Its NOT a motorway...brightside labelled it wrongly. And this is the only way to go up mountains, there is no alternative to it. It has to be on a slope.

The project was OKayed by the previous govt. , MOU has been signed by a malaysian firm and funding issues were also finalized. They are probably waiting for some time so they could "re-initiate" the project and have their nameplate attached to it.

Yes the normal speed limit for light weight vehicles on motroway is 120 KM/h but on that spot speed limit was just 50KM/h due to the dangerous turns and slope.

M4 Construction Started recently. We also need a motorway from Multan to Daadu Passing through Ratodero. Then we can say that motorway connects all 4 provinces of Pakistan.

I think the actual construction on M4 is planned in 2009...I know they started work on it like a year ago or so but i presume when they said "work will be started shortly" they meant preliminary work like survey, purchase of land, clearing, etc. I presume you are familiar with the situation in punjab and know that small pieces of land belonging to different people will have to be bought and its inevitable that someone's land will be separated by the motorway, etc.....and considering our data maintenance and pathwari record, you can bet that these things take a long time.

Actual work (on the motorway itself) will start only after someone wins a tender and is assigned the job....which I guess will be sometime in mid 2009 (and that too financial circumstances permitting)

Oh btw, there is plan to link Multan to Ratodero and Dadu. You can see the complete motorway plan on the first page (first post) of this thread .

Btw, whats the current status of the Karachi-Hyderabad expressway...any work going on to convert it into a motorway?

I suppose its currently U/C... the one from Ratodero-Gwadar.

But it might take a couple of years before it completes and its just 2 lanes (one lane per side) just like an ordinary road....which isn't bad given that there is not enough traffic to justify any more currently. And if I am not forgetting, it does have provision for widening in the future.

LOL Believe me I have always been wnderng about the same thing whenever I see this greenbelt at M2 & even at M3, a simple divider like the one on M2 would have been much better!

Firstly, the concept of "ugly looking green belt" is subjective. I certainly do not see it as ugly.

Secondly, the divider on M2 is nothing but slabs of cement. Which means, if a car (unfortunately) goes out of control and hit it...both the car and the cement slabs can be hazardous to the on-coming traffic.

The reason M2 has (removable) slabs is because it duals as a runway too in case of need (war). You might have even noted that certain areas on the M2 are made of concrete (near the salt range and between there and care has been taken to keep stretches of M2 as straight as possible. Even sections of the M1 also contain patches where the green belt does not exist for the same reason.

I believe the concept of a green belt was also chosen for aesthetic reasons i.e. grass or flowers. The concept seems to have been borrowed from the German Autobahns. One thing that is missing, however, is the guard rails which prevents an accident on one side from spilling over to oncoming traffic.

dunno man...I don't keep record of traffic accidents on M2 but what I said was simple reasoning given a fast moving car definitely has the potential to do it.

Also its not just the Autobahns but lots of other highways are like that in china, in US, in EU, etc.

It shouldn't happen unless the vehicle is a big loaded truck and remember big trucks/loaded cars are not supposed to be out of third lane so it rarely happens. But I have seen black marks on the cement blocks so cars does strike them ...

My uncle is in MP plus my sister's had an accident on M2 and we spoke with the DIG there for a while and as per him most of the accidents were due to speeding and diverted attention (same was the case with my family) ... my bhanja asked for something, brother in-law turned his face and ran into the car ahead which was slowing down... Fortunately they all survived (some what thanks to wearing a seat belt) but the car ahead was damaged pretty badly and knocked out on the dirt ditch.

There are not much Motorways in South Asia, mostle they rely on Expressways & Highways etc..

Interestingly, when M-2 was built, it was the first motorway of South Asia...

Yeah, the good thing is that there is plenty of room for expansion. And from now on, we should take this approach. The M-2 motorway has six lanes but it's traffic is almost nothing. I have seen most of the northern areas. there is only one place, where metalled road with such bends in a narrow gorge may resemble to this pic, and that is area few km ahead of Sust i.e. short of Khunjerab. However, the land in Khunjerab area is rocky and river is quite wider than what is visible in this pic. And also going towards Khunjerab, the road having ascent like this is on the other side of the river.
So, i also think that this pic does not belong to Pakistan. But may be there is some place, that i/we dont know.

Most probably, it cant be Chakiatun or Dir area. Because the valley in upper pic is a gorge.
If at all this pic is from Pakistan, then it may be in Nagar area i.e. area opposite to Hunza, or some less visited valley (off the main Gilgit-Chitral Rd) near Shandur.

I wish they'll connect Karachi and Lahore with a motorway quality road one day. The distance is 1240 km and it should be possible to do it in 10 hours if there was a high-speed motorway. I bet that nowadays it takes much longer.

I think I read that the upgradation of KKH will be in three phases:

Phase 1. Upgradation of KKH from 2 lanes to 4 lanes from Raikot bridge to Khunjerab Pass. Work is in full swing.

Phase 2. Construction of Bhurhan-Havelian-Manshera expressway (E35). Work has already started. It's going to be just like Murree-Muzaffrabad expressway

Phase 3. Upgradation of KKH from 2 lanes to 4 lanes from Manshera to Raikot bridge, with addition widening of KKH at Chilas. This is the place where Basha dam is being constructed.

It'll take years to build a tunnel to bypass the lake that was created because of a landslide? Meanwhile you need to cross the lake by boat to get to China so effectively KKH is blocked nor now.

Why do they have to make a tunnel to bypass the lake? Can they re-align (without the tunnel) the road?

So,the effort to drain the water of the lake via spilway failed ?

can some one name this interchange I can't find any clover shape interchange on motorway network.

also from pic it seems like this one is under construction. Landscaping still needs to be done.

If this is on M3 - it certainly is a new interchange. I haven't seen this between M2-M3.

When I was little , we used to travel a lot on this bridge - reminds me that they used to run one-lane traffic on the bridge. Run one side for half hour and then the other. I remember people getting stuck just to cross Chanab for hours and hours.

No - Sargodha got a very nice bypass and a highway recently which more like M3. I believe this is that or GT Road.

This isn't motorway. It is actually Sargodha - Faisalabad Road. and to be more precise the protion of road between Rabwah and Chiniot.
Actually both bridges (old steel bridge and new RCC bridge) are meant for the same road. i mean for Sargodha-Faisalabad Road. The older one had an additional utility of Rail Bridge as well.
