so far this is a very oddly scheduled construction as half of the building is under construction but half of it still has the old buildings on it which are currently being demolished.

hella good
July 11th, 2006, 07:59 PM
indeed it is, although i will try to explain the status of the site clearley as it is not conventional...

the site of v2 still has old factory buildings on it, but these are being demolished. at the same time the bit of the site that is empty has started construction and is up to the first floor.

i find this all quite odd

Double posted on the Crane Count thread:

On my way through town tonight it looked very much like they were dismantling the crane on Velocity 2. Could be wrong as I was driving so couldn't look properly, but certainly looked to be coming down.

March 6th, 2007, 10:40 PM
well, i know that the first building of v3 is topped out, but v2 isnt. so i dont think they would dismantle it yet. especially because there is still half of the complex to finish

SheffCity
March 6th, 2007, 10:47 PM
IF it was coming down (I will check in the morning as I drive past), it was definately the crane on the right (looking from the front), which is/was I assume on the V2 site.

Maybe they were relocating it to another part of the site.

Q for the designers out there.

Bit odd using a steel beam in a Concrete framed building.
Concrete designers always saying about superior fire protection, so why not cast it in to concrete beam ? External fire protection will be vulnerable to damage to fire cladding or paint ?
I connection of steel / Concrete rigid (moment) or a Pin ?

paulmat
July 31st, 2007, 12:15 AM
It might be due to (as has been said before), steel being stronger than concrete at supporting shear forces. I can't see quite what's going on, but it looks to me asthough they've had to move the concrete pillar to the side. If this is the case, a concrete beam wouldn't be strong enough to support all the weight from the building above and move it across to another pillar.

(Dunno if that makes sense, but id did to me :))

Flanges only look about 20mm thick, colunm caps look thicker say 25mm.
Is there a column hiding behind the Hoarding, as in the other pic thers a web stiffner to the lhs of the 1st floor middle column ?

Just looks a Bodge, No fineness of detail, by putting a Edge beam on the slab spanning to adjacent bays the load would be transfered better!

Yeah, saw this glass box from Shalesmoor the other day. very nice!

I still think Velocity made two fatal reversals at the Velocity Village.
- First, as you go down Tenter Street and look up a V1, you see a large wing, then a large step up, and then a smaller step. IMHO, it should have been a small step and then a larger step (creating a concave curve, rather than a convex one) so the tower looked more prominent.
- Second, they built V2 and V3 on top of the hill, and V1 at the bottom, so it flattens out the roofline of the whole development (a la Park Hill Flats). They ought to have built V1 on top on the hill, by the church, so it stood out more prominently. This would have made it a true landmark for the St Vincents Quarter (it would have been around 15-20 metres above Metier AOD for the same AGL height).

the flats over the road from the marriott are nowhere near the hospital. the site you're talking about used to be another hotel (a really big house) with large grounds. they built a whole load of new houses and apartments in the grounds and split the house into flats. looks pretty decent and it's a great location. good move!

^^It's not as simple as the council asking for a redesign. They've already given permission for this, so they can't revoke that unless they spend a LOT of money through the courts.

However I think what could happen is another developer buys the site and wants something different to what there is, so asks for a redesign.

Can a council ever have a legally valid reason for revoking planning permission once it has been granted?
