Since the topic of demolished historic building has been brought up several times in the last week, perhaps a thread on the topic might be good.

The Bellevue Hotel on the corner of George and Alice Street, constructed in 1886 and demolished in 1979 by the State Government, is one the most frequently mentioned examples. There isn’t even a building there, just the courtyard to the 80 George St offices.

The Supreme Court – The site of the current building, completed in 1878 and lost in the 1960’s due to arson.

Courier Building built in 1887 on the corner of Edward and Queen Streets was replaced by the commonwealth bank.

The 2 buildings between Macarthur Chambers and the Post office fit in quite well. The one closest to the Post office was a Commonwealth Bank.

The Qld Assurance Society, just behind the fountain. Another arson.

I also think that the older Victoria Bridge should have been kept

I'm not sure the old Victoria Bridge could have remained though, probably not enough lanes and too old.

That's not right, the bridge before it was washed away in the 1893 floods, the other one was the replacement from 1897 to the present bridge in 1969.

Does anyone know when the two buildings between MacArthur and the Post office were demolished? They really fit in very well....

They should have used both bridges...

Damnit, its such a shame that so many great buildings were lost. And the old Victoria Bridge should have been kept as a pedestrian bridge. I guess they didn't think about that back in the 60's.

And the old Law Courts were fantastic. So much better than the shit that is there now.

Exactly my thought - they're probably the building I would most like.

I think they were demolished either in the late 80's or early 90's. There was that proposal for a 60 level office tower, I forget its name but it had a steep pitched roof on all 4 sides...quite striking.
There was much debate at the time about this as all those buildings alond Queen St complimented each other, basically the entire block along that side of the street. Bit of a shame really.
