What is everyones thoughts on these? As a CPD Officer I kind of like them and I do think in some respects they do reduce crime. However, a lot of the time, the crime just moves down the block. Some of the cameras need to be placed in better spots. (Just my observation.)
And I'm wondering (since I live in Old Town) If the camera's at Cabrini Green will come down once the new buildings go up.
The lights I'm sure annoy a lot of residence but it seems like they changed the lights from the new cameras I've seen. They're a lot smaller and not as bright.

My question to you McDude is whether in your opinion or experience the placement of such surveillance units in comination with transforming neighborhoods taking personal responsibility for what happens on their streets will largely succeed in reducing places to hide?

If I understand your question right. Are you saying that as neighborhoods change and gentrify will that reduce crime? The answer to that would be a resounding, yes. I think there is another CPD Officer on this board. I don't know if they will agree with me but to me what has reduced crime is gentrification. Police work can only do so much.

So are they replacing the huge bullet proof boxes with the smaller, less flashy cameras? Or are they only installing the large ones in "shoot out" territory?

I don't really know exactly what they're doing. I guess the new ones are still bullet proof, just not as big and the lights aren't as bright and big either.
