View Full Version : ROTTERDAM | The Red Apple | 128m | 38 fl | Com
SkyBridge July 3rd, 2006, 07:20 PM I couldn't find a thread about this project here yet, so I thought I'd share the good news myself. Construction has just started on not the highest, but certainly one of the most interesting residential/office buildings being constructed in The Netherlands right now.
THE RED APPLE
Official website: www.theredapple.nl
Architect: KCAP - www.kcap.nl
Finished: 2008
'The Red Apple' is a residential/office building made up of two blocks. The tower block with 128m will enhance the skyline on the side of the Meuse river, with future towers of 89m and 145m to be built only a block away and towers ranging from 70m to almost 110m already located in this part of the city. The lower part has a strange angle and reaches almost 60m - this part will host public space like shops and bars. The name 'The Red Apple' was picked because in this part of the Rotterdam harbour they used to ship apples to all over the world. Not to mention the colour of the building, which will be... :) You guessed it! Also the link to 'The Big Apple' is easily made seeing all the towers under construction and planned in this area and the city centre of Rotterdam. A world famous designer called Jan des Bouvries had a great part in the design and it shows!
A bridge connecting the harbour island with the shore has been approved and will be built soon.
Onto the photos!

Dr. Dubai July 3rd, 2006, 08:44 PM We already got the general contruction update topic, do you think we need this one?:)
Let's see what the others think. No or a few replies means don't continue. A lot of replies means "go on with this one";)
SkyBridge July 3rd, 2006, 09:11 PM True, but there's so many smaller projects going on in there that these big ones get lost. I think The Red Apple deserves it's own section because of it's architectural beauty and height. But indeed, let's see if any comments come in!
SkyBridge July 3rd, 2006, 09:19 PM Double post, of course that doesn't count ;)
Chad July 4th, 2006, 02:41 AM The color is great!!! Better than the ordinary whitey :)

ahmedjam July 4th, 2006, 03:07 PM well it is weird to have a red building standing in the skyline, but nice building love it :)
thryve July 4th, 2006, 07:08 PM Nice to see something differently coloured for a change.
And, it's very unique, Dutch architecture :) I think it will fit in perfectly there.

Amo urbem July 4th, 2006, 08:58 PM Any construction updates for this one?
Bertez July 4th, 2006, 09:04 PM Nice colour;);)
SkyBridge July 4th, 2006, 09:17 PM I think the fierce red colour will be amazing on this spot. On one side of the building there's a whole bunch of concrete towers which make the skyline dull from that point of view - not anymore after this is built! The blue/black building on the other side along with some other colourful towers will work greatly with The Red Apple too!
Latest update by Prologic by the way... Crane should arrive soon!

Eric Offereins July 6th, 2006, 07:17 PM it is really cool. This is by far my favourite project in Rotterdam
ZZ-II July 6th, 2006, 11:14 PM Nice Project
mrbrett July 7th, 2006, 01:14 AM I don't like it. In fact I hate it. The red is eh... that puke color is hideous. The green is nasty as well. The design is not my taste I guess.
Febo July 7th, 2006, 07:18 AM Sorry for being honest and for disagreing with the majority, but I find this building ugly, probably one of the worst modern projects I've seen.
TopperCity July 7th, 2006, 07:20 AM beautiful skyline!
GaryinSydney July 7th, 2006, 07:31 AM Yep, i agree with Febo et al, its not exactly Mooi!

Vanman July 7th, 2006, 08:06 AM I'm sorry but the first thought that came to my head after looking at this building was: ugly as sin!
Mosaic July 7th, 2006, 08:07 AM very colorful and outstanding in a way.
TopperCity July 7th, 2006, 08:07 AM I'm sorry but the first thought that came to my head after looking at this building was: ugly as sin!
cool idea to me
OtAkAw July 7th, 2006, 09:12 AM That is one "love it or hate it" type of building!
SkyBridge July 7th, 2006, 01:23 PM I think in real life this will be beautiful! On the renders it looks kinda plastic but they're going for a high quality facade here so all should be okay!
First walls are now being prepared:

Liwwadden July 23rd, 2006, 10:58 PM It like it! A lot! I like Rotterdams skyline so far, but to be honest, it's missing some colour & energy you see in Asian skyline. This will bring something. Unfortunatly it's not that high, so it will not be very domenating in the skyline. But nice, very nice. :)

SkyBridge August 12th, 2006, 11:53 AM Just went photoshopping and made this:
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/1224/redappleleuvehaventl0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Dr. Dubai August 12th, 2006, 12:04 PM This is little Hong Kong:D
Nice photoshop Skybridge. think about the "at least 145 meter Juffertower" that fits perfectly in the dense picture. This will be probably the most impressive part of Rotterdam. In a 3000 square meter plot there will be included the following towers:D: Harbour Village (85m + 70m), Scheepmakerstoren (88m), Waterstadtoren (109m), Red Apple (128m), Juffertower (145+m), and who knows what more:)
And the funny thing is, they're all residential towers.
SkyBridge August 12th, 2006, 03:29 PM Indeed, and one could also count the Coopvaert (104m) and studies for the Posthoornstraat (varying from 100 to 160m) as well as the buildings on the riverside that are all about 70m. Once everything is finished this will be a very cool place to live!
ZZ-II August 12th, 2006, 03:57 PM nice updates, i like the red color.
dannykylaw August 12th, 2006, 07:04 PM Great design.
Nout August 20th, 2006, 03:30 PM I really like this tower in shape, colour and name! Funky design!

BMXican December 20th, 2006, 11:56 PM I can't believe how cheap the apartments are!
the price for a square meter in a similar development (although not as tall as this one) in frankfurt would be 4 times as high. no wonder highrise living in rotterdam is so popular. great project!
Marco Bruno December 21st, 2006, 01:04 AM I can't believe how cheap the apartments are!
cheap indeed! for example in Portugal, (Lisbon) it would be much more expensive, minimum of 250.000/300.000
CityLife December 23rd, 2006, 11:50 AM Everytime I see the real estate prices in Rotterdam I'm also surprised about the very low prices of appartments in the center of Rotterdam.

Skyscrapercitizen December 25th, 2006, 01:49 AM The pent house in Pan Peninsula in London Docklands was sold for over £7 million pounds, which is about 11-12 million euro's! much better value in Holland.
There is no big market for expensive apartments in Rotterdam, but there are expensive ones for sure. The most expensive one yet is the top penthouse in Montevideo which is €2,5 million. Some same price apartments are there in lowrises with views on the river. Such apartments have about 300m².
Prices in Rotterdam will rise when density and diversity in the city grow further. Apartments in this range of prices (200.000 to 300.000) are selling very well so many projects with this type of apartment is UC now bringing that much needed density to our downtown.

Sentient Seas August 13th, 2007, 09:34 AM That red color just ruins it.
eyrie August 14th, 2007, 09:27 AM I love this building and I think that red colour will give a much needed splash of colour to an otherwise grey climate
eyrie August 14th, 2007, 09:31 AM ...and is it just me or does Rotterdam look like a Japanese city
SkyBridge August 14th, 2007, 10:52 AM ^ In some ways, yes. Due to the WW II bombing most of the buildings in the city centre date from the same period as buildings in for example Tokyo. However, right from the edges of the centre (and also some parts within) the historic buildings take over which gives a great contrast and makes it very much unlike Tokyo (different architectural style).
Insane alex August 16th, 2007, 11:53 AM Great progress!

SkyBridge August 17th, 2007, 02:04 AM ^ Under construction as well - rising above ground level as we speak!
Very neat tower if you ask me :)
Illegal_Alien August 17th, 2007, 11:32 AM ^^ Bit small though; 89 meters with spire.

http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/252/dscf19527tt.jpg
Racingfreak August 20th, 2007, 11:54 AM ^^
Lol but the Red Apple is much higher then that building:banana:
Maciu_PL August 20th, 2007, 12:34 PM Not very much...:|
Momo1435 August 20th, 2007, 12:48 PM That building in Poznan is only 81 meters, not counting the antenna.
And only the color could maybe be the same, we don't know the final shade of red that the Red Apple will get. Besides that this tower has horizontal red stripes while the Red Apple will have vertical red stripes.
Boogie August 20th, 2007, 01:10 PM Yes, of course, but I wrote that the tower in Poznan is some like the tower in Rotterdam, not the same. Rotterdam's tower will be taller than The Poznań University of Economics, but our tower is 28 years old.
Eric Offereins August 20th, 2007, 10:39 PM ^^ No offense meant, but I prefer our Red Apple ;)
Boogie August 21st, 2007, 01:41 PM Of course not. Rotterdam's Red Apple will be taller and younger than Poznan's one and Your, so Your opinion is normal.
DAMN I m good August 21st, 2007, 02:17 PM I think this tower will perfectly fit with Rotterdam this city has a lot of strange shaped towers or strange colored towers
Ramses August 21st, 2007, 04:18 PM Except for the colour i don't see any similarities between the Poznan tower and Red Apple. :dunno:
Nice updates, this tower could become one of the best new buildings in Rotterdam in ages.

Elektro-X August 24th, 2007, 01:12 PM Sorry, but I also hardly see any similarities in these 2 buildings except for the red colour of the exterior. There aren't many red towers in the world and maybe therefore you compared these two, but they're totally different (design, cladding, height).

Boogie August 24th, 2007, 01:41 PM Yes, in the world there aren't many red towers and that's the reason I think these towers are some similar.
