View Full Version : mugley does the mother country
mugley July 1st, 2006, 04:38 PM Some pics from my holiday to London last month. The DSLR didn't come with me, so these are all done with the old Fuji s5500 digicam.
Standard disclaimer applies - some of these pics are quite large; if you have girly weak bandwidth, hit the Stop button now.

More pics on the way soon.
Principes July 1st, 2006, 04:41 PM Thx, mugs. Is it me or does Londons skyline blend very badly with its traditional buildings.
P.
mugley July 1st, 2006, 05:04 PM Yeah, the place is beautiful chaos at ground level and ugly chaos up high.
Arunava July 1st, 2006, 05:09 PM mugley does the mother country very well.
ryan79 July 1st, 2006, 08:21 PM Just a note on that bridge facing St Pauls Cathedral its the famous Millenium bridge. Its a suspension bridge that was closed and redone shortly after its opening because it swayed so much.
Did you get a pic of Loyds TSB building? Its right near to the Gurkhin and is very futristic looking.
Nice pics though, especially from St Pauls with the old buildings in the foreground, the 'city' on the left and Canary Wharf in the background on the right.
tayser July 1st, 2006, 09:25 PM how is the Millenium bridge 'famous' when you compare it to the name 'London Bridge' and the actual Tower Bridge?
anyhow, I got to know the chavy side of The City (Aldgate / Aldgate East) a bit recently, Royal Bank sent me down to London for a weekend, there's a corker pub right next to one of the Royal's major sites, it's amazing it's still operating as the floor has chairs positioned over great big holes and the bar itself looked like it would catch fire if the air temp went over 30 degrees. Frosted fosters taps but...
...THE BEER WAS STILL WARM.
Oh England.

Millenium bridge is still famous, the others are just more famous.
I work not far from Aldgate, right near St Catherines Dock. I go out drinkin after work around there and one of my work mates got attempted mugged walking back to the tube. He does boxing so he smack the shit out of both these guys.
But ah yeah, you try to avoid that area if you can ;)
And the beer - well I was just having a major rant last night because the Carling "Extra Cold" was room temperature. I was sternly told that it was very cold. Oh well.
mugley July 2nd, 2006, 04:09 AM Did you get a pic of Loyds TSB building? Its right near to the Gurkhin and is very futristic looking.Yeah, it reminds me of a HR Giger NYC series (http://www.littlegiger.com/limited/items/453.html) painting. Designed by a dyslexic bloke apparently. Got a couple of snaps but the light was in the wrong direction and I'm not 100% happy with them. I'll see if one scrubs up well enough to post.
Warm beer's not so bad. Warm lager is horrible.
Here's another one from Camden Town. Have a look at what the unfortunately-placed lamp post has done to the market sign :)

mugley July 3rd, 2006, 02:12 PM You worked for that angle didn't you?? ;)Wish I had - I'd have gotten in closer, framed it up better and not had to use a small over-sharpened crop :)
Some more taken on and around the south bank...

Aussie Bhoy July 4th, 2006, 03:27 PM Love the HMS Belfast on the river.
You can walk across the top section of the Tower Bridge, the views are great. They also have lots of quality old photos of that part of the river. Amazing to see the Thames iced over as it used to do each year.
shrewd.user July 5th, 2006, 07:51 AM love london... but i can't stand that gherkin building... god it looks shite...
Garmatt July 5th, 2006, 03:02 PM I think Londons buildings fit in quite well with the more traditional ones....but they can't just build them in pretty lines like Australia does therefore the skyline looks very disjointed. There are just far too many heritage issues to contend with. It's a wonder any scrapers manage to make it of fthe drawing board at all. Therefore not many scraper canyons in London town. It doesn't matter though, because at street level the city is awesome. That's why it took them so long to build a decent high-rise observation deck (The Eye) - the city is much more impressive from a non-elevated position.
I agree with Shrewd.user in so far that I believe Foster in general is over-rated and that he has blighted this city with alot of very dull glass boxes (think NAB Docklands without any adornment or colour), but the gherkin is one of his practice's best. It looks awesome from most angles and the fact that it's smaller at it's base than at it's middle is a great sight when you're at ground level. One thing I must give London is that it's use of quality materials to clad the buildings is second to none. They very rarely cost-cut.
By the way, great pics as always Mugley and I hope you had a great time here
Garmatt July 5th, 2006, 03:03 PM double post - sorry!
Lord_Bertrum July 6th, 2006, 08:09 AM Great Pics, I can't wait to get back and take a few to add to these.
Valeroso July 6th, 2006, 11:01 AM Wow, that first picture of London really glamorises it, and makes it seem so awesome! It's enough to make me want to travel there! I disagree though about the comment that London's traditional buildings blend badly with the skyline. Sure it's a chaos, but it's a really good-looking one at that! I might also add that Swss Re (aka The Gherkin) looks so photogenic and beautiful in practically all its pictures, and despite it's size, doesn't look as inappropriate as I once thought it would look in London. Fits in just fine!
Great pics anyway! It also makes me want to buy a new camera.
mugley July 7th, 2006, 02:12 PM Lloyds TSB

ryan79 July 11th, 2006, 02:09 PM Love that Lloyds TSB building. I think that coupled with Westminster tube station and you have a very futuristic style place.
CULWULLA July 12th, 2006, 01:42 AM great stuff. london looks like an interesting place.lots of old architecture trying to blend in with the new stuff.
cheers
mugley July 17th, 2006, 03:13 PM More public sculpture...
