TampaMike July 7th, 2009, 06:16 PM I wonder how long Tampa's went for. I would had went to Tampa's if I didn't work that night.
And yeah, besides some lights on and the red lights on top of the building, very hard to tell you have buildings right there. Shame that neither Tampa nor St.Pete really stress to the developers to add some lighting to their projects.

That's what I thought aswell, I was extremely impressed. Most of the hotels there were in historical buildings, which is rare to see in Tampa. Most were private company hotels, but Courtyard Marriott and a few others also were in thse buildings.
And I also enjoyed walking down Central Ave. and reading each of the plaques. There is so much potential for that stretch and I feel like it has been forgotten by the city. If you look at the pic in Part 2 with the "Elephant Trunk" shop, all of them shops are closed and boarded up. Which is a shame because it was a nice walk from Williams Park to where the Arts Center is located.

I was going to take some pics along MLK St. as well, but there were some people in the area that I didn't trust walking around with pocket full of cash, debit card, and my camera.
I-275westcoastfl July 8th, 2009, 06:23 AM Yes St.Pete has it's crime but you just need to be alert, most of the time people won't even take a second look at you. Of course if you stroll down the southside at night it might be a different story. St. Pete also has a crap load of gangs, so don't wear the wrong colors. I've walked around downtown at 2am by myself before, it wasn't bad.

It does look like Ovatian's base is gonna have some lighting affects to it though. Wish they did more to the building though, vertically.

lol yeah, thats what I was thinking after I was done walking. I had to change my shirt after walking around because it was so hot. But there isn't much you can do except taking breaks between walking and maybe grabbing a bottle of water or soda.

Actually, I like St. Pete's skyline and find it very satisfying. It's improved drastically in just the past 10 years. Most of the condo buildings look quite nice, and it's finally dense.

Yea I know that is the only part of South Pinellas that I'm aware of that is like that. It really is a cool little street, just neglected and the border of the ghetto and downtown.
DShenise August 21st, 2009, 03:54 AM I always liked Rosier Park. That area and the Banyan Tree neighborhood between 4th and 9th, to the north of I think like 9th Ave N. is very cool too. Too bad they go way down hill at night. I also always like the old folks apartments along Beach Drive. They have the old Florida feel I love.

As long as it's reinforced wood frame and meets hurricane code I guess it's fine. Most apartments are wood frame because it's cheaper and the companies want to get their return quicker...

DShenise May 31st, 2010, 11:34 PM Reinforced concrete has issues too. The biggest problem in Florida for any form of construction is weather proofing. Too much moisture rots wood, and rusts out the steel reinforcement. Then you throw in what moisture does to the wire lathe that backs stucco and then you get other issues. At least with frame construction you design for some movement of the structure. Masonry you try to minimize all movement. The problem with masonry is weight and the generally terrible foundation conditions available in coastal regions. Putting so much weight on sand creates great expense in doing it right. Its much easier to do framing right. And I worked for custom home builder for 15 years that did 90% of its work in masonry. Florida has always been an expensive place to build and rightly so.
