View Full Version : Persistent forum trolls - how do moderators best deal with them?

I know I have to keep bringing this one up, but this complete turd DD is making life very difficult on SSC - having already graced us last month alone with about 20 different aliases (most of which thankfully only lasted less than 10 posts before be was removed without a trace), he has now racked up four new names so far this month - and its only two days young! First it was Jonathan Ross, and now Urban Spaceman is just his latest incarnation.

Now, I understand that some mods were recently given powers to locate and delete every single post of his aliases that have been repeatedly banned, but lately the likes of wjfox2002 and Tubeman aren't even around to do this anymore - despite my usual PMs tipping them off the very moment I spot a name which is obviously the guise of this wanker.

On Friday night I started a new thread about the forum being quiet which was inevitably gatecrashed by him, who also started a new thread of his own. In an attempt to deliberately get his own thread deleted, I posted an offending picture as a purely knee jerk gesture. This had the desired effect of getting the thread wiped. I also started a new thread addressed directly to him, and again, as I hoped, this one would divert his attention to posting there and thus be wiped off too eventually..... But this also meant my "Friday Night On The Forum" thread - one where some decent and otherwise non-inflammatory discussion was taking place about weekenders and the like - disappeared completely as well, rather than just the wanker's posts being removed as is usually the way the mods deal with the nuisance. This I was not happy about however.

Can some moderator, SOMEWHERE, please tell me how you are going to deal with this problem of this exceptionally tiresome moron constantly returning to this forum and persistently abusing the T&C, and yet also tell me why that, despite me PM-ing mods immediately I detect their presence on the board with another alias, you don't carry out the required remedial action as soon as you can do so?

Now this twat has returned and clocked up 8 posts under Urban Spaceman - and yet again he has appeared in one of my threads, knowing that the whole topic might get deleted cos he has "soiled" it - rather than the correct way of dealing with him which is to ZAP his posts off ANY thread they may appear on without actually removing the entire thread. It is becoming extremely annoying that no one is acting, and yet if I was given powers to delete posts I'm sure I would do a much more throrugh job of patrolling the forum (since I am on it usually for sustained periods every day and usually always check in on it every couple of hours up until almost 4 am in the morning in some cases.) and removing every single new post that I know obviously is the work of this retarded moron.

Somebody please give us some answers. :(

I think Martin G, should be made the Doka Dan Finder General, with special powers to ban him on sight.

I agree with you Martin, he is a complete muppet, the only solution is for everyone to ignore him and his stupid posts.

The sad thing is, when someone new posts, I'm automatically thinking who is it Doka Dan, ScouserDave etc, when in fact they may be a genuine newbie.

A few of us (Dinpy and Butterfield to name but two) have been thinking exactly the same way for ages now - almost resigning ourselves to the fact that any new forumer who appears is inevitably yet another DD alias. I mean, on the Brum forum, a Doctor Robot appeared in the Arena Central thread and is now on one of the Liverpool threads - having posted 16 replies already since registering today - but, going by the choice of name and the pic in his avatar, whose to say this one isn't yet another one of this wanker's new guises? Which of course, it probably is... just try and prove me wrong on this one, I bet you can't! :bash:

He had TWO simultaneously the other day - replying to himself even when, as Jonathan Ross, he started an "Open University" thread just to spout shite and then replied to himself with an :| smiley under yet another new name.
Pathetic or what? I really could do with being given some sort of deleting powers by Jan so I can minesweep this forum and I promise you I will not disappoint as I will always be here to pick out every single new DD post when I see it and, unlike other mods, will NOT delay to zap them off the face of the earth before people have a chance to reply or retaliate in kneejerk fashion (which is what I would otherwise do rather than ignore him). This will make it completely futile for him to post anything as it won't be on the forum for much longer anway.

The mods are well aware of this problem, and are constantly on the lookout for Doka Dan. You think we don't care, but we do.

You will note that I banned and pruned every one of Urban Spaceman's posts before you even created this thread (ditto for the "Jonathan Ross" account).

Maybe you're overreacting a bit, Martin?

Ahhh Will, you're alive. How come you don't accept PM's anymore? I tried to contact you last night (along with Tubey, who is probably away) about Jonathan Ross and also Gai Wrath, but now Urban Spaceman has been replaced with alas amith and jone (and who is Dctor Robot? I suspected it was him too - but better check the IPs and see if they match the various alternative ones this twat uses. I'm not overreacting more than usual - it's just that when I see his new usernames and know straight away who it is, I just wish I could zap the fucker there and then. That's why I boil over with instantaneous rage on many occasions. I'm fed up of this fucking wanker.

And I WAS aware that Urban Spaceman had been zapped and thus it was reassuring to see that someone had already spotted him and removed him. I am also aware that this is still going on regularly and mods know when to remove his posts immediately but I don't know which mods were actually doing this as on Friday night not only did his posts get rightfully deleted but also one entire thread that I started called "Forum on Fridays" which was completely binned even though Jonathan Ross appeared only towards the last couple of posts and I'd also posted replies to him at that point - and yet the whole thread was scrapped much to my disappointment as some non-inflammatory discussion was at least taking place there before HIS arrival..... :(

Has alas smith and jone been erased now?

I had only just PM'd Jan to ask him about how feasible it would be to instal a "minesweeper" mod assistant to fill in when the main mods might not necessarily be patrolling all through the evening and night....and I do tend to check in here very frequently during the entire course of the day (except the hours of 4am and 11am, when I'm catching up on my kip).

Instead of going to the effort of deleting him or his posts all of the time, why not simply send Tachy to Coventry. He'll carry on posting under that username he has at the time not having a clue that he is ghosted, so nobody apart from the mods can see his posts. He'll just end up talking crap to himself without reply until he gets bored and leaves.

I think that happened with his Salford Lad alias and it did work for a while - but he twigged in the end and gave up using that name and thus started resorting to his usual tiresome "celebrity" knock offs.

The problem is if he is coming through a big ISP such as AOL or NTL he will be coming through their cache most probably (which loads of other users will be using as well), so you can't even ban his IP address.

Martin, I don't think publicly naming possible offenders is such a good thing. I'm not sure about your current concern - d*** d** never posted in the Birmingham forum as far as I know, plus this new member doesn't seem to write in his style. I might be wrong though.

Careful you don't scare new people off!

I'm not so sure that that's Liverpolitan. Unlike certain personalities, i.e. Blabbernsmoke, Liverpolitan never had the tendency to create duplicate accounts; and seen as he hasn't been banned (just left in a huff, as far as I'm aware), I don't see why he'd start now.

Regardless, an ip check by moderation should confirm or deny this.
