mrtfreak July 16th, 2008, 10:48 AM So does that mean there are no ppl sleeping outside anymore?
^^ If you mean at the Esplanade underpass, there are still people sleeping there. Esplanade station and the Esplanade underpass are different structures.
ddes July 16th, 2008, 01:43 PM That platform looks pretty wide...
jerryonhere July 20th, 2008, 08:25 AM They let us look at the interiors so get the look of it. They are kind!
redstone July 20th, 2008, 05:18 PM Bishan's platform level with NS line looks so functionalist.
JediAlf July 27th, 2008, 07:16 AM http://www.lta.gov.sg/projects/images/paya_lebar.JPG
CCL Paya Lebar Station bridge over the CCL platform - seems that platform is widest of all station platforms.
RafflesCity July 27th, 2008, 04:53 PM That looks quite stylish and has a futuristic edge to it
mrtfreak July 27th, 2008, 06:05 PM If I'm not wrong, that's because there are 3 platforms at Paya Lebar station with the bridge going over the middle track. If you look closely, there appears to be a second lift from the bridge going down.
JediAlf July 27th, 2008, 06:38 PM If I'm not wrong, that's because there are 3 platforms at Paya Lebar station with the bridge going over the middle track. If you look closely, there appears to be a second lift from the bridge going down.
I think u are right. Interesting.
oahiyeel July 27th, 2008, 06:51 PM wow. a tanahmerah/amk-styled underground station. 1st of its kind in SG :)
mrtfreak July 27th, 2008, 06:57 PM ^^ Just the first and not the last. DT27 apparently to follow suit. :)
sandstorm6299 July 27th, 2008, 07:05 PM But why is this required? I would think that this 3-rail combination would be required for stations nearer to depots (like MacPherson and Tai Seng). Why does CCL Paya Lebar need a middle track? For DT27, this seem alright since it is connected to Kim Chuan depot.
mrtfreak July 27th, 2008, 07:06 PM Perhaps they wanted a cripple siding somewhere along the line but there was no other suitable area to locate it. In this case, perhaps if they could accelerate the completion of the stretch between Paya Lebar and Tai Seng, they could even extend earlier passenger service to Paya Lebar from Bartley due to the third track in the middle. Who knows what the real plans were/are?
sandstorm6299 July 27th, 2008, 07:18 PM Ahh, maybe it's because MacPherson is a side platform station, there is no space for the 3rd track, so they use Paya Lebar instead?
mrtfreak July 27th, 2008, 07:48 PM MacPherson CCL is an island platform. People keep mixing up the DTL and CCL platform layouts.
oahiyeel July 27th, 2008, 08:00 PM ...they could accelerate the completion of the stretch between Paya Lebar and Tai Seng, they could even extend earlier passenger service to Paya Lebar from Bartley due to the third track in the middle...
this would be great!
anyway, maybe the third platform is in preparations for future branch out (like the changi airport or the old CCK branch)? to where though is anyone's guess. :)
mrtfreak July 27th, 2008, 08:09 PM I suppose a potential future branch could connect the CCL to the ERL, yes?
JediAlf July 27th, 2008, 10:58 PM I suppose a potential future branch could connect the CCL to the ERL, yes?
Likely. ERL does not intersect any existing lines except in Marina Bay area.
Overrun tunnel near Depot 2 and DT27 leave me scratching.
Ang Mo Kio's middle platform may serve the similiar purpose - may branch out to Kallang, past Bishan MRT depot and intersect at EWL Kallang, CCL Mountbatten and ERL station at Tanjong Rhu.
We may see more branching stations to even out the radical lines connecting more lines. This would serve one purpose to relieve potential congestion straining on existing lines.
LTA may already have rough draft of proposed lines apart from TSL and ERL.
Gonna be very very interesting...
ddes July 28th, 2008, 05:39 PM I believe there were initial plans for a line from Ang Mo Kio to Kallang going the way you described.
But honestly, Ang Mo Kio!?! Very few non-interchange stations (other than Boon Lay, Woodlands, Tampines) have that kind of traffic, especially during peak hours...
redstone July 30th, 2008, 10:22 AM Hmm Bishan's southbound platform had been switched to the new CCL platform. But why not use 2 plaforms?
sandstorm6299 July 30th, 2008, 12:15 PM It's a waste of resources to do that. Since Bishan NSL station is going to be completely air-conditioned, they would have to install PSDs on the current northbound platform facing the southbound tracks to close it up. There's no point duplicating when all you have to do is go up to the concourse level and go back down to the southbound platform.
ddes July 30th, 2008, 02:03 PM It seems like SMRT hasn't decided whether it wants to put the "doors open on the left" announcement.
On one trip, it went ...Bishan, Doors Open On The Left, Bishan...
On another trip, it went completely silent.
Today's trip, the driver made a manual announcement (nice to hear a non-Malay train driver making announcements once in a while).
If I'm not wrong, renderings showed that the escalators from the northbound platform going to the CCL were to be placed on where the waiting space of the southbound platform.
redstone July 30th, 2008, 02:59 PM I think it's a very bad idea. Just let it be an island track la
mrtfreak July 30th, 2008, 03:55 PM There's not enough space. I always felt that Bishan station as an island platform was very narrow. And with the station being an interchange, it would not help at all. Also, I feel that by differing the sides at which the doors open/platform is at will help balance the train load better. With island platforms at most stations, people tend to congregate near the doors that open at island platforms while the area at doors do not is relatively emptier.
SMRT should just stick with doors will open on the left. In the long run, it'll be much easier.
JediAlf July 30th, 2008, 06:33 PM Hmm Bishan's southbound platform had been switched to the new CCL platform. But why not use 2 plaforms?
Not CCL platform actually. Just that change of platforms - one devotes to serve Northbound. New one caters to Southbound.
Current platform is too small - too dangerous when CCL Station opens and people pour into the platform. Number of commuters falling into the tracks would skyrocket.
No difference from Dover station and Braddell station either where people have to run up and down when they realise they are on wrong platform.
redstone July 30th, 2008, 08:16 PM I see... i was wondering why not they use similar system as Jurong... Or just leave the current southbound platform unblocked
^tamago^ July 30th, 2008, 08:27 PM There's not enough space. I always felt that Bishan station as an island platform was very narrow. Actually each of Shinjuku's individual platforms are as narrow as Bishan but caters to much more traffic flow!
mrtfreak July 31st, 2008, 02:40 AM That's Japan's perogative. But if it can be avoided, why not? At least the Bishan-users get an upgrade in the process which will make their wait for the train more comfortable too.
And why not do a Jurong style? Cause it would defeat the purpose of building the new southbound platform. The main reason was so that people would not use the current platform to get on southbound trains and thus it would only be used for northbound trains. If the southbound platform remained open, southbound passengers would still use the platform. And why not build another platform for the northbound as well? Costs would go up for sure.

If we do not solve the congestion built up, we would face the cramped platform.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zhWYtQxv7s&feature=related Video of narrower Japanese train platform
I think Singapore takes safety and comfort seriously. LTA has probably seen how the flow to the escalators can jam the platform each time train pulls in during peak hours in existing interchanges. 6 cars carry large volume of passengers between estimated 1500-2000. With 2-3 mins intervals. With higher frequencies at CCL due to 3-car trains, we can expect even more passengers pouring in. Then the whole platform would be jammed.
By sealing one side of platform and turn it into northbound platform would give plenty of spaces for commuters to space out during peak hours.
Singapore wont want to end up like Japan during peak hours.

David-80 July 31st, 2008, 03:10 PM I read on TNP about circle line will pass the a new MRT station that built below a cemetery complex! and the writer actually saw something a bit creepy there...
cheers

ddes July 31st, 2008, 03:54 PM Wtf! The local media loves to create 'scare fests', especially anything regarding the train system.
redstone July 31st, 2008, 05:10 PM Woodleigh station is just beside the old cemetery. Novena used to be one, so is Bishan. So is Orchard, and same for Tiong Bahru, Commonwealth, Redhill I think.

Yup. Not saying LTA does not take safety and comfort seriously, but just wondering how did Tokyo cope with it!
JediAlf August 1st, 2008, 03:56 AM Yup. Not saying LTA does not take safety and comfort seriously, but just wondering how did Tokyo cope with it!
I think it does something with Japanese cultures and upbringing. They learn to live with it.
Despite more trains and availabilities of double decker trains, express trains, these still do not help to relieve the congestion during peak hours. Japanese commuters obviously take these things in their stride and squeeze in the trains, for the sake to reach their destinations quickly.
Many of Tokyo stations have indeed narrow platforms but the commuters are very orderly.
Real test will tell when stage 3 of Circle Line opens during peak hours. We can also observe whether Circle Line, when fully operational, actually helps to relieve congestion and strain on existing lines, especially Bishan and Serangoon.
This photo of Bishan island platform is now history.

Half height platform doors are for elevated stations only - first few stations - Jurong East, Pasir Ris and Yishun - to be operational next year. Plans to do this on rest of elevated stations by 2012.

NSL (North-South Line) Bishan station is the only station that is at ground level. Neither underground nor elevated. New Southbound platform is built on the other side, connected to Junction 8 mall and new CCL station.

Ignore the word of "Bishan Street". It is for illustration. The correct station name is Bishan for Circle Line. This photo was taken few months ago.
It will open to public next year - mid 2009. With this, Bishan is one of newest interchanges - another interchanges on Circle Line - Serangoon, Paya Lebar and Buona Vista with CCL stations built under the existing stations.

ddes August 21st, 2008, 04:17 PM I think the Circle Line will truly be Singapore's first subway line in which architecture and art are inculcated in the design...
Draw the Line
COMMUTERS fumbling for change to pay for a ride from the Circle Line's Bartley station might appreciate the irony of the artwork behind the ticket dispenser.
Titled The Coin Mat, it is made up of 160,000 one-cent coins.
The 8.5m by 5m piece by Singapore painter Jane Lee is one of the art works that will adorn the 28 new MRT stations on the Circle Line, slated to open in stages from next year onwards.
The 33.5 km line is run by public transport operator SMRT, which also runs the North-South and East-West lines.
The Circle Line links the North-South, East-West and North-East lines, and is expected to carry 400,000 to 500,000 commuters daily around the city centre.
The $6.7-billion train line will not just be about driverless trains and seamless travel, but it will also be a charmed circle of art and design.
Prominent Singapore firm WoHa Architects designed the sleek Bras Basah station, which is 35m below ground and covered by a luminous, water-filled skylight.
Stadium station, also by the firm, will be modelled after the current grand dame, the National Stadium.

JediAlf August 21st, 2008, 04:35 PM Here is the press release from LTA website:
Circle Line Art in Transit Programme
Weaving art into public spaces
1. Public art celebrates the identities, experiences and achievements of cultures that make up a society. Especially relevant to a multi-racial and cosmopolitan city like Singapore, the Circle Line Art in Transit (CCL AIT) programme captures this essence through its exhibits in the CCL stations.
2. Today, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is pleased to announce the completion of the CCL AIT programme. This is a continuation of the well-received North East Line Art in Transit programme launched in 1997 and completed in 2003.
3. Mr Yam Ah Mee, Chief Executive of the LTA said: "A vibrant arts community plays an important role in the quality of life that we all enjoy. Art recognises the ties that bind people to a place, its past as well as a better tomorrow. A thoughtfully conceived, executed and integrated piece of public art enhances the value and meaning of a landscape. Cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Paris and London have long promoted public art in their transit systems. These cities, too, recognise the value of art and its ability to contribute to the vibrancy of the cities and humanise the often-hectic transit environment."
4. The CCL AIT programme comprises two main components: Art Seats and Integrated Art.
5. The Art Seats will be installed at all interchange station platforms on the Circle Line: Dhoby Ghaut; Paya Lebar; Serangoon; Bishan; Buona Vista and HarbourFront. Selected from entries through an international design competition launched at the Venice Biennale held in 2006, these creative seats are designed to ats are designed to arouse curiosity and spur inspiration while providing comfort for commuters awaiting their next ride.
6. The Integrated Art for the 28 upcoming CCL stations comprises 22 commissioned and six competition-winning artworks. The artworks are built into station structures as much as possible to ensure that they are durable and easy to maintain. Each artwork is different, creating a unique experience for commuters at every station along the Circle Line.
7. An eight-member Art Review Panel assisted LTA in the judging of both competitions, and in the development of the artworks. (Please refer to Annex A (http://www.lta.gov.sg/images/News%20Release%20CCL%20AIT%20Annex%20B.pdf) for the members of the panel).
8. The panel provided guidance and support to the artists, as well as advice on how to develop artwork suitable for display in an MRT station environment. It also played a key role in facilitating partnership between private and public sectors and in encouraging community involvement during the development phase of the art pieces.
9. Mr Kwok Kian Chow, Chairman of the Art Review Panel and Director of the Singapore Art Museum, said: "The CCL Art in Transit programme has yielded a collection of high quality artworks by our local artists. The quality is achieved through the strength of the artistic proposals as well as collaboration by multiple parties in the course of realising the works. Beyond the aesthetics of "beauty", public art is also about social renewal, civic pride, public enjoyment, environmental improvement, and a clear relationship between the art and the local geography, features and communities." (Please refer to Annex B for the artists' names and themes for each station).
10. When asked about the concept of having Art in Transit, an enthusiastic Mr Eric Ongusiastic Mr Eric Ong, a Marketing Communications Manager, said: "I think it's a great idea to feature artworks from our local artists at every station. I take the train everyday and I sometimes wish our existing train stations were more colourful. Having these art pieces will give the stations more character, and who knows, it might even inspire more Singaporeans to pursue their artistic dreams."
mrtfreak August 21st, 2008, 04:38 PM I think that the art this time round will be a lot more interesting, considering that they are actually going into new media as well. What strikes me most is the Bras Basah artwork which will be 29 short films projected onto the roof of the platform ceiling.
Also, the seats at the interchange stations look to be rather interesting with the names written on them like the old dot matrix train arrival signs. Will see if I can get a picture of those up.
Edit: Art Seat designs added.

mrtfreak October 15th, 2008, 03:36 PM Was there a short blurb on the CCL in today's My Paper? Happened to see the seemingly signature gear-at-the-ends travellator in a picture along with an article in chinese. The gear-at-the-end travellators/escalators seem to be a signature of the CCL's stations, which was what caught my attention in the first place. Can't read Chinese, so couldn't see what it was saying.

Aranho October 15th, 2008, 04:58 PM Here's my best interpretation of the main points of the article (I can understand Chinese but not to well cuz I'm in CLB [u know what is CLB right?]). Please correct my mistakes if it's wrong.
Headline: 5 Circle Line stations expected to be completed by next month
Sub-headline: Work to be completed on 5 Stage 3 Circle Line MRT stations, Serangoon interchange MRT station to have travelator.
Paragraph 1: Construction on 5 Circle Line Stage 3 MRT stations is expected to be completed by next month.
Paragraph 5: Stage 3's length is only 5.7 km.
Paragraph 6: Serangoon MRT station will have the longest travelator of 76 m, longer than Dhoby Ghaut's travelator which is 20 m long. Bartley MRT station will have a mural of 180 000 1 cent coins
Paragraph 7: The distance between Serangoon and Lorong Chuan is 800 m, while the distance between Bishan and Marymount is 1.5 km.
Top picture: Lorong Chuan's artpiece
Bottom Picture: Serangoon's 76 m travelator (note that there are 2 travelators)
these are the only ones that I know. The rest I'm not sure.
mrtfreak October 15th, 2008, 05:47 PM Thanks for the translation. :) So they can begin full testing and be ready with all their art seats for next year eh.
ddes October 15th, 2008, 05:57 PM This is my translation, just some things missed out:
With Serangoon station already fully completed, the Land Transport Authority believes it will be able to handle the 5 stations to designated train operator, SMRT where operational testing, staff familiarization and trials will begin.
Marymount, Lorong Chuan, Bartley and Bishan stations will also be handed over to SMRT by next month.
The 5 station sector's construction is 90% complete, with train trials and tests of various systems are already in progress.
The travellators at Serangoon will be 76m, 20 metres longer than the travellators currently running at Dhoby Ghaut.
Marymount will be the only station which has a ventilation shaft in the middle of the road.
The rest, aranho has mentioned.
^tamago^ October 15th, 2008, 06:32 PM Serangoon station first to be handed over to SMRT next month, followed by the other 4?

Serangoon interchange Station, connecting with the NEL, is expected to be the first station that is completed. The LTA believes that within the next month, the station will be handed to its operator, SMRT to commence testing of the system and training of MRT staff.
Marymount, Lorong Chuan, Bartley and Bishan stations will also be handed over to SMRT later.
The construction of These 5 stations are well over 90% complete. The LTA is currently testing the trains and the different systems within the stations, including scheduling the trains for a test run in the tunnels.
The 33KM long Circle Line is split into 5 stages, and has a total of 29 stations. The earliest completed construction stage, stage 3, is 5.7km long.
MRT Stations "Art of Travel"
Each of the 5 stations are unique. Serangoon Station will have the longest travellator, at a total of 76m long, 20 metres longer than Douby Ghaut Interchange station. Bishan station's platforms will all be air-conditioned. Marymount station will be the only one with a vent constructed in the middle of the road. Bartly station will have an artwork image made up of 180,000 one cent coins.
Also, The distance between Serangoon station and Lorong Chuan Station is the shortest, at only 800m. On the other hand, the longest distance between two stations is 1.5km, between Lorong Chuan and Bishan!
Like the North East Line, the circle line will also feature local artist's work to allow the public to enjoy the "Art of travel". The artwork featured will have an estimated total value of $4.8m.
I haven't done Chinese in over a year now, but thats pretty much about it, sentence for sentence. Oh and as for the "Art of travel" thing, thats a literal translation, I think the English term for it used in the NEL was "Art in Transit"... lol
Anyway, sounds good, but even though the stations will be handed over to SMRT next month, I doubt they will operate them until stage 2 is completed. =(
Simon91 October 16th, 2008, 03:50 PM huh? open next month? how possible is that?
Aranho October 16th, 2008, 04:25 PM not open next month. it's to be completed next month.

By right they should run Stage 3 by middle of year 2009....
kurakura October 17th, 2008, 08:44 AM stage 4 and 5 is still far from finish. especially the ones along west coast highway.
JediAlf October 17th, 2008, 09:12 AM In additional, Stage 1, 2 and 3 already have rail tracks in place according to latest LTA annual report. Delayed stations have been on schedule to be completed soon, meaning they would eventually open after Stage 3 opens.
From LTA annual report 2007/2008
"Construction on the Circle Line is on track. About twothirds
of the tunnelling needed for the 33.5km line
has been completed. Half of the stations already have
the station structures. Track laying at the depot is
completed and the tracks for CCL 1, 2 and 3 were ready in
September 2008. So far, 26 of the 40 trains for the CCL
have arrived and the rest will be delivered by the
end of the year. The CCL will be opened in stages from
2009 onwards."
Simon91 October 17th, 2008, 02:34 PM ^^ right aranho... naive me..
mrtfreak October 17th, 2008, 04:40 PM I think that possibly the next "phase" to open would be Stage 2 from Paya Lebar to Tai Seng, provided that Paya Lebar gets cleaned up soon. Its getting there, but seems to be progressing really slowly. As for why stage 4 and 5 stations seem to be far from completion compared to other stations on other stages, the construction started much later if I'm not wrong. Around 2004 or 2005 compared to stage 3's 2003 start date. Also, they went through the "sand-ban" episode as well.
But its good to know that the track laying for the first three stages are done. Does this include the section between Nicoll Highway and Stadium stations?

Yes. Go to the LTA website, under the "Corporate" tab, select "Publications". It should be on that page.
nicholasliha October 17th, 2008, 06:42 PM omg, how exciting, i can finally take the circle line when i come back to singapore next year..
in 2005 when i started archi school we used to complain by the time CCL open we would no longer have to take it to NUS. i still have chance!!! from bishan!!!

JediAlf October 18th, 2008, 02:02 AM Stage 2 - delayed stations are in process of building the entrances. Roads are expected to be restored by year end.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd125/novawin/DSC00122.jpg From sgforums - trains, Dakota Station - taken in June 2008.
I do hope that there is a plan to open Stage 1, 2 and 3 together, bypassing delayed stations, allowing contractors to carry out final touches...
Stage 4 and 5 - By year end, they would reach the completion of total 17 km tunnelling (9 km was last reported completed in September 2007) and start laying rail tracks. I spotted the stacks of rail tack concrete sleepers in temporary staging yard near NUS and One North with remaining tunnel walls stacking up.
All stations in Stage 4 and 5 are expected to finish station structure by mid 2009.
mrtfreak October 18th, 2008, 03:18 AM Ehh, I dunno if they will open the line with unoperable stations. But in that picture Dakota looks a bit more advanced than Paya Lebar does.
Some construction updates:
Buona Vista - The atrium over the Passenger Service Centre has been filled in to give more space on the platform. Tactile guidance tiles been put in place to the lift at platform level. New emergency staircase on west side of the station is more or less done and features glass doors. Most of the improvements to the station seem a bit weird and inconsistent with the original station design. Linkway to Circle Line station has the metal frame for roofing up as well.
Cut & Cover tunnels between one-north & Kent Ridge - Road restoration is complete over the section while soil and surface restoration over the entire worksite is underway. The cranes installed over some of the pits have been taken down and the site is being cleaned up. The staging area still remains though.
Paya Lebar - Addition & alteration works on the linkway from the station concourse will begin/has already begun. The southern wall (the one with the exit towards City Plaza) has been boarded up with notices saying "CCL Entrance". Work on the linkway from the platform has reached a more advanced stage, with metal hoarding set up to protect the trains (similar to what happened at Bishan, with trains running at reduced speeds). Only one out of the three surface-level exit & entry points has roofing done. Another one has a complete concrete structure that has yet to have its fittings and fixtures installed.
MacPherson - Cladding for all three exit & entry points is mostly complete. All three have been testing lighting. What mostly remains on surface-level is for road restoration (the last phase) and landscaping and tidying up of the amenities (bike rails, covered linkways to overhead pedestrian bridges & bus stops).

No different from Dover which was built at same time as operating trains run past. Woodleigh remains closed as NEL trains pass by.
If PSD doors are already up in delayed stations or the stations are secured enough to prevent workers from entering the tracks or third rail is connected and active, this would enable trains to bypass safely.
Eventually NE2 would be built over operational line if they dare to build over operational line. These delayed stations would definitely give LTA chances.
So all I hope that they have the other plan besides the official confirmation to open 5 stations initially.

This shows that trains do run through stations that are at advanced stage - interior fittings are ongoing.
This is why I think this way. Stage 1 stations (except Nicoll Highway) are already completed and waiting for trains to rumble in operationally.
mrtfreak October 18th, 2008, 03:55 AM What I meant was, would the operator find it cost effective to do so. Not so much of whether it was possible because with technology these days, next to anything is possible.

Because Stage 1 stations are now in SMRT hands and they are still maintaining the stations until now...
Here is the comprehensive detail for Circle Line:

ALL GEARED UP TO LAUNCH THE CIRCLE LINE
The countdown to the launch of the Circle Line has begun with the delivery of the first train for the new line in May 2006. Prior to this, the Circle Line team, together with LTA personnel, spent months conducting integrated tests for the train system at a test track in France. Detailed tests were conducted on the various sub-systems of the train as well as signalling, controls and communications systems. More trains will be progressively delivered to Singapore over the next few years. The Circle Line team is sparing no efforts in fine-tuning and testing the train systems to ensure we deliver the level of user-friendly and reliable service the Singapore public has come to expect from SMRT.
When it is launched in 2010, the Circle Line will transform Singapore’s public transport landscape by linking all existing MRT lines to the city centre. Travelling time will be trimmed significantly as passengers exercise the option of bypassing busy interchanges such as Raffles Place and City Hall stations.
This new line which will take the commuter’s travel experience to a new level, runs underground for 33.3 kilometres going through the commercial and residential heart of central Singapore. Starting at Dhoby Ghaut Interchange, where it intersects both the North South Line and the North East Line, the Circle Line’s orbital circuit ends at HarbourFront Interchange on the North East Line.
STATIONS AND SYSTEMS
SMRT has been working closely with LTA to ensure all stations on the Circle Line are fitted with technologically advanced systems complemented by accessible layouts and commuter-friendly features. The year in review saw the completion of the civil construction and installation of building services systems such as lifts, escalators, air-conditioning and fire protection for the first-stage stations on the Circle Line. These systems are currently being tested and commissioned. The exteriors of the city stations complemented by lush landscaping were completed in time for the IMF – World Bank Annual Meetings in September 2006.
Over at Kim Chuan Depot, construction work on the world’s largest underground railway depot is nearing completion. SMRT worked closely with LTA to improve the layout and operational efficiencies of the depot within the defined space. A key priority was to enhance the movement of trains in and out of the depot and to ensure smooth maintenance flow. Similarly, tracks layout and signalling design have been fine-tuned to the requirements of automatic trains. We are on track to complete the installation of essential equipment such as signalling, communication and power systems by the end of FY2008.
PEOPLE AND PROCESSES
A new rapid transit line requires extensive preparations on the operational level prior to its launch. During the year, we took pro-active measures to contain our pre-operations budget expenditure in view of changes to the project timeline. Our design review included reviews of stations in the later stages. Optimising the use of our talent pool, staff who worked on the
review of stations also participated in the testing and commissioning of our railway systems. The drafting of the Railway Operating Procedures is completed and will be finalised for revenue service once trial runs commence.
Planning for the training and recruitment of skilled personnel to operate the Circle Line’s driverless system is well underway. We are developing training schemes to cover over 20 different job types including the skill sets required in control centre and station operations, signalling, train maintenance, safety, and civil engineering.
Trial runs will be conducted to test these procedures and processes in day-to-day operations and in emergency situations. These trials have been designed to give our officers the opportunity to work at executing their duties safely and efficiently prior to the start of revenue service. Training manuals are currently being developed to support these training schemes.
We have also put in place a business model to deliver a system that is viable, efficient and reliable when launched.
Backed by SMRT’s strong track record of running Singapore’s first railway system for 20 years, the Circle Line is poised to be an advanced, safe and user-friendly system, fine-tuned to the needs of passengers of the future.

COMPLETING THE CIRCLE
SMRT is geared up for the launch of CCL Stage 3 (CCL3) which is slated to open in mid-2009. This six-kilometre stretch between Bartley Road and Marymount Road will be served by five underground stations. It will be linked to the North East Line at Serangoon MRT Station and the North South Line at Bishan MRT Station.
Businesses and residents in north and northeast Singapore will benefit from the opening of CCL3. Commuters can look forward to shorter travelling time. For instance, residents in Serangoon will take just 25 minutes to reach Yishun by transferring to the North South Line at Bishan MRT Station, as compared to 45 minutes currently either by bus or train.
CCL NERVE CENTRE
The nerve centre of CCL operations is Kim Chuan Depot (KCD) which houses the Operation Control Centre and maintenance centre.
In December 2007, we began work on the care and maintenance of KCD and seven new trains for CCL stabled there. Operating the world’s largest underground depot for driverless train operations opens a new and exciting world for SMRT. Our staff are being trained to manage train operations
within the depot, undertake depot and train maintenance, and respond effectively to emergency situations.
Several safety features have been incorporated into the depot. These include a suspended walkway for staff to move safely to the stabling and handover areas, authorised access to the train automated area through the Access Control Management System, and motion detectors that monitor movement on the tracks.
Innovative features in the depot include a computerised Building Management System and the Automatic Storage and Retrieval System, a 23-metre high fully automated warehousing system.
EMPOWERING THROUGH TRAINING
Even as we invest in cutting edge technology to run CCL, we are also investing heavily in our people who will be running it. We have begun recruiting skilled personnel to operate the line. More than one-third of CCL3 staff are from existing SMRT divisions. They bring with them a wealth of railway skills and expertise garnered from years of invaluable on-the-job experience.
From 2008, our staff will undergo training to ensure they are equipped with the necessary knowledge to operate a driverless system.
LOOKING AHEAD
Work on getting CCL up and running will continue in FY2009. We will begin testing and commissioning the system as we work closely with LTA and contractors to ensure compliance with the testing criteria. In early 2009, we will conduct trial runs as we test the robustness of our operating procedures and processes. We will also test our staff’s understanding of these procedures through exercises based on diverse operational scenarios.
SMRT will be carrying out maintenance works at stations including Tai Seng and Promenade MRT stations which have received temporary occupation permits. Testing and commissioning of building services systems at other stations will continue as planned.

Simon91 October 27th, 2008, 08:49 AM great update, thanks!
Station looks.. Well, great, just great
sf_84only October 27th, 2008, 12:22 PM I wonder whats the frequency like.....1-2 minutes?
mrtfreak October 27th, 2008, 03:08 PM Perhaps 3 minutes during peak, 8 minutes during non-peak. Something similar to the NEL frequency?
sf_84only October 27th, 2008, 03:47 PM Hmmm..3 minutes...well...i think its really gonna be jam packed. 8 minutes non-peak.. Why does SBS Transit NEL does not increase its train services lesseing waiting time. I only hear lots of improvement from SMRT side.
I remember seeing a report by Alstom somewhere maximum frequency is 90 seconds = 1.5 minutes for the circle line.. Not sure if its possible on the circle line.
blizzardtweaker October 27th, 2008, 05:38 PM im predicting that they'll have to make 1-2min frequencies during morning/evening peak just like the NSL. While traffic may not be as high as those on the main lines, we must remember that the circle line only has 3 cars! So those trains will be packed like sardines and you would need double the frequency of regular trains to accommodate everyone.
Marymount Stn is coming along nicely, thanks for the update.
ddes October 28th, 2008, 08:53 AM I'm predicting bad loads when Marymount- Bartley opens. That is, of course expected.
But I guess those NYJC and Marists will get some reprieve and parallel bus services like 28, 58 and some others will start suffering and perhaps equipment downgrade.
kurakura October 29th, 2008, 09:26 AM i think they will reroute the buses again...arghh...
oahiyeel October 29th, 2008, 10:58 AM CCL belongs to SMRT? They may not reroute if so. :)
^tamago^ October 29th, 2008, 12:27 PM LTA is in charge of the rationalisation exercise. :(
sandstorm6299 October 29th, 2008, 12:49 PM Guarantee will rationalise. And then years down the road they realise they have to un-reroute those routes.
OK, silly question from me now: why should LTA force SBS and SMRT to reroute those services?
I feel that the services should continue be allowed to continue, and if the companies think that those services have become unfeasible, they'll drop them.
My caes against a full-scale rationalisation exercise is that you're forcing everyone to take MRT. I think in cases like these, should let the buses complement the rail, even if the take exactly the same route half the time.
Like look at the NSL. It's only recently they realised that the NSL can't cope with so many passengers that they allow the bus companies to make new routes covering the length of the line.
So why make the mistake now, only to undo it later?
ddes October 29th, 2008, 03:27 PM For LTA, rail is the priority. It is when railways can't fulfill the job any longer will they let buses in.
Anyway, bus companies haven't really been successful in providing a suitable alternative to trains for the NSL. SBST 128 is still not doing well, I heard?
^tamago^ October 29th, 2008, 05:32 PM With a journey time of 76 minutes on 128 versus 23 mins on the MRT from Yio Chu Kang to Raffles Place, what kind of competition is that?
sf_84only October 30th, 2008, 08:59 AM I wonder will there be delay in stage 5 since economy is getting weak now.
kurakura October 30th, 2008, 10:07 AM I wonder will there be delay in stage 5 since economy is getting weak now.
it is already delayed by 3 yrs. no one would mind waiting another 3.
ddes October 30th, 2008, 12:52 PM Perhaps that's what they want everybody to think. Then when CCL suddenly opens fully in 2010, they'd say they're opening ahead of schedule.
RafflesCity October 30th, 2008, 01:16 PM ^^
It's always about managing expectations. Good PR move if that's the case
Simon91 October 31st, 2008, 04:30 PM ermmm.... I actually hoped that when CCL opens then the demand for bus trips will fall and SBS will increase frequency on the denser routes?
mrtfreak October 31st, 2008, 04:46 PM I wonder will there be delay in stage 5 since economy is getting weak now.
The reason being because of the economy? If I'm not wrong, funds for such projects were put in place before so I don't think it would adversely affect the completion date for CCL5 apart from what has been established. Also, it would be good to have that section up ASAP considering that it is in close proximity to the Resorts World Sentosa IR. Sure, NEL can accomodate the additional transport demand, but CCL would supplement what NEL can accomodate.
And by right, the CCL isn't entirely delayed by 3 years. As I remember, the expected completion years for the various stages were as follows:
Stage 1 - late 2006/early 2007
Stage 2 - 2007
Stage 3 - 2008 (kind of true, seeing that completion with hand-over to operator is to be within the year)
Stage 4 & 5 - 2010
Note, these were the expected completion dates, not operation commencement dates.
Also, to further add, this appeared on CNA's website, in an article on the rail sector:
In the medium term though, the answer will have to be more trains and more rail lines and the Transport Minister gave the assurance that projects that have already been announced will not be delayed by the slowing economy.
kurakura November 1st, 2008, 01:54 AM The reason being because of the economy?

Actually the line can be constructed faster rite? i suppose the LTA chose the cheapest project timeline (w/o addistional shift etc)
I read somewhere that china can complete an underground line in less than 3 yrs? correct me if i am wrong.
mrtfreak November 1st, 2008, 03:10 AM Depends on the construction method as well. Vancouver has pretty much completed their underground section of the Canada line within 3 years. But most of the tunneled section was built by the cut & cover method, similar to what they did for the Circle Line near one-north & kent ridge stations and around the former Nicoll Highway area. Also, the Canada Line runs very close to the surface as opposed to the CCL which has to dive under river basins and such.
Cut & cover also brings about lots of other inconveniences. To build the Canada Line, Vancouver ripped open an entire stretch of roadway that was a suburban commercial belt that had a lot of the store owners throwing their hands up in dispair at the drop in customers they saw through the construction period. So I think it really depends on a lot of factors. The TBMs have to move so as not to cause overt settlement of the top soil that leads to cases like your Holland Village-Farrer Road cave-in scare. Add that to the fact that TBMs generally will progress at a slow rate since they have to chew through all the rock and sediment, and you'll have a line taking longer to build.
Depth is another issue. The deeper you go, the more different types of rock you will see. Some are easier to cut through, some more difficult. So that would play a factor as well.
mcarling November 2nd, 2008, 05:12 PM A TBM should be able to bore 5 to 10 meters per day depending on soil conditions. Assuming that stations are typically about 2 km apart, one year is enough time to bore all the tunnels if they are all done in parallel. Of course, the work is somewhat serialized to reduce costs by starting one tunnel when another has finished. The number of TBMs is a trade-off between cost and speed.

mcarling November 3rd, 2008, 11:40 AM governments are supposed to move into expansionary spending mode (ie spend loads of money mode) during economic downturns.
That is the Keynesian theory -- which has not had credibility since the 1950s. If the government were to expand their construction spending now, they would drive up the costs of construction for the private sector. That would produce an overall negative effect because private sector spending has a higher multiplier than government spending.
heirloom November 3rd, 2008, 12:20 PM hrm, i'm not a serious economist, but it seems many govts seem to follow this line of thought. but that doesnt matter so much because govts aren't always right. anyway, govt construction is supposed to make up for contraction in private spending, which in singapore's context would mean loosening up of the tight construction situation, but a contraction nonetheless.
logically, many (developers) would like to seize the opportunity to build in a downturn, hopefully launching in an boom economy, but only the cash richest can do so because financing dries up in downturns esp this one.
mcarling November 3rd, 2008, 03:19 PM I think we may see the government stop deferring construction projects, but I don't think we'll see any major attempts to increase the tempo.
oahiyeel November 3rd, 2008, 06:22 PM Braddell Heights Estate to undergo Private Estate Upgrading
By May Wong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 02 November 2008 1555 hrs
SINGAPORE: Braddell Heights Estate in Serangoon Central will soon receive new recreational facilities. The upgrading work will start early January and is scheduled to be completed by 2010.
Under the government's Private Estate Upgrading Programme, the area will see its existing park enlarged. Residents can also look forward to the creation of a new park.
Marine Parade GRC MP Seah Kian Peng announced this at a community event on Sunday.
He also noted that three of the five MRT stations of the new Circle Line are within the estate. They are the Bartley, Serangoon and Lorong Chuan stations.
Phase One of the Circle Line will start operating by June next year.
Mr Seah added that a shopping mall will also be built on the land above the Serangoon MRT station.

sandstorm6299 November 8th, 2008, 09:27 AM Marymount station looks great.... although I do have to say that it seems that all stations are going to look alike.. these CCL station entrances look exactly like their NEL counterparts. Just stainless steel, glass and grey steel columns. There's nothing to distinguish from Hougang, Kovan, Woodleigh, Potong Pasir, Boon Keng or Farrer Park. There doesn't seem to be anything to colour it up... it's pretty cold.
JediAlf November 8th, 2008, 09:53 AM Soon this thread is buzzing with more photos of completed stations one by one . Countdown to opening of Circle Line has begun - subject to the completeness of trial run of MRT trains.
Long wait is going to be over soon...
ddes November 8th, 2008, 02:14 PM I pass by Marymount quite a few times at night and the station actually looks 'louder' and to some extent, more impressive than its counterparts in NEL maybe because of the bright lights from the station contrasting with the generally darker less lit surrounding areas.
I'm sorry for lack of pics so far since I'm still in NS and my journeys of observing things are largely done through my commutes to and from camp.

ah, well.... yeah, though actually that station exit looks somewhat more colourful on the other side. if u look at the last photo of my most recent post they painted the big concrete structure (behind the station exit itself) orange. as for the other station exit they painted it grey...

First CCL train - May 2006.
Last ones should be delivered until 2008 end as stated in LTA annual report.

Nod nod. I agree. Sigh. All these stations are already maintained by SMRT after LTA handed stations one by one to SMRT.
I believe MRT trains already go past Nicoll Highway station towards Dhoby Ghaut during testing and trial runs.
Stage 1 stations - all completed except for Nicoll Highway and already handed over to SMRT.
All waiting for SMRT to finish testing testing...
^tamago^ November 11th, 2008, 04:05 PM I thought Paya Lebar, Dakota and Mountbatten are not ready for trains to run past?
JediAlf November 11th, 2008, 04:17 PM I thought Paya Lebar, Dakota and Mountbatten are not ready for trains to run past?
Because the tracks are already laid in Stage 1, 2 and 3 according to LTA.
2007 LTA news Release on Circle Line - Last updated 14 Sept 2007 (http://app.lta.gov.sg/corp_press_content.asp?start=1822)
From LTA annual report:
"Construction on the Circle Line is on track. About twothirds
of the tunnelling needed for the 33.5km line
has been completed. Half of the stations already have
the station structures. Track laying at the depot is
completed and the tracks for CCL 1, 2 and 3 were ready in
September 2008. So far, 26 of the 40 trains for the CCL
have arrived and the rest will be delivered by the
end of the year. The CCL will be opened in stages from
2009 onwards."
So between now and mid 2009 for Circle Line Stage 3 opening, this would give plenty of time for SMRT to do intensive testing on train running while the contractors are working on to finish the interior fittings.
I can only look at photo with "Dhoby Ghaut". More or less, they will cover this with temporary stickers stating the temporary terminating station.
BTW, rail track laying is already in progress in Stage 4 - because I saw the piles of track sleepers and the workers busy assemblying the tracks at the site at One North staging yard.
^tamago^ November 11th, 2008, 06:25 PM I don't think they will have temporary stickers ba...
oahiyeel November 12th, 2008, 03:58 PM ^^ i think they will cover them with stickers. They did that at Tanah Merah when Expo opened before Airport. They pasted the "Expo" word over the "Changi Airport"...
ddes November 13th, 2008, 08:15 AM Aiyoh. You're looking at Dhoby Ghaut and wishing it opens next year... What about the "westbound" heading to HarbourFront? That's even worse right?
On the bright side, it looks like the time between the opening of Marymount- Bartley and Tai Seng- Dhoby Ghaut will be about 6 months or slightly more or less.
mrtfreak November 13th, 2008, 02:52 PM Opening of Stage 2 will be a welcome. Tai Seng seems to have been ready since forever...
Some updates:
Paya Lebar - Modifications on-going for ground level connection to concourse, glass walling will go up soon and the roof will be installed too. One new exit, near the mosque, will be a concrete structure which seems complete and will be moving to the fitting-out stage soon. The ventilation structure looks like it is yet to be complete. Another exit near the former petrol station is the most complete with roofing progressing beyond the insulation stage. The last exit recently had escalators installed. Platform level connection is progressing, but from what the public can see, seemingly slowly.
MacPherson - All exits mostly complete structurally. All also testing lights. There will be two exits equipped with lifts - one outside MacPherson secondary and another next to the Geylang NPC.
Tai Seng - Let me simply pose this question; When will it open?
Bartley - All exits testing lights. I think this actually extends to all stage 3 stations.
201911 November 13th, 2008, 03:31 PM Bartley - All exits testing lights. I think this actually extends to all stage 3 stations.

Agree. The station exit structures for the Circle Line stations in town should be kept as small as possible. Due to limited space and in deference to the historical architecture in some parts, an all-glass exit is preferred. In fact I feel the exits at Bras Basah could have been more fully-cladded in glass.
Also, its about time they returfed the grass at the War Memorial Park after the F1.

War Memorial Park has to look good and spacious, hence in unsheltered exit. Another unsheltered exit is at Bras Brasah (near the pool which is actually station roof).
Prior to construction of CCL Station, it used to have unsheltered underpass to suntec.

RafflesCity November 18th, 2008, 02:40 PM I understand that Bukit Brown station would not be opening for some time as its in the middle of a cemetery. What about the Thomson station?
201911 November 18th, 2008, 03:03 PM I understand that Bukit Brown station would not be opening for some time as its in the middle of a cemetery. What about the Thomson station?
when the station locations were first announced, thomson, bukit brown & west coast stations were supposed to remain as shell stations, but apparently thomson and west coast are now going to be opened after all, though bukit brown will remain closed.
to Simon91: you wouldnt want to go there, its infested with mosquitoes.
JediAlf November 18th, 2008, 03:07 PM I understand that Bukit Brown station would not be opening for some time as its in the middle of a cemetery. What about the Thomson station?
Thomson and West Coast were originally slated to be shell stations just like Bukit Brown station.
Now the Government decided to construct Thomson and West Coast as well - they will be opening together with the rest of Stage 4 and 5 respectively
JediAlf November 18th, 2008, 03:09 PM Wah same answers. :)
RafflesCity November 18th, 2008, 03:10 PM Thanks for the info JediAlf & 201911 :)
The Thomson station is within walking distance from Police Academy / SLF Building?
btw I thought the Police Academy was supposed to move out of the area, but theyre apparently still there.

JediAlf November 18th, 2008, 03:34 PM Good thing is that Circle Line 3 would open in mid 2009. This definitely gives delayed stations time to finish their remaining works.
I think the contractors can finish Paya Lebar by first quarter 2009 or second quarter.
sandstorm6299 November 18th, 2008, 05:20 PM ...
sandstorm6299 November 18th, 2008, 05:37 PM I don't understand why Thomson wasn't clear to open earlier. It seems to me it's in the middle of a significantly developed area.
Tai Seng and McPherson seems to have opted for more box-y type of station.. maybe match the surrounding industrial areas and nothing too flashy, I suppose?
JediAlf November 18th, 2008, 06:08 PM I don't understand why Thomson wasn't clear to open earlier. It seems to me it's in the middle of a significantly developed area.
I think the LTA planners calculated and estimated the volume of passengers based on the traffic on public buses, initially - this may contribute to the plan of making Thomson as shell station.
Overcrowding on trains during peak hours may have waken the planners and force them to re-think how to resolve the traffic.
Probably they decide to open Thomson earlier than planned, in hope to ease the traffic on NSL and allow traffic to bypass NSL to other destinations.
^tamago^ November 18th, 2008, 06:42 PM I just realised that it seems nobody ever bothers about the Bukit Brown station.. haha.. :)

i dont think it was. its not very clear in the photo but when i went there, it looked as if something inside had overheated and burnt what seemed to be a ventilation shaft up there. but nevertheless it is rather interesting...

mrtfreak November 22nd, 2008, 04:05 PM Thanks for all the photos! Now I suppose we have pictures to make sense of the typed-out updates for Paya Lebar - Tai Seng stations.
Buona Vista has come along quite a bit. The hoarding around the escalators to the transfer level have been taken down except for the one leading to the escalators themselves. And the linkway to the CCL station is up already, complete with metal frame for the roof. It'd be great if someone had the time to take a few shots here and there. Oh, and on the platform, the tactile guidance system has been installed though the lift is yet to be operational.

bunch of shops in MRT station (or near it, like the one @ choa chu kang) which SMRT gives a fancy name. more like a mini shopping mall actually.
strange that a stage 4 station should be in a more advanced stage of construction than a stage 2 station... buona vista's connection to ccl seems much more complete than the one at paya lebar, and alteration works done at these stations are rather similar, build escalators and staircases from one end of the existing platform to the new underground platform.

From 14 Sept 2007 LTA news release,
"For Paya Lebar interchange station, we have successfully underpinned the existing MRT viaduct piers where the piled foundations were in the way of the new Paya Lebar Station on the Circle Line."
Apparently, this delayed the station progress...
oahiyeel November 23rd, 2008, 05:40 PM For anyone interested, the Draft Masterplan has been updated (not sure when, just noticed) to include the alignment + stations of ALL CCL stages, including CCL MB Station. (previously it only showed Stages 1 to 3)
It also shows alignment + stations of DTL1, except Bugis station.

Where did you hear about this from? Buona Vista has the area for an Xchange, but does it have sufficient shopping traffic?

For Paya Lebar, there are two different connections being built. Not too sure about Buona Vista as I haven't really seen the connection itself up close. But for Paya Lebar, there's one connection from the concourse and another from the platform. I suppose part of the reason why its taking so long is because the road was formerly diverted over the construction area of the platform link. So any progress from this side, apart from demolition of the facilities housing block, could not be made.
For Buona Vista's case, the connection is adjacent to the existing station and on free land. There are no road diversions obstructing the construction.
The PSD-ing of NSL Bishan continues.... The first glass panels have descended on the first door of the train.
And re-tiling of the northbound platform has also started. A small section near the front of the train has been cordoned off and the old tiles taken out and replaced with new ones, like those on the southbound platform.
JediAlf November 29th, 2008, 04:02 AM Where did you hear about this from? Buona Vista has the area for an Xchange, but does it have sufficient shopping traffic?
Weeks ago, SMRT had released the tender of shops at Buona Vista.
This station would be very busy when more buildings and new residences are getting ready in few years time. Furthermore the station is in Vista Xchange, another zone of entire One north. Vista Xchange caters to civic, cultural, retail and entertainment hub.
New bus interchange would be eventually built there in future.
There is a new building now under construction - just next to Buona Vista MRT Station. This new buildings is managed by Capitaland and Rock production (run by New Creation Church) - 2011.

mrtfreak November 29th, 2008, 03:28 PM Right, but all those will only contribute to traffic in "a few years time". I'm just wondering about the viability of the thing. SMRT seems to be investing a lot in these Xchanges recently and sometimes, in my opinion, these things lack the shopper traffic for the amount invested in it.
ddes November 29th, 2008, 04:56 PM SMRT earns from these Xchanges in the form of rent so technically, it doesn't really need to bother about shopping traffic as long as someone rents the retail space and pays them rent. And most of their Xchanges seem to be doing well except Raffles Place and Dhoby Ghaut.

when the station is ready, the space between the existing harbourfront mrt NEL station concourse and vivocity will become the new CCL station concourse, with escalators leading down to the platform level.
Nov December 19th, 2008, 04:56 PM Interesting. The CCL is continuous with the NEL.

sandstorm6299 December 20th, 2008, 06:23 AM Wow, so the two platforms are right next to each other? Nice!
mcarling December 20th, 2008, 12:46 PM I misunderstood the illustration at first. The text clarifies the illustration: "Transfers from the Circle Line (CCL) to the North East Line (NEL) are made via Escalators or Lift that connects the CCL platform to the NEL paid concourse area." The CCL platform appears to be one level below and to the side of the NEL platform.
ddes December 20th, 2008, 02:57 PM For HarbourFront station, I wonder how cooperation between SMRT and SBS Transit will be like. Do hope they will put aside their differences and work the huge human crowd which passes through the station, especially during the weekend.
I doubt CCL is actually continuous with NEL, believe it's a print error. First, signaling problems. Second, 3rd rail and overhead lines.
