I always had a feeling that 85 floors was too tall for this kindof narrow parcel of land purchased from the British Embassy, but 50 floors is great if its a cool hi-quality project ! :colgate:

yep I remember there's a model of the proposed Ploenchit Arcade towers at the showroom (is it still there?) there are 2 towers about 35-40 storeys each.

I also hope that they build sth that would rival bai yoke at this plot... $92 m.. a lot of money... at least a 70 or 80 story tower... itd just be perfect

yes, the height doesn't really bother me. I think the design of the building should be brilliant.

Well, Central is run by a group of smart people. I hope they know what theyre doing. The total development cost could run upwards of 7 Billion Baht. It's going to take a long time to break even.
It will be intereseing to see a luxury hotel like The Oriental and The Peninsula in the middle of the city instead of the riverside as we are used to.

And you know why they wouldn't allow Thais anywhere without visas? If you don't you are too blind/nationalistic

yea, because we are all third world prostitutes/drug traffickers/etc. that's the main point, sometimes when you're applying for a visa the way the treat you, its as if they make that assumption simply based on your nationality before all else. of course there is a reason for it, but that's still not right. then again, maybe all bureaucrats are megalomaniacs who love to assert their authority........

of course the way thai immigration assume foreigners are all sex tourists/capitalists bent on taking over doesn't help either.

there will only be cinemas in this project due to space concerns. but it is going to be the most luxurious one in town. this means all first class cinema club. the concept of the design will be based on a couture designer similar to the Versace or the Armani Hotels in Dubai.

This is a Press Release set to go on about this week
so you guys have a preview until 6PM.

CRC is the largest retail group in Thailand and has
established itself in the sector as the most innovative and
progressive retail provider, developing original upscale and
specialty formats to match the latest market needs.

For this project, currently under the pseudonym of ‘Central
Man U’ due to the CRC Chairman’s preference for a certain
premier league football team, the group is working with
UK-based Future Systems Architects.

The project is set to become one of the most iconic and
distinctive buildings in Bangkok, with a challenging and
innovative design. The development comprises seven levels
of modern retail space with an unequalled amount of open
areas and walkways in the mall areas.

At one end of the development will be a 30 storey five star
hotel which folds around an open central atrium and slopes
in a gentle and graceful form on two of the building facades,
following the architectural concept of a twisted figure-of-eight.

The scheme also requires a five level basement for car
parking and lower ground hotel and retail space with two
bridges connecting it to the existing Chidlom department
store and Bangkok skytrain system.

BASED ENTIRELY ON MY OPINION.
I hate this building! With its uneven shape and strange floorplan,
it is really hard to fit things in. I was trying to place four large
rectangular rooms into the floorplan and I couldn't do it due to
its slopeness. So now I ended up having four uneven strange looking
room with one flat 90 degree end.

Since they cant fit two lobbies in that building so they would

It could look good but it is heavily reliant on finding the right materials that can carry such a heavy sculptural design...And why in God's name call it Man U..... actually if they call it the Henry Moore it would make more sense, as it's a very sculptural looking building, akin to some of Henry Moore's sculptures and Henry Moore is a famous english sculptor...I would go for alibaster white stone, smooth and gleaming in the sunlight ..but that's highly unlikely due to its costs...
I agree with CooperNZ in someways ...it is a shame that the land was not used for say a more traditional set of thai merchant houses, the shopping centre so desperately needs a balance now of architecture and retail, old and new....
On another thought ... maybe if they joined up the swoop into an oval they could turn the top of the building to be like the ex Fiat building in Torino where Fiat tested cars on the roof top, and you could have a racing circuit hiogh up in BKK...beat that Singapore...cool !!!

new lifestyle shopping complex projected to open in 2012 or 2013.....4 or 5 floors of retail? at the old embassy grounds..... to be designed by the same designers as "Selfridges" store

this is a pic of Selfridges London....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/speedracer7/Oxford-Street-463x3181.jpg

todays Bangkok Post:
Central to move cautiously this year
By: PITSINEE JITPLEECHEEP

Central Department Store Co (CDS), the country's largest operator, will proceed more cautiously this year with plans to open department stores and instead shift its investment budget to refreshing its existing outlets. It will also focus on its department stores overseas, in particular in China.

Yuwadee: All prime areas now covered "We will spend money for efficiency and productivity. Each investment has to contribute value to our customers and our firm," said president Yuwadee Chirathivat.

With the strategy, the company will open only two new stores over the next five years, including the latest development on a land plot next to Central Chidlom, bought in 2006 from the British Embassy.

Over the last few years, the company has invested continually, adding two branches in Chaeng Watthana and Pattaya in December and January respectively.

Mrs Yuwadee said the company would spend time this year designing its new lifestyle shopping complex next to Central Chidlom. It has hired Future System, the UK-based firm that designed upmarket Selfridges stores in the UK for the project.

The new complex is slated to open in late 2012 or early in 2013, with its building of four to five storeys expected to be a Bangkok landmark.

The company still has no concrete plan for its other prime plot on Rama IV Road where the Suan Lum Night Bazaar is located today."

I think you will find the Selfridges in Birmingham is the more likely inspiration for Central, and that is a truly spectacular building. Don't know if it would work in that location, however, as it lacks the visual impact that surrounding pedestrianised streets would give it.

PADTHAI
March 17th, 2009, 07:23 AM
What Bangkok is missing is more family run business that produce real quality stuff - like the Italian/Jewish food delis in New york, and like the French bakeries. I am sick of all the corporate stuff staffed by minimum wage 'nongs' who know NOTHING about their products!

Playground was a great idea but too expensive. If they relaunched today with the same location but used upcoming young Thai designers who can sell for 200-300 baht for a T-shirt, not 3,000 (!) then they would do very well IMHO.

I think they should differentiate the place by putting some entertainments that the competitors around the area is missing eg., laser trek, ice skate, mini golf or anything else more excited lol.
Rather than just 'branded' stores where you can find anywhere in the world/Bkk or if branded then some 'new' brand (both mid&high end brand not just high) would be good.

Sorry for staying off topic, but that's interesting :)
I am quite unsure of Foster's proposal as well, especially the walking bridge which looks great but seems to be lacking a purpose
My personal faves are BIG, Nouvel (but without the teapot thing) and Wingårds
The problem with Scandinavia is that people want to preserve anything, ANYTHING! Even the current design, which is essentially a highway interchange right next to the medieval parts of Stockholm. So this project has been delayed for decades already! So for now we are stuck with this (http://www.yimby.se/2008/03/stockholm-capital-of-scan_507.html) :(

Am I the only one who thinks they've tried too hard to make something revolutionary and failed.

I wish they constructed a structure with solar panels or something else awesome. This is not the future of modern design. It looks like it belongs in 80's anime.

I dont see anything special, just another white elephant modern style of the westin sukumvit and such, i agree that it should have been a land mark development and Central should have been leading with creativity and green modern efficient building...

But then again, thats just my opinion:nuts:

The shoe building looks quite ok, but not quite up there with selfridges london or the other FS stuff sadly.

So is it confirmed now that Ritz Carlton will be on the other corner, and Kempinski won't be at Siam paragon but instead will be here?

CRC to start Embassy development next year

By: PITSINEE JITPLEECHEEP
Published: 6/05/2009 at 12:00 AM
Newspaper section: Business

Central Retail Corporation (CRC), the country's largest retail chain, expects to start a development costing 10-15 billion baht at the British Embassy site next to Central Chidlom next year.

The planned 30-storey building has been inspired by the infinity symbol.

The planned development, confirmed at a recent meeting of top executives, is expected to take at least three years to complete.

The nine-rai plot was purchased from the British Embassy in early 2006 through Tiang Chirathivat Real Estate, an affiliate of the Central Group.

The planned 30-storey building will include retail and entertainment areas as well as a six-star hotel. The company has been negotiating with international chains including Ritz Carlton to find a company to manage the hotel.

A Central Group executive, who asked not to be named, said the new development would be linked with the Central Chidlom department store and the Phloenchit BTS station to improve traffic flow.

He said CRC would develop what the area needs and what complements Central Chidlom, the group's flagship store.

"We will continue to invest in our new development next door to Chidlom. But we are not in a hurry for this project and want to make it a new landmark for Bangkok and a must-see for visitors to Thailand."

Under an earlier business plan, CRC chief executive Tos Chirathivat said the project would have a maximum usable space of 160,000 square metres.

The new development would echo shopping destinations such as New York, Paris and Singapore and create a leading shopping street linking Sukhumvit, Phloenchit, Ratchaprasong and Siam Square.

The London firm Amanda Levete Architects has designed the building based on the symbol for infinity, which reflects the group's vision of dynamic development. The facade will use reflective materials whose colours can be adjusted using advanced computer software.

I agree with K. Hitesh. I can see the logic from Central's perspective in tying up this location and building now while construction prices are lower, but I don't see where the customers will come from. Saying "lifestyle" doesn't change the fact it will be another pretty mall in an area with too any malls already. They need to start differentiating them and specialising in different things...

like I said before, I hope the anchors stores in the podium levels (under the skybridge to Central Chidlom) are fresh and new to Thailand like:

Harrods,
Galeries Lafayette,
Åhléns,
Bergdorf Goodman,
Barney's,
Neiman Marcus,
Macy's,
Sogo (like the one in Taipei not the one in Causeway Bay HK),
Harvey Nichols,
Nordstroms,
Takashimaya,
Selfridges,
Bloomingdales....

also can an ice skating/hockey rink fit in??

maybe also a Gold's Gym...even Manila has them, why cant we :D or a Pure Fitness like that cool one in IFC Tower in Hong Kong...

definitely a Japanese/Korean/Taiwanese/HK manga & designer toy/robots/comics/accessories zone....

an indy/local/specialty/cult/off beat flim cinema zone?

Thai hill tribes and local crafts/products/foods exhibition area and stores in fresh presentations/designs and fusions :okay:

a Sony Metreon (or similar type) zone

Always a man of wise words Mr Padthai.
Which is why I think they the Siam market area should be saved and more individual enterprises encouraged + the night bazar to be relocated near the klon san sep where the old BKK bazar used to be and is curently being demolished, back end of Manhattan Chidlom and the electricity board
