I live in Downtown St. Petersburg in the Madison....I just switched to Verizon and got the V phone with a 1.3mp camera, so now I don't have to carry a camera around and can take pics daily, to avoid posts...I will just edit this post everytime I update.

This is just a test image of a 1.3 megapixel 1280x960 compressed JPEG that has been "enhanced" for the web and shrunk down to 800x600 so that everyone can enjoy random Downtown St. Petersburg area only pics without eating up bandwidth or older monitor space. Any complaints just message me on here to avoid another post. Thanks...at least this image is an example of the average condo priced in the 350-400k(didn't pay anywhere near that price two years ago) range of a "young professional :cheers: ". The camera doesn't work very well at night and I'm not walking outside right now with an expensive 5mp professional camera from Sony with all of the wonderful crack head homeless that appear at night except weekends, then they stay near baywalk instead....The Madison is located across from The Progress Energy Center for the Arts(Mahaffey Theater/new Salvador Dali Museum/new Center Plaza and Waterfront Urban Park...all after knocking down the crappy old bayfront center). There are a ton of projects that are under construction and have broke some type of ground/secured financing...dozens of row/townhome developments along 4th Ave S north of 4th street and going on up to the trop *amazing, I didn't even expect this so fast*, USF Dorms (Finished), USF Parking Garage (Finished), Barnes & Noble(2 floors of the parking garage) on 5th Street with the 4th Starbucks in DT U/C, McNulty Lofts(finished and people moving in), one of the nations largest All Children's Hospital with the *Wal-Mart ER* U/C, The Sage U/C, Orion Condos U/C, The Signature U/C, The Edge (breaking ground), The Heights at Madison (last property, a dentist, sold a few months ago.), Sembler Tower on Beach (has bought up all properties and closed them down for planned demolition), Progress Energy Tower U/C (can be seen from just about everywhere downtown), Kessler Hotel/Condo(facing 2nd street, right now a dirt lot and a very unpleasant view of the side of the new Progress Energy Tower that will eventually connect to the other project but right now looks like a 12 story concrete wall with glass windows above that void. I hope Kessler starts soon, but its hard as hell to secure financing for condotels, especially with this being only the second brand in the upscale chain), tons of Central Ave Condos ranging from a few units to 100s actually U/C, The Ovation from JMC is also being fast tracked because of demand for these high-priced condos on Beach Drive. On the other side of town, which will be less updated because I usually take I-175 to anything I can't walk to at the moment but see at least 3 times or more a week...these projects are larger and going up fast. The W Plaza U/C, W Flats @ The Palladium (finished and great infill), 400 Beach Drive (now taller than the Presbyterian Tower? behind it), 4th Street hotel/condo project w/ addition to the historic part finishing fast, clearing land for another project I will explore when I have time this week, bayway seems to be totally dead(with city officials doubting anything will occur anytime soon on that property, hes going to turn it over like other properties he seems to be doing all over Pinellas..nix this project totally, it was starting to look like something on the strip in Las Vegas at last rendering anyway), The Arts Center Village(nice name for two large towers on central in the center of the core, not near water) is advertising all over downtown, Walker-Whitney is doing something with the property that is on 5th ave n and 4 st, they were going to sell it, I guess the two other W projects did so well...I can and will think and gather/explore the rest of the projects to give them an existence here. There are a lot of large and small projects I didn't even mention that I have no idea about other than dirt is moving at this point.

The little restaurant/pub next the Grayl's Hotel in the top picture is one of my favorite places to eat in downtown. Moon Under Water - It is a great English pub. I love their curry.

Parkshore Plaza looks ok, a little to much beach style for my taste in downtown. And the color sceme and how they put it together is iffy. Progress Energy looks good though and I'm hoping Beach Drive will too. St. Pete will begin to look like a big city when Edge, Signature, Bohemien, and Ovation are U/C. They are all more arcitectually urban style towers. But overall St. Pete is looking good.:banana: Does anyone think they could snap some pictures of Clearwater?

I actually could considering i live there might go to dowtown once and try to get a clearwater skyline pic of the dowtown and sand key its half the distance there than to st.pete. When i go though ill snap some pics next time i go.

St Pete is going to end up really complimenting what Tampa will have. It is going to give us a really nice big size metropolitan.. I am bias, but we really do live in one of the nicest regions in our country..

I'm biased, and I think we live in one of the most uncomfortable, dirtiest regions in the country. :-P

The area is alright - for a month or two out of the here.... the (cultural) drought is the bad part. But to each his own...

I define beauty differently than most, and thus I don't overlook the miles of sprawling ghettos or trailer parks. I don't even consider the beige homes-to-go of the new suburbs "nice," and I certainly don't think the tacky McMansions of Cheval are inspiring - let alone beautiful. Superficial beauty is hard to come across here. Finding anything deeper is rarer.

Like I said, aside from two months of the year, don't bother trying to enjoy the pittance of West Florida's natural beauty that remains unmolested by bulldozers and eager yuppies.

I know that I am often a cheerleader for this area. I grew up here, but moved away to go to college and worked elsewhere for many years before I came back.

The area does have both negatives and positives... and because I love this area, I am very quick to point out the positives and the things I enjoy.

But I have to admit, I appreciate it more now since I have lived in other cities, traveled a bit and moved back here. I assume from another post (you applying to college) that you are a young guy. I think it is probably pretty normal to want to get out of town and see the rest of the world.

My point is: Just maybe someday after you leave and live in other places, you will appreciate the area more.

I thought about the fact that I am young before I posted the message - I usually do consider what I say ahead of time... and in this instance, I'm confident I've travelled enough to make that call. I've visited 25 states and five countries - more than most my age. I'm certainly not an expert, but I feel like I've made a thoughtful consideration of what I *want* to see in an area and what is lacking here is certainly apparent. I'm actually from Western Michigan, where I was born and spent a chunk of my childhood (I've lived in Boston and have spent approximately four months in S. California over the past three years, too...) so I haven't been tainted completely by Florida... but I do see your point, and I respect it. I'm not ready to make up my mind on everything just yet, but I do feel confident that this community is certainly lacking in many departments crucial to me. The social environment I prefer largely defines the "merit" of a place in my books, so if I don't feel as if there is enough for me here.... I can't help but envy other places I've found with the desirable elements, right? Or so I've reasoned... :-P Anyway, I still strongly believe in what I said, even if I said it a bit spitefully earlier...

For an 18 yr old, your better than thou attitude is surely flowing....

Slow down, the vision you have now will not be the same when you are 21, 27, into your 30's and beyond. What defines an area to you now will definitely not be the same if you are lucky enough to raise a family of your own.

I moved here from Raleigh NC and it was the best decision of my life. This area offers many different things to many different types of people. Sure, some parts are "dirty" but then again, every city has those areas.

I drove to Chicago in March a number of years ago. Throughout the region, trees were brown, everything was muddy from melting snow, etc. I'm sure the area has its virtues, but relative to that, it was like Eden driving back into Florida at the end of the trip. T-Bay area in general is disappointing for its lack of planning and over-development in the suburbs, but I'll take it (or anywhere else in Florida). Florida population is all from somewhere else, so the culture is still developing. But geographically, beautiful in my book.

well maxim you live in Apollo Beach its basically a swampy exurb with mostly new suburban houses and some trailer parks or other places now and then. Overall excluding the new suburban development its a dirty area and your point of view comes from where you live.

If you live in an exurb or suburb of florida then basically you will say there is no culture and it is a very boring place because thats what those places are in florida. If i hadnt lived in St.Pete before i would think florida sucks. I live in north clearwater/palm harbor is the same a boring suburban area with nothing special about it and Apollo Beach well that must be "great" i drove through it before and yea not a place id live.

I go to school in the city, I work in the city, and I play in the city. I sleep in Apollo Beach. I've lived on the Pinellas Beaches and I've lived in DT St. Pete. BTW the new Memorial Bridge is an excellent vantage point for pictures, of both the beach and downtown. I recently went over it and was pleasently surprised at the view.

Those arent the ugliest hi-rises on sand key they actually add a variety to the same lookin boxes, somethin intresting although dont think im saying they are great because they really arent.

I don't blame you Jason. My dad bought a camera recently and he ended up taking video instead of a still photo. The problem with a lot of digital cameras is that they have so many controls and such that its hard to figure out what everything does initially. My camera is not so bad, but I have a problem of steadying the camera when I take my pictures.

The photo of I-375/St Pete isn't bad. Its a little blurry yes, but not bad. It would probably be better if it was a sunny day as opposed to a stormy day. Just to point out, you can clearly see the lovely deck work that FDOT did on the bridge after that tanker fire.

The ISO was really high in the shot, one of the reasons it appears blurry/grainy.

I think image compression didn't help. I thought I was shooting a tiff when I took it, but when I downloaded, they were jpegs using a fairly high compression.

All jokes aside, it is an incredible picture, I don't think its that blurry but thats because I'm on a laptop so my images don't appear as they should.
I very much enjoy the shot from the interstate, its awesome.

I cleaned it up a little and made some level/exposure adjustments.

That's a nice picture and one of my favorite views driving into St. Pete. Although the second cleaned up pic "looks" better, the first is actually a more accurate color and contrast of a stormy evening with the sunset behind. I'm kinda anxious for the St. Pete Times to come out with an updated pic and future skyline like they've done the past couple of years.

^Yeah, that pic is clearer, but it took out the eerie yellowy glow... If anything, the picture needs the blue taken down a few percent to more accurately portray what I saw with my eye.

the skyline is certainly more impressive than it was a decade ago, and it'll certainly be even more impressive in about 2-3 years, when the current wave is put up.

this looks like a usual day in downtown...I would say Downtown St. Petersburg has the most "urban" feel to it because of the number of permanent people that live, work, and spend a lot of their entertainment dollars in downtown too. I see most of the same people on a daily basis when shopping/running errands and working downtown, I even have some of the shop owners around the core that live in my condo building that will come by with food or what not. It definitely gives you the feeling you know the city much more so than just having a property in one of its zip codes. This is the only city in Florida I have lived in where I get free food from neighbors that own or work at a restaurant downtown and spark a conversation without the need to be trashed...every other city/district is usually a trashed person that spews out what they own and how much it costs for them to maintain their image, SOHO being just about the worst

Usually you can look at the bottom of the page whne viewing the thread in the "Similar threads" box and that's where I'll usually see similar threads to be merged. Only thing is of course the 2nd thread has to be already made, and in this case St. Petersburg shares the name with its Russain counterpart. ;)

Yeah, obviously I was aware of that, and even checked the bottom of the St Pete DN thread just in case. I can't believe that I missed it to be honest, because it's not like I don't have years of experience scanning such lists for threads... That search sucks though, because of how it works... I know of a better way of doing it, but this software won't work that way. (not going to try and explain)

^Ha, that is a bit odd. I've never developed any, but I definitely know the structure. I have done paid content sites though, for Photoshop training. Getting ready to do one that integrates in with vBulletin actually.

Thanks... My daughter is 2 years old. We had a fun time celebrating New Year's in Downtown St Pete this year. It was nice not having to drive as we stayed at a hotel downtown.

Here's a view from the south penthouse at 400 Bch Drive. You can see Ovation coming out of the ground and Signature reaching for the sky. If I had several million laying around cluttering up the floor... Where does one in the $60k~ a year income live downtown?:wallbash:

Its pictures like these that make me homesick. I started hanging out Downtown when I was going to USF-Bayboro. It was nice then, but is really, really nice now. It is truly a great place to live/work. I miss Thursday nights at Tavern on the Asphalt followed by an evening at the Big Catch.

Those pics make me miss St.Pete too damn it just keeps getting better! I gotta make it down there sometime!

Nice shots. I love Fort De Soto.

Also, if anyone ever gets the chance, Egmont Key is very nice as well. They've got a nice calm beach on the Eastside and wavier beach more for boarding on the westside. Seeing the fort, lighthouse and the town ruins is cool too. You can only get there by boat.

In '06 we stayed at the Quality Inn 'on the Beach' in Clearwater Beach. That picture is what I saw from my balcony first thing in the morning that first full day. I had to take that picture!

Hope you don't mind Smiley but the pics being resized look a lot better lol. Is it me or Parkshore Plaza looks like the tallest building in many pics, must be the bulkiness to it. But from my pic on the last page of the angle from the highway it looks to be 3rd tallest Also its a shame they cheaped out and didn't include any night lighting.

I have looked through this photo thread. This place looks very beautiful, you guys should be proud of your city. The lush shade trees mixed with bright tropical plants in the urban setting with beautiful architecture is awesome. I hope to visit someday.

Nice pics, but for the amount of time they have been working on the Johns Pass bridge they could have built a tunnel. That project has been ongoing for at least five years.

That banner pic is great. Like a nice "Welcome to St. Pete" as I bring my last load of stuff across bay to my new home.

The banner looks nice - way better than the Tampa banner that was up not too long ago.

St.Pete , fla has grown , almost as large as Ft.lauderdale where I just moved from and retired to my new home and 2 acre property with my wife in Spring Hill, just 1 hour north of St. Pete / Tampa Just off the SunCoast Parkway and Spring Hill Drive.
It's great to be back on here with all; my Florida Friends that I missed so much these past 2 months after losing my old 7 year old Windows XP computer, and now have a Windows Vista computer I just bought to get back on here for my 4th Anniversary Here Yesterday:cheers:in the # 1 SkyscraperCity.com forums,. Thanks Chuck, the Miami forumers were wondering where you were for the longest time. If you ever get the chance to go to downtown St.Pete you should, one of the best places to see urban wise in the Tampa Bay area.

Visit Safety Harbor too Chuck. It's one of those sleepy little towns along the waterfront in northern Pinellas. I went there the other day and thought it was very nice, pretty quiet too. I have some photos forthcomming...

Ah its empty... infact a lot of DT Clearwater is, except now Cleveland St looks pretty but its still mostly empty and Station Square is a dissapointment.

Awesome! Thanks for the beautiful pictures. Clearwater right now is still in a huge transition with construction going on and many delayed or dead projects. Besides that and other issues, Clearwater is my favorite place in the whole world!

I was under the Memorial Causeway snapping pictures for a photosynth on Saturday.
It was a beautiful day for a ride to the beach on bicycle.

Yea it really was a nice beach day on saturday, which is why I was snapping pics of Clearwater and my car.

Wow, that area sure has changed quite a bit since my last visit. I remember spending my "honeymoon" :kiss: on Clearwater Beach, which must have been over 10 years ago!!!

Very cool. Its a obvious that Clearwater has taken the need to update things from time to time seriously. If only my hometown of St.Pete Beach had a similar vision.

This thing is immediately adjacent to the trop and next to a huge park complex across the interstate there so its not exactly a bad area.... and if you are wondering, those are indeed windows that are taped and cardboarded up. And people live here still and this is about the most disgusting filth in St. Pete

And then we have this architectural "gem". Two things stand out about this building. 1) The building is not aligned perpendicular to the main road, but is facing parallel. So as one drives north toward the building ALL you see is that massive gross wall. 2) On the massive wall, I noticed as I drove away that the area in the pic you cannot see, hidden by the over hang, is a small ugly after thought of a window of some sort that looks more like a cut out of bland stained glass.

There are a couple other gross ones like the City Gym building, or the uhual building...but I think these are the cream of the crop right here!

Well the first one I agree completely, it's ugly and outdated! The screen feature goes over the parking garage, but in a way the screen feature has made somewhat of a come back like the NY Times Building in NYC. The second one... well... it's a housing project what do you expect? If you think that's filth you need to drive around some parts of south St.Pete for a little while lol. Oh and btw great pics, I like how you got all the historical buildings in.

Great pics!! I live so close to Safety Harbor but I've never bothered to take many pics of it, to me it's not that special.

I took these pics at the begining of August, just before my fall semester began. I wanted to get out of the house, but it was a crappy day. So I just drove around Pinellas for most of the day, and I wound up in Safety Harbor.

this building was actually senior housing and was sold to developers in a package deal to rehab the building to market rate apartments or condos...I am pretty sure the government has already moved all people out of the building and into new senior housing and mixed-income complexes...

Also, why did the church land turn from a dense tower to a suburban office complex?? Pass it everyday on 4th and this project should be in some east lake/trinity suburban office complex.

I agree, St.Petes is pretty bad, Tampa is okay. Oh and hart just a tip next time set the camera down on a surface in night mode and use the time to take a pic without flash, it will come out much better without a tripod.

What grocery store out there has three entrances out on the front, and I mean ON THE FRONT?

And never have I seen a deli department right near the middle of the store, on its own footing.

Yea lol I agree and the frozen food aisle cracks me up, I asked the manager if we ran out of numbers. But yea the layout is very poor and they use the space poorly. One thing to remember is the store was a Jewel Osco back in the day hence the strange layout and large size.

Britton Plaza has a much better layout under Publix. It seems like for your store, they did such a poor job, whereas Britton, they did a pretty neat job. I don't understand why such a discrepancy.

And unfortunately the economic downturn and housing crash has pretty much killed or halted any project that at least have some curves to them.

Curves aren't going to help the oppressive massing currently required by the zoning regs.

The good thing is that it isn't too late to change the rules to zoning that results in a more attractive tourist district.

I like most of the newer condos and the sandpearl hotel. however, the shape of the hyatt looks awful. the building mass just isn't right. the base is way too tall and the top does not seem to fit onto it. that's because of the stupid agreement between the developer and the city to put 400 public parking spaces into the building.

I was out on Clearwater Key today... It's kinda sad to see how many shops and hotel rooms have been lost to demolitions, only to be replaced by surface parking, or a fenced off lot of weeds. Aside from the beach itself (which was painfully gravelly. Wear shoes!) and the short little beachwalk (which was dead, since it connects nothing to nothing, but at least it looks nice), there is almost no vibrancy whatsoever. It was like showing up early for a date and seeing the girl 1/3 of the way through her makeover.

I don't find the beach sand all that bad at Clearwater. Of course it isn't Caladesi nice, but I have been on beaches way far worse.

A shoreline with more gravelly sand, crushed shells and shards of glass than Clearwater Beach probably can't even be referred to as a beach in geological terms... :lol:

I'll take any of beaches ya'll have down in the Bay area because the ones we have in N.E. Florida are garbage. :lol:

I like Clearwater Beach. Shells don't bother me at all. But I am getting so mad at all these inconsiderate people leaving broken glass, all kinds of trash and cigarette butts behind, even if there is a trash basket just 10 steps away.

I don't understand the developers who knocked down working hotels to build condos before they even had secured that the construction will take place. The Adams Mark and Holiday Inn were nice hotels and I am sure everybody would benefit from them if they still were in place.
