'sian or Penang gov't in particular must conduct a thorough research regarding the major final destinations these pax. are going and creating new routes based on this. MAS should take advantage of Malaysia being in the middle of the Kangaroo Route and use PEN as another option for the OZ/NZ/European pax. Somebody had mentioned earlier that LON-PEN-SYD is not viable but LON-PEN-KUL is more viable. I disagree. If a pax's final stop is in OZ or NZ, then he would straight away fly to KUL or even SIN for transit instead of makeing another stop in PEN. Hence, IMO, If MAS flies from PEN to London, Paris, Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland, it already taps into abt. 10 Mil. pax in the OZ/NZ region and > 10 Mil. pax in the London-Paris region. Keep in mind that Singapore is more known as a transit hub because of its strategic location. If it can do it, why can't we? Also, if MAS fly straight from PEN to TPE, many North M'sian can fly to LAX w/ the PEN-TPE-LAX connection. Otherwise, I'm sure many Penangites will choose SIN over KUL for transit. And that's the reason why China Airline does so well flying to PEN even though they have a bad safety record because it provides options to get connected to many North American destinations such as Seattle, LAX, SFO, and Vancouver. So does Cathay.
Also, the government better make sure they don't waste the tax payers' money by building a monorail connecting to Bayan Lepas and 5-10 yrs later, they decide to build a new airport elsewhere. They should first make sure if the current airport can be expanded to handle may be 20 Mil. pax. in 30-50 yrs time. If not, I would rather they relocate the current airport now, reserve the land for future expansion and connect the monorail to the new airport. Build it now rather than waste tens of millions later.
YeahWho September 5th, 2007, 08:23 PM Don't rely on foreign airlines first. MAS should tap into our own market. If other airlines see us succeed, they will follow suit.

Don't forget BA and Qantas just pulled out from KUL years ago. If they are to reenter M'sia, KUL will be their first choice. But it is good to MAS though because nobody is competing with it, of course bad to us as customers.

I doubt that BA will fly here again anytime soon either unless MAS completely withdraws from the KL - London route. MAS even reduced their frequency from 18 flights a week to just 14 flights a week for that matter. BA has to reduce it's traditionally high fares to compete with MAS low fares on the KUL - LHR route and i dont think this is something that they are very inclined to do. I think that was the main reason for their withdrawl from the KUL - LHR route. It was not low passenger volume
chris2007 September 9th, 2007, 10:15 AM Since MAS has already two flights a day to LHR from KUL, it is hard for BA to fly in again. But, introducing LHR-PEN-SIN by BA may be possible in future because apart from LHR-SIN-SYD, LHR-SIN-MEL and LHR-SIN-PER, BA does have another daily flight (BA011/012) which terminates in SIN without flying further to OZ. So, BA can add Penang on this LHR-SIN route at least 2-3 flights a week.
tbc September 9th, 2007, 02:09 PM ..... MAS even reduced their frequency from 18 flights a week to just 14 flights a week for that matter .....
My understanding is that the reduction in frequency is not due to any slackening of demand, rather due to unavailability or loss of suitably timed slots at LHR. Please correct me if wrong
White_soX September 9th, 2007, 03:23 PM I tot MH sold their slot to someone(I forgot). Also due to unavailability of 747, sum goes to Boeing, one go to Oasis while they need extra one to run LAX route daily. So, i guess that's are why the reduced flight to LHR.

It is definently a viable proposal. However, the flight is more likely to suceed if it flies to PEN via SIN. There are at least 8 or 9 direct flights a day between SIN and LHR and the passengers will not see any reason to put up with an additional 2 hours of flying time (including transit). The BA flight that terminates in SIN used to fly to Melbourne via SIN. Maybe BA can fly LHR-PEN-MEL instead. It will make the Melbournians happy as well.

BA withdrawl resulted in Melbourne Airport not being served by a single European Airline.
White_soX September 9th, 2007, 06:28 PM LHR-PEN-MEL is ridiculous, how issit going to be profitable? MH dun even make money flying LHR-PEN, let alone BA with their GBP. PEN is mostly leisure market, reason BA stop at SIN is to pickup/drop pax that transit there, PEN has poor connection around Asia, unlike SIN or BKK.

I've personally flown LHR- PEN flights myself and they were full. Quite a few other people who have flown the route said the same thing. Since when does MAS make money on most of it's routes anyway. MAS is actually losing money on most of the outbound routes from KLIA. I've been on a KUL - LHR flight that was half full. I have also been told that their flights to most European destinations are half empty as well. I cant understand why they even retained the KUL- Stockholm route. How many Malaysians actually go to Sweden? I was there last month. I flew there from Warsaw. The imimigration officer didnt even know whether i needed a visa or not. He even had to refer to a list
tbc September 10th, 2007, 01:57 AM The airline industry is mercilessly cut throat and pricing of tickets an intricate mystery fancily coded as yield management - so I read recently. It may be possible to fly a full load in the economy class section but the flight still lose money if the premium front end is not occupied sufficiently, or there isn't enough revenue generating cargo load in the belly. The reverse is true also, (ie full front, half empty back and good cargo load -> profitability) though unlikely scenario.
So yes, Europe-PEN-SIN/KUL may look good load wise, attracting low yield vacationers. However, for the more demanding premium customers (time is more money crowd), the inconvenience and delay of a transit stop may just be enough to nudge them over to a competitor airline offering non stops. Indeed, it is a very fine balancing game, even without kacau-kacau from Malaysian politicians !
Oh yeah, forgot to mention - everytime a plane does a transit stop, it means extra $$$'s in landing fees, fuel etc etc (quite considerable if you're flying a jumbo) Not to mention the increased possibility of operational delays, meaning more costs. It all adds up eventually.
btw, my discussion is on so called full service legacy airlines. LCC's and charter operations obviously follow different rules.
White_soX September 10th, 2007, 03:16 AM Care if I ask how many pax that going to PEN on that LHR-PEN-KUL route? Only couple of them drop off, again, as tbc said, time is money, PEN pax could connect at KLIA, they have lots of flight to PEN. If there are so many pax on that route, why drop it? Certainly it doesn't make money and of course political involves as well. ARN route is just to compete with TG, and most money come from the NYC-ARN-NYC route, full of Swedish and American both way, been on this fligh couple if times, it's full, even in Biz. Also, MH give the cheapest option to NYC from Asia vs TG and SQ. Only reason they don't make money on that route is because of low frequency per week compare to other Asian carrier to NYC.

At least half the passengers disembarked from the LHR-PEN-KUL flight when i flew. The fact that all international flights from Penang are operated by 8 or 9 foreign airlines and never MAS is an indication that MAS reluctance to fly international from Penang is a political one.
I've never been on the KUL - ARN - Newark flight but i will be curious to know how many people actually disembarked at Arlanda. I dont think more than 20 Malaysians will. However, if the Swedish immigration doesnt know whether a Malaysian needs a visa or not, i have no reason to assume that only a handful of Malaysians visit Sweden every week.

I can testify that the response on MH007 (LHR-PEN) was very encouraging as I had few times flying on that sector. Even if I didn't take that flight or greet someone arriving from that flight, I used to occasionally visit the Penang International Airport just to update myself (coz I'm an aviation enthusiast) of how good the response was on MH007 and I would say, it was encouraging as there were many passengers, both locals and foreigners walking out from the immigration checkpoint. So, the termination of MH007/008 might have to do with the poor passenger load of the outbound flight of MH008 or slot availability as someone suggsted.

Yes, premium passengers are very important. But, there is in fact, a hierarchy on flights plying between KUL and LHR. I would say that MH001/002 are primary flights serving premium passengers and passengers whose time factors are crucial to them. They also serve mainly on passengers travelling between UK and OZ because of its good connectivity and timing. This explains why the return airticket on MH001/002 is more expensive than MH003/004 or MH007/008. The secondary flights go to MH003/004 which cater for both premium passengers and holiday makers. As for MH007/008, they were tertiary or supplementary flights catering mainly for holiday makers because the government wanted to bring in more European tourists to Penang and Langkawi at that time. So, there should be no “premium passengers” issue on that sector.

Thanks for that - always suspected there was such thing but never had any clarification. I suppose the same then applies for SQ on LHR/SIN and CX on LHR/HKG with their multiple daily flights ?

I believe so. That's why whenever there is airfare promotion, one of the terms and conditions applies to that low airfare is : "This fare is valid for flight XX only". For MAS in particular, they always have this kind of term and condition during airfare promotion : "This fare is not valid for MH001/002".

There was actually no outbound flight for the PEN- LHR sector and this is something that has baffled me since day one. I cant understand the rationale of flying only inbound to Penang and not outbound from Penang. I dont think slot availability is a factor given that MAS has actually reduced it's LHR - KUL frequency. I have a feeling that passengers numbers have dwindled on that route recently partly due to the very high exchange rate between the ringgit and the pound. Furthermore, it is becoming more common for Malaysians to be harrased by immigration officers in Heathrow.
chris2007 September 13th, 2007, 05:06 PM Furthermore, it is becoming more common for Malaysians to be harrased by immigration officers in Heathrow.
Have Malaysians been harrassed by British immigration officers? As I know, their targets are those from South Asia and Africa as there has been an enormous influx of those people into the UK. So, the immigtation officers have to keep their eyes big on those people. When we say Malaysia is a diversified country in terms of races, the UK is far more diversified than us.
I have never heard about Malaysians being harrased before. I think as long as Malaysians hold a return ticket, there should be no problem for them to enter the UK freely and so the rest of EU countries.

I am afraid things are not so simple nowadays. I've heard stories of quite a few Malaysians being refused entry despite having a return ticket. When's the last time you went to UK or other EU coutries? However, the rest of the EU coutries are more lenient in general

My impression so far is that the LHR/PEN and LHR/LGK sectors were targetted at pax of european origin seeking sun & sand of Penang & Langkawi ? In which case, the weakening Ringgit vs GBP and EUR would make it more favourable (ie cheaper) for the ang-mo's :)

nazrey September 19th, 2007, 07:04 AM Penang airport to remain on the island
Updated : 18-09-2007
Media : The Star
PENANG: The Penang International Airport will not be relocated to the mainland, assures Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.
Dr Koh said that the airport on the island was here to stay in Bayan Lepas.
"We can be assured that the airport will be anchored here at its present site, as it is being planned to undergo extensions for its cargo and passenger sectors.
"Thus we are sure that the airport will not fly away. It will not be 'Bayan Terlepas'," he said.
Under the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), the airport will be expanded soon to cater to increased cargo movement and tourist arrivals.
The airport has an annual capacity of 5mil passengers and good connections with major cities in South East Asia.
Dr Koh was refuting recent talks that the airport might be relocated to Seberang Prai.
Dr Koh said this in his speech at the launching of Henry Butcher Penang's 'From Penang with love-A real estate guide for expatriates', a result of collaboration between Malaysia Airlines and Henry Butcher Malaysia (Penang).
Also present were Henry Butcher Malaysia director Dr Teoh Poh Huat and Malaysia Airlines northern region area manager Wan Mohd Ebrahem.
"We are releasing an initial 5,000 copies of the book 'From Penang with love-A real estate guide for expatriates' for selected bookstores in Penang.
"We plan to release another 10,000 copies for sales in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Singapore, and UK before the end of the year.
"The second edition of this book is scheduled to be out in mid-2008," he said.
Teoh said the book's objective was to create and capture new demand for real estate investments from countries such as Singapore, India, Hong Kong, China, Europe, and US.
"The book includes topics such as an overview of the property market, property transactions, home financing, and directory homes," he said.
Teoh said he planned to introduce next year another real estate guide for expatriates, focusing of the properties in the Klang Valley, Langkawi, and East Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Wan Mohd said Malaysia Airlines planned to bring into Malaysia about 25,000 passengers per annum with property investment intentions.

PENANG: The Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas is in not danger of being relocated to the mainland, Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said.
He gave the assurance that the airport would remain on the island despite concerns that it would be relocated to the mainland.
Speaking at the launch of a Penang property investment guide book here yesterday, Koh said: “We can be assured that the airport will be further expanded and there’s no danger for the airport flying away.
“With the airport firmly anchored in Bayan Lepas and due for a series of expansions for passenger and cargo facilities, we can be assured that the airport is here to stay. In that way, our airport does not have to be Bayan Terlepas.”
He was refuting recent talks that the airport be relocated to the mainland. The airport, earmarked for expansion, is targeted for an increase in tourist arrivals and cargo movement under the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) blueprint.
The expansion of the airport, with an annual capacity of five million passengers, will also enable it to become the premier air cargo hub within the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT), supporting industrial parks and creating premium overseas markets for perishable high-value products
Meanwhile, the book, entitled From Penang With Love – A Real Estate Guide for Expatriates, is a collaborative effort between Henry Butcher Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines and targeted specifically for foreigners planning to invest in properties in Penang.
Henry Butcher Malaysia (Penang) director Dr Teoh Poh Huat said many foreign investors had begun to look into Malaysia as a fertile ground.
“Malaysian properties are seen to be very ‘sexy’ as prices in the West, Middle East and China to name a few, have appreciated tremendously over the last few years,” he said, adding that foreign investments of properties are now considered as FDIs.
On the initial print run of the book, he said it would be about 5,000 copies for the local market to be distributed at local bookstore chains nationwide soon besides having it available for online purchase by month-end.
“Also, by the end of the year, we hope to print 10,000 more copies of the book of which more than 60% will be destined for overseas markets, such as Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and Singapore.
“An updated version of the book, which is likely to include a real estate guide to properties in Langkawi will be out by mid next year, while a similar guide book on properties in Kuala Lumpur as well as in Sabah and Sarawak should be out during that time,” he added.

Cathay Pacific Airways to add non-stop Penang-HK flight
www.chinaview.cn 2007-12-24 13:01:27 Print
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd will add another non-stop flight from Malaysian northern state of Penang to Hong Kong from June next year, bringing its total non-stop service between the two cities to four per week, local media reported on Monday.
This new non-stop flight will replace one existing flight via Kuala Lumpur, the New Straits Times said.
The new non-stop flight has been added in response to growing number of passengers from Penang to visit Hong Kong, said Katherine Lo, newly appointed Cathay Pacific country manager for Malaysia and Brunei.
Cathay Pacific currently operates daily flights from Penang to Hong Kong, with four via Kuala Lumpur and three direct.
The carrier operates the Hong Kong-Kuala Lumpur-Penang flights using a mixture of B777 and A330 equipment.
The carrier's system wide passenger load factor, the percentage of seats filled with paying passengers, has been in the 80 percent region and the load factor on its Malaysia-Hong Kong flights are largely reflective of this, Lo said.
"We expect our load factor between Malaysia and Hong Kong to continue at this level next year.
"We are optimistic that we can fill the extra capacity resulting from the additional direct flight between Penang and Hong Kong with passengers," the New Straits Times quoted Lo as saying.
The carrier is also expected to gain from the Beijing Olympics next year, but will not be offering any special travel packages in conjunction with the games as it is not the official airline partner, Lo said.
Cathay Pacific's passenger traffic growth from Malaysia remains unaffected by the operations of low-cost carriers (LCCs), particularly that of AirAsia which offers flights to Macao from Kuala Lumpur, Lo said.
"Our target market is different. We are a premium air travel provider, while they (AirAsia) pride themselves as an LCC," he added.
Routes between Malaysia and Hong Kong are profitable for the carrier, Lo said.

GEORGE TOWN: Talks are on-going to increase the frequency of direct flights between Penang and Hong Kong, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said.
Lim said currently, there were only three Penang-Hong Kong direct flights offered by Cathay Pacific Airways weekly.
He said the number was insufficient to meet the influx of trade and business partners from Hong Kong.
"We are in an advanced stage of negotiation with the airline on the matter.
"With more direct flights, we hope to forge closer bilateral ties with the city," he told a press conference after a courtesy call on him by Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office director Lam Kam Kwang here yesterday.
Lim said there were also plans to have new direct flight between Penang and other international destinations including the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
He said UAE and other Middle East countries offer business opportunities for Penang.
"Increased direct air links will further boost the state economic, trade and tourism industries," he added.
Earlier, Lim said it was imperative for the Penang water authority to emulate its Hong Kong counterpart in improving water quality in the state.
The water supply quality has deteriorated as a result of global environmental pollution.
He said the Hong Kong water works authority had agreed in principle to assist the state government in the matter.
travellator May 12th, 2008, 03:59 PM Cathay Pacific To Offer Fourth Direct Flight To Hong Kong Next Month
KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) -- Cathay Pacific Airways will launch its fourth direct flight to Hong Kong through the airline's Penang hub next month.
In a statement today, the airline said the new additional A330 non-stop flight will start service from June 5, increasing its flight frequency to four times direct weekly and complementing the three times weekly services to Hong Kong via Kuala Lumpur.
Effective from June 6, the daily flights, namely Hong Kong-San Francisco, Hong Kong-Shanghai and Hong Kong-Beijing, are the additional destinations with convenient connecting flights from Penang via Hong Kong, it said.
There will be no change with Cathay Pacific's existing service on other days of the week.
The additional direct CX693 Hong Kong to Penang service, which operates every Thursday, is scheduled at a departure time of 1600 hours, enabling more connections from the Cathay Pacific and Dragonair, the airline said.
It added that the initiative served to further enhance its service to passengers. Cathay Pacific also said that it will continue to actively promote Malaysia across its network this year with the government's decision to extend "Visit Malaysia Year" from 2007 to 2008.

Painful trip
TOURIST van driver Eddy Yap Guan Cheng (pic) claimed he was sent to pick up a group of Indonesian tourists at the Penang International Airport but ended up having to leave the place empty handed and a painful limb.
He said a tour agency had paid him and another van driver, Tan Eu Kok, to pick up 12 Indonesians on May 28.
However, as they were driving out from the airport at 2.30pm, about 20 airport limousine drivers blocked the road and forced them to get out, alleged Yap, 59.

Yap, demonstrating how he took the punch.
“When they demanded to see my permit, I showed them my Puspakom sticker. Dissatisfied with this, one of them tried to punch me on the eye but I managed to avoid this. However, he managed to kick me on the thigh, causing me to fall down.
“They then ordered the passengers to get out of our vans and told us to drive off,” he told a press conference called by state Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang at Komtar recently.
Yap had lodged a police report at the airport police station on the same day.
Law said he had received many complaints from hotel and hospital operators on their difficulties in picking up their customers from the airport because of the airport taxi drivers,
However, he said, the state government is unable to do anything.
“It is up to the police and other relevant authorities to solve the problem,” he said.
He said such incidents would tarnish Penang tourism image.
Law said he would urge the police to take stern against the errant taxi drivers.
Penang Airport Limousine Drivers Association chairman Noor Ashikin Amman said he was not aware of the matter and declined to comment.

I once saw with my own eyes how a taxi driver in front of KLCC hurled verbal abuse (the f word) to a Caucasian tourist because he insist that the driver uses meter instead of fixed price. And there has been incidence where foreign tourists were charged RM 500 for A trip from KL hotel to Genting Highlands (i read in some newspaper last year)
But what happen in Penang, as described in RizalHakim article is in different league altogether. These scumbag have crossed the line from being a con artist to being a downright criminal.

PENANG: The Penang state government has called on the transport ministry to compel Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to hasten the upgrading works at the Penang International Airport.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the dilapidated condition of the airport, especially the washrooms, left much to be desired.
“The last time the airport was renovated was in 2001 at a cost of RM39.7 million. There is an urgent need to upgrade the (squatting) toilets which are not favoured, especially by Westerners and this does not augur well for an international airport.
“At least 60 toilets which are tourist friendly were supposed to have been built but have yet to be implemented,” Lim said in a statement yesterday.
He said Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat, in reply to his written question, had said the upgrading works were in the process of being carried out. Lim said the tenders were supposed to have been called for last month.
“Being an international airport and the focal point of many tourists arriving into the country, this airport should have facilities of the same standards as the KLIA.
“We do not want the state’s image to be marred by filthy and out-of-date toilets, and we hope the ministry will carry out the necessary upgrading works as soon as possible,” he added.

rizalhakim August 8th, 2008, 05:24 AM Penang Airport needs renovation
GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is urging the Transport Ministry, through Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, to speed up renovation works at Penang International Airport.
Lim said the airport's deplorable state was compounded by washrooms in bad condition.
"This does not reflect the airport's status as an international airport. It is important for us to project a good image to visitors and tourists who come here.
"We do not want the state's image to be tarnished just because of this. We are worried that it will be a factor to a decrease in the number of local and foreign visitors coming here," he added.
Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat had earlier stated that the last time renovation works were carried out at the airport was on March 1, 2001, costing RM39.7 million.
They covered expansion works and renovation of the building's terminal.

BOSTON: The Penang International Airport will be the second airport after the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang to be recognised as a "green" airport, says Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB) managing director Datuk Seri Bashir Ahmad.
The airport operator is currently taking steps to make all airports under its management environmentally-friendly.
"We will start with the international airports. It is going to be slightly harder (with the other domestic airports) as they are not designed to be environmentally-friendly," he said.
Bashir also said that KLIA has embarked on an initiative to be carbon-neutral. However, there is no target date set for the airport to be carbon-neutral.
"It will be based on what we can control because we cannot control aircraft emission," he added.
Earlier, Bashir presented a talk on "KLIA: Built to be Green" at a session on Changing for Climate Change.
He said one of the green initiatives that generates revenue to MAHB is the planting of oil palm plantation around KLIA to reduce noise pollution.
Meanwhile, Boeing managing director (environmental strategy) Billy Glover said the planemakeris focusing on technology, fuel and efficiency to reduce carbon emission by airplanes.
"Seventy-five per cent of our research and development has some environmental outcome associated with it," he said.

rizalhakim January 10th, 2009, 05:07 AM Lim shocked by RM1m toilets
GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng yesterday expressed shock that the cost of recent renovations to toilets at the Bayan Lepas International Airport came to RM1 million.
Lim, who held a meeting with airport officials in Komtar yesterday, said he was briefed that the renovation costs for the toilets amounted to RM250,000 each.
"I was told there are four toilets. They must indeed be very expensive toilets."
The airport's senior manager, Abdul Wahab Yusof, had earlier informed Lim that the high cost was due to vandalism.
"That is why the cost came to about RM250,000 each," he said.
Lim had, during the meeting, urged airport authorities to maintain cleanliness in the airport's toilets.
"I have received complaints that the toilets are very dirty.
"I am sure tourists arriving at the airport, and others who use the toilets, will be disgusted if they are dirty."

08-01-2009: by Regina William
GEORGE TOWN: Instead of having two low-cost carrier terminals (LCCT) almost right next to each other, there should be one built in Penang, besides expanding the existing Bayan Lepas International Airport, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said yesterday.
Lim was commenting on The Edge Financial Daily report that Sime Darby and AirAsia Bhd would collaborate to build a RM1.6 billion LCCT terminal in Labu, Negri Sembilan and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) was also planning to set up a bigger LCCT to replace the existing one.
The Sime Darby-AirAsia joint proposal is for the development of an LCCT on a 2,800ha site owned by Sime Darby in Labu while MAHB has yet to finalise its plans for the expansion of the LCCT.
“Why can’t one of them come to Penang? Why the need for duplication and also conflict between MAHB and the two parties and so much money being poured in.
“I hope this confusion is sorted out and the respective parties will seriously consider building an LCCT in Penang and also expanding the present airport,” said Lim.
He said Penang had been left out despite it being the second highest profit centre for both MAHB and AirAsia.
“Penang is the logistics hub for the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) and also the northern gateway for the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMTGT), and we need the LCCT and upgraded airport more than the need to build two LCCTs at the same location,” Lim said at a press conference.
He said the deplorable condition at the Penang airport should be seriously looked into by MAHB. “Even the Kota Bharu airport is in a much better condition,” he added.
Lim said he has officially communicated to Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat and also the other players on the need for the airport expansion and also proposed an LCCT for Penang.

By Marina EmmanuelPublished: 2009/01/15
LOW-cost carrier AirAsia Bhd is looking at Penang as a potential hub for a low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT).
It is learnt that group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes made a case to the Penang government to build the terminal and the authorities are keen on his proposal.
Sources said the proposed LCCT in Penang would be independent from the budget air terminal that AirAsia wants to build in Labu, Negri Sembilan.
The proposed Penang terminal has been priced at RM120 million, excluding the cost of land, said sources.
At a presentation made on Tuesday to Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, elected representatives, industrialists along with selected government and quasi-government agencies in Penang, Fernandes did not indicate how much land was needed for the LCCT.
However, he proposed two sites which are aligned with the Penang International Airport at Bayan Lepas. The land, however, does not belong to the state government.
During the briefing at Lim’s office at Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak in George Town, Fernandes stressed the need for AirAsia to find sufficient parking bays at night for his aircraft and the fact that there would be a problem soon when the airline took delivery of additional planes.
“By offering point-to-point flights from various hubs, AirAsia will be able to solve its parking issue while Penang will benefit via the coverage of direct flights serviced by AirAsia,”
said a source.
Apart from Malaysia Airlines, which offers direct international
flights from Penang to selected destinations, other carriers using the airport include AirAsia, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airways
International, Lion Air, Singapore Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Airlines, Firefly, Kartika Airlines and Sriwijaya
Air.
AirAsia began flying into Penang in 2002 and offers direct flights to cities in Thailand and Indonesia.
Fernandes declined to comment on the matter, while Lim could not be reached.
In 2007, the Penang government gave conditional approval to LC Airfields Sdn Bhd to set up a low-cost carrier terminal on the island.
Business Times had reported that the proposed LCCT would likely be sited north of the passenger terminal building in Bayan Lepas, and that AirAsia had asked for rights to be the licensed operator of the new terminal in order to keep costs low.
The Penang International Airport was expanded in 2001 to accommodate an annual capacity of five million passengers.
In reality, the airport can accommodate only slightly more than three million passengers a year because space meant for transit passengers has been leased to duty-free shops.

FOUR Sharp Aquos 42-inch LCD television sets have been set up at separate locations at the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas to showcase the state’s tourism spots and cultural activities.
The screens show a 3.5-minute promotional video clip which the state Tourism Development, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said had received good response from tourists.
He said Sharp-Roxy Sales & Service Company (M) Sdn Bhd sponsored the television sets, each complete with a DVD player, at a cost of RM30,000.
Law said the sets were recently installed at various locations at the airport’s departure and arrival halls and the positive response prompted Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd to identify six more potential locations for the sets to be put up.
“At the moment, the screens are only showing the same video clip interspersed with Sharp advertisements,” he told a press conference at the airport.
“We are in the process of coming up with more DVDs of cultural activities like the recent Thaipusam and Chap Goh Meh celebrations in the state,” Law added.
The state, he said, would like to put up similar television sets to promote Penang at other entry points such as the Swettenham Pier and the Butterworth railway station, as well as at various popular tourism spots

rizalhakim March 11th, 2009, 05:51 AM Airport plan to boost Penang hub role
Published: 2009/03/11
THE proposed expansion of the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas received the thumbs up from both the Malaysian American Electronics Industry (MAEI) and the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (northern region).
“We hope the expansion plan will allow the existing airport to double up as a terminal for low-cost carriers as these tend to prosper during economically hard times,” FMM northern branch chairman Datuk O.K. Lee said.
MAEI chairman Datuk Wong Siew Hai said the expansion will enhance the state’s position as a logistics hub.
rizalhakim March 12th, 2009, 04:00 AM A shot in the arm for Penang
Published: 2009/03/12
The RM250 million allocation to expand the Penang International Airport, part of the RM60 billion fiscal stimulus package announced on Tuesday, will serve as a shot in the arm for the island-state during these trying times.
The state's economy, anchored on technology and tourism, has received a beating of late via numerous announcements of layoffs by multinational companies operating in its manufacturing sector.
And just as Penang began to train its focus on the tourism sector to insulate the blow from the job cuts by technology giants, national turboprop operator Firefly dropped a bombshell that it is temporarily suspending several flights operating out of the Penang airport.
Flyfirefly Sdn Bhd managing director Eddy Leong said the move is part of the company's network rationalisation, in view of the current economic times.
He gave his assurance that the airline is committed, in the long run, to connect Penang to a region of 70 million people (covering Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Southern Thailand and Singapore) and to provide feeder services to all airlines operating medium- and long-haul flights from and into Penang.
The expansion of the Penang International Airport is also a component of the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) blueprint, launched two years ago.
The proposed expansion is to enable the airport in Bayan Lepas to become the premier air cargo hub within the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle, supporting industrial parks and creating premium overseas markets for perishable high-value pro-ducts.
According to the blueprint, the planned expansion of the airport's facilities will include developing new passenger and cargo terminals and the addition of a new runway to cater for increased traffic.
"We are very happy with this announcement since it helps us with efforts to transform Penang into a logistics hub," Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) senior vice-president for manufacturing and industry Chris Tan said.
He said the NCIA and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) were the two agencies which have been rooting for the Penang airport expansion project, since it complements MAHB's masterplan for Penang.
Once the project is completed, Penang will not only be able to boast of superior airport infrastructure to transport its high-technology exports, but also perishable food like high-value seafood items and agriculture products from the northern states.
In expanding air links to bring in more international visitors into the NCER, the airport expansion can also accommodate the needs of low-cost carriers.
"We hope the expansion plan will include provisions where the existing airport can double up as a terminal for low-cost carriers, since low-cost airlines tend to prosper during economically-hard times," FMM northern branch chairman Datuk O.K Lee said.
"Firefly hopes the Penang airport will be modified to better suit the operations of turbo-prop aircraft," said Leong, "and we believe that keeping airport operators independent of airlines is the correct way forward."
Apart from Firefly, other carriers using the Penang airport include MAS, AirAsia, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airways International, Lion Air, Singapore Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Airlines, Kartika Airlines and Sriwijaya Air.
The Penang International Airport was expanded in 2001 to accommodate an annual capacity of five million passengers.
In reality, the airport can accommodate only slightly more than three million passengers a year because space meant for transit passengers has been leased to duty-free shops.
The state can also thank Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for announcing the 50 per cent rebate on landing charges (for two years effective April 1) to all airlines that operate from Malaysia, since this incentive can now be dangled in welcoming more international arrivals into the NCER.

By Marina Emmanuel Published: 2009/04/09
THE RM250 million expansion of the Penang International Airport is slated for completion by the end of 2010, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat says.
He said work on the project, which is part of the RM60 billion economic stimulus package unveiled last month, is due to begin in July.
"Malaysia Airports (Holdings) Bhd is currently at the planning stage of the expansion exercise and the contract is yet to be awarded," he told Business Times in an e-mail interview.
He said the expansion plans for the airport, located in Bayan Lepas on the island, were conveyed to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng last August when Ong called on him in Penang.
Apart from the expansion of the Penang airport, the RM60 billion second stimulus package, or mini-budget, also provides for the construction of a new low-cost carrier terminal at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Ong said the main components for the Penang airport upgrading works will include upgrading and expansion of the existing passenger terminal, a new multi-storey car park, a new central utility building, security fencing, main infrastructure works, and extension to the aircraft parking apron
"The scope of work mentioned will also cater for low-cost carrier operators," Ong noted.
The Penang International Airport was last expanded in 2001 to accommodate an annual capacity of five million passengers.
In reality, the airport can accommodate only slightly more than three million passengers a year because space meant for transit passengers has been leased to duty-free shops.
Apart from Malaysia Airlines, which offers direct international flights from Penang to selected destinations, other carriers using the airport include AirAsia, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airways International, Lion Air, Singapore Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Airlines, Firefly, Kartika Airlines and Sriwijaya Air.

Published: 2009/04/27
MALAYSIA Airlines Cargo Sdn Bhd (MASkargo) has been named Best Air Cargo Carrier in Asia by readers of Cargonews Asia.
MASkargo general manager of revenue management Jamaluddin Ismail received the award at the 23rd annual Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards 2009(AFSCA) in Hong Kong recently.
"Winning the award against major players like Cathay Pacific Cargo and Singapore Airlines Cargo is a testament of the efficiency and world-class handling service provided by MASkargo.
"The implementation of various service enhancement projects at our facility has helped in ensuring high-quality service to our customers and that is a key factor which has contributed to our outstanding performance," Jamaluddin said in a statement.
MASkargo managing director Shahari Sulaiman, meanwhile, said the award would serve as a morale booster for the company, especially during the current economic turbulence.
"More and more people are using MASkargo to fly their consignment as they believe in the brand and know that their cargo is in good hands.
"They are sure that their cargo will reach its destination safely and soundly because we walk the talk when we say that we 'keep business moving'," he said.
Overall, Malaysia did well in the AFSCAs. KTM Malaysia won the Best Rail Operator beating Canadian National Railway and Far Eastern Transport Group; Northport Malaysia won the Best Container Terminal in Asia, beating Asia Container Terminal HKG and Shanghai Container Terminals; while the Malaysian International Shipping Corp Bhd (MISC) sailed home with the Best Shipping Line (Intra Asia) award.
Penang International Airport won the Best Emerging Airport (Asia) award and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) won the Best Green Service Provider (Airport) award.
MASkargo is the air cargo division of Malaysia Airlines. It operates four B747-200F, two B747-400F and one A300-600F covering the world's major cargo hubs. It also offers belly space capacity on Malaysia Airlines passenger fleet, serving almost 100 destinations worldwide.

YeahWho April 27th, 2009, 06:19 PM ^^Good to hear that. But I really hope that one day in the near future, Penang will have more international routes besides what it currently serves. Also hope that the airport will get a total revamp on its baggage security. I had a very bad experience last year with my CX flight from DFW to PEN via SFO and HK. My luggage didn't arrive with the flight and was delayed one day. When I pick it up at the airport, I found that it wasn't attended at all times by any MAHB personnel. There was (and I believe there still is) only a person at the delayed luggage counter and the counter is close to the main exit at the airport which can easily be accessed by anyone. Can you all imagine what would happen if somebody put a bag of drug or some sort of weapon purposely? I had made a complaint thru CX and they said they will let MAHB know about that. Hopefully they will beef up the security there.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang International Airport will deploy another thermal scanner next week to facilitate the screening of passengers for the A (H1N1) influenza virus.
Penang Health Department director Dr Teh Leh Choo said the scanner, which was ordered by the Health Ministry, was expected to be placed at the airport by the end of next week. It currently has one thermal scanner.
State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the state had two thermal scanners which were obtained during the SARS outbreak in 2003.

He also said 16 health officials were stationed at the airport and working on shifts. A passenger who arrived in Penang from Singapore on Sunday night said some 400 people had to wait in line to be manually scanned.
“The line was long because flights from Singapore and Hong Kong had landed at the same time,” he said.
On Monday, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai announced that thermal scanners would be placed at airports in Sabah, Sarawak and Penang.

Published: 2009/05/06
THE RM250 million project to upgrade Penang's Bayan Lepas International Airport (BLIA) will begin at the year end and is expected to be completed in two years.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the project, to be carried out in stages, included expanding and upgrading the airport's passenger terminal, building a multi-storey car park and improving the security aspects.
"The expansion and upgrading of the airport is necessary as it cannot cater to more flights which have already seen an increase," he said after visiting the airport today.
Lim said BLIA handled more than 3.4 million passengers, 193,000 tonnes of cargo and 39,798 flights last year.
He said BLIAS also recorded a profit of RM493.3 million between 2000 and 2008 or about 23 per cent made by Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad.
Lim also repeated his call for a low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) to be built in Penang due to the increased demand for air travel and to make Penang an important low-air fare travel hub in the region.
He said that according to AirAsia's forecast, about 1.7 million people would use Penang for low-cost air travel in 2009 and the number was expected to increase to 3.8 million in 2013.
Lim hoped the federal government would consider building an LCCT in Penang in recognition of the need for it and the state's contribution to the national economy. - Bernama

SILK Air, Singapore Airline's (SIA) regional carrier, is set to promote Penang as a favourite travel destination, following the commencement of its flights between Singapore and Penang yesterday.
Apart from Penang, it also flies to Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
Silk Air chief executive officer Chin Yau Seng said that Penang will be marketed to all destinations that SIA and Silk Air currently serve.
"We are working with Penang Global Tourism Sdn Bhd to offer either travel packages or just air tickets to Penang," he told reporters after welcoming passengers on the inaugural Singapore-Penang flight in Penang yesterday.
Penang Global Tourism is the state government tourism promotion agency.
Chin said about 60 per cent of Silk Air's passengers are made up of the business and leisure segments, and the remaining 40 per cent are from long-haul travellers of SIA.
In joining its parent SIA to fly a total of 21 times per week between Singapore and Penang, Silk Air will also join code-share partner Malaysia Airlines to increase flight frequencies to 28 times per week.
"We intend to leverage on our Singapore-Kuala Lumpur model. When we first started flying last October, it was twice weekly," said Chin.
"By December it was increased to 30 times weekly," he said, adding that Silk Air's plan now is not to add new destinations in Malaysia but to work on increasing the frequency of flights from existing destinations.
Chin said Silk Air's entry into Penang emphasises the value and importance of tourism, trade and business links between Penang and Singapore. - By Marina Emmanuel

LOW-cost carrier AirAsia Bhd (5099) will launch daily flights from Penang to Chennai, India in three to four months.
The airline has been granted rights to fly the route by the government.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the government is also in talks with other carriers to fly to regional destinations from the Penang International Airport this year.
"The liberalisation of air services is not only limited to increased flights to Singapore from Malaysian cities.
"We are currently in discussions with a few airlines to fly from Penang to Asian destinations," he told reporters after launching AirAsia's Singapore-Penang inaugural flight in Penang yesterday.
Also present were Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, AirAsia group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes and the airline's chairman Datuk Aziz Bakar.
Malaysia Airlines (MAS) withdrew flights on the Kuala Lumpur-Penang-Chennai sector in 2001, as part of a route rationalisation programme.
On whether AirAsia has put proposals to the government to fly into more Indian cities, Fernandes said: "Not at the moment because we are short of aircraft, but we are looking at more destinations."
Meanwhile, Ong said the commencement of Silk Air's direct flights from Penang to Singapore yesterday, along with those to be offered by Firefly, Tiger Airways and Jetstar Asia, bring to a total of 49 weekly flights operating between Penang and Singapore.
Currently, MAS and Singapore Airlines are plying the route.
"By March next year, the frequency of flights to Singapore from Penang will increase to 84 times per week," he added.
Fernandes said to date, 17,000 seats have been sold by the airline since it opened the route for sale on April 27.
"AirAsia is looking at carrying 60,000 guests on this route by year-end," he added.
Besides Singapore, AirAsia also connects Penang travellers to other international destinations such as Bangkok, Jakarta, Medan and Macau.

I hope to see more development on Penang International Airport... seriously thinking this airport has so much potential...
Considering not much fund allocated to the state airport but still it manages to do good... I hope the government can see this from economical point of view not political point!!!

SEPANG: AirAsia Bhd is establishing Penang as its eighth hub with the inclusion of another international flight from the state to Hong Kong starting July 31, 2009.
In a statement today, AirAsia said the new service was its sixth international service from Penang after Singapore, Bangkok, Medan, Jakarta, Macau and the third international service from Hong Kong after Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
Its other hubs are Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Bandung, Bali, Jakarta, Bangkok and a "virtual hub" in Singapore.
AirAsia said the new sector to Hong Kong and the introduction of the second frequency to Singapore, opened for sale for the booking period from July 7-12 for the travel period from July 31, 2009, to April 30, 2010.
AirAsia will be offering an all-in-fare from RM99 to Hong Kong and RM51 to Singapore to mark the launch of these sectors.
AirAsia regional head of commercial Kathleen Tan said: "At a time when some airlines are cutting routes and downsizing capacity, AirAsia is breaking the trend with our aggressive expansion plans, increasing frequencies where there is proven demand, which there certainly is for the Penang-Hong Kong and Penang-Singapore routes."

matthew2005 July 19th, 2009, 07:03 AM Thanks, jieloe...
But I thought I read news somewhere saying that Penang Airport can't handle B747 passenger plane... ?
actually Penang can handle B747 but in certain load only,
B747 which is full load cannot be handle by Penang Airport,
so now Federal Government have to extend the runway, to able Penang Airport to handle B747 without restriction
Magician July 20th, 2009, 02:47 AM why airasia flies to penang airport ?
I think you mean AirAsia X...? AirAsia has been flying to Penang since the airline first started!
Matthew, thanks for your information!!!
Well, since years all the regional budget airlines have been fighting to gain the landing rights in Penang Airport, finally Penangnites do not have to rely solely on SQ or MAS to travel between Singapore and Penang... this is definitely a good news to both Penang and Singapore and perhaps, Malaysia.
