Totally lost as to whats happening in the Olympic world? Here's a quick runthrough

Madrid City Council Unanimously Approves 2016 Olympic Bid
7/06/06 @ 1:32 pm ET

Yes madrid are going at it again in 2016, and are looking for success this time around. Will the IOC send the games back to europe? Madrid bagged a suprising 33 votes for 2012,apart from placing second to parss in the technical shortlist and are sure to make the shortlist again for 2016

Monterrey 2016 Officials Present Bid Plan To Mexican Olympic Committee
7/06/06 @ 1:29 pm ET

Monterrey? Stupid peoples. Its in Mexico and they are currently discussing and planning to bid for the 2016 Games. Mexico City has already hosted the games back in the 70's.

Winter Olympic Games 2014

What you should know. Almaty, borjomi, Sochi, Sofia, Pyeong Chang, Salzburg applied to bid for the 2014 games. Only sochi, salzburg and pyeong were shortlisted. Salzburg are seen as early favourites but pyeong change is my fave.

Tokyo, Fukuoka – Two Distinct 2016 Olympic Bids
7/04/06 @ 8:43 am ET

Tokyo and Fukuoka are going head to head. One of these cities will be chosen in August as Japans chosen city to bid for the 2016 games. Tokyo are clear favourites but Fukuoka may pull a suprise with a more compact venue plan.

Other random stuff

Durban mentioned possibly bidding for the 2014 CWG, eventhough its 1. too late 2. south africa has already indicated we are officially supporting abuja

Durban will also possibly bid for the 2016 games. Highly unlikely though considering the decision will be made in 2009. One year before the world cup.

London 2012 have declared the costs of the games are rising...uhm duh..its called inflation. Beijing has huge issues with water pollution, is currently experiencing this major drought and has lotsa rats..so yeah.

The whole Olympic idea doesnt sound viable anymore. It seems to be more of a financial burden on the particualr city than anything else. Only rich, first world countries with all the infrastructure already in place and money to blow, can afford this glamorous event. Having said that, the soccer world cup could make it happen for an SA city.

there is huge debate about that. the glamour cities were shorlisted in 2012 with rio left out. FIFA made a strategic choice to go to africa in 2010. The IOC will also make that decision and possibly scrap the entire voting system as early as 2020. If the IOC calls then they should be willing to increase the funding they give to the host city and work more closely with the host city if its a new frontier city.

Possible South African Olympic bid cities should take note of the 2016 race in preparation for a possible 2020 bid. Specifically durban who have made their intention clear, and other possibilities in joburg and cape town.

Fukuoka Mayor Criticizes Tokyo’s 2016 Summer Games Bid
Posted 12:17 pm ET (GamesBids.com)

Japan’s Olympic Committee (JOC) will decide August 30 on which candidate will represent Japan in its bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games – Tokyo or Fukuoka. In reports being compiled by the JOC, Tokyo comes out on top, reports the Asahi Shimbun, mainly due to the metropolitan government’s financial resources and the fact that it has already secured land on which the main stadium and athletes’ accommodation will be built.

But at a hastily called news conference Fukuoka Mayor Hirotaro Yamasaki not only criticized Tokyo’s bid plan but also spoke out against Tokyo Governor Shintara Ishihara, whose often controversial remarks could, he argued, impede cooperation with other Asian nations when it cam to organizing the event.

The newspaper reports that Yamasaki said, “Tokyo has so many problems (in regard to hosting the Olympic Games), but they have not been revealed (to the public) yet”.

The Tokyo metropolitan government estimates it would have to put up about 50 billion yen toward funding the cost of new facilities since it expects the central government will foot the bill for the main stadium. It is about half the amount Fukuoka is expected to commit to a bid. Sources say the fact that Tokyo has sufficient funds to bid for the Games has made a good impression on the JOB.

Yamasaki said Tokyo had many practical disadvantages compared to Fukuoka, including traffic congestion, which might impede athletes’ access to the competition sites.

He said the only way that Tokyo could get around these problems would be to “hold the Olympic Games in a situation similar to martial law”.

He also dismissed Tokyo’s financial estimate for construction of the main stadium as “unrealistic. I wonder if the Tokyo metropolitan government has talked over the issue with the central government”, he said.

The JOC’s report is due to be sent to a 55-member selection committee on Wednesday.

New Stadium Is Investment For Cape Town 2020 Bid
Posted 11:46 am ET (GamesBids.com)

Cape Town has been considering a bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games for some time but now there’s a report that a planned 2010 soccer World Cup stadium must be multipurpose to boost Cape Town’s 2020 Olympic bid.

Janine Myburgh, president of the Chamber of Commerce, said Wednesday of the proposed stadium “it cannot be justified if it is only to prove a few thousand extra seats…. It needs to be built as a multipurpose stadium that constitutes a major investment in Cape Town’s bid to host the Olympic Games in 2020”.

She added, “we hope the design team will be far-sighted in their planning as it is not just 2010, but about another sporting event, the Olympic Games”.

Rio de Janeiro will bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) said on Friday.

COB president Carlos Arthur Nuzman announced the decision after a meeting of the organisation.

Rio made failed bids to host the 2004 and 2012 games and was eliminated in the first round of voting on each occasion.

Brasilia was a candidate for the 2000 Games but withdrew before the vote.

Japan have named Tokyo as their candidate while India, Spain, the United States and Italy have also expressed interest.

that's what I'm talking about. We (Cape Town and Durban) would be in a much stronger position to host an Olympics then. What about a joined CT-Durban bid? Athletics in CT; aquatic stuff in Durban's warmer waters?

Canoe/Kayaking and Rowing events are held at a regatta centre which any of the south africa cities would need to build if they were to bid for the games, so the water temperature is not an issue as such, where water temperature would be important would be during the triathlon events, however it consists of three sports, athletics, cycling and the swimming part, and certainly the cycling and athletics backdrops around chapmans peak and hout bay etc, would make a fitting olympic vision.

Surfing is not currently an Olympic sport although I believe it should be, it could also mean more medals for south africa.

A Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg bid would be interesting and quite fascinating in comparison to the bids back in 1997, i'd love to see what durban would plan around their olympic park, certainly a durban bid would stronger after 2010,cape town has been however been mentioned in olympic circles.

SA scoops bid for coveted Swimming Champs

September 11 2006 at 11:23AM

South Africa has pulled off a major coup by winning the bid to host the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) Swimming World Championships in Durban in December, bringing the second biggest championships in Paralympic sport to these shores.

A total of 600 swimmers and 265 officials from 60 countries will arrive in Durban for the December 2-8 championships which take place every four years and are second only to the IPC Athletics World Championships in size and prestige.

"The Swimming World Championships are certainly one of the most popular events within the IPC, and this is easily the biggest Paralympic event South Africa has ever hosted," said Alison Burchell, General Manager of Disability Sport South Africa.

The championships will attract the biggest names in the sport, including South Africa's Paralympics stars Natalie du Toit, Tadhg Slattery.

The last championships were held in Argentina in 2002, where South Africa finished 19th out of 53 countries with three gold and two silver medals.

"This is a tremendous honour for us because we were up against countries like Wales and France in the bidding process, both of whom were very determined to win this bid," said Burchell.

The successful bid was as a result of a strong partnership between Disability Sport South Africa, Swimming South Africa, the eThekwini Municipality and main sponsor Telkom.

The championships will take place at the King's Park Aquatic Centre in Durban, which has also successfully hosted the Fina Swimming World Cup in the past.

The open water events will take place at the nearby Haselmere Dam in Hillcrest.

As the main sponsor of the championships, Telkom has expressed its delight at being associated with another major international swimming event.

"Our association with the Fina Swimming World Cup has brought the world's top able-bodied swimmers to South Africa, and we are delighted that we can now say the same for the IPC World Swimming Championships," said Braam Wessels of the sponsors.

"As a Paralympics sponsor we take great pride in being associated with an event that will expose our top paralympic swimmers to vital international competition.

"This will also again prove we are more than capable of hosting major international sporting events as we move closer to the 2010 World Cup." - Sapa
