I read the article in the halifax herald about Developers opening a Container terminal in the strait of canso recently. Great project along with the Bear Head LNG terminal for Port Hawkesbury, northern Nova Scotia and the Province in general . It will certainly be a facility that will be able to take larger ships then halifax harbour will in the future decades.

well I dont know anything about the container terminal their building there, but I doubt they will be taking larger ships there anytime soon, once ships get larger, they'll just dredge the bottom of the harbour. Besides, there are actually three 65 tonne capacity post panamax cranes going to fairview within the next year, ordered by Cerescorp from Liebherr in Killarney, Ireland. But all in all, I think a container terminal would probably be a fairly logical thing for that area regardless.

Actually with the strait of canso they dont need any dredging compared to Halifax. That is not a slap at halifax harbour just the port in canso is much deeper and only became realistic since the canso causeway in 1955. 18 metres is low tide deep in Halifax and I beleive by my contacts with Statia Point Tupper that they are over 100 feet in depth at low tide.
Halifax harbour is over twnety feet deeper then new york harbour and boston harbour and they have to dredge for post panamax shipping to get to 50 feet.
The development could be to increase capacity from the east cost of canada in general with an area with a ice free deep water harbour and plenty of cheap land compared to urban centres like Halifax, Boston or New York.
The facility at Statia Point tupper is very unique in that two supertankers can dock there at once very close to the shore.
As the manager of that facility once complained about not having a blockbuster video in port hawkesburg unlike his hometown of chicago. A local engineer said to him "well chicago doesnt have a pier that can dock two super tankers at once". The Facility Manager said "Yes that ture and why I am here"
