In the first Copenhagen shot, what happened to the large building in the upper left? I think it was torn down ;)

Chances are it may have been too old or poor consructed, or maybe even a fire... it's build on what was a park/lake area from the old defenses, so the ground may have started sinking or something.. I can't find any information about it... but I certainly think it looked better then compared to we have today :(

I am not sure when, but I believe during the 70's-80's. The transformation is remarkable, part 2 of the raconstruction of Beirut begun 2 years ago, it will be finished in 2025 (phase 2 is mostly high rises right now :), so this will be just great)

The Beirut pictures are fascinating.

Why were there so few paved streets back then?

Nadini
July 6th, 2006, 11:38 PM
^^ they were paved before the war but during the 15 years of wars, I don't think they will bother repaving it....

I'm also happy to announce that these new highrises are built or designed by many countries. If you didn't know, Beirut is known as the Mother of all cities in the world due to the first Roman Law School and the hub of all cultures, the motherland of the Phoenicians where they lived there (they invented the alphabets and the boats, they were the first sailors). There is a new project announced that many countries (Canada, Poland, U.S.A, Italy, Greece, Japan, China etc..) will build highrises and lowrises, in a specific district, for thanking the achievement the capital has done and for debuting the evolution of the world (some 9000 years ago). Sounds exciting and I can't wait to see all the highrises.

This is a wonderful idea. I'm sure there will be plenty of competition to have the best-designed buildings. And in the long run, this should make a fascinating patchwork of architectural styles. One question: which companies from each nation are involved in this project?

I would never have known that Beirut had developed in such an interesting way. Nice thread!

Great thread... The Beirut, Warsaw and Rotterdam pics are heartening and depressing in equal measure... Hong Kong's growth is simply staggering.

Canaletto's London (1747):

http://www.abcgallery.com/C/canaletto/canaletto31.JPG

^
This view is from Richmond House... I guess it was roughly at the southern end of the Palace of Westminster

The modern view... 'Zoomed in', I couldn't find a view recreating the Canaletto painting

The biggest change in the Pearl River Delta region by far is Shenzhen. It was all farmland until the 1980s.

Hong Kong's growth was not as much due to population but rather an economic shift. The growth spurt began with manufacturing and shifted to services, which propelled skyscraper construction in the 1990s.

Very true about Shenzhen. But I think the major skyscraper construction started during the 1980s

There was nothing in Shenzhen in the 1960s. Shenzhen became a special economic zone in the 1980s, but the skyscraper boom came in the 1990s.

There were already skyscrapers in Shenzhen even during the 1980s but were not as tall compared to today

The boom came with Shun Hing Square in the mid 1990s. Then a lot more came up in the late 1990s as the skyscrapers spread west to the financial district in Futian.

Beirut isn't being destroyed right now. Only parts of the city are being bombed, and the damage is not widespread. I don't think it will be as bad as during the civil war.

No, but if you look through the thread you will see it has evolved to include a lot of historic photos of the different cities. Sorry, technically I broke the rules of the thread because I love that old fire picture so much! ;) The pic I showed was from the second great fire in Toronto, in 1904. The first was mid 1840's.

That will depend on the length and intensity of the war, won't it? Already there has been destruction in central Beiruit, and the economy is suffering severely. The promise to "turn back the clock 20 years" will be more accurate with each passing day. At the very least, the reconstruction of the city is going to be put at an indefinite standstill with all of the economic and infrastructural damage it has suffered.

WOW, I'm in love with that gold pic of the Empire State Building. I've been looking for new wallpaper.

It's also gut-wrenching to look at those Beirut pictures from before and after. All politics aside, it just makes you want to cry seeing what the civilians of that country had to put up with and how far they've gone at rebuilding. Then to turn on the news today... I saw a lot of interviews with them on TV where they were just in shock and at a total loss of words that this is happening to them again. I can't imagine how disheartening it would be to live through that and assume fate would never make you re-live the horror of seeing your homeland reduced to ruin. Hopefully they put a stop to all this soon one way or another. I can't imagine what this will do to their economy.

Cool pix of HK in 1912, Skybean! Wouldn't it be amazing to go back in time and see it as it was then? I would LOVE to. It is remarkable the change in 100 years!

Manhattan is slowly swallowing itself up through each era. ;)

Correction, central Beirut was not hit, by that they meant the Achrafiyeh district (pre dominant Christian) or the port of Beirut. I was in central Beirut yesterday and it was more then fine. I don't think they dare to bomb the newly built downtown. They are bombing the south of Beirut (the slums of Beirut) and South of Lebanon. I just hope they dont bomb the central otherwise many will turn against them.

Montreal 1990
230 buildings

Montreal 2006
538 buildings

Montreal 2009
about 600 buildings will be completed

That's a major improvment. From 230 to 600

Birmingham was a concrete jungle in the 1960s. It still holds that image in peoples heads but now it is changing so much. Very little of its 60s past remains. Just New Street Station (god forbid) and Central Library (which is more 70s).
