View Full Version : How busy is your airport?
Myron July 24th, 2006, 09:04 AM My first post and thread ever after creating an account a few months ago :)
Anyway, my airport, Sydney International Airport (SYD) is the busiest airport in Australia, in terms of both passengers and flights. A total of 43 international airlines serves sydney airport. Here's the link if you want to see what they are.
http://www.sydneyairport.com.au/SACL/Flight+Info/Airlines/International/default.htm
The latest figures are from 04/05 show that the airport carries about 28.3 million passengers annually, of which 9.6 million are international, and there was a total of 286 484 aircraft movements in that year, of which 56 355 were international. For more details:

So what about the airport in your city, big and small?
LordMandeep July 25th, 2006, 03:07 AM Toronto has close to 30 million passnegers and growing every year.
yuval5 July 25th, 2006, 03:14 AM well tel aviv's ben gurion airport had like 9 million passengers last year, but i guess this year we will have less :( although lots of new airlines started flying to tel aviv this year
hkskyline July 25th, 2006, 04:05 AM Hong Kong handled almost 41 million passengers in 2005.
http://www.hongkongairport.com/eng/aboutus/statistics/ms200512.pdf
Bitxofo July 25th, 2006, 05:30 AM Barcelona El Prat airport had got more than 28 million passengers in the last 12 months.
;)
30 million passengers are expected for the year 2006.
:wink2:
JAB323 July 25th, 2006, 05:32 AM Baltimore-Washington International. It's packed every time I go there.
JustHorace July 25th, 2006, 06:14 AM Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL, Manila)
I'm not sure about this figure but I think they'll be expecting, more or less, 20 million passengers this year.
There are 32 airlines which fly regularly to MNL.
Mosaic July 25th, 2006, 10:41 AM Bangkok International Airport got 37 million passengers last year.
staff July 25th, 2006, 11:01 AM Even though Copenhagen is a quite small "big city", it's airport CPH Intl. gets well over 20 million passengers because of it's Star Alliance hub status and strategic location in Northern Europe. The airport has direct flights to all continents except for Oceania (will hopefully change soon).
However, it seems to have reached it's capacity since its terminals are terribly overcrowded. Still, it gets awards such as "Best airport in the world" and "Most efficient airport in the world" every consecutive year.
An expansion is very welcome though.
Nadini July 25th, 2006, 11:07 AM Well basically right now it's 0 passengers/day ... (Beirut) hehe, I think you all know the situation.

Wow so London has...4 international airports? (I assume Luton is domestic only because I don't see any international airlines), but I've never knew Stanstead or London City Airport existed... :runaway:
Geaux Tigers July 25th, 2006, 03:17 PM My airport, Dallas/Ft. Worth International (DFW), is considered the world's third busiest in terms of aircraft movements (takeoffs & landings) at 712,000 per year. It is also the 6th busiest in terms of passengers at around 60,000,000 each year.

London has 5 international airports. Even though most of the airlines that operates from there are from the UK/Ireland, they fly to all over Europe.
Stansted is the #1 LCC airport in the London area - whereas London City Airport is mostly for business travel (due to it's central location very close to Canary Wharf for example).
SE9 July 25th, 2006, 04:18 PM Thanks staff :)
Right now, Luton is the UK's fastest growing airport... but it won't catch up to Stanstead any time soon.
David-80 July 25th, 2006, 09:36 PM Jakarta CGK, 25-28 million Pax this year, the busiest in Indonesia.
cheers
Nadini July 25th, 2006, 09:41 PM Do you know how long it would take to repair the 3 runways? :(
It wasn't badly hit, I would say around 2-3 days, but the problem is the gas tanks. Well actually the real problem is the humanitarian crisis happening currently. The runway is no big deal.
egm_ar July 26th, 2006, 01:49 AM RES/SARE - Resistencia Intl. Airport, Argentina, is about this busy...

:(
104,542 passengers in 2005; its record year was 1998 with almost 200,000.
It's been almost historically between the 10th and 12th busiest airport of Argentina (Being EZE and AEP at Buenos Aires, with 7 million each one +/- the number 1 and 2).
ChicagoSkyline July 26th, 2006, 02:00 AM Here is for our glory Chicago Airport System is comprised of O'Hare International and Midway International Airports *. The statistics include monthly flight operations, passenger totals and cargo tonnage. The reports are compiled as the result of a monthly total provided by the airlines and summarized by the Chicago Department of Aviation.

ChicagoSkyline July 26th, 2006, 02:03 AM World's busiest airport
Chicago has steps on it all over... :) :runaway:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_busiest_airport
O'Hare rivals Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as the world's busiest airport. However in 2005, Hartsfield overtook O'Hare as the world's busiest airport in terms of takeoffs and landings. This was mainly due to the federal government imposing flight caps at O'Hare to reduce flight delays.(Resulted in the massive expansion underway!) For the first half of 2006, O'Hare turned out to be the busiest.[1] In terms of total passengers served, Hartsfield has held the title of world's busiest airport for 8 years now. Both airports serve primarily as hubs for cross-country connections, although O'Hare also has a strong international airline presence with flights to more than 60 foreign destinations. O'Hare ranks fourth in the nation's top ten international gateways; only JFK International Airport in New York City, LAX in Los Angeles, and Miami International Airport better it.
Chicago Midway International Airport, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Held from 1932 until O'Hare took the title in 1962, Midway was the world's busiest airport by passenger and aircraft movements. Before World War II, Chicago Midway was the origin or destination of one in four U.S. airline flights.
Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Largest number of passengers annually (before 1998)
Most arrivals and departures annually (before 1998, 2001–2004).
AmherstMan July 26th, 2006, 02:07 AM Buffalo International Airport has over 5 million passengers. The passenger rate was supposed to be at 5 million in 2020. This is forcing the airport to expand.
DiggerD21 July 26th, 2006, 02:08 AM Hamburg Airport could (should) be busier for its size. In 2005 10.677.268 passengers used Hamburg Airport, which is practically already 100% of the capacity used. Hamburg Airport has only 4 intercontinental connections (flights to tourist destinations in northern africa being not counted as intercontinental here): New York (Newark), Toronto, Dubai, Shanghai (planned). The rest are within Europe and directly bordering countries.
However, the airport seems to be busy with little intervalls between landing/starting planes.
ChicagoSkyline July 26th, 2006, 02:23 AM City management has committed to a $6 billion capital investment plan to increase the airport's capacity and decrease delays by an estimated 79 percent[2]. This plan was approved by the FAA in October 2005 and will involve a reconfiguration of the airfield and addition of terminal space.

mdiederi July 26th, 2006, 02:58 AM Las Vegas's McCarran International should hit over 44 million passengers this year. 41 million last year. Mostly tourists. Busiest airport in the country at night time. Mostly Boeing 737's, very few 747's. Another gate is in the planning stages now, and a possible new frieght airport will be built south of town.

Myron July 26th, 2006, 10:56 AM Correct me if I'm wrong but I think airports in the USA are ranked busiest in the world mostly because of the very large amount of domestic passnegers! For example Atlanta hartford was the world's most busiest airport recently (don't know about now) but Atlanta is not really a very big city in terms of international scale! I think if you ranked busiest airports in terms of INTERNATIONAL passengers, only 2 or 3 american airports are in top 30!

Bombay Boy July 26th, 2006, 12:50 PM around 20 million this year (india's busiest)
sk July 26th, 2006, 01:07 PM the closest to where i live is Larnaka international airport.
It handles around 5 million passengers/year but its capacity is only for 2,5 million.
A new airport is under construction nearby,it will be ready in 2009.It will be for 7,5 million passengers/year with expansion plans allowing it to handle 9,5 million/year.
Judazzz July 26th, 2006, 01:56 PM Closest airport to me is Amsterdam Schiphol, with 44.2 million passengers and 1.45 millions tons of cargo in 2005 one of the busiest in Europe.

Yep, that's a well known (I hope) fact. The United States has an enormous and extensive domestic network. I was at KATL last year, and just a small section is used for international arrivals/departures compared to the rest of the airport. Most planes I saw land/take of were around the size of a 737-400.
staff July 26th, 2006, 04:01 PM ^^
Americans fly domestic whereas Europeans mostly take the train (both domestic and intra-Europe) due to the short distances. For international passengers however, European airports walk all over American ones. European airports generally have more long haul routes and thus more widebody planes as well
In the "How many carriers from unique countries does your airport have"-thread, it was concluded that Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, the busiest airport in the world, doesn't even have 10 different carriers from unique countries in the world.
guinessbeer55 July 27th, 2006, 02:20 AM Seattle has got about 30,000,000 each year. Its the main hub of Alaska Airlines and its got direct flights to about ten cities in Asia and direct flights to London, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Moscow, Paris, and about ten cities in Mexico.

That can be true and nice observation. However, the thread is asking how "busy" is your airport? What is asking is how often are the planes taking off and landing in one minute time and trust me, you wouldn't want to live near O'hare Int. Airport for its amounts of passenger and cargo planes landing and taking off! :runaway: :runaway:
BTW, I wouldn't be too concer how they use the term "International" to the ranking, because in europe, every countries are next to each other and most of them are small in size so it is quite easy to fly by countries rather than states as US here, so that international stats is only good for european airports not for countries that are large in size and distant away from other of its neighboring nations! :)

Conclusion, Chicago O'Hare Int. Airport currently having the busiest traffic movements in the world!
panamaboy9016 July 27th, 2006, 07:12 AM I don't want to mess with you Chicagoskyline or anything like that but the Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the busiest airport in Passenger traffic and also the #1 in the world in landings and take offs.

No fouls taken panmaboy! :)
Anyway, yes ATL hartsfield was #1 world's buiest airport by passengers for couple of years! However, if you look at my linked that were rank by air traffic movements, you can see that Chicago O'hare is clearly the mothership of all! Since this thread ask how busy, don't forget that traffic are both passenger and cargo, I would consider the more numbers of planes taking off and land is the greatest concern here since the busier the traffice movement, the more noise and distractions it creates! :sleepy:
BTW, did I mention that Chicago O'Hare air control tower is the toughest air tower in the world to work in!

As you can see that Chi o'hare and ATL hartsfield are very close in the air traffic movement volume, but don't forget that is because last couple of years, CHI O'Hare has been restricted by the FAA to reduced tons of flights so that can hopefully bring its delay time to 70%!!!! The casue now is taken to action by Chicago to expand our O'hare terminals, facilities and runways(I also posted above), next few years, you will see the air traffic movement handle by O'Hare jump back to "normal" and as the construction of expansion closing complete, it can handles one additional airport's traffic movement!!!
BTW, next of airports are way below in volume handle from No 3, so I would say that ATL Hartsfield is still in good shape! :)

Geaux Tigers July 28th, 2006, 06:19 AM It's so weird how Chicago and Atlanta beat all of the largest touristic cities and largest cities in the world in passengers!
Why do you think that's weird? Both cities are major hubs for three different airlines. Believe it or not, airlines may serve tourist cities, but that doesn't neccesary mean those cities will get more service than a hub city (like Chicago, Atlanta, or Dallas). Airlines make more money on business passengers, not tourists.
Rufus July 29th, 2006, 01:49 AM The closest near me is:
Raleigh-Durham International: about 10 million passengers, but its largest passenger number was about 12 million in 2000, but we all know what happened the next year. the only international flights are to London-Gatwick and I think Lufthansa is beginning flights from there.
the busiest in NC is Charlotte-Douglas International with about 28-29 million passengers annually. It is the nation's 17th busiest and the world's 33rd busiest, don't quote me on that, but it is rather busy in terms of passengers. Charlotte is one of the main gateways in the south for Lufthansa and British Airways. Charlotte is also the main hub for US Airways and now America West which joined with US Airways. the other hubs are Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.
DiggerD21 July 29th, 2006, 02:02 AM Closest airport to me is Amsterdam Schiphol,
Leaving out Eelde Airport, Bremen Airport is ca. 10-15 km closer to Groningen than Amsterdam (linear distance). ;)
Maxim98 July 29th, 2006, 02:11 AM Tampa International... 19.8m projected this year. It is mostly a destination airport, so I find that to be pretty great. Course, there are international flights to Canada, UK, Bahamas, Mexico, and a few other Caribbean nations...

Barajas serves as the gateway to the Iberian peninsula from the rest of Europe and the world, particularly Latin America. In 2005, 41,963,197 passengers used Barajas; it ranks as the world's 12th—and Europe's fifth—busiest airport.
On February 5, 2006, the immense Terminal 4 was inaugurated—making Barajas the world's largest airport, in terms of terminal area, with an area of more than one million square meters (11 million square feet). With the new addition, Barajas is designed to handle 70 million passengers annually.
Until June of 2006 Barajas was used by 18.074.156 passengers, being now the 4th airport in Europe.
In October the two new runaways will be 100% working so is expected to carries more than 50.000.000 people in 2007.

I agree with the point that the US is as large as most of the EU, which is more than 20 countries! So really, a LA-NY flight which is 3000 miles is domestic, whereas a Paris to London, which is 200 miles is international!
SE9 July 30th, 2006, 10:48 PM Its true that the US is large, but there are still more long-haul flights from European cities than American cities. I understand that the countries here are close, but most major airports in Europe deal with intercontinental flights. As staff said, there are far more international airliners in European hubs, than KATL or other large US hubs.
When I was in Atlanta last year, I saw most flights didn't go further than the south or east coast of America.
If you see this post by Monkey, you'll see that long-haul dominates London's agenda: http://skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=9395219&postcount=26
"Six of the world's 10 fastest-growing long-haul air routes involve London, with flights between the British capital and Dubai topping the list, according to figures published Tuesday." etc.

I am sorry, but why would you bring long-haul domination into this discussion? What does it that have anything to do with your busy airport other than that they are way bigger and slower?
Why would you pick on ATL Hartsfield about is lack of international flights when it is indeed a major us hub for domestic flights? Why didn't use NY JFK or LAX for your international comparison?
Just how busy is your city airport is by taking a look at the all the landing and taking off planes in one amount of timeframe not some long haul domination business that you were discussing eventho european countries are so close to each other and small in relative compare to US! :)

ORD has 6 right now. They will have 8 [6 of which will be parallel to each other] after the field's modernization program is complete.
USAPatriot July 31st, 2006, 08:57 AM Seattle International or Seatac is the bussiest Airport in the northwest. I know it's one of the bussiest in the country. I don't know where.
SE9 July 31st, 2006, 09:39 AM I am sorry, but why would you bring long-haul domination into this discussion? What does it that have anything to do with your busy airport other than that they are way bigger and slower?
If you look at the posts before mine, you'll see that the topic of "Domestic and International Traffic" was raised.
In this post (http://skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=9386175&postcount=34), someone raised the point that "airports in the USA are ranked busiest in the world mostly because of the very large amount of domestic passnegers"
... and it continues from there. Read page 2 before suggesting that I brought short haul/long haul discussion here... and there is nothing wrong with it.
The amount of international flights an airport has usually goes in correlation with the average size of plane that take off and land there. It is also good to discuss the purpose of an airport.
Why would you pick on ATL Hartsfield about is lack of international flights when it is indeed a major us hub for domestic flights? Why didn't use NY JFK or LAX for your international comparison?
I used KATL, because it is the biggest, and the last American airport I went to. If you want me to use JFK, I will:
JFK had 37,518,143 passengers (18,534,215 international passengers) last year, with the most frequent route being London-NewYork. That is the largest figure of any US airport. This results in JFK aircraft movement statistics being pretty low compared to larger domestic hubs like KATL. In conclusion, JFK handles many passengers compared to its relatively low aircraft movement figures. This means more wide-body aircraft use JFK than any other airport.
Just how busy is your city airport is by taking a look at the all the landing and taking off planes in one amount of timeframe not some long haul domination business that you were discussing eventho european countries are so close to each other and small in relative compare to US! :)
As you can see with my previous point, it does not matter as much how many aircraft take off or land, but how many passengers use an airport. This is because aircraft with high traffic-movement generally handle smaller planes.
A busy airport like JFK would not even come in the world top-20 if we compared traffic movement, so it is not the best way to gauge the activity of an airport.
Nick in Atlanta August 1st, 2006, 05:02 AM I think that many visitors to ATL believe that because the airport only has a half-dozen or so European and Asian airlines that it doesn't have many long-haul international flights. Actually, it's mainly because Delta has driven all but the strongest non-SkyTeam airlines (BA & LH) out of town. Additionally, Delta does not currently own or use 747s or A340s for any of its service, even on the longest of the long-haul routes. It uses 777s and 767s, and may even copy Continental by using modifies 757s on some of the shorter trans-Atlantic flights from JFK to additional small cities in England primarily.
Back in the early 90's, Atlanta had daily (or near daily) service from Japan Airlines (747), Sabena (various equipment), British Airways (DC-10), Lufthansa (747), Varig (767), KLM (747), SwissAir (747), Aeromexico (various equipment), AeroPostal (defunct Venezuelan airline), Cayman (737), Air Jamaica (A310) and others throughout this period. As the various airline alliances formed and solidified (SkyTeam with Delta, Star and OneWorld), most of the non-SkyTeam airlines left ATL for nearby alliance friendly hub cities and SkyTeam Airlines that hadn't flown into ATL started offering service. KLM left and started flying from Memphis, which was a Northwest-KLM mini-alliance city, but after a decade or so the Northwest-KLM mini-alliance joined SkyTeam and KLM soon returned to ATL. :)
Here's a list of Delta's international flights out of Atlanta. I wrote this list down in the beginning of 2006 and from what I've seen most of these flights have been implemented. If you want to check just go to www.amadeus.net or any other airline ticket booking website.
