Salzburg is one of the most popular Austrian cities for tourists. Rightly so? Decide by yourself.
Some pictures from today, five days before the annual festival starts.

I've too Salzburg last year. But only for a few hours, it was bloody hot. The hottest day in Austria they said on the radio, maybe you still remember. Salzburg is a nice city but I was suprised how small it actuall is.

^^ I remember those days. Fortunately I was in Alaska these two weeks so it didn't affect me. ;) But the media kept reporting about it and friends told me about it.

Beautiful pics of one of the most beautiful cities in Europe :applause:

And comparing with the 60s pic - I think it's thanks to the UNESCO enlistment, looks very similar to the renovation of the Pelourinho in Bahia.

I also took some pics in Salzburg, they are not that good in quality, but anyway - the city deserves as much pics as possible :)

Is it realy a small place?

Basically, what you see in pics 3 & 4 is the whole historic center. The city itself stretches out towards the other direction, but after all, it is only Austria's 4th city after Vienna, Graz and Linz, with only 143,000 inhabitants.

It's also the 4th largest agglomeration in Austria with 214,700 inhabitants (some suburbs are on German ground). So it's a compareable urban area to other alpine/prealpine cities as Luzern, Bregenz, Ljubljana, Como or Innsburck and thus among the biggest cities in the Alps (Grenoble is about double size).

I had no idea some of it was German soil. :weird:

The Bavarian town of Freilassing for instance is usually included among Salzburg's suburbs as it is very well connected by bus and rail and quite important for the local economy.

great looking city, it looks very clean. I like 1 & 2 the best with the rock behind the buildings, and 28 is a cool one too.

Looks like a lovely city. It is certainly a place I want to get to one day. I've been to Austria, but not much of it yet unfortunately, so I have to have this town on my list.

The only part that seems to let the town down is the river frontage. It looks as though no effort has been done here. Weeds and little else. Water frontage is the most beautiful natural asset a city can have, and it's a shame when some cities make no effort here.
