When I took my first ride with this, it had a serious "teknisk problem", the whole system seemed to be stuck. But otherwise it worked perfectly. Actually I got very familiar with it as my hotel was located pretty close to "Forum" station.

Woah, That is the most beautiful airport I have ever seen!

It may be beautiful, but don't believe the hype about it being convenient.
Long walks, crowded halls, long lines. At least the sec officers are friendly and polite and the transport to the city is great..
However, CPH is far behind MUC, ZRH, HAM or any other comparable European airport. Even VIE, which isn't exactly the best airport, seems better to me.

@staff: I will if you comment on my Vienna HDR thread.. ;) j/k

Actually CPH is ranked among the top airports in Europe! Although it is starting to suffer from overcrowding due to capacity problems. An expansion is due pretty soon I'd guess.
MUC is definitely a better airport though, in every way! :)

Since Copenhagen is heavily over-represented in this thread I will post some aerial pics of my city Malmö!

The first pictures are from an exhibition called "Skåne - lika grant från ovan" and were taken by a photographer called Bertil Hagberg in 2004-2005. The exhibiton was displaying aerial pictures of the southernmost part of Sweden - Skåne. The rest were taken by me during a helicopter ride over the city in 2005.

Malmö is considered to be a very green city thanks to its numerous parks. On this pictures you can see the biggest one called Pildammsparken.

Very nice! One thing that strikes me is the cars with headlights on a very bright day, it just looks wierd.

^it's the law to have lights on at all time of the day

I like that law it makes it able to see wether a car is on and about to move or just parked plus a lot of other good things

Today's pictures weren't exactly planned, I was driving up north to take a walk in a forest ( look at my Denmark thread for pictures of that ) and as I was driving trough the district of Hellerup in Copenhagen I thought why not stop and take a few pictures... so I did :)

It should however be mentioned that this was at around 9 in the morning, on a saturday, so if you wonder why the streets are empty - there's your reason :)

Hellerup is one of the more wealthier parts of the city and primarily suburban - trough it and along the coast runs the 'Strandvej' ( "beach road" ) and it's in the southern parts of that these pictures were taken..

Wow! Copenhagen looks unbelievably attractive on these pictures! The combination of the old town, 19th century residential areas and modern architecture in the harbour is just splendid. Overall the atmosphere seems extremely nice, I wouldn't mind to live there for a while! :)

nice pictures but that "freki" sign that you put is killing them. Nobody told you that?Yeah I know, but as long as people hotlink like there was no tomorrow and it's accepted by various sites, such as SSC despite it being an actual copyright violation, the logo ain't going anywhere..

The logo doesn't stop anything, but it makes people think twice, it keeps companies from stealing and it makes people remember and recognize my photos and my "style" :)

( I've had some of my earliest pictures pop up on a "Iranian defense forum" - strange stuff :nuts: so atleast now it'll be hard to claim and easy for me to find.. )


All in all it takes up something like 2% and I places it in the cornor where it disturbes the least - so I hope people can live with it.. :)

Although something keeps popping up in my mind: the story I just read about the recent riots in Malmo. It makes me so sick to hear about immigrants coming to a country to make a better life for themselves, and then end up rioting in the streets burning cars and throwing rocks at police officers!:mad2: I mean, I thought we had it bad over here in the states, but I've never heard about anything like that happen over here!

Look, I'm sorry, but that just makes me really upset. I know it sounds naive, but I just thought most of Europe was, well, "immune" to that stuff...:ohno:

Anyway, I just had to get that out. Sorry. But seriously, Copenhagen and Malmo are very nice looking cities.

First of all, that's completely off topic (this is a photo thread).
Secondly, the "riots" started as a peaceful protest by a group of people who wanted to keep their mosque in the basement of a building. When AFA and other scumbag groups (ie. the kids throwng rocks at the police as soon as anything big EU- or G8 related goes down any place in Europe) heard of this they went out in mainly immigrant populated areas and started fighting the police. The whole thing is of course portrayed as "immigrant riots"...

Anyway. Great pics as usual, FREKI. Love the mood in the last Frederiksberg set!

Most don't make it though and we've seen chains like Subway and Pizza Hut go in the last couple of years, but others keep a couple around and in this case that one has been there since 97..

I think they stay simply to be able to ad a nation to their "global list" - something I'd probable do too :) - and while US fast food isn't the Danes favorite we do have a few of most chains scattered around the nation, usually in tourist zones or along the freeways that connects continental Europe with the Scandinavian countries and Finland..

Dominos is alright. Its not real high quality, but its good if you are throwing a part or watching a game. I think its better than Pizza Hut or other pizza chains. People complain about it being a bit too "doughy".

There's a couple franchises in tourist areas and near bars, clubs and pubs - but other than that and near freeways you don't see many..

It's usually a place you go at 5am after a night of drinking.. :)

By Googling it I got the understanding that it's Othodox Jews? :dunno:

In that case visually identifiable jews are a rare sight in Copenhagen ( and the Nordics in general ) - I'm not sure exactly why that is, but my guess would be that just like everyone else is very relaxed when it comes to religion so would they be :dunno: so my guess is that whom may have been left here after WW2 have either left for Israel or become relaxed about it and stayed :dunno:

People don't wear religious clothing here, I've never seen a nun here f.ex and other than the muslim vail and the male muslim clothing seen on fridays after prayer you rarely see anything..

It's not that it isn't tollerated, it's more a question of people not being religious.. so there's no pressure to show you belong to a group..

MALMÖ

Sweden's third largest municipal is also the most dense city in Sweden. Almost half of the urban area's population lives in the city core/centre, and the rest lives in large scale housing projects built in the 60-70s or detached houses. About half of the city's housing was built during Sweden's "glory days" between 1955-75, during the so called "Million Programme".

The inner city has a density of 10.495 p/km2 (~27.200 p/sqm) while the urban area as a whole has 3.596 p/km2 (9.313 p/sqm).


It forms with Copenhagen the population epicentre of the otherwise sparsely populated Scandinavia.

Due to the geography (Scania is completely flat), the city proper is compact and doesn't sprawl like Stockholm. The suburbs and satellites are separated from the city by farmland.

Lund is the closest "big" (100.000+) satellite city of Malmö (about 15km). There should be aerial pics of it but I haven't been able to find any good ones just yet. :(

Regarding the inner city, there's currently only buses, but 54 km of light rail is being planned as we speak. The regional- and commuter rail transit is quite developed though.

Does anyone have knowledge (beyond wikipedia) about the English Bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807?

From wiki. :
"The British fired 5,000 rounds into Copenhagen on the first night of bombardment, 2,000 rounds into the city on the second night, and 7,000 rounds on the third night. More than 2,000 civilians were killed and 30% of the buildings were destroyed during the battle. The bombardment had included Congreve Rockets, which caused fires."

I love the old Renaissance style of Denmark, particularly the Borsen building, and I have always wondered if there were other similar buildings that have been lost through time, particularly after what happened in 1807.

I have a bit of a curious question.
Does anyone have knowledge (beyond wikipedia) about the English Bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807?

I'm certainly no expert on the field but as such I don't think neither the bombardment nor the fire some centuries prior to it would have destoyed many Renaissance buildings - while those two events combined damaged some 60% of the buildings in the city it would mostly have been the dense tudor buildings in high desity residential parts, where the renaissance buildings were usually public ones belonging to either the state or the royal family and often located at a distance to other buildings and surrounded by garden, park or square..

And with the city defenses it would have been very hard for the British to target any such with direct cannon fire, so while I don't know for certain I would expect damage to only be very light on such buildings..
And with the value of them and symbolism I think restoration would have been of high importance almost no matter how damaged..

Apperently it was a 'Hans van Steenwinckel' who designed Børsen and when looking at his other works they are still there around the city..

As for buildings of the past you could try to give the 'Nordic & Baltic Skybar' a chance - there is a lot of bright minds there with a lot of knowledge who might be able to help..

Unfortunately many beautiful renaissance buildings have been destroyed or lost through time in Copenhagen, and there aren't really that many left. There are a few, most of them recontructions after the british bombardment, but not at all in the same scale and beauty as they once were... I have seen paintings from the 1600 of several old squares in Copenhagen and I can tell from those paintings that Copenhagen had a lot more renaissance buildings.

The limited history of the battle I found on the internet say that the British were trying force Copenhagen to surrender their navy and other armaments to prevent them from falling into the hands of Napolean.
I am tempted to feel that it was meant as a display of power, to impress and intimidate the French, much in the same way many people theorize that non-strategic Dresden was destroyed during WWII simply to impress the Soviets.
The use of Congreve rockets are a particularly disturbing aspect of the 1807 bombardment. It really seems as if the British were trying to create a firestorm, which probably would have killed three times as many had they succeeded.

A vibrant, beautiful painting. You can clearly see the Renaissance details on the buildings in the center as well as on a couple of facades on the right. I especially love the dragon head water spouts on the roof-line of the building standing to the upper left, and how just below them the artist included the quaint detail of a curtain billowing outward, which is probably what happened as he was painting this.

Back in the day moat based defenses surrounded the entire city, but as time went and the city grew it has now ended up in the center of town more or less..
Personally I hold the place very dear as I used to work there while in the military, as the place is not only historic but a very active part of the Danish military and home to the Military Intelligence, the Chief of Defence and various brances of the Home Defence among other things
To most however it works as one of the city's best parks doing the daytime, so let's take a look..

It is located in Frederiksberg Park that is one of the best parks in the city!

That building (the former Royal Palace) is very nice building, and the location looking very nice too

Strøget is the overall name for the longest and largest pedestrial shopping area in Europe

Here you can find just about everything you would want, only real problems is the crowds as the streets tends to be really crowded and move way longer than what I'm confortable with..

Ever ventured into Christiania to make a couple of pics over there? I was there last week to take a look, what a mess. It looked like a parody of the sixties.

Copenhaguen really is as beautyful as in the pictures....I couldnt been in the Christiania district but some other travellers told me it worths a visit!!..he also told me that no cameras are allowed in Christiania (maybe thats the reason why no pics were already posted)...

Im gonna be honest, when my friends told me we were going to Scandinavia and our first stop was Copenhaguen (we were in Berlin) I thought ok...lets see that lil mermaid and then lets go to stokholm.....stupid me....Copenhaguen was the best city of the trip!! :lol:...really a surprise!

In theory I love the idea of building your own home, growing your own crops and pretty much live closer to how humans are supposed to live - sadly however I have not seen it work in reality, neither here nor elsewhere, so I see it as a romantic dream that doesn't go well with reality..

In Christiania's case it ended up being a gathering place for unemployed, early retired, drug users and.. well worse.. and after many years of government acceptance they final got enough a few years ago and the place will slowly be changed to a normal residential area with a few alternative living options.. something that can't go fast enough if you ask me!

Didn't want to stress the negative. On the other side of the road I was very lucky to walk past a school which had all kind of festivities because the pupils just made their graduation. There was a lot of sound in the city afterwards. I already wondered the days before why every youngster was wearing those silly-looking white hats. Later on, I wished we had a similar tradition in the Netherlands.

A cool place to visit, perhaps. But when you have to live with it and its "consequences" every day, you sometimes end up feeling just slightly different about it.

It looks like a lovely place and I'm impressed with all the bikes there.It just goes to show that skyscrapers aren't always necessary in a modern city.

We'll start out by a trip up the new 'Wheel of Copenhagen' - the largest Ferris wheel in Northern Europe

It's unclear if it will become perminant - so far it's only here for 3 months, but if a success there's a good chance they'll let it stay :)

The glass was pretty dirty and very reflective so not very camera firendly, so don't expect too much in terms of quality, but on a plus side you get never seen before angles :)

This thread is so nostalgic for me. I only lived in CPH for 2 years, but I still consider it my second (well, third after Melb & London) home. The city had a huge effect on me and really changed my ideas and personality.

Visited Tuborg Havn today located in the norther part of Copenhagen ( Hellerup ) where the suburbs starts..
It's a nice mix of commercial buildings and residential ones and home to some of the most interesting architecture in the city..

There´s some hedious buildings in the last update...anyway the city vibe and those lakes compensate all that ugly stuff :D

The Radisson SAS Blu hotel is in a few of the last shots - this is a really important building, designed by Arne Jacobsen. A Danish response to the modernist American skyscrapers being designed at that time (50s). The lobby furniture is also created by Jacobsen. I think it deserves a few better pictures.

Also, these other modernist buildings aren't the worst in the world - as mid-century modern goes, these are pretty good buildings. I especially like the Imperial Hotel, and the building above the Netto.

^^ Radisson Blu Royal Hotel is a classic. I'm saving up for a stay at room 606, which features the original Arne Jacobsen decor from the 60's, and of course some dining at skybar/restaurant Alberto K with a great view over Copenhagen.
