Réunion is an island and overseas département (département d'outre-mer, or DOM) of France, located in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, about 200 km southwest of Mauritius. Like the other DOMs, Réunion is also one of the 26 régions of France with much the same status as those situated on the European mainland. As part of France, Réunion is part of the European Union, and thus the currency used is the euro.

Reunion contains most of the same ethnic populations as Mauritius - Malabars or Tamil, Indians, Vietnamese, African, Malagasy, Chinese and French - but in different proportions. Creoles, of African and Malagasy origin, make up the majority. Whites make up approximately one-quarter of the population, Indians make up 21% and people of Chinese or Vietnamese ancestry most of the remainder.

The predominant religion is Roman Catholicism (86% of the population in 1995), with Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism also represented.

This island has big congestion problem ( There is no train. Car is the only mean of transport )

Thanks for showing us this island. Any more pics of the beaches? How come this island is not as popular as neighbouring Mauritius?

Reunion island is quite popular, especilly by french and english tourists.
The biggest problem of the Reunion is the price,
The airways prices are increadible, it is way less expensive to go USA than in Reunion Island.
Interresting cities like St Denis or St Gilles are some of most expensive of France. :nuts:

That's right Mauritus is popular even in Reunion, there many soap opera from Mauritus in the local TV.
Anyway this departement is booming

I have many other pictures of the island if you are interresting but these are quite old because I took them in 2001 - 2002 when I lived in this island.

Not at all, I am from Central France and my whole familly (that i know) live in southeastern France but since I mixed race that look asian, black and white, many people think that I come from Reunion Island.

Second of all, I'd like to ask you for help. A friend of mine passed me a mix of reunion island's music, it's in french but mixed, something like creole. I'd lke to know the name of the singers and the titles of the songs, it sounds traditional but modern, where could I find this info?.....
