Proton City tagged as “City of the Future”, is a new township with industrial, commercial and residential activities spread over 4,000 acres (16 km²). It is located about 5 km north of Tanjung Malim, a town in Perak, Malaysia, and houses the state-of-the-art RM1.8 billion Proton car assembly plant.

To be fully developed by 2020, Proton City aims to be home to Malaysia’s automobile industry. Undertaken by Proton City Development Corp Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between DRB-Hicom Bhd and Proton Bhd, it started in 1996 with an initial investment of RM2.5 billion, beginning with the construction of the Proton plant. The Proton plant has a workforce of more than 2,000 and most of them are expected to live in the area. When Proton City is fully developed, it would have a population of about 240,000.

The first settlement in the area - 252 units of apartments - were formally handed over to the buyers recently. These apartments have common facilities that include car and motorcycle parking bays, children’s playground, BBQ area, car wash areas, mosque and a nursery/kindergarten on the ground floor of each block and a multipurpose hall. Parcels 19 and 20 when completed in 2007 will have 1,091 apartments, 336 units of single- and double-storey terrace houses, 86 semi-detached houses, 37 bungalows and 36 shop-offices.

Proton City is also expected to be home to students and staff of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), which a few years ago was known as Sultan Idris Teachers’ College, one of the country’s oldest teachers’ training institutions. UPSI, occupying 800 acres (3.2 km²) within Proton City, is expected to have a student population of 20,000 within four years.

The next phase of development at Proton City is the industrial component, which will see the construction of 81 factory lots for the national car’s vendors. Other public amenities such as schools, mosque, park, recreational club and man-made wetlands of 24 acres (97,000 m²) with a large lake, water storage towers, air quality control station, fire station and power station will also be built in the coming months.

Modern technology will be put to full use, with a command centre that will monitor all smart home systems. There will be intelligent traffic control, telemedicine, e-commerce and other “k-society” amenities and services integrated into living within Proton City.

I heard from my friend that Proton has over stock of 250,000 units of new produced cars of various models. Proton can actually stop production for at least one year and still have enough supply. If this is going to happen, will this Proton-city be a ghost town??

Proton to make 50,000 cars at Tg Malim in FY07

Proton Holdings Bhd will maintain its target of producing between 40,000 and 50,000 cars at its Tanjung Malim plant for its financial year (FY) ending March 31, 2007 despite declining sales.

Its manufacturing director Datuk Kamarulzaman Darus believes that the production volume would be justified by the continued demand for Proton cars. The Tanjung Malim plant makes GEN.2, Savvy and Satria Neo.

He added that Proton is also counting on demand from first-time buyers of cars.

“We will produce between 40,000 cars and 50,000 cars (at Tanjung Malim) this financial year from about 40,000 cars in FY06 despite the tougher car market environment,” Kamarulzaman told reporters after delivering 50 new Satria Neo cars to its customers in Tanjung Malim on July 27.

He said the Tanjung Malim plant has a maximum capacity of 150,000 units on double shifts.

On the demand for Neo, he said orders have exceeded 2,000 units since its launch in June with over 1,000 cars delivered to its customers.

Kamarulzaman said Proton would launch a new model next year but did not elaborate.

He said the market is sluggish as customers are wary after the announcement of the National Automotive Policy and the new free trade agreement with Japan.

“Customers want to see if car prices might actually drop before wanting to buy new cars,” he said.

On Proton’s vendor consolidation programme, Kamarulzaman said the national car company is on track to reduce its vendors to no more than 50 from 275 vendors currently.

It's nice but it's a ghost town.....

At least the town's good facilities would benefit students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris.Hope the town seek other economic opportunities besides the ailing car industry.

Bear in mind too that we Malaysians are paying way over the norm prices for our cars on the road, just so Proton can 'make a living' Also paying taxes of all sorts, which will be utilised to 'help out' Proton in times of trouble. Again, :ohno:

What a beautiful setting! Town is definitely a ghost town...lifeless but has great promises, it'll take a while before eventually come alive. The facility tho...quite a waste, no urgent need.

"take a while" - i think the "a while" is maybe another 50 years.

Looking at how Proton perform now, they have to really struggle to get the town fully functional.

Regardlless of what happened to Proton City, Tanjung Malim now has fair share of development in the northern part of the town, new shophouses are built along federal route 1 and with the extension of KTM Komuter to Tanjung Malim, i think things are getting better in Tanjung Malim, which faced its downtime during the completion of NSE....

i like the mountains as the backdrop. i studied A-level in Lembah Beringin, about 10km from Tanjung Malim, which has almost the same scenery. Missing it so much now. :)

That is my opinion that the water is brownish, and i am concerned about the environments. Proton might have problem with budget and no money to pay Kualiti Alam, then they started to throw scheduled waste into the river, who know?

Somehow I agree with cooltemper, with the introduction of Proton car in Malaysia since 1985, it has been ruining our lives by imposing high duties on foreign cars. Some people have to pay car loan up to 9 years and these people are suffering paying up their loan.

Can you imagine how ridiculous that you have to pay nearly RM20K for gear box replacement for a Proton Wira and this amount can get you a new car in a lot countries?

Somehow I agree with cooltemper, with the introduction of Proton car in Malaysia since 1985, it has been ruining our lives by imposing high duties on foreign cars. Some people have to pay car loan up to 9 years and these people are suffering paying up their loan.

Proton City have nothing to do with Proton, then don't call it Proton city lar, give the original name back to it lar, Tanjung Malim. This name was so nice to spell and so nice to read. So why change to Proton City? Sick!

UPSI gets new museum

THE Suluh Budiman building in Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Tanjung Malim, has the distinct honour of housing the country’s National Education Museum.

The RM9.8mil museum was officially opened by university chancellor Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Bainun yesterday.


Work on the museum started in August 2009 and completed in December last year.

It has 19 exhibition galleries, two reading and research rooms complete with a computerised system and a curator room.

The Suluh Budiman building, with its built up area of 3,239 sq m, was opened by the then Sultan of Perak Sultan Iskandar Shah on Nov 29, 1922.

In her message in the Pameran Payung Negara coffee table book, Tuanku Bainun hoped the museum would be able to record and illustrate the glorious history of national education in order to instil an understanding that today’s excellence is the outcome of struggles by past educators.

“I pray that this museum will continue to progress and can serve as an educational institution in a historic and meritorious institution of higher learning,” she added.

UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Aminah Ayob said the idea to have the museum was proposed even before UPSI was set up.

“The museum became a reality when the Higher Education Ministry allocated funds under the Ninth Malaysia Plan to rehabilitate and re-develop the heritage building,” she said in her speech.

Besides being a tourist attraction, Dr Aminah hoped that the museum would be used by students and researchers as a resource centre.

“We will digitalise the exhibition materials to be unloaded into our UPSI website to enable the world to learn of our country’s education,” she said.

Among those present at the launch were Raja Datuk Seri Azureen Sultan Azlan Shah, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and state secretary Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Hashim.

In conjunction with the museum’s opening, an exhibition entitled Pameran Payung Negara will be held for three months.

The exhibition will focus on the world’s royal institutions.

IPOH: DRB-Hicom Bhd will expedite development of the Proton
City in Tanjung Malim by injecting over RM1 billion in the next five years, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said today.

He said the laid-back area would be transformed into a vibrant automotive town and a Proton car manufacturing hub.

Currently, only 30 per cent of the 1,618 hectares have been developed, he said.

"Another landmark project will be implemented in the sleepy-hollow Tanjung Malim," he told reporters after chairing the weekly state executive council meeting.

Zambry said the Proton City, where Proton cars are being assembled now, was developed in 1996.

He said the state government had conferred with DRB-Hicom on plans to develop the area.

The Menteri Besar said various infrastructures would be provided in the area, including building an access road to Proton City from the North-South Expressway.

"We want to build the access road to enable Proton cars to be brought out of the Proton City. I hope the Malaysia Highway Authority will consider the matter favourably," he said.

Zambry said a commercial centre and a school would also be built in the area.

Proton City's development would lend added value to the area, which also houses Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris, he added. -- BERNAMA

Exco Kerajaan Negeri, Datuk Hamidah Osman berkata, hasil perbincangan antara Kerajaan Negeri dengan DRB-Hicom memutuskan mengenai perancangan jangka panjang kawasan itu.

“Pihak DRB-Hicom membentangkan pelan yang lebih komprehensif dan mereka mahu merealisasikan misi menjadikan Proton City sebagai bandar automotif negara yang kita rancangan sebelum ini.

“Dalam perancangan itu ia melibatkan bukan sahaja pembangunan dari segi keadaan sekeliling tetapi kebolehpasaran produk Proton malah kita sudah pun mencapai persetujuan pihak tertinggi Proton bahawa kesemua model baru kereta mereka bakal dibuat di Tanjung Malim,” katanya kepada Sinar Harian.

Hamidah berkata, Kerajaan Negeri sentiasa menyalurkan bantuan dan buah fikiran dalam memastikan Proton City menjadi pusat pengeluaran utama Proton.

“Kerajaan Negeri menghargai komitmen dan kesungguhan pengurusan baru DRB-Hicom untuk merealisasikan visi menjadikan Proton City sebagai bandar automotif negara namun kita mohon agar janji itu dapat dipenuhi.

“Ketiadaan akses laluan masuk dan keluar secara terus dari kawasan berkenaan melalui Lebuhraya Utara Selatan seperti yang disuarakan mereka akan kita beri perhatian.

“Malah mereka juga memohon kawasan yang dirasakan sesuai kerana mereka mahu membawa vendor-vendor di Shah Alam ke Bandar Proton,” katanya.
