El Jadida is a port city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. It has a population of 144,440 (2004 census). From the sea, El Jadida has a very un-Moorish appearance; it has massive Portuguese walls of hewn stone. The city exports beans, almonds, maize, chick-peas, wool, hides, wax, and eggs, and imports cotton goods, sugar, tea, rice, etc.

El Jadida was seized in 1502-1580 by the Portuguese, 1580-1640 to Spain ,1640-1769 Portugal. It was previously known as Mazagan. In 1769, It was reconquered by Morocco.

Now, El Jadida's beaches are polluted because of nearby ports and factories. El Jadida is also known for widespread prostitution.

1514 : la Couronne portugaise, dans un grand mouvement de reconquête des terres infidèles, fonde la citadelle de Mazagao, sur la côte marocaine. Les siècles passant, ce joyau colonial sombre dans l'oubli. Quand débute le siège de 1769, les 2000 Portugais de la forteresse ne peuvent faire face aux 120 000 soldats maures et berbères campés au pied des remparts. Alors, la couronne décide de déplacer - corps et biens - la ville de Mazagao. Au même moment, de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique, le Portugal entreprend la colonisation de l'Amazonie, nouvelle perle de l'Empire. Il faut des hommes pour cela, et voici une ville entière soudain disponible. La destination de Mazagao sera donc le Brésil.

Du XVIème au XVIIIème siècle, des contingents humains de Marocains ont été emmenés au Brésil par les Portugais. Il y a même dans l'Etat d'Amapa, au Nord du Brésil (à la frontière avec la Guyane Française), une ville qui s'appelle Nova Mazagao, un nom hérité de la ville marocaine d'El Jadida, l'ancienne Mazagao des Portugais. La civilisation marocaine a laissé des traces remarquables dans la formation de la société brésilienne : dans l'architecture (zelliges, moucharabiehs, utilisation de l'espace domestique), dans l'alimentation (couscous, tagines de Bahia), etc.

Mazagan -El Jadida is also one of the only cities in Morocco where the Jewish population exceeded the Muslim one. It had more Jewish inhabitants for most of its history until the 20th century.

I don't live there, but thats where our villages are. They aren't as nice looking as these Moroccan ones, but just the village life is relaxing.

Merci bcp @logic pour ce mini-reportage de la scala. Je l'avais visiter il y a des années de là. et je constate qu'elle a été rénovée. il n'y a plus de détritus qui pilulaient. Les murs ont été débarrassé de ces graffitis hideuses, genre "hmida love khaddouj" ;)
Il reste a s'occuper de l'artillerie.

sinon c'est une ville magnifique qui vaut le détours.
