oz.fil July 29th, 2006, 10:26 AM mmm... id rather go to the beaches then go to the city if i go to hawaii...
dallas July 30th, 2006, 05:58 AM Agreed, Honalulu is not the best, but it's not Hawaii though, if you know what I mean. Honalulu is a proper city, with the crowds, traffic and high rises that go with all that. To see the proper Hawaii you have to go the other islands which are just stunning; ABC have you got any photos of the other islands, or the even of Oahu, on the opposite side of the island to Honalulu? That side was very nice back in the 90's when I visited.
GaryinSydney July 30th, 2006, 06:39 AM I visited Hawaii in May this year for the first time and i was really impressed. I stayed in Waikiki and the place was really nice with quality streetscapes, shopping and facilities - something the GC should aim towards.
As for Honolulu city as a whole, well it is very diverse and contains some great areas like Kahala and Manoa. I only spent 10 days there (and my partner and i did go to the Big Island on a volcano tour etc which was fab) but i definitely want to go back there as it offers a great combination of resort/city/sightseeing options.
For me, the highlights were the fantastic shopping. Check out Ala Moana center, which has a range of great shops, & imo is better than anything we have in Australia (plus low prices compared to here). We also went a couple of times each to the Pearlridge center (nr pearl harbour) and Kahala Mall, plus our first WallMart which was open 24 hours and 3 Tower records, open to midnight.
You mightn't all be shopaholics like me, but i was truly impressed by Honolulu.

The old buildings have so much more quality and identity than those Dubai looking new ones! Horrible to see the demolishment of beautiful modernism buildings for ugly simplistic (and populistic) mirror glas towers.
