RafflesCity July 2nd, 2006, 02:32 PM Lovely shots!
The flying flag adds another exciting dimension to the skyline!
Yah I figured NDP is just round the corner as fighter jets can be seen and heard over the city again, rehearsing for 9th August.
hyacinthus July 2nd, 2006, 02:46 PM If the flag is bigger, the impact will be greater. But, I supposed the helicopter / chinook can only handle flag of that dimension?
RafflesCity July 2nd, 2006, 02:57 PM probably...well the flag is quite big I suppose...

Think NDP 2007/8 is planned at Marina Bay on a floating platform. Should be spectacular.
For now, it's the last year at current National Stadium. So, bear with it. :)
JoSin July 3rd, 2006, 05:15 AM Didnt they say this year's national day parade will be on something like a floating platform at marina bay???

RafflesCity July 8th, 2006, 06:15 PM Nearly 50,000 Singaporeans among the first to watch this year's NDP

By Wong Siew Ying, Channel NewsAsia
SINGAPORE : The National Stadium came alive with the voices of some 50,000 Singaporeans who were among the first to catch this year's National Day Parade.
Many of them were there to support family members performing in the parade.
42-year-old Amelyn Ng is clapping to a different beat this time.
Having participated in four National Day Parades with the Singapore Soka Association, she is sitting out this year's show.
That is because Soka is putting out an all-male team.
But Amelyn says she is not disappointed and she has been cheering for her husband and two sons throughout their rehearsals, be it at home or the stadium.
"It's important to work as a team. But now that I'm not performing, I'm learning to support them. That made them very happy and proud of themselves," said Amelyn Ng.
Besides supporting family members out on the field, they were entertained by songs from the combined school choir and cheers led by some 400 motivators.
"I am bringing the kids here so that they can join in the fun. And my niece is performing today," said Jane Li, who was there to watch the rehearsal.
"I am proud to be here because this is the last year Singapore will celebrate National Day at the National Stadium. This is the first year my twin daughters are performing in the National Day Parade," said Julaidah Hamid.
On July 15, another group of Singaporeans will be able to enjoy the parade experience. Some 55,000 Primary 5 students and their teachers will be here at the National Stadium for the National Education Show.
Organisers say this year's show promises lots of colour. The show will kick off with the item called "Our City of Colours", performed by SOKA and the People's Association.
And like any other National Day Parade, the fireworks display is not to be missed.

RafflesCity July 19th, 2006, 05:29 PM Apache attack helicopters debut at NDP 2006 state-flag flypast
19 Jul 06
SINGAPORE: Expect to see roaring new aircraft making their debut at this year's National Day Parade.
24 Singapore Air Force pilots and crew will thrill the audience with a ballet in the sky.
The state-flag flypast has always been a traditional highlight, but this year, it has new companions.
Two Apache attack helicopters, recently acquired by the Singapore Airforce, will make their debut during the NDP flypast.
"Showcasing the apache for the first time during the National Day Parade is always an honour. It will create a sense of awe and excitement, because the aircraft in its various profiles does look really awesome," said LTC Sew Chun Liang, Apache Lead, State Flag Escort.
Other aerial performers will include the dashing F-16s with their split-second precision, and an explosive finish.
To get a short but spectacular effect in the air, technicians had to re-tweak fuel ejection this year and allow more diesel to flow through in-house designed pipes.
What audiences will see in the sky is thicker, more prominent white smoke - fitting for Singapore's 41st birthday.
Air Force technicians had specially designed and built the smoke generation system. Doing that saved $600,000 in costs and brought about other benefits.
"The knowledge we gained while doing the project; and the reaction of the audience when the bomb burst is performed, it's a proud moment that we have," said MAJ Danny Tan, Air Engineering Officer, 145 Squadron. - CNA /dt

The storey continues in the next thread.....:D
babystan03 July 29th, 2006, 04:22 PM A couple from their flat came out to see the fireworks (where I was standing). The husband happens to be a photographer and thought it'll be wasted since I did not have a black card. So he went back to his flat to take a magazine with black cover. Then by using bulb mode and black card, I finally got to know the tricks of getting nice fireworks pictures......here are some results.....:D
1. The first picture was not very succesful as the aperture was a bit too high....but I'll post nonetheless since it's memorable....:D

hyacinthus July 29th, 2006, 04:40 PM I saw the fireworks earlier at Kallang. Good that they waited for the smoke to disperse before starting the second batch. Generally, the shots were seen many times before... no special fireworks. not even the star-shaped ones.
@babystan
Still need to practise the coordination of blackcard and remote while watching the fireworks. Just wondering why at f/22 and using blackcard, the shots are overexposed?
btw, don't use NR at all.

babystan03 July 31st, 2006, 05:00 AM Anyway I am still in the dark of how to use the black card. :?
Actually not as mysterious as the colour suggest....
Using bulb mode, open shutter, cover the lens with the black card after a few burst(maybe 1 or 2 depending on the type of fireworks), then remove the card when new shots fired again then close shutter......
I believe there are tons of em out there
I've had very good encounters with very good Singaporeans during my recent visits there esp. Sg forumers ;)

babystan03 July 31st, 2006, 05:02 AM My camera only f2.8 to 8.
What settings should I use? :?
Many people use like f16, which I don't have.
Use F8, shutter speed 2-4 secs, lowest ISO, Auto white balance....:)
Still too bright then have to reduce exposure compensation by 1 or 2 stops....
redstone July 31st, 2006, 01:12 PM Thanks stan! :D

Triple fireworks treat planned for NDP 2006
By Rita Zahara, Channel NewsAsia
SINGAPORE : For the first time, a triple treat is in store for fans of fireworks at this year's National Day Parade.
Besides the traditional fireworks finale, you can also expect fireworks to go off midway and at the start of the show.
The show will start with a bang, with fireworks bursting into the sky as high as 80 metres from the rim of the stadium for about a minute.
The stadium will be transformed into a giant birthday cake with 41 candles, signifying the nation's 41st birthday.
As a safety precaution, the last few rows round the stadium will be cordoned off; Mountbatten Road and Nicoll Highway are also closed to traffic.
Brackets have been specially tailor made for this year's show; each of the 50 crates can take a load of up to 50 kilogrammes.
It takes some eight men to launch just one crate and each of them is unique, packed with individualised fireworks.
Said Major Jason Lee, Chairman Fireworks, NDP 2006, "We have many, many layers of safeguards. All the fireworks cues are actually coded into a digital code and it is actually overlaid onto the music that is being played during the show. In the event that our digital system fails, we have a manual voice back-up to ensure that we can still control the fireworks."
In the middle of the show, a minute of multi-coloured fireworks will burst out from the heart of the stadium during the Provost display.
About 20 props and mobile stages will be rigged with low-level fireworks, hitting as high as 20 metres.
Said Adam Tan, pyro-technician, NDP 2006, "We have quite a lot of mobile platforms, mobile staging. We needed to introduce a wireless remote firing to control the synchronised fireworks remotely. Therefore we have imported a German system, and this system works well in an environment of close proximity with a wireless device to about 500 metres."
The climax of the fireworks show is the three-minute grand finale.
The fireworks will be launched from the practice track, some 200 metres from the stadium.
They are expected to scale some 250 metres into the sky, providing a spectacular view even for those watching the fireworks away from the stadium. - CNA /ct

Marina Bay hotels packed for National Day festivities
By Rita Zahara, Channel NewsAsia
SINGAPORE : Come National Day, there may be no room at the inn - at least where hotels with a view of Marina Bay are concerned.
Singaporeans are willing to pay sky-high prices just to have a bird's eye view of the fireworks display.
Bookings began as early as last August and most hotels are competing to offer the best services in the house.
The view from the Ritz-Carlton Millenia comes with a S$241 price-tag, but the Lims say they are undeterred as celebrating in the month of August holds a special meaning for them.
Said Lim Soon, "We thought it would be a good time to take a break from work. In fact, we're celebrating our birthdays in the next two weeks, so we thought to have this celebration at this hotel. This hotel also holds some significance for us, because this is where I proposed to my wife in 2003."
The hotel's 260-rooms facing the harbour have been fully booked - even the most luxurious at S$6,000 a night.
The management expects better sales next year, when the National Day Parade will be held at Marina Bay.
Said Jennifer Cronin, executive assistant manager at Ritz-Carlton Millenia, "Our rooms are going to be at a premium; they always are every time we have a National Day parade, because the fireworks are spectacular. So for next year, we're going to be completely ready as soon as this year's celebration is over to start taking the bookings."
Other hotels in the area, like the Oriental Hotel, are also seeing a pick-up in demand.
Over at the Pan Pacific Hotel, six local photographers have put up some of their best works to showcase Singapore's cityscape.
However, there are also others who prefer to have their feet on the ground, but that comes with jostling with the crowd and waiting for hours in the heat to get a good spot.
The jury is still out over the question of where is the best place to watch the fireworks.
But whatever ambience you fancy, it is always an unforgettable experience catching the fireworks lighting up the night. - CNA /ct
