Is HONG KONG going to be the first city in the world to host 2 skyscrapers >400m upon the completion of ICC/US7?

Kuala Lumpur already has the Petronas Towers, and New York had the WTC prior to 9/11.

But if you mean separate towers (non-twins), then I think you may be right.

Even separate towers, it must be Shanghai. with Jin Mao 420m and SWFC 492m.

yeah, shanghai's SWFC may very well get to 400m faster than ICC, making HK the 2nd city to reach two different 400m+ scrapers. Chicago will be a close 3rd as well :D

^i dont think ive seen a larger core??
just as i thought. looking at an elevaion, there isnt 118 levels but 110 or 106 office/hotel floors. Its says lev27 now but its missing lev4,14 and 24.
so really its 24 floors high atm. you would probably seeit better if they labelled every floor. so missing will be lev4,14,24,34,44,54,64,74.84,94,104,114.
does everyone agree ? lol
count em>110?

does anyone know why the core is so enormous? it's much bigger than the shanghai world financial centre, for example. i would have thought a core this big would have quite a negative impact on office space unless it gets slimmer as the building gets taller.

any ideas?

the core would have to be the most massive ive seen. heres a floor plate. the width of ICC is basically 64m (about same as former WTC) and core measures 33m x33m.
only 14m-16m space between core and facade.those structural columns are a whopping 3mx3m.

i m glad to see such a huge core n big fat columns ...
n they are progressing slowly ...
so that the high grade concrete can cure to its strength ...
there will soon be belt trusses / outriggers ...
icc is a piece of structural study ...
i'd feel safe eating on the top floor in a few years ...
maybe they should set up a line now for reservation ...

Huh!? You do know the "wet" refers to the ground, not the water in the pool rite? Since when is sand @ a beach slippery? what kinda logic is that? :)

Besides, it's all about preventing lawsuits anyways.. you think they care if u PK? :)

Life core is well progressing but other parts are lacking behind.

It's slow,
free-standing construction of the core structure is limited when the whole building is designed structurally as a whole,
if the main column and associated main floor deck still being constructed slowly,
the core structure has no way but to stop & wait.

Awesome!!! But...... I know ICC is much further away. But there's no way Hanoi road project can be taller. ICC is 484m.... Hanoi road is like 275m... yet it appears taller. Even with the distance factor.

Although I guess you made the ICC render twice as high as the harbourside, and overlayed the Hanoi Road render on top of the existing structure in place - so the proportions should be fine.

But anyway... great render!

abc
August 16th, 2006, 01:28 AM
so the yellow crane has switched to the perimeter of the building.

It's a different yellow crane to the other one that was bolted to the side of the core for a few days.

That was a FAVELLE like the two red core climbers... would like to know why it was there for such a short period... could have had a big lift.?

This new one looks like a Liebherr... no it's a Potain......electric luffer.. different tower sections... climbing frame sits halfway down tower as opposed to the top with the FAVS which are now owned by a Malaysian firm...

The BURJ has three of them on top and they're every where in Australia where some of them are made in Sydney.

The FAVELLE yellow one was a diesel run crane....

That job in SHANGHAI also has three on top...

wow those pics are great ,that cluster is going to be ridiculous ,

Houses do exist in HK but they are usually mansions along the mountain peak, Repulse Bay, or houses in relatively remote or not as built up areas in the New Territories or on Lantau Island. Land is expensive in HK because there is only a limited amount of flat land that is buildable. So the only feasible option with such a high population living in such a dense and small amount of land is to build up.

the core would have to be the most massive ive seen. heres a floor plate. the width of ICC is basically 64m (about same as former WTC) and core measures 33m x33m.
only 14m-16m space between core and facade.those structural columns are a whopping 3mx3m.
pic by aboveday>
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/5448/iccfloorplateqk4.jpg
That's a big ass core.thats not a good idea to me because what if a airplane were to crash into it.it would be just like the WTC???.so 1 event can take the hole elevator and stairs down.so the people in the upper floor's are screwed????????????????????????????????

superchan7
August 30th, 2006, 01:43 AM
The core is the all-important central structure of the building. If my memory serves me correctly, one reason that WTC failed was because too much of its support relied on the outer shell, which was thoroughly demolished when the planes crashed into it.

There were many other reasons why the WTC structure failed, but let's hope that our superscrapers don't get put to such tests again. Our buildings are designed to house people, not to withstand airliner impacts.

Also, I'm surprised that the building is asymmetric with respect to the core. Is this normal in most supertalls and other skyscrapers?

A poured concrete core like in this building is much better/stronger than the sheetrock clad core that the World Trade Center had. The sheetrock core of the World Trade Center was heavily damaged by the airplane impact, wiping out all of the stairways down out of the building.

CULWULLA
August 30th, 2006, 02:20 AM
^ the core was effectively melted by extreme heat caused by airplane fuel.
the wtc was constructed like pack of cards. the impact was actually a perfect way of dropping the structures. terrible.

amaddry
August 30th, 2006, 05:33 AM
My understanding is that the World Trade Center core wasn't destroyed by high heat but was shredded and made unusable by the chunks of the airplane flying through the building. So people could not get out of the building and then the high heat eventually melted the light weight framing between the core and the outer columns leading to the collapse.

I think any building designed purely for efficiency will not surpass 150-180m. That seems to be the upper limit on cheap boxes.

Something this tall is usually built to show off, and I'm not too surprised that the core takes up so much floor space.

US7 has super high strength and really thick concrete wall for the core. Something like a lot of Asian skyscraper had been adopting for a long time. Skyscraper construction in America didn't use this method until after September 11th, and only a major landmark building though.
Those concrete core are extremely strong. I bet they need at least 10 A380 crashing into it just to make a small hole.

vvil, you know that too. How can hk developer possibly design a skyscraper with low efficiency? they would try their best just to get extra few sq ft here and there. Low efficient skyscraper won't happen in hk. hehe...i am sure that's the best they can do for US7.

Need I remind you of the Library Tower in downtown Los Angeles.. Some in Seattle are built like that as well, remember earthquake prone regions..
the concrete core in that building is ridiculously strong, reinforced in multiple directions... It supposed to be able to withstand up to an 8.5 quake (richter scale) which is well over 9+on the mecali scale.. lots of the other towers in LA have concrete cores as well..

before Taipei 101, the library tower was the tallest bulding ever constructed that was built that strrong. Even then, Taipei 101 was built to withstand quakes in the high 7 point range; not the 8+ range like the library tower, so its still safe to say its the tallest (310 meters) most re-inforced building on the planet..

Also Miami has very strict codes so most of their high rises are made of concrete, with very thick concrete cores as well.. If I remember correctly, the glass in the high rises must withstand up to around 150mph!! you would be able to go right up to your window in a storm like that and watch whats happening below in relative saftey... with that thought in my head, I still cant begin to imagine how many people in New Orleans took refuge in the high-rises downtown...

well ... pretty much most of hk is planned / developed during the british era ...
n like whatever being planned hk has nothing to do with china ... haa haa ...

coz in beijing ...
they can demolish the homes of hundreds of thousands of ppl ...
just to build those olympic stadiums ...
thats how china plan their city ...

Interesting podium of The Arch...

Great updates! Too bad ICC only progressed one storey since last update. Meanwhile, phase 6 North Tower was more than satisfactory.

Yo Blair! Wazzup? It's kewl to live in da Bay Area. You get bamboozled by CNN and Fox and gangsta rap, but who cares?
Take a look at this diagram and you'll see what was built when.

Yo!

when someone brought up "planning" .. i thought they refer to the planning of the city ... like infrastructure n zoning n stuff ...
not projects built by private developers ...

of coz there are lots new crazy projects going on in HK ...

but nimbys in hk now r always rejecting for everyting ...
making everything so damn political ...

Good to see the podium coming. I found that Union Square was to much out of the way when you're walking through Kowloon. You do not go there as a tourist.

If the podium brings enough interesting stuff maybe it can become a tourist thing.

Yes the podium looks great, this part is now becoming a real part of the city, 2 years ago when I was there it was a bit death, but soon it will come alive!

Thanks aboveday for posting the interior renderings.

Unfortunately, 1 million sq. ft is nothing very appealing...

sorry but i think the mall looks a bit tacky for what it's being marketed to be (like similar tier as ifc) - and the facade doesn't really go with the arch as well ... like a total clash...
