View Full Version : Sofitel Water Tower, Chicago
Chi-town April 29th, 2003, 05:39 AM Completed in 2002, by Parisian architect Jean-Paul Viguier: 30 floors, 347ft (106m).
Facts from skyscrapers.com:
- The building is a triangular tower with a knife-like south edge which leans 33 feet (1 foot per floor) over Chestnut Street.
- The windows are arranged in an unusual pattern, like stacked bricks. The original design called for simple stripes instead.
- The triangular plan leaves space for an atrium lobby on the southwest portion of the lot. The atrium has a large curved window.
- Located on the edge of a small triangular park, between Rush and Wabash Streets.
- For a few minutes before high noon, the sun shines on both sides of the building.

And please remember folks, this is the "Open Forum". It really doesn't make much sense to grade on height here... none of the buildings in this forum are very tall. If I were grading on height in this forum, no building would ever get above a 6.
Chad April 29th, 2003, 06:47 AM Incradibly beutiful!!...European looking building in the middle of an Truely American City!!....9.5/10
chongqinghero April 29th, 2003, 01:24 PM taller will be nicer!

renell April 29th, 2003, 06:24 PM the buildings looks like the european style building in my head, interesting design, but lacks the height 6.5
Chi-town April 29th, 2003, 10:03 PM Not to nitpick, but what's the point of downgrading a building because of height in this forum? None of the buildings in the Open Forum have height... that's the point. I could understand grading on height if it was in the same forum as buildings that were 1000+ feet, but here it's just silly...
Mr. Detroit April 29th, 2003, 11:08 PM Very good point Chi-town.....I like it....9/10

Jasonhouse May 1st, 2003, 10:08 PM Yes. Knocking a building for a "lack of hieght" in the Open Forum is ludicrous. Rate on architectural merit and your preference for styling, but not hieght.
IMO, this is one of the more notable towers built in Chicago in recent memory. I think that it is an outstanding design. Very cutting edge, but done so in a way so that it retains a high level of functionality.

Chi-town July 28th, 2003, 10:04 PM I don't think it looks Asian at all :? It doesn't have a spire, and it's clad in white, not all colored glass. Plus, the architect is French.
nice pics BGT

This building doesn't look Asian AT ALL!
Anyway, I can't say I really like this building. That cladding looks cheap and the placement of the windows is very weird.
Still not horrible, this kind of building would work in many cities.
