S.Yorks Capital July 8th, 2006, 12:41 PM Malmo looks nice but is'nt it the most dangerous city in Scandanavia? BTW what is the distance between Copenhagen and Malmo.
staff July 8th, 2006, 12:46 PM S.Yorks Capital,
Yes, Malmö is said to be one of the most dangerous cities in Scandinavia, but if you hang out in the western parts you have nothing to worry about. :)
The distance is some 15 kilometres!
Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup. Arguably the best designed airport in the world (and one of the best overall), and hub of Scandinavian Airlines - SAS:

Question...I read/heard that Malmö was a bit rundown (how do you call it) town in Sweden. How is it now? Is it booming or what? Is there maybe a positive impact from the Turning Torso (god do I hate that name but the building is wauw!)?

Hmm, Malmö has never been "rundown", the city is very beautiful with a spectacular inner city area with nice buildings and a lot of parks. The newer areas at the water front are also regarded as some of the finest pieces of modern architecture in all of Europe, especially the Turning Torso.
But yes, Malmö is booming, not thanks to Turning Torso - thanks to the Öresund Bridge to Copenhagen. Turning Torso itself is a result of that too, and now there are plans for more 200m+ skyscrapers in Malmö.

Anymodal July 9th, 2006, 12:03 AM Best of Scandinavia IMO.
Im seriously interested in living there at some point in my life. Heard theyre pretty English friendly too!
Hviid July 9th, 2006, 12:03 AM samsonyuen> the Øresund region is just like the Niagara region... 2 cities in 2 different countries, part of the same region, connected by 1 (or more) bridges...
Danish, Swedish and Norwegian are all very similar languages... it's generally easy for a swede to understand danish (and the other way around). In writing it's almost identicle, but pronounciation or accent-wise it's pretty different. I guess you can sort of compare these 3 languages to American english and Jamaican english..

milwaukee-københavn July 11th, 2006, 07:44 PM Here's a pic I took of København, Hovedbanegaarden (Central Station) from Istedgade, one of my favorite places in the city.

spiyrel July 12th, 2006, 03:35 AM excellent pics! is there a toll to cross the bridge? if so, how much?
DenverDane July 12th, 2006, 05:26 AM ^^ Yes, there is a toll if you go by car (not by train).
A single trip is 235 DKK ~ 40 USD ~ 32 EUR ~ 53 AUD, but there are discounts if you use the bridge a lot.
http://www.oresundsbron.com/documents/document.php?obj=3198
spiyrel July 12th, 2006, 08:17 AM omg!!! Thats about half the cost of a short domestic plane trip! And here i am guessing it would be about $3-5 US! how wrong was I?
DenverDane July 12th, 2006, 08:28 AM ^^ Yep, the price is steep and has been debated heavily! Some politicians want to get rid of the toll altogether, but I guess there has to be some toll in order to pay for the cost of the bridge, unless they want to increase taxes even further.
That is also why the trains are very popular!
spiyrel July 12th, 2006, 08:48 AM i guess they can charge whatever they want unless they block previous ways of crossing the water such as removing ferry services or other transport which i think would be wrong.
Justme July 12th, 2006, 09:04 AM To be honest, €32 to cross that bridge is a scam. I can fly to Rome from Frankfurt for that price, including taxes.
How much is the train journey between Malmo and Stockholm?
FREKI July 12th, 2006, 09:20 AM To be honest, €32 to cross that bridge is a scam. I can fly to Rome from Frankfurt for that price, including taxes.
How much is the train journey between Malmo and Stockholm? It is!
For that price one could also fly Copenhagen-Berlin with Sterling Air, and for a little extra Oslo or Southern Europe...
The train over is €10
The more you travelthemore yousave starting from 5 person's oneway or 2.5 return :D
staff July 12th, 2006, 09:46 AM You have to remember that Scandinavia in general, and Copenhagen in particular is extremely expensive overall - but still, the toll to cross the bridge by car is still too high.
The train ride, however, is about €10 which is more "okay". I pay about €180 for a monthly pass on the commuter trains.
Justme,
A train ride between Stockholm is approximately €60-70, ie. it's much cheaper to fly (which most people do).
I got nothing against Low cost carriers, but I rarely use them because of bad service and no privileges for frequent flyers - I'm loyal towards SAS and have milage status according to that. :)
cphdude July 12th, 2006, 10:36 AM ^^The lord mayor of Copenhagen said the other day that the price is to high and that she would try and do something about it in the fall. The problem is apparently, that the prices were calculated and planed when people thought that mostly comercial trucks would use the bridge, as an alternative to the ferry, and therefor the prices were kept pretty high on porpuse, so not to create a double polution. Even experts agree on this and say that they the prices should be regulated, as to fitt what the bridge is mainly used for now...As do many politicians. So I think we will se some reduction in price, but so far Sweden has been against the idea and both parties need to agree....
Justme July 12th, 2006, 11:18 AM ^^^^ thanks for the info guys.
€10 is still pretty steep for a train journey, I presume that is one way. IS the €32 bridge toll also one way?
I don’t really understand the issue with trucks. This is easily solved by having a separate toll for trucks and cars. Cars should be between €2-€5, anything over is blatant rip off, for trucks, they can charge as they like. If they charge too much, it will hinder the metropolitan economy.
staff July 12th, 2006, 11:28 AM Justme,
Here's a link to the prices on the official website:
http://osb.oeresundsbron.dk/documents/document.php?obj=3198
As you can see, the return fare is €64 if you don't have a BridgePass, which most people have. If you got this pass, a single journey is €17.
The prices are of course different for trucks, motorcycles, cars, cars with trailers and so on. It's all there on the website. :)
And yes, it is expensive - like everything else around here. :(
vishalt July 12th, 2006, 11:43 AM It looks ok, nothing special

Mr Bricks August 12th, 2006, 12:17 AM Danish, Swedish and Norwegian are all very similar languages... it's generally easy for a swede to understand danish (and the other way around). In writing it's almost identicle, but pronounciation or accent-wise it's pretty different. I guess you can sort of compare these 3 languages to American english and Jamaican english..
I would disagree. I speak swedish fluently but i don´t understand danish at all. Norwegian is much easier to understand.
Anyway, great pics! Although i must say there is something that makes the TT look weird.

Wikipedias definition of a metropolis:
A metropolis (in Greek metera = mother and polis = city/town) is a major city, in most cases with a population of at least one million inside its urban area, or at least, over half million inhabitants in the city proper[1] [2]. It must be regarded as a significant economical, political and cultural center for some country or region, and is usually an important hub for international connections and communications. The plural of the word is metropoleis or metropolises.
In other words Nemo is an airplane :D

FREKI September 7th, 2006, 04:29 PM Copenhagen; The smallest metropolis in the world then..... :| :| :|What's your problem? Have you ever been here?
A metropolis (in Greek metera = mother and polis = city/town) is a major city, in most cases with a population of at least one million inside its urban area, or at least, over half million inhabitants in the city proper Copenhagen city proper has about 595.000 ( incl. Frederiksberg ) and 1.8 mil+ in the metro...
It must be regarded as a significant economical, political and cultural center for some country or region, and is usually an important hub for international connections and communications. It's the capital of Denmark, it houses the Danish Parliament and several UN institutions ( the largest being the entire Supply Division for Unicef ) it has Scandinavia's largest airport ( about 20% of users are btw Swedes ) and is home to many Scandinavian as well as international companies HQ's
It's not Tokyo - but it does qualify for a metrolpolis! :)

Nemo September 8th, 2006, 11:42 AM Absolutely a very beautiful city indeed, I won't argue that. I just pity the fact that the city seems to stick to rather conservative lowrise new architecture; reliable but not shocking.
:)
Ringil September 8th, 2006, 02:54 PM I would disagree. I speak swedish fluently but i don´t understand danish at all. Norwegian is much easier to understand.
Anyway, great pics! Although i must say there is something that makes the TT look weird.
maybe because you're Finnish ;) People from Northern Sweden and people with a more northern kind of accent have harder to understand Danish than the Swedes in southern Sweden, and vice versa :)
My turn to post a few shots, even though most of you probably already have seen'em :)

FREKI September 9th, 2006, 01:00 AM I really like the look of Copenhagen, but I seriously believe that the tallest structures in a city shouldn't be a pile of chimney stacks ;) I agree - much of the industrial parts have gone over the last coupel of decades as the industrial habour was moved ( and divede ) to other more strategicly located cities around the country...
And with the Great Belt bridge linking Funen to Zealand most freigtrail use have stopped opening up new centrally located area for construction..
As the city de-industrialise I really hope to see those chimneysm gone too ( many have been torn down in my lifetime btw ) and a new zone full of 20-120 floor towers take their place :D

The "shoplifting" tag get's a lot of attention - it's quite common to hear people talk about it on the bus when passing it...
I'm very anti grafiti and vandalism, so I dislike that one too, but it is kinda funny in a way...
the "pis flere penge væk" on the front of Kvickly is kinda overkill, though, if you ask me Yeah, that's just crap... damn kids from the Ungdomshus - luckly they will soon be kicked out - and then they will be forced to "pisse flere penge væk" on renting a new place

milwaukee-københavn November 4th, 2006, 10:14 PM I'm a big supporter of Ungdomshuset and i'll be pretty pissed if that actually goes through in december. Places like Ungeren and Christiania are what seperate Kbh. from all of the bland cities of the world, the city's own cultural landmarks. Without them, Kbh. is just a bunch of overpriced apartments with HTH kitchens on all too bland streets. Plus, from a purely practical standpoint, it provides affordable housing to people that otherwise wouldn't have anyplace to go and what they've given back culturally to the city more than pays the rent.

Ungdomshuset and Christiania isn't cultural landmarks, it's goverment areas taken over by no good anarchists ( imo )
For Christiania the good part is it leaves room for some new high rises when we get rid of the last dopehead...
If people wants places to hangout and be alternative they should rent of buy such places like everybody else...
Plus, from a purely practical standpoint, it provides affordable housing to people that otherwise wouldn't have anyplace to goIf they worked like the rest of us that wouldn't be a problem....

See, Kbh. is special because it has the foresight to give room to places like Ungeren and Christiania. Think of how boring the city would be if it was all HTH kitchens and fancy cafes. Christiania isn't about dope, its about experimenting socially, trying to find a better way to live as a society. It's a human-scaled place, made for people not money or cars or skyscrapers. The same for Ungdomshuset. Skyscrapers are dangerous to the idea of the human city- they steal light, create windtunnels and discourage use of the street, instead focusing on the building as a sort of status object. There aren't many other "alternative" places in KBh. because rent's so expensive and all of the city's been redeveloped for yuppies. You can't just start up a cafe or a folkekøkken cause there'd be no way to pay the rent without making the stuff there so expensive that people like students can't afford it. Also, it's almost impossible to find an affordable place to live without a professional job. Try finding a place to live on SU that's more than about 3*3m. Rooms go for 4000/5000kr. a month! Plus, why does Nørrebro need to be developed to look like østerbro? Why can't there be different places for different types? If people want an Ungdomshus then give em one. There's more than enough room in østerbro and christianshavn and indre byen for yuppies who want fancy apartments. Kbh. is big enough that there should be room for all, something that's fast dissapering.
If they worked like the rest of us that wouldn't be a problem....
Do you not believe that people shouldn't be musicians or artists? They add to society but usually don't make enough money to pay the rent. Many of the people who live in Ungdomshuset do these things. Without them, Denmark would be a much less cultured place. Just because you don't like their kind of music or art doesn't mean they shouldn't have the opportunity to make it. Not everyone has the means to make millions off it- they can still be a positive addition to society, though.
This is an interesting topic. I think i'll make an Ungdomshuset thread in S&B forums. Want to continue the discussion there?

Well if you go far enough north in Norway or Sweden you might find snow - but in Denmark it's still double figues and trees with leaves...
Copenhagen normally first get snow in late January and rarely more than 5-10 days a year
( Denmark is like the southern UK blessed with the warm water from the gulfstream, so while normally surrounded by snow it rarely get's to us, despite our location )
Here you can see how the warm water ( and air ) keeps the evil snow away from us :)

Mickey_R November 16th, 2006, 04:33 PM Hehe if you look at Finland and Sweden it looks like something... ;)
Yörch November 17th, 2006, 04:06 AM Amazing...
I love Danish design in every single thing they build!
It's amazing too how some nations build bridges to get together while others just build walls to get isolated... :(

Joshapd November 18th, 2006, 02:50 PM Copenhagen is really beautifull! the modern buildings are great too. I hope i will travel to Denmark soon.
markcode November 18th, 2006, 03:27 PM those are both beautiful and tidy cities
kickass923 November 18th, 2006, 04:40 PM well in terms of weather copenhagen has bad luck
its cold and dark but just a little to warm to have snow and ice
i think mr d will agree with me that a snowy day at -4c is better then a rainy day at 6C like so many of the days we have had lately
atleast when the is snow the city looks cool
FREKI November 18th, 2006, 04:58 PM i think mr d will agree with me that a snowy day at -4c is better then a rainy day at 6C like so many of the days we have had lately
atleast when the is snow the city looks coolNo way dude!
Snow is the worst thing a city with our climate can get, all it does is melt soaking everything and leaving behind small clusters of brown crap..
Even worse is that the melted snow freezes at night leaving a layer of ice making it highly dangerous to walk or drive around. :ohno:
Trust me the 6C plus with a few scattered showers are just fine - we will however normally have cloudy weather with clear nights when we get down to that temps, the rain normally comes when we like now are around the 10C all day...
The only good thing about snow is that it isn't here and wont be for a looong time ( hopefully! :) )
FASSE3 November 20th, 2006, 10:42 PM a very pretty city….thanks for the photographies

I wish you the best of luck! i've got a hope, that more gov gonna take a example from you, how to develop and organize live in the cities/countrys. Denmark, Sweden and other scandinawian countrys are the real proof of great standards of living. Hopefully my countrymen will take a look a bit closer to your ideas!

MigMeg June 30th, 2007, 04:52 PM And now they're planning on building a bridge between Copenhagen and Hamburg, isn't it so? COPENHAGEN|MALMÖ|HAMBURG - Three nations - one metropolis :)
FREKI June 30th, 2007, 04:57 PM ^The bridge will be from Rødby - a city on a completely different island than Copenhagen, located around 200km south of Copenhagen
And it will go to Puttgarden a German city 100+km northeast of Hamburg..
So we'll need a heck of a lot of sprawl before these two grow together :D

Mikelous June 30th, 2007, 08:04 PM Is that true that there are so dangerous districts in Malmo, that even ambulance must be escorted by the police???
FREKI June 30th, 2007, 10:17 PM Is that true that there are so dangerous districts in Malmo, that even ambulance must be escorted by the police???I very much doubt it..
Malmo does have a high concentration og middle eastern immigrants and therefor some of the problems that follow, but I'm very sure that the Swedish Police are in control of the things they need be in controlof..
There might have been occations friday night where punk kids have been trowing rocks at goverment vihecles - but even if police was needed that will be single incidents certainly nothing major and certainly not perminent..
dutchmaster June 30th, 2007, 10:21 PM Good pics Mr_D, Copenhagen looks great! :D
ilcapo July 1st, 2007, 12:25 AM hehe thanks mr d, i will check your homepage out..
about malmö.. no malmö is not detroit.. and although it has a rugged atmosphere and pretty high crime for european (or maybe just northern european standard?) i would'nt call it dangerous..
it's mostly exaggarations from "anti-immigrant"-type of people who claim malmö is extremely dangerous.
malmö has some of the best innercitys i've seen for such a small city, and is definatly one of my favorites. it has a working class atmosphere just like gothenburg.

Nightsky July 22nd, 2007, 11:31 PM My contribution. A cool picture from "Greater Malmö". Almost 1.2 million people in the Oresund Region live in a very rural enviroment. Not to mention all the pigs, sheeps and cows and so on..
The city centre of the rural town of Klippan. In the northern part of the Danish/Swedish SuperMetropolis!
http://my.opera.com/larseld/homes/albums/17356/Klippan.JPG
Klippan is not even close to Malmö. Actually it is very far from the Malmö/Copenhagen metro area, but pretty close to Ängelholm and Helsingborg.
Nice pics btw!
