Seems like architecture in Wuhan is a mish-mash of different styles in the same building. The towers themselves look really nice, but the base really doesn't belong with the rest of the buiding.

I don't like cheap knock-oof architecture like this at all. Obviously the guy who designed this was using various US towers as his inspiration. Namely 191 Peachtree in Atlanta, and the Federal Courthouse in Cleveland.

6.0/10 only because it looks pretty good compared to alot of the crap getting built in the secondary Chinese cities.

A cheap rip-off of a postmodern classic:

And the other one is a copy of this:

China has potential, but there's too many of these cheap reproductions of other skyscrapers. C'mon China! You have such a unique style, you should use it to create unique buildings!

LOL You got to be kiddin' Jian Yin Building was completed in 1998, one year before Cleveland's Federal Courthouse Tower's construction started. The Cleveland building was completed in 2002, four years after the Wuhan tower.

Haha Those Americans. Most of your East Coast cities are lame copies of European cities. everytime I see Washington's Capitol on TV I have to laugh and tell my girlfriend: Look! it's the St. Paul's Cathedral. LOL

ShangHigh, most architectural critics would point out that, although the Capital was obviously influenced by St. Pauls, it is far from a replica. Only the domes are similar, and they are only similar, not copies. Plus, there's no need to be defensive anyway. You're right that many buildings in the US are basically replicas of ones in the old world. China has a lot of buildings that are cheap rip-offs, but it also has a lot of very unique and original buildings. I'm only stating my disapproval of this particular building. If someone in Chicago built a replica of Jin Mao or Petronas I would call it a cheap rip-off too.

dcb11
August 14th, 2003, 06:02 PM
Okay, we'll just have to agree to disagree. I feel that each tower in the the Jian Yin Tower looks like a model of a famous skyscraper that someone would make in high school. They look like the towers I posted, except they don't have the detailing of those buildings, and theres something flimsy about them that just screams "rip-off." But hey, if you like them, thats fine. The building is still better than some of the boring modernist blocks, and it does show that China has the potential to build some of the greatest skyscrapers, and indeed, they've already built some.

7.5 - there's a good contrast between glass and stone, the long strips of glass running up the towers adds to their height, and I appreciate the set backs...

BUT...well, maybe I was a bit too generous, because the two towers don't seem like they belong on the same building at all, I'm not that sure about either off the tops, and *WHAT*IN*THE*WORLD are those poor little corinthian columns and pediment doing on the entrance? THey look like they just wandered over there one day and decided to hang around, because they were so desperate to find a home- they have no relation to the rest of the building at all!

the taller tower looks pretty nice. although it obviously used the designs of some u.s. buildings, it blended those designs well together to give a decent tower that's not overran by unnecessary details.

the shorter tower and the base really diminish its merits though.

3/10 Semi circle thing and box. For some reason i hate most of the facades on Chinese skyscrapers, they look so flimsy and made of cheap material just like this one. And what is up with those roman columns on the base of the building? it is like the desingers just decided to add those on to the bottom to make them look like they were really important or something, please...

yet another lame copycat work from a Chinese architect with a mean case of multiple personality disorder.

again the devil is in the details.

piecemeal plagiarization doesn't work unless the plagiarizer is well-trained in identifying and blending compatible styles. But that would require a reasonably well-developed sense of good taste - something the Chinese don't have.

too bad.

Hmm the two towers are obviously in different styles, but I don't find them mismatched. Think of them as two separate buildings, then they work quite well. Construction quality seems to be there too, which is more than many other similar buildings can claim. The one big mismatch, not so much in style than in cladding, is the podium. Why not all white and blue??
