Los BAÑOS - SCIENCE AND NATURE CITY OF THE PHILIPPINES
errr... well, the Science and Nature City of Los Baños (LB) is currently enjoying a booming era after the slump in sometime in 1997 (probably due to the asian financial crisis?)

i'm not sure about this, but i think the current tallest structure is the islacom (or is it a part of globe network already?) cellsite in batong malaki, not sure about the height though...

pero the tallest concrete structure? yung rizal centennary memorial carillon, designed by Leandro Locsin, sa UPLB, dunno about its height also.... there was a time (about a year and a half ago) nag jog ako and my route takes me to the carillon, parang nasa hong kong ako kasi may mga chinese (or vetnamese) nationals na nag tai-chi doon.... every morning sila eh... di ko alam kung meron pa rin ngayon...

malls? small malls only....
(inclusive of commercial centers/supermarket):

-South Supermarket (1990's) - basta malaking supermarket yun...

-Vega Centre (1998) - Mostly Dining Establishments/Restaurants/Fastfood chains

-Olivarez Plaza (1999? or 98?) - i dunno if its still owned by vice gov olivarez, rumors here and there... hehe

-Robinsons Town Mall (2001? i've forgotten...) - Super downsized robinsons place, wanna know why? because yung mga ahente (middlemen) between ng lot owners and robinsons, doubled the price of the piece (set by lot owners) of land that robinsons was interested to buy....so robinsons said no... hehehe

there are rumors of SM LB (stories consistent of its location somewhere in Maahas, near Bay).... much more now that SM Calamba will not be built (accdg. to Calambeños)... however, some say that the lot under negotiation is actually in Bay (the closed ECCO-ASIA Plant Site)... dunno...

Other Large Structures worth noting:

-APEC Center for Technology Exchange and Training for Small and Medium Enterprises (ACTETSME), Science Park, UPLB
-UPLB Main Library, Nat'l Arts Center, D.L. Umali Hall (Auditorium) and SEARCA Int'l Residence (all designed by Leandro Locsin)
-NCAS in UPLB
-New EE/CEAT Building in UPLB
-Anest Tower, and LB Doctors Hospital
-UP Open University Headquarters
- i dunno if that building is PCARRD bldg. but its somewhere in that place often referred as PCARRD, it has a very large lobby with blue colored glass facade, its concrete parts of the facade painted light golden yellow (reminded me of Shangrila Plaza)

-and the latest and most modern addition would be the Trace College Campus in Los Baños, boasting with very modern facilities (including the Trace Suites and Trace Aqua Sports Complex and Museum, host to the SEAGames Aquatics 2005)

-well, all this yaddah yaddah, but i'm sorry, i dont have pics here... lemme search the net first.... if you could find some before i could post them, then i'm inviting you to post them too...

NICE thread @ vince.
I missed the place a lot! Unfortunately, I didn't have any decent cam back in college.
Your mentioning of PCARRD reminds me of DOST Region V office near the PCARRD office. Being on the slope of Mt Makiling, these two structures enjoy a breathtaking view of Laguna and Laguna de Bay plus some part of Metro Manila. You could see Metro Manila skyline from the place.

Hay...nostalgic! Di niyo alam ang memory ng place na yan sa akin at sa aking mga kaibigan. :( :) Being DOST scholars, we have to visit the place regularly to submit a photocopy of our grades for the sem. (Pacenciya na off topic)...And sometimes, to reimburse our tickets. I remember myself walking that kilometer long (mas mahaba pa ata) stretch from the provincial road to DOST office to complete the process.

actually, according to my sister, LB is already qualified to be a city, just like sta. rosa and san pedro. only the mayor didn't go for it yet....

vince_rilian
June 11th, 2006, 03:29 PM
fyi, hehehe, the status of los baños as a city is quite disputed...

On August 7, 2000, Los Baños was declared as a "Special Science and Nature City of the Philippines" through Presidential Proclamation No. 349 in recognition as a center for science and technology in the development of agriculture and preservation of the environment.

through this proclamation, los baños can be classified as a special city.... however, its government still operates as a municipality, and officially, it is still a municipality.... @ritche's sister is right, LB is already over qualified to be a city by itself, however, we residents and maybe even mayor perez and councilors realize that there's not much need to be a chartered city through congress & plebiscite YET and i think it would be better for now for LB to remain a municipality, while enjoying this boom in infrastructure as the low taxes associated with municipalities would be attractive to investors...

^^ i thought munoz was a science city.

vince_rilian
June 12th, 2006, 07:51 AM
yup, munoz is a science city, only that it is a chartered city compared to LB... i dunno why Estrada made two science cities... in just a year (or was it two years....)

i checked wikipedia and other googled pages, it turns out LB is more populous and has more scientific institutions than Muñoz... only that LB didn't take the opportunity to be a full fledged chartered city...

vince_rilian

dunno about the price, well, last SEAGames, apart from the ticket for access to the aquatics complex, theres also the ticket for entering the campus... pinoy nga naman talaga oh... hehehe... but anyway, that Php 20.00 ticket (or was that 10?) is worth it since they really have great facilities... only that the space is a little crammed.

are those pics recent? i dunno... if thats the most 'modern' one in the philippines... looks kinda dodgey to me. they should construc like a Manila Sports and Aquatic Centre! lol like MSAC here in melbourne (Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre lol) something world class!

well, actually, nope, thats not the most recent pic, it was taken during the later part of the construction... in fact its not the best pic of the aquatic center... definitely its world class coz and the most modern in the philippines, the latest aquatic center to be constructed...it has been praised by athletes, coaches and officials during the SEAGames...(even former athens olympics officials who visited for the SEAGames) though its not that large...

just a piece of trivia: the athens olympics wasn't able to put up roofing for the aquatic center... here in LB, the aquatic center has at least some roofing for the audience....only that it has a very small capacity

The outdoor pool was the subject of significant controversy during the run-up to the Olympic games. A roof that was intended to shield the swimmers from the blazing Athens sun had to be scrapped, leaving the athletes and most of the fans without shade during the events;

oz.fil
June 16th, 2006, 05:34 PM
really? how cool! but can anyone post recent pics please! i really want to see it but im stuck here in OZ! lol, when was it constructed by the way?

vince_rilian
June 16th, 2006, 05:49 PM
constructed within 1 year... from late 2004 to 2005 (right before seagames) if i'm not mistaken... actually, construction was only noticeable from the highway about 6 months prior to the SEAGames... pretty fast eyy? here's the scoop:

the owner of TRACE College is the president of PAGCOR (philippine amusement and gaming corporation) the government's (and phil's only) casino operator... he was somehow included in allegations of corruption w/ the president....regarding campaign funds...

if you'll visit LB, youll notice a lot of public works funded by PAGCOR, especially the 'Pailaw ni Gloria' street lamps (Pailaw ni Gloria: Street Lighting Program by Pres. Gloria Arroyo)...

sorry if i don't have more recent pics of Trace Aquatic Center... hehehe... i do hope that one of my friends would watch the Phil.Olympic Fest this next two weeks and then take pictures of the Aqua Center....

REALLY? i would be more delighted if it was built inside the campus para mas malawak sana. kaso nga lang, i wonder where inside the campus would this be built. the Baker Hall area is already jampacked with courts plus there already exists an Olympic size pool there.

Hey guys, do you have an idea how much are the tickets worth?

kc5169
June 17th, 2006, 10:32 AM
I think that Los Banos has a serious traffic and pollution issue. It's worse than manila. But......... UP los banos is the nicest i have ever seen in the philippines. And the city hall is very nice as well.

vince_rilian
June 17th, 2006, 10:50 AM
^ yah, traffic and pollution are serious problems here, thats because LB, specifically crossing/junction is a major vehicular bottleneck... its the only major road (of shortest path) connecting eastern laguna to the west of laguna....

wait, our traffic&pollution problem is less than that of calamba city....

city hall? what city hall? los baños only has a ver small/old municipal hall, now i understand, you must be talking about calamba city after all...the Calamba city hall, it is supposedly the most modern city hall in the philippines, calamba being declared capital of calabarzon (see wikipedia)...

______________

oh! yeah! the aquatic center was planned to be located at UPLB, by the way, the pool at baker hall is only half olympic size, the olympic size pools are located at the botanical gardens and at pook ni maria makiling...why was the aquatic center moved to trace???

see, the official owner of trace college is the president of PAGCOR, the casino arm of the gov't... and that person was involved in the campaign corruption allegations to gloria arroyo... i think this is where some people say arroyo is a co-owner of trace... and so maybe that is why the aquatic center was moved to trace. with regards to space, there's extra large space available for an aquatic center (larger than the area at trace) located beside the UPLB gymnasium under construction (which has taken ... uhh... years, hopefully less than a decade, to build)

dont worry, we're pushing to have a track and field stadium here in UPLB, cojuangco is interested on funding it, but only if he sees that UPLB deserves it by having top quality track and field athletes (asa pa todo-ganahan kami, ni scholarship hindi nga makapagbigay sa amin, right now, we do it for the love of the game)

Francis20
June 17th, 2006, 01:50 PM
so LB's pool is only half the size? i just read somewhere that it's olympic sized.
must have misread it.

@ vince rilian, i was asking how much is the price of the ticket since you are advertizing the event. you must have an idea how much is it worth? :)

IMO, they should put a flyover at the los banos intersection going to manila...tsk, tsk, and many people were talking about putting that much-needed flyover many years back.

UP Los banos has the largest campus in the whole world...i've read that many years back in the inquirer. UPLB campus includes research centers such as IRRI, IPB, Biotech, gov't research centers, even the jamboree site. if UPLB people think of creative ways to use its lands, I think there won't be much problem raising money for those facilities...

BTW, Danding as well as Migz Zubiri are UPLB alumni...

"BTW, Danding as well as Migz Zubiri are UPLB alumni..."

I thought Danding Cojuangco graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Did he take another degree? or Master?

vince_rilian
June 19th, 2006, 07:38 AM
owwws? migz zubiri? UPLB alumnus? maybe thats why he was the one pushing for the energy independence bill, hehehe, UPLB alumni are environment oriented....hehehe

but cojuangco? also from UPLB? if thats true, then the more reason for him to fund the stadium that was informally proposed to him by our DHK Chair....

i dont think a flyover would be a great idea as it would spoil the look of the place... maybe trying to convert the intersection into a roundabout/rotunda (as in a large rotunda) would be a better idea.... but what would be a better alternative is to go on with the plan of constructing the laguna lake coastal road... as i have said in a previos post, only one major road connects east laguna to west laguna... and that passes through crossing Calamba and LB, if they could provide an alternative route, that would greatly decrease the volume of traffic passing thru these bottlenecks.

YES, I checked the program and it says Olypic Night - June 24. There will be some more competitions the following day. Do you have any idea how long would the fireworks take? If it's better than the Pyro Olympics at Esplanade, then it's worth going there. :D

I was not able to take good shots of ULPB last weekend. Might return there next weekends. I wanna see the new structure where the Chem Bldg used to stand, plus the new EE Bldg, and maybe visit the dairy farm! hehe...

vince_rilian
June 20th, 2006, 04:47 PM
ay, wag ka umasa sa chem building... di maganda! hehehe.... yung EE Building, okay na okay, pero kapag ininspect mo in detail may mga flaws ka na mapapansin....

about the fireworks, nung seagames kasi, mahaba yung duration ng fireworks display noon, umabot ng around 30 minutes nung closing ceremonies sa trace eh.... bale 3 nights sila nagpafireworks noon, nung opening sa trace, around 20 minutes ata, nung last day of games (the day before closing sa trace) maikli lang, mga 5 minutes lang, then all out na nung closing....

nung opening ngayong olympic festival, naka 2 nights na sila, nung June 15, mga 5 minutes din, then June 16, opening ceremonies, di ko napansin kung mga 15-25 minutes yun.... kasi paunti unti muna eh, then frequency progresses as the climax approaches.... so i would expect a more grand fireworks display at the Olympic night, siguro around 30 minutes din, but not as grand tulad nung SEAGames...

Laguna is a province of the Philippines found in the CALABARZON region in Luzon. Its capital is Santa Cruz and the province is located southeast of Metro Manila, south of the province of Rizal, west of Quezon, north of Batangas and east of Cavite. Laguna almost completely surrounds Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the country. The province got its name from the Spanish word lago, which means lake.

Laguna is notable for being the birthplace of José Rizal, the country's national hero. Laguna is also famous among tourists for the Pagsanjan Falls, Pila, Laguna Town Plaza, the wood carvings created by the people of Paete and Pakil, the hot spring resorts in Los Baños on the slopes of Mt. Makiling, and Hidden Valley Springs in Calauan.

* Natural Resources: Laguna is endowed with abundant natural resources. Its forests are filled with bamboo, rattan, and soft hardwood. Its wide fields and vast forests are ideal for growing rice, coconuts, vegetables, tropical fruits, orchids, and other ornamental flowers and exotic plants. The province is also rich in mineral resources such as clay, jasper and basalt glass.

There are about forty rivers in Laguna with a total area of almost 0.5 square kilometres. In the forests of Mount Makiling and in the waters of Laguna de Bay are an abundance of flora and fauna. The Laguna de Bay has an approximate area of 3800 km² broken down into 2900 km² of land and 900 km² of lake proper with 220 km shoreline.

Laguna's greatest natural resource is water. It has an estimated 300 million US gallons (1,100,000 m³) of underground water, capable of generating energy for Laguna's expanding power needs. At least seven principal water basins in the province with a total of 5,773 km² drainage area and 1,316 km² level area provide an estimated 9.238 km³ total run-off annually.

* Agricultural Activities: Crop Production, Livestock and Poultry Production, Fishing

* Investment Opportunities: Ecotourism enterprises; Convention centers; Coconut inter-cropping; Forest Trees, Cutflowers & ornamentals; Fruit & vegetable processing; Herbal medicines;Herbal essences; Gifts and housewares; Metalcraft (Industrial equipment, Engines, Surgical instruments, Agricultural machinery, tools); Service Facilities (Packaging, Warehousing, Trucking services, dryers); Electronics (Consumer electronics, Telecommunications, Computers & peripherals, Semi-conductors); and Garments and footwear; Agriculture; Fishing; Forestry; Tourism.

* Financial Institutions: Banking institutions maintain an extensive branch network in Laguna. Commercial banks, savings and mortgage banks, private development banks, stock savings and loan associations, and rural banks operated a total of 267 branches in the province.

Non-bank financial institutions provide supplementary financial services to Laguna residents and businesses. A total of 394 offices have been set up by lending investors, pawnshops, financial companies, nonstock savings and loan associations, and investment houses with quasi-banking functions.

* Exports: US$7.0 Billion (1997) out of total Philippine exports of $25 Billion

Rizal Shrine, Calamba City
http://www.laguna.gov.ph/Articles/tourism_pic/resized_pic/rizal_shrine_lrg.jpg
This two-storey, red-tiled roof, Spanish vintage house is being maintained as a national shrine by the National Government. It houses the Rizalian memorabilia ranging from pictures of the late hero and the women in his life, sculptures by Rizal, to laminated excerpts of some of his written works. The house is by no means an all-original. Except for the old well, everything is a reconstruction of the original house of Dr. Jose Rizal. However, the house has maintained much of its colonial appeal.

The museum offers guided tours for groups. It has a gift shop at the ground floor. There is no entrance fee, but donations are welcome. Museum hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 nn and 1:00 to 5:00p.m., everyday except Monday.

Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery Historical Landmark
http://www.laguna.gov.ph/Articles/tourism_pic/underground_lrg.jpg
Built in 18th century by the Franciscan Missionaries, the underground cemetery is a circular wall structure. The intricately designed wrought iron-gate on the red-tiled walk crosses the grounds leading straight to the opposite side, where an altar-like structure is located. The tombstones are embedded on the brick walls of the cemetery. At the crypt of the cemetery, according to history, is where the Katipuneros plotted against Spanish rule.

The Battle Of Mabitac Mural, Mabitac
http://www.laguna.gov.ph/Articles/tourism_pic/Mabitac_lrg.jpg
The Battle of Mabitac is considered to be one of the first successful battles fought against the American Regime during the Filipino-American War that happened on September 17, 1900. In the said encounter, the Filipino Forces headed by General Juan Cailles killed the US Commanding General Cheatam.

Cultural Attraction

National Arts Center, UP Los Baños
http://www.laguna.gov.ph/Articles/tourism_pic/resized_pic/national_arts_cente_lrg.jpg
The National Arts Center is the show window of Laguna. It is an ideal vantage point for a panoramic view of the Laguna de Bay, Talim Island, Crocodile Lake and the International Rice Research Institute. Also found within its premises is a Ballet Studio and the Rilda O’Brien Cliburn Library or the Humanities, which was established in 1981 as part of the overall logistical support to the operations of the Philippine High School for the Arts. Managed by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the National Arts Center has 62 cottages, an auditorium, and seminar and convention facilities. Reservation could be coursed through the CCP Main Office at Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

Natural Attractions

Mount Makiling, Los Baños
http://www.laguna.gov.ph/Articles/tourism_pic/resized_pic/mt._makiling_lrg.jpg
The mystical Mt. Makiling is an inactive volcano, rising to about 1,109 meter above sea level. The vegetation consists of approximately 2,048 different species of plants. The lower slope is a tall dipterocarp forest while the summit is a dwarf mossy forest. According to legends, the slopes of Mt. Makiling are shaped like that of a woman reclining down. Some say that it is the profile of the sleeping Mariang Makiling, a legendary goddess. Still others say that Mariang Makiling dwells in this mountain and protects it from harm.

Mt. Makiling is ideal for all types of nature tripping –from trekking to bird and butterfly watching, and even camping. The Pook ni Mariang Makiling Resort offers an olympic-sized pool, cottages, tree houses, huts and a panoramic view of the Laguna de Bay.

Seven Lakes, San Pablo City
http://www.laguna.gov.ph/Articles/tourism_pic/resized_pic/seven_lakes_lrg.jpg
Each of the seven lakes is nestled in a depression created long ago by volcanic activity. The seven lakes are: Sampaloc, Mojicap, Palakpakin, Calibato, Pandin, Yambo and the Bunot Lakes. Sampaloc Lake, the biggest of the seven lakes, is dotted fishpens where tilapia, a local freshwater carp species is breed.

Pagsanjan Falls, Cavinti
http://www.laguna.gov.ph/Articles/tourism_pic/pagsanjan_falls_lrg.jpg
Actually, the name of the falls is Magdapio Falls, located the next town, Cavinti. However, the falls has been popularly known as Pagsanjan Falls because the trip to the falls, referred to as “shooting the rapids”, starts from Pagsanjan.

The trip to Pagsanjan Falls is an experience of a lifetime --- another of nature’s treats. This is an exhilarating three-hour boatride from Pagsanjan River to the fall and back. Two seasoned boatmen expertly maneuver the multi-colored native canoe against strong currents through 16 rapids. Moreover, one can imagine being lost in the wilderness when the boatmen paddle and lift their canoe at least five times going up through the gorges and in between the long 400-foot high cliffs of the clear river. However, there is less during the rainy season as the water level is high. During this time when the current is very swift and the falls gushes heavily through the river, the boat rides are cut short to avoid of the danger posed by the high water.

Religious Attractions

St. Gregory Church (Majayjay Catholic Church)
http://www.laguna.gov.ph/Articles/tourism_pic/majayjay_lrg%20copy.jpg
Reputedly one of the oldest churches in the Philippines built in 1575 using forced labor. Antique relief statues of saints, which were brought by the Spaniards, are preserved in this church. Its belfry houses four small bells and one big bell – which are probably the oldest in the country. The rooftop of the church offers an obstructed but nonetheless, breathtaking view of Mt. Banahaw and Laguna de Bay. The church has undergone several reconstructions and rehabilitation works, withstood countless calamities, and endured revolutions. The Americans as headquarters during the Filipino-American war used it. Although much of its past glory and beauty have faded, the church shall forever be treasured by the local people for its stands as witness to the history of the town.

St. James The Apostle Church (Paete Church)
http://www.laguna.gov.ph/Articles/tourism_pic/resized_pic/paete_church_lrg.jpg
Like many of the churches in the province, the Paete Church was built during the early Spanish period. But the novelty of this church lies in the fact that all the religious images found here were carved and/or painted by the residents of Paete long ago. The intricate baroque altar is a monument to their woodcarving industry and the walls of the church boast of large murals done by Jose Dans (19th Century), a true son of Paete who used color pigments mixed with pulverized volcanic ash and brushes fashioned from cat’s hair. Although the church has been recently renovated, and the construction materials are not like the original, the designs remain mainly the same.

San Pedro De Alcantara Church (Pakil Church)
http://www.laguna.gov.ph/Articles/tourism_pic/pakil_church_lrg.jpg
Completed in 1767 after 35 years of construction, the architectural design of the Pedro de Alcantara Parish Church is reminiscent of the Corinthian and Ionic styles. In 1788, the Virgin of Turumba was enshrined in this church. Through the years, the church has survived great calamities. Along with the rectory, it was burned in 1851 but was repaired the same year; it survived two earthquakes, one in 1881 and the other in 1937. Now, the church is a major attraction of the area. 14 icons grace its main altar with the Archangel Michael towering above the others. Each icon is housed in an elaborately carved niche. This old Franciscan church also houses an authentic painting of Jose Dans (19th Century), a painter from Paete. Although the interior of the church has been renovated recently, the design of the church remains basically the same.

Its belfry four small bells and one huge bell, which are rung daily at 12:00 noon and 6:00 p.m.

Our Lady Of Candelaria (Mabitac Church)
http://www.laguna.gov.ph/Graphics/Pics/MabitacChurchSteps01_Large.jpg
The Mabitac Church stands mighty high atop its 126 stone steps. Its façade is definitely old Spanish style but the interior is quite modern. Like most old churches, it has a belfry connected to the main church.

I used to jog in this area...is it raining hard these days in Los Banos?

yup! its raining hard, as in, when you say its raining in LB, you mean its raining tigers and hyenas (not just cats and dogs), but then there's the usual sunny times... so its still the same, very unpredictable weather of UPLB, haaayyy...

UPDATE ON LB:

The whole stretch of Lopez avenue has been paved with a fresh layer of asphalt last week, plus 'permanent' road markings as well and a not so permanent fresh layer of paint on the edge of sidewalks on all roads leading to UPLB...

by the way... i found out that la gloria will be visiting UPLB this tuesday...hehehe, kaya siguro...

SAN PEDRO, LAGUNA

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d0/Ph_locator_laguna_san_pedro.png

San Pedro is a 1st class urban municipality in the province of Laguna, Philippines. It is named after its patron saint, Saint Peter. San Pedro is Laguna's gateway to Metro Manila since it lies on the boundary with Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila's southernmost city. This position makes San Pedro a popular suburban residential community, where many residents commute daily for work in Metro Manila. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 231,403 people in 48,341 households.

Aside from being a primarily suburban community, San Pedro also hosts a large number of factories. Among them include Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Alaska Milk Corporation and General Milling Corporation.

Barangays
San Pedro is politically subdivided into 20 barangays.

History
San Pedro became a town on January 18, 1725, when the Spanish King, Charles II, decreed that the town, formerly known as "tabuko", be a separate town from "Kabullaw", now known as Cabuyao. By virtue of the last will of Philip V of Spain, Rodriguez de Figueroa or "Don Esteban", a group of Augustinian Fathers gained the ownership of the Tunasan Estate. Later on, San Pedro became an hacienda of Colegio de San Jose, a group of Jesuits friars who took over the property which now is known as "San Pedro Tunasan". "Tunasan" came from "Tunas" a medicinal plant, abundant on shoreline area. During that period, agriculture, fishing, duck raising, fruit trees, sampaguita were the main source of income of its residents. This period was highlighted by the growing tenant/landlord dispute. The tenants of Hacienda San Pedro Tunasan fought for their birthrights over their ancestral lands. This struggle took almost 423 years of unsuccessful resistance to Colegio de San Jose, and in 1938, the government bought the homesites of the San Pedro Tunasan Hacienda from the Colegio for re-sale to its tenants. This event laid to rest the tenants/landlord problem in the town.

From the Spanish time until after the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, the scenario did change a bit, when on August 30, 1945, President Ramon Magsaysay signed at the historic town plaza the Land Tenancy Act. By virtue of this law, farm lots of the hacienda were bought by the Philippine Government to be sold at cost to the tenants or occupants of the farm lots in Bayan-Bayanan under the Narra Settlement Project of the Magsaysay Administration.

Uy! Meron palang thread para sa Laguna! Isang tiga-San Pedro po ang nandito. Btw, how should we be called? If Batangas have Batanguenos, Cavite have Cavitenos and Bulacan have Bulakenos, is it correct to call us Lagunenos? (Parang ang pangit yata)Just a question.

As for San Pedro... I really don't have anything to brag about it. Actually, I really pity my little town. We had the advantage of progressing faster than our neighboring towns because of our proximity to Metro Manila, PERO NAPAGIWANAN NA TALAGA KAMI! I will not doubt if Binan can overtake San Pedro's cityhood (may ganitong term ba?) Our town is being run by a TRAPO!!! Haaaay...

I have been here all my life, and I haven't seen any trace of progress, except that there are more fast food restaurants now as compared to before. Try going inside the municipal hell and judge for yourself the mess inside!!! Grabe talaga! Hate to say this, but San Pedro is really chaotic! I just hope the townspeople will select a new and more promising mayor the next time. But there's another problem to that... there are no good candidates! All are rotten tomatoes!

Cruz proper.. minsan ask your dad to go inside Sta. Cruz para makita mo..

Los Banos is different.. nandon kasi ang UP.. so talagang matao.. Sta. Cruz has the provincial capitol, which is about half a kilometer long.. maganda rin mamasyal don.. at mag jogging.. it has a tennis court and a golf course.. tapos we have the provincial hospital.. may mga private hospitals din.. tapos sa town proper.. gasoline stations, mcdo, jollibee, hardwares. Ang isang noticeable eh maraming chinese sa sta. cruz.. halos lahat nang tindhan sa palengke puro chinese may ari.. lahat nang mayayaman ay chinese.. so halos lahat nang establishments chinese may ari.. wala na yatang cinema sa sta. cruz.. it used to have 2, laguna and columbia cinema.. kaya lang parehong matanda na.. so they closed it down na.. 2 rin ang mercury drug sa sta. cruz... columbia garden restaurant I think is still there.. the catholic church, municipal hall and the park are all in one area, sa center nang town proper.. then the provincial capitol and hospital are located in another area, about a kilometer away from the town proper..

Because almost of the big names in jeepney industry was originated in this city like Armak and Sarao. bukod pa dito halos lahat ng mga car companies ay may store dito to compete but sad to say madami ng nagclose n gawaan ng mga jeep dito dahil na rin siguro sa ating economy

Rockwell at Sta. Elena unveiled

The Philippine STAR 10/27/2006

Rockwell Land Cop. (Rockwell) recently signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Sta. Elena Properties, Inc. to develop the prime land within the prestigious 260-hectares Sta. Elena golf course community in Sta. Rosa. Laguna.

The new township development is Rockwell’s first of many projects lined up, as it breaks out of its 15-hectare pioneering project in Makati, known as Rockwell Center.

"Rockwell at Sta. Elena is synergy at work," said Rockwell president Tong Padilla.

He added, "The proponents of Sta. Elena have successfully positioned the development as the country’s premiere golf and residential community and continue to retain its brand franchise. The Rockwell brand, on the other hand, is known for creating prime residential spaces situated in a private, secure and complete inner-city community."

Together, the joint venture partners are embarking on improving the master plan of Sta. Elena into an integrated residential golf and leisure community that enhances the beauty of the property’s rolling terrain, rivers and lakes, lush greeneries and its natural environment.

The development of Rockwell at Sta. Elena will happen in two (2) major phases and will embrace the golf landscape of the entire property. There will be villages that will offer residential lots and housing options that include detached houses, villa clusters and walk-up apartments supported by a world-class country-club and a sprawling retail town center.

Rockwell estimates it would take three and six years, respectively, for project development.

Govt to build railway around Laguna Lake
THE PROJECT, WHICH INCLUDES A ROAD NETWORK,
WILL COST $2.4B THROUGH B.O.T. SCHEME

By Max V. de Leon
Reporter

The government announced Thursday its plan to construct a road and railway system around the 220-kilometer Laguna Lake through a $2.4-billion build-operate-transfer (BOT) project.

To be called the Laguna Bay-Rizal Ecological Transport System (Labart), the project will be undertaken by a consortium of foreign and local private and state corporations.

The project was announced Thursday by Laguna Gov. Teresita Lazaro and Panay Railways chair Ofelia Bulaong.

The main objective of the project is to provide adequate accessibility to the towns and cities surrounding Laguna Lake to Metro Manila’s principal road arteries and railway systems to transform all the provinces in the Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon and Aurora area into progressive industrial centers.

Bulaong said the project, although unsolicited, has been cleared by the National Economic and Development Authority.

Bulaong did not give specific details on the project because they are still finalizing the terms with the other groups that will undertake Labart along with Panay Railways Corp.

It entails the construction of an integrated road and railway system from Metro Manila to all towns and cities along the shoreline of Laguna de Bay in direct linkage with the proposed LRT-1 Coastal Road extension to Cavite and Philippine National Railway at FTI, Taguig.

The first option that the proponents are now looking at is the “shoreline embankment and causeway road” composed of approximately 150 kms of shoreline embankment road, 30 kms of causeway structure, 25 kms of land-based on-grade road and railway.

Bridges and series of box culverts will cross the route lines, accommodating water vessels’ passage and flow of water from land to prevent flooding.

The second option is the “Laguna de Bay on stilt carriageway for road and railway” that would involve the construction of structures above the lake’s waterline to minimize conflict with agencies and groups protecting the Laguna Lake, and issues on land reclamation, squatters and right of way.

The proponents listed 15 main components for the Labart:

the C-5/FTI to Lower Bicutan
Taguig-Calamba segment
Calamba to Bay segment
Bay to Caliraya segment
South Bay segment
Jala-Jala mountain segment
Jala-Jala to Pililia segment
Pililia to Mangahan segment
Mangahan to Lower Bicutan C6
Talim Island Spur Line
Caliraya to Mauban segment
PNR railway rehabilitation
a proposed railway
Rizal container port and Mauban international port.

The derivative components will be side projects on pollution control, water supply, flood control and land development.

The project will strategically provide a direct fast transport system to Makati and Pasig, the country’s premier financial centers, and the expanding Global City in Taguig.

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport will also just be minutes away through the C5 road.

Chinese group funds Laguna project

STA. CRUZ, Laguna—President Arroyo welcomed Thursday members of the Chinese consortium who will undertake the development of the $2.5-billion Laguna-Rizal Ecological Transport System (Labart).

The President had an opportunity to meet anew the Chinese consortium members during the 64th birth anniversary celebration of Laguna Gov. Teresita “Ningning” Lazaro at the Laguna Provincial Cultural Center in this capital town. Su Min and Ji Chen, government liaison officers of China’s Ministry of Finance, and Lin Jian Xin of the Xiamen municipal government, extended their gratitude to the President during the rites.

“It is my pleasure to meet you again. Hope we will have a bountiful relationship for our transport system project,” she told the Chinese investors in return.

The members of the Chinese consortium expressed elation on meeting the Chief Executive and for giving them the opportunity to undertake the so-called LABART project.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno and Presidential Adviser for Region IV-A Ed Manda also graced the occasion.

The American and Chinese consortiums and the provincial government of Laguna signed a Memorandum of Undertaking for LABART in Xiamen, China during the President’s visit to the People’s Republic of China last month.

The LABART project has three main components:

the construction of a circumferential road along Laguna Lake
the railway from Mauban, Quezon going to the Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) in Taguig City; and the
water supply and water treatment facilities of Laguna Lake.

Panay Railways, Inc. chairman Ofelia Bulaong, representative of the Philippine government in the consortium, said they will implement development of Phase 1 of the LABART project next year.

“There would be no problem on the right of way because it encompasses the Laguna Lake. It will open up the eastern seaboard from Mauban, Quezon to FTI then will directly connect to the Pasig River,” Bulaong said

yeah, palagi kaming nasa laguna pag may pera.. mura lang ang lodging... but nakakainis, i had experienced discrimination in one of those big public resorts in calamba or los banos. we were all boys and the resort had this policy of not accepting all male group... nakakahiya kasi wala naman kaming ginawa, after we have decided na dun na tumuloy, sasabihan kang ganun....
and i had a similar experience in tagaytay... whats with all-male group...(okay i get their point, but then, mali pa rin...)

CANLUBANG TO BE DEVELOPED AS A SUPER REGIONAL HUB
Ayala Land Inc.’s master plan positions Canlubang, Laguna as regional center

The country’s largest property developer, Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI), is positioning Canlubang, Laguna as a regional center after it has completed its master plan, Chief Finance Officer Jaime E. Ysmael told BusinessWorld.

In an interview, Mr. Ysmael said the company, together with Ayala-owned Avida Land, Inc. and Community Innovations, Inc., will enter into a joint development agreement with CECI Realty, Inc., Aurora Properties, Inc. and Vesta Properties Holdings, Inc. after Canlubang Properties underwent a master-planning review process aimed at developing the area into a complete and intergrated township.

"We are now going into the detailed implementation plan. We will enter into joint development agreement with the Canlubang companies to develop their specific parcels of land. It will be a new regional center not intended to replace Makati [City central business district]. That area that sits at the heart of Calabarzon [Calamba, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon] area has a large industrial base and the beginnings of a university compound complex," he added.

The Canlubang development follows the P6-billion investment of Ayala over the next five to 10 years for the 38-hectare property of the University of the Philippines (UP) into a fully integrated information technology (IT) and IT-enabled services community.

Last October, ALI entered a 25-year contract of lease with the state university to develop the lot named the UP North Science and Technology Park. Development work will start within the first half of 2007.

For Canlubang, ALI plans to develop another business process outsourcing (BPO) campus by the second semester of 2007.

Mr. Ysmael said the Canlubang property calls for a BPO component and residential elements addressing the high-end, middle-income and affordable segment aside from the retail complex which will effectively service the requirements of the BPO campus and adjoining residential communities.

"A lot of the big universities in Manila have positioned in that area. La Salle Canlubang is up; Don Bosco and St. Scholastica’s College are there. UST has broken ground; even Ateneo, University of Asia & the Pacific and Xavier School have parcels of land there. Eventually, it will be a regional hub," he added.

As the Arroyo administration is positioning the Philippines as a Southeast Asian "retirement haven," the Canlubang development plan will also have a retirement village.

"We are still trying to develop specific products that will cater to that market. But the sheer size of Canlubang and characteristics of the terrain lends itself for that kind of development," he said.

ALI is still finalizing its budget for next year but, Mr. Ysmael said this will not be too far from what the company intended to spend in 2006. This year, the company’s consolidated project and capital expenditures budget is set at P16.1 billion, up from the P13.6 billion earmarked for 2005.

In 2007, ALI will launch its foray in the Visayas and Mindanao markets as it introduces residential projects in Iloilo and Cagayan de Oro. It will start construction of its first mall outside Metro Manila. With a leasable space of 70,000 square meters, the mall in Angeles, Pampanga is positioned to be a regional mall.

It will add 226,250 square meters in gross leasable retail area to its portfolio of shopping centers as it opens the 195,000-square-meter Triangle North of Manila (Tri Noma) and 31,250-square-meter Greenbelt 5 next year.

Opening in May, Tri Noma is expected to compete head on with SM City North EDSA which was recently expanded by the Sys. — Ruby Anne M. Rubiov

Cathay Land to pour P2B
on its South Forbes development

By Max V. de Leon
Reporter

CATHAY Land Inc. is pouring P2 billion this year to further develop its South Forbes Golf City in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, after its previous projects in the area proved successful.

Jeffrey Ng, Cathay Land president, said in a statement that fresh capital will be allotted for five new development projects inside the 500-hectare Golf City.

Ng said this was spurred by the overwhelming response its three developments in the area received last year: the Zen-inspired Tokyo Mansions, the French-themed Châteaux de Paris and the Thai-influenced Phuket Mansions.

“To our pleasant surprise, the market is now clamoring for much bigger lots and even plusher houses,” Ng said. “Thus, bigger, grander subdivision projects such as the art-deco Miami and tropical Nirwana Bali will now be introduced to the market. The company is projecting a strong market reception to the Asian modern themed Sentosa Heights—which feature spacious houses on lots of more 1,000 square meters [and] all overlooking the fairways of the South Forbes Golf Club.”

Cathay Land, Ng added, is also going to develop two condominium clusters fronting the golf course—the Golf View Terraces and the Greenview Towers.

He said the continued growth of the upper middle-income to high-income segment and the strong buying interest among overseas Filipinos point to boom years ahead. Plus, Ng added, retirees are now more confident to invest in second homes and estates, as well as easy financing schemes banks now offer their client.

“For the first time ever, banks are now offering end-users low interest rates fixed for up to 30 years,” he said. “There has never been a better time to own a home and invest in real estate.”

To attract more clients, the South Forbes Golf City is offering its club membership for free. Its 18-hole golf course will be completed this year and the first nine holes will open in May.

“South Forbes Golf City redefines residential and commercial development into an inclusive mix that combines distinctive lifestyle choices for the whole family,” Ng said. “We are expecting investors, home buyers, retirees, and Filipinos working abroad to embrace and experience the golf lifestyle only here at South Forbes.”

Unilab opens P1.7-billion plant in Laguna
By Mia Gonzalez
Reporter

PRESIDENT Arroyo said on Tuesday that the decision of United Laboratories (Unilab) to open its P1.7-billion manufacturing subsidiary, Amherst Laboratories Inc., in Laguna is proof that the Philippines continues to be a competitive investment site.

The President made the statement in an interview with Biznews Asia, hours after she inaugurated Unilab’s newest facility at its headquarters in Biñan, Laguna.

“We are competitive; we’re seeking to be more competitive. Today I just came from Unilab, they opened an investment that cost P1.7 billion and they’re putting up two more plants that will bring their [new investments] all in all to P7.5 billion,” said Mrs. Arroyo, who did not give a speech at the Unilab event.

Asked what she would tell investors about prospects in the Philippines, the President said that if her schedule allows it, she would be willing to attend the inauguration of factories and business process outsourcing centers “every day” to show how attractive the country has become for investors.

“When I open a factory, a picture is worth a thousand words. If they see us opening factories and BPOs almost every week [they will be enticed to invest]. If my schedule allows it, maybe every day I will be doing it,” she said.

The President also said Unilab is “bidding to be the first US FDA-accredited factory in the Philippines,” which would allow Philippine-made products to be sold in the United States.

Amherst Laboratories, Inc., located in the Unilab Pharma Campus, is said to be on a par with the world’s best, making it the most modern manufacturing plant for pharmaceutical and healthcare products in the country today.

Unilab executives led by Jocelyn Campos Hess gave Mrs. Arroyo a tour of the plant and briefed her on the various stages of manufacturing medicines. The President was informed about the plant’s state-of-the-art air filtration system to ensure that its facilities are 100 percent or close to 100 percent dust and bacteria free.

“This ensures that utmost care is taken by the company to provide the consumers with clean, high quality medicines,” Nestor Felicio, Unilab vice president for strategic manufacturing and supply chain management, told Mrs. Arroyo.

The new plant has a total building area of 24,000 sq. meters, with a 5,500-sq. meter single floor interstitial machine room, a 4,000-sq. meter warehouse for common materials and finished goods, a quality assurance laboratory, and a two-storey administration building.

It produces mostly prescription medicine, and has a projected annual capacity of more than one billion tablets a year. Unilab, and now through Amherst, manufactures Biogesic, Hydrite rehydration salts, Dolfenal and Lormide tablet, among others.

^ Ayala also has a 1,600 hectare + property in Canlubang and they're planning to launch it within the year

I think Ayala will develop this in partnership with the Yulo family of Iloilo. The Yulos own vast properties in Canlubang.

"Miriam Katigbak, head of signature projects of ALI's strategic landbank management group, said the company is optimistic on the development of a 1,696-hectare property in Canlubang, Laguna.

In partnership with the Yulo family, Katigbak said the Canlubang property will be launched in the third quarter of 2007.

The Canlubang property will house residential, office and retail projects and a business process outsourcing campus to be located at the center. The project will also be built in a Laguna lake area."

" ALI has allotted P16.2 billion for capital expenditure this year for its other properties, the bulk of which would fund residential and shopping center developments.

Company president Jaime I. Ayala said the company will launch 27 residential projects this year located in various parts of Luzon like Antipolo, Bulacan, and Canlubang. It would also open the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City this May and expand Greenbelt Cebu and Ayala Center Cebu."

Source: http://businessmirror.com.ph/03292007/headlines03.html

"The firm will also be expanding Asiatown I.T. Park, which has become the BPO/IT capital of the south and begin construction on the Canlubang Business and Technology Campus towards the end of the year.

Ayala said they will also have a host of projects that will prime development in its three strategic landbank areas in Makati, Bonifacio Global City, and Canlubang.

In Makati, work has already begun on implementing the first phases of the redevelopment of Ayala Center, which will continue in earnest through the course of the year.

ALI will also continue driving growth in land values through additional priming activity in Bonifacio Global City, with a particular emphasis on building-up the area as a business district.

And in Canlubang, ALI will be bringing to market the first phases of the development towards the end of the year, beginning with the grand launch of the master plan which captures its vision for the community.

All three of ALI’s residential brands will also be simultaneously launching projects in Canlubang in the third quarter, said Ayala."

greetings!

Its been long time since i last posted here in SSC.

anyway, i'd just like to announce that Mt. Makiling will be closed during this holy week (until April 8) due to still possible dangers left by typhoon milenyo last september 2006. This would cover the trail/road from the T.R.E.E.S., College of Forestry and Natural Resources, UPLB up to Peak 2. The Boy Scouts of the Philippines and National Arts Center roads will still be open (as far as i know, coz we'll be doing our annual maundy thursday jog there instead since our usual route will be closed)

also, the 5th ASEAN Inter Club Age Group Swimming Chamionships is being held at Trace Aquatic Center, LB (April 3-8) while a Summer Science Clinic is being held at UPLB.

Carry lang un. Nasa boundary naman na kasi ng Quezon and Laguna ang San Pablo eh. And if I'm not mistaken, malapit na sa part ng Quezon ang CBD niya.

^^ Di ko lang ma-imagine ano itatawag sa kanya. San Pablo City, Metro Quezon o Metro Laguna. :D Anyway, magme-merge naman malamang ang Metro Laguna at Quezon.

^^ pls note guys... the map only represent "population catchment basins" and not metro regions... IMO this means dito ang magiging concentration ng population sa calabarzon, but metro regions will still be classified per province...
sa case ng metro regions, wala ang Sn. Pablo kasi parang stand alone sya unlike Metro Lucena, Metro Batangas, Metro Lipa, Metro Dasma, etc. where the contigious towns are incorporated to become a Metro region.

Laguna is fastest growing province in S. Tagalog

REELECTIONIST Senator Edgardo Angara has commended Laguna province for maintaining its status as the fastest-growing province in the Southern Tagalog region.

Angara noted that Laguna is contributing 11.79 percent of the region's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the biggest share in the GDP outside of Manila.

He attributed this big contribution to the province's tourist attractions and agricultural ventures.

"Laguna has a balanced agro-industrial economy that is very close to Metro Manila, and at the same time, it offers varied tourism destinations like hot springs, lakes, water falls, forests and fisheries," Angara said.

He cited records showing that Laguna has the second highest number of registered tourists in Southern Tagalog in 2005, just 250,000 visitors less than the registered visitors in Cavite in the same year.

The senator also noted that the province is now becoming a center of economic activity in Southern Tagalog by hosting almost half of the region's manufacturing businesses.

"Business in the area is building up as shown by the presence of several industrial estates designed for handling small and medium enterprises (SMEs) engaged in textile manufacturing, electronics, food processing, industrial machines, and car assembly," he explained.

Angara, a former agriculture secretary, also pointed out that Laguna's economic progress has been enhanced by its potential as the fruit basket of Southern Tagalog.

"Sweet tropical fruits abound in Laguna. These are the lanzones from Paete; pineapple from Calauan; and chico, banana, mango, rambutan and avocado from Sta. Cruz. Indeed, Laguna has been a top contributor to our country's national income, not only through its industrial production, tourism but also through its agricultural harvests," he said. (CPB/Sunnex)
