Time for a thread to talk about the Philadelphia sports teams, specifically the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, and Sixers.

Now is a good time to make this thread, with training camp just starting. Rookies and selected veterans reported to camp last Thursday, July 20, and the rest of the team reported yesterday. This will be the Eagles' 11th year at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.

Not necessarily...

And sports reflect the culture of the city, so there is a bit of a tie in with urbanity.

I know there are several Philly people on SSC, as well as Delaware people, South Jersey people, general Eagles fans, so hopefully this thread sees some success.

Eagles 12-4 NFC East Champs this year.... book it!

It will be tough but I think they can pull it out. The last 6 games could potentially be a rough set of games and I think they will need to be 8-2 or 9-1 by that point if they want to be comfortable. Playing Indy on the road and then 3 dividion rivals on the road during this stretch will test this team. If they can stay healthy I don't see why they can't win the East.

I like your optimism. One good thing, now that the poison has been removed from the locker room, we should see a TEAM this year (I'm hoping). Donovan has looked sharp so far, he's primed to have a big year. But can any of these WRs actually overachieve? Because looking at that cast, they will need an overachiever or two.
Also the D-Line has been upgraded quite a bit, and look like they will be a force this year. That will take some heat off the defensive backfield. I'll keep my fingers crossed and say 10-6.

I think the Birds will go 9-7. I am predicting that they won't make the playoffs. That way, I win either way: either they make the playoffs, which I obviously want to see, or they miss the playoffs and I am right.

Reggie Brown is going to be a good player in his career. The only question is if he's a legitimate #1 in only his second season. But I am sure he'll make a good #1 by his 4th or 5th year.

The biggest improvement is in the defense. The defensive line, the biggest liability for the team last year, looks exponentially better. Howard can line up at End or Tackle and be effective at either spot, our Ends have more depth with Trent Cole and McDougle coming off of the bench, and Bunkley and Patterson will be our Tackles of the future. The line should take pressure off of the secondary, and so Jim Johnson will be able to play around more with those guys, and have them drop into coverage more often if necessary.

I am still not sold on Dhani Jones. He still can't cover a tight end. The weak side doesn't look too hot either.

I don't know who I hate more: the Devils or the Rangers.

I get up more for the Devils. They have been a major stumbling block of the Flyers for 10-15 years now, while the Rangers really haven't been in the hunt. I take much greater satisfaction when we crack Brodeur and beat the Devils....yes!

Spooky873
August 24th, 2006, 04:20 AM
But when the Rangers are good, the rivalry with the Flyers is more intense than with the Devils. The past 8 years its been a bit onesided though since the Rangers blew, but this past year the rivalry was great. It will continue into next year.

Esche is from upstate NY. I heard he might be on the move next year, I wonder where too.

sjerseyrez
August 24th, 2006, 04:28 AM
That is true. When both teams are going good, it is a great rivalry. As far as Esche is concerned, to be honest I haven't been heard the latest on him. In my opinion, the Flyers wouldn't deal Esche unless they were 100% comfortable with Nittymaki as the main starter. I'm not sure they're at that point yet with Nittymaki.

xzmattzx
August 24th, 2006, 04:38 AM
The Flyers almost traded Esche to Vancouver for Bertuzzi at the trade deadline this past season.

I think the Flyers are reluctant to trade Esche because Niittymaki isn't quite solid enough to be the great goalie you need to go deep in the playoffs.

Nice win for the Birds on Sunday. Now they play the Giants at home. Should be a great game; I think one of these two teams will win the NFC East. The Eagles are 3 point favorites, last time I saw.

Here's a clip of the "Watch This" play from Sunday. (If you didn't see it, Fox showed Andy Reid walking the sideline, mouthing, "Watch. Just watch." Then on the play, McNabb faked a run so well and hid the ball behind his hip so well that he hooked every player on the Texans into thinking it was a run play, and Donte' Stallworth was wide open.)

In other news, Simon Gagne signed a 5 year deal. I haven't seen the details about that yet. Good to have him under contract now.

It's one game against not so great opposition, but I am cautiously optimistic. For those who think this is the same Eagles team as last year...it's not. The Eagles worked very hard at upgrading several key positions this past offseason, particularly in the trenches. What is really amazing, and I mean amazing, is the defensive line is so deep right now that they can put their entire 2nd string in and hardly miss a beat. It's obviously a part of the game plan, take advantage of the depth along the defensive front and shuffle guys in and out the whole game to stay fresh. And to think this was a glaring weakness last year...

So far so good. Donovan's healthy, Westbrook's healthy, everybody else is healthy. They've added a new weapon in Donte Stallworth, who stepped right in and had a huge game. It's looking good right now, Looooking gooood.

xzmattzx
September 13th, 2006, 10:16 PM
^^ Agreed. We went from a bottom 5 defesive line to a top 5 defesive line. Darren Howard was a huge pick-up, and will force opposing offensive lines to watch both d-ends. And Bunkley will be starting by the end of the year most likely, which means that we have our two DT's for the future.

Matt McCoy had a good game against Houston, which was comforting.

I didn't. I did catch part of an interview Jon Runyan did on ComcastSportsNet last night. He was talking about time management and about how long it takes McNabb to get the play from Andy Reid. We'll see how that goes.

Another topic being heavily discussed is how vulnerable Michael Lewis is in a zone defense. He seems to let defenders behind him too often. Some people suspect that his starting role might be in jeopardy if this continues to happen.

There really isn't much talk about the Flyers. No one expects much out of them, and besides, this is football season. Hockey talk will pick up when cool weather arrives, and hockey will be huge again in January and February once football is over.

Surprisingly, people are more interested in the Phillies than the Flyers right now. This is despite the history of a terrible front office over the past decade or so and the bonehead manager still at the helm. The old regime was finally moved out of town, with Pat Burrell being the lone exception, and the team has a new core of players to build around: Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Cole Hamels.

Then you have the Sixers. With the garbage that the NBA is spewing right now, basketball has become as irrelevant as ever in Philly. The only talk we'll be hearing about this season is the same stuff as last year: fire Billy King, trade Iverson, start over from scratch. I could care less about the Sixers right now because the NBA in general sucks.

I think the Flyers will have a pretty bad season. I believe they're better than they're playing, but the defense was a problem last year and it wasn't addressed at all this offseason. Keep your eyes out for www.firebobbyclarke.com soon, I'm sure someone will make the site this season.

I expected the Flyers to be mediocre this season. I thought they would get into the playoffs as the 7th or 8th seed. I don't know if that will happen now.

Who cares though, it's football season.

Truth be told, I have a similar feeling of apathy towards the Flyers, that is usually reserved for the Phillies. I don't know what will happen, but Ed Snider had one of his mini-eruptions after the Buffalo game that resulted in 3 Flyers being let go (Nedved, Baumgartner, and I forget the other name). What is interesting about that is some media outlets are confirming that it was Snider's move, not Bob Clarke's. Doesn't bode well for Bob Clarke, and it shouldn't. He tried to call the bluff on the rule changes by picking up more big, slow defensemen, like Hatcher. Bad gamble, you lose. The only Flyers game I've watched all year is the Sabres game, and that's only because of my childhood allegiance to the Sabres.

We have to hold out hope for the pass-happy Eagles for now, they're the only team of note right now, as far as I'm concerned. I hope the Flyers do right the ship eventually. Winter will be boring without a competitive team to follow.

10AM news conference announced by the Flyers. Ken Hitchcock fired, Bobby Clarke resigns after being asked to by the Flyers.

*Correction: Bobby Clarke said he approached the Flyers brass 10 days ago stating he was no longer interested in being a GM. Said he was burnt out, and started to notice he had lost his zest for the job late last year. That would explain the waiver move initiated by Snider a few days ago.

Good news for Flyers fans, assuming now that the team will move forward in constructing a team consistent with the current decade. Of course it'll take a few years to completely flush the talent pool, which is probably what needs to happen.

I couldn't help but thinking as they were getting their butts whooped by the Sabres - if he was trying to build a team in the image of the great '70s Flyer teams, those teams would have wiped the ice up with his.

I guess you won't see the firebobbyclarke.com site now unless he manages to hook his tentacles into some other unsuspecting team.

I'll miss Hitch's back-and-forth verbal spars with Lindy Ruff though. Those two are pretty funny when they get going.

xzmattzx
October 23rd, 2006, 09:46 PM
I just got back from Tampa. Great game yesterday, except for the last 5 seconds. I'm glad I made the trip though. Pictures to come later.

I'm glad that Bobby Clarke is gone. He stunk as a GM, and kept signing big, slow guys. He did play a part in drafting, and the Flyers have scouted and drafted well in the past 5 or 10 years, so I am a little bit concerned as to how our scouting and drafting of young guys will be in the future. But cleaning house was definitely a good move. Now we won't have to see any dump-and-chase b.s.

sjerseyrez, the Phils are also something to look forward to, at least long-term if not next summer. We have a new core group of players in Ultey, Howard, and Hamels. The lockerroom environment has changed as the old regime (Abreu, Bell, etc) got shipped out. We still have Charlie Mayberry managing, but he's in the last year of his contract and it looks right now like he won't be re-signed.

We get our first glimpse of John Stevens at the helm. Looking okay so far from what I've seen so far.

sjerseyrez

We'll see with the Phillies. I agreed with management this past season when they started dumping players like Abreu, it has allowed the younger guys like Utley and Howard to take a more prominent role on the team. They needed a major shift in direction anyhow, hadn't gone anywhere with that old core, and never were going to go anywhere.

We'll see with the Flyers. I caught the end of the game last night. They were hustling, working hard for the new coach. It looked promising. Then again, it was Atlanta's 3rd game in 4 nights and a back-to-back on top of that, so they definitely would have been feeling it by the end of the game.

sjerseyrez
October 29th, 2006, 10:49 AM
Yeah, the Flyers are brutal right now. They played hard in the first period and were actually outshooting the Pens by a healthy margin. But when they face some adversity, they completely fold, which is what happened in the 2nd period.

I hate to say it, because I liked Bob Clarke, but his decisions over the past couple of years with the new CBA and rule changes in place have proved extremely damaging to this team. Now, especially on the blue line, they're stuck with a couple of high-priced dinosaurs in Hatcher and Rathje. What was Clarke thinking?! Just awful.

But it only starts there. There is so much wrong with the Flyers. I think Holmgren and Stevens are going to try taking a patient approach with the current team, and try to instill some sorely lacking confidence. But if debacles like that continue to happen they're going to have to eat some high-priced salaries, dump certain veterans, and give some kids with the Phantoms a shot. Time to tear it down and start over again.

This thread's been comatose, probably since I'm the only one using it. Moreover, all of the teams have sucked recently.

Things are starting to turn around now though. The Eagles beat Washington and should cruise against Tennessee en route to a big showdown against Indianapolis. The Sixers are actually above .500 this late into the season. And the Flyers have gotten 3 points in their last 2 games, including a 7-4 win over Anaheim. The Deuces Wild Line each had a goal and assist in that game. The Flyers are tied with LA right now at the second intermisson. You can hear plenty of Philly fans in the crowd, with several "Let's Go Fly-ers" chants starting up once in a while.:)

The season's over. McNabb is out for the year.

It would be nice if the team played with some heart, a winning attitude, and some team spirit. There's no real leader of this team.

CBS's coverage of games continues to suck. This is the second year in a row that they referred to #36 as "Michael Westbrook".

sjerseyrez
November 20th, 2006, 04:04 AM
Yup. I'm afraid the Eagles without McNabb are not a very good team, which means they weren't so hot in the first place. Air Andy has a bunch of receivers who can't catch the ball. Nothing new there, Air Andy has been using sub-standard receivers for years now, because 'it's all about the system'. So who gets most of the catches? Westbrook and Buckhalter, not the receivers, what does that tell you? Reggie Brown seems to have a terminal case of the dropsies, and that other guy...what's his name? Hank Baskett, is all but invisible. LJ Smith is a big and supposedly immensely talented TE, who we've heard for years now is about to have his 'breakout' year. We're still waiting. I miss Chad Lewis, he may not have had all the 'physical skills', but throw him the ball and he would more than likely come down with the catch. He was underappreciated in my opinion, a clutch TE. At least Donte Stallworth is back in the lineup, hopefully he can provide a spark and another viable option, since defenses are going to be keying in on Westbrook big time.

The defense has been a disappointment too, but really it's the offense that's the biggest issue. In my opinion it's a lack of balance. Without McNabb, they better find that balance quick, and start running the ball effectively, or playoff hopes will be extinguished early, just like last year. Look for Andy to take a trip down Memory Lane, and go with AJ Feeley over Garcia.

It's hard to get too enthused about the Philly sports scene right now. We're in a low ebb. Perhaps the Phillies will make some noise this year and finally get in the playoffs again. We USED to have a contending Flyers team to follow every winter, but, well, not much to say about that.

It will be interesting to see if the Eagles show some guts and character, come out and give Indy a battle. Not likely based on what they've shown so far this year, but I'll hold out hope.

Iverson's career in Philly is over. He asked for a trade and he'll get it. His nametag has been removed from over his locker. Comcast is reporting that AI will be traded either tonight or tomorrow; Sacramento seems to be the most interested, and Phil Jackson is intrigued at having Iverson. Charlotte, New Orleans, San Antonio, and Denver have all backed out. Minnesota has been rumored to be interested but I don't know if this has any ground.

I'm glad that I was proven wrong about the Eagles being done...lol. Jeff Garcia has come in and done a nice job. It certainly helps that he already has plenty of experience with the West Coast Offense from his days in SF. This next game against the Giants will be another stiff test. Again, I feel pessimistic about the chances of the Eagles D being able to stop the Giants running game, which is stronger than the 'Skins running game. The Redskins dominated in time of possession and total number of offensive plays. I would anticipate more of the same this coming week. Again, the D will need to be opportunistic and come up with some key turnovers for the Eagles to have a chance in my opinion.

The Sixers will deal AI when it's right. Might not be within the next couple of days, we'll see. One thing for sure, they don't miss him at 'practice'. After all it's practice we're talking about, not a game...not a game...not a game.

Meanwhile with the Sixers, I and everyone else is openly rooting for the Sixers to completely suck this year. We have a very good chance at getting the first overall pick and drafting Greg Oden.

Looks like I was off on the record prediction but NFC East Champs looks about right.

Speaking of Philly sports, the Flyers finally ended a 10-game losing streak with a hard-fought 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Eagles had a good run. At least we're back atop the NFC East. Next year's goal is to get to the Super Bowl again.

One thing is for sure, the Saints are not a feel good story in the Delaware Valley. In fact, most people at the bar and on the streets at the game are disgusted that such a fairweather fanbase like New Orleans gets treated like they "deserve" a win.

Now it's on to the Phillies. Maybe the Phillies (The Phillies ?!?) can bring a title to Philadelphia.

Most of the experts think Garcia will be the Eagles opening-day starter.

It depends. Garcia could be offered starting money in free agency. If that happens, the Eagles will not match any offer. Will someone offer him starter's money, though? Teams that might try to get him (Oakland, Minnesota, Tampa Bay) won't have as good of an offense as the Eagles, so Garcia might flounder like he did in Cleveland and Detroit.

McNabb isn't scheduled to be healed until September at the earliest, November or even december at the latest. So, a quarterback will most likely be needed to start the season off.

The Eagles have already stated that they want to keep Garcia. I have to believe that staying with the Eagles is an ideal situation for Garcia as well. Like has been said, he struggled already with two bad teams, and is now sitting pretty with a solid, productive offense. That being said, though, McNabb will be the starter again once he's healthy.

They had a great run, but New Orleans deserved to win that game. They won the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, which was a surprise. I figured the Saints might be able to roll on offense, which they did, but other than a couple big plays (Stallworth bomb, Westbrook run) their defense also did a great job limiting the Eagles offense. They're looking to me like the NFC rep in the Supe this year.

McNabb's injury is very serious... and it takes a long time to fully recover from... I've suffered the same injury myself (though I'm not a world class athlete with world class therapists and equipment, etc)... look what happened when the Dolphins rushed Culpeper back! Say if McNabb is healthy at the mid-point of next season... and Garcia has the Eagles sitting pretty at 6-2 or something... do not expect to see McNabb play next year unless things fall apart or Garcia goes down... it's all about winning... the Eagles should probably be Super Bowl bound this year if it wasn't for Andy's boneheaded game management... and it was Garcia who was at the helm for the Eagles' improbable turnaround

When McNabb is healthy, he will be the starter, as sjerseyrez stated. If the Eagles can keep Garcia, though, they will make sure that McNabb is fully healed (they would anyway) because they have good "insurance" to get them through the beginning of the season.

Garcia is not the only reason the Eagles finished well to end the season. Remember that the Eagles had the #1 or #2 offense throughout the season, including being the #1 offense for the first 5 or 6 games. The offense wasn't as big of a problem as the defense was. The Eagles did terrible against the run during the middle of the season, couldn't force turnovers, and couldn't keep teams from going down the field. The defense also played better once their winning streak started.

Look for a Forsberg trade some time in the next week. Forsberg's contract is up at the end of the year, so the Flyers would like to bring him back once the offseason arrives. The Flyers will have $21-22 million in cap space, so they'll be trying to bring in several big names to get Forsberg to come back next year.

January 29, 2007

Sources are telling Comcast Sportsnet that Peter Forsberg has agreed to lift his no-trade clause with the Philadelphia Flyers for the purpose of going to a playoff contender.

Multiple teams have contacted the Flyers about the possibility of obtaining the two-time Stanley Cup champion, including the Maple Leafs, Canadiens and the Rangers.

Under normal circumstances, a player of Forsberg's status could easily land the Flyers a first-round pick and a top prospect, but his health status continues to be an issue for some teams. Sources tell Sportsnet a deal could revolve around a conditional future considerations trade built around Forsberg's performance and if or when he re-signs with the Flyers again in the off season.

There are supposedly 11 teams interested in Forsberg, including Toronto, Montreal, New York Rangers, San Jose, Colorado, Nashville, and Anaheim.

about Jeff Garcia and the offense, the Eagles's decision to bring in Marty Mornhinweg is something everyone overlooks when talking about the offense. Garcia did great, but I have no reason to believe that McNabb wont be better.

With the Sixers now the third or fourth worst team in the NBA, I guess Oden and Durant are out of the question, but it should still be a good draft. Just waiting for the Phils season to start.

Teams that have expressed serious interest in Forsberg in the past few days:

Anaheim
Vancouver
Detroit
Florida
Atlanta
Montreal
San Jose

Vancouver and Detroit are figured to be leaders, as they both have Swedish connections. (Forsberg is from Ornskoldsvik, and the other three players from that Swedish town all play for Vancouver: Naslund, and the Sedin twins.; Detroit has Lidstrom and Holmstrom, who hail from Sweden.)

Florida and Atlanta are less interested than other teams, and might be more interested in Mike York or Geoff Sanderson.

Reports: Flyers agree to deal Forsberg to Predators
ESPN.com news services

The Philadelphia Flyers have agreed to trade Peter Forsberg to the Nashville Predators for Scottie Upshall, Ryan Parent and two draft picks, according to a reports by Canada's TSN and the Philadelphia Daily News on Thursday night.

Both media outlets cited unidentified sources in their reports and said the deal has not yet been approved by the league.

The draft picks reportedly were a first-round selection and a third-round pick.

Forsberg was a healthy scratch for the Flyers' game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Forsberg will be a free agent at the end of this season and has had lingering issues with his right foot. Forsberg has visited with doctors around the globe to find out why his foot hasn't felt right in his skate, the health issue mostly responsible for keeping him out 16 games this season.

But since Forsberg returned from an All-Star break trip to visit a specialist in Sweden, he's playing like his old self. He has three goals and nine assists in nine games since the break and 40 points in 40 games overall this season, showing his foot may at last be stable.

The Flyers had their press conference during the second intermission. They traded Forsberg to Nashville for Scottie Upshall (defenseman, playing for Nashville), Ryan Parent (defenseman, playing for Guelph of the OHL), and the Predators' 1st and 3rd round picks in the upcoming draft.

The Flyers traded Forsberg because Forsberg wouldn't commit to re-signing, and the Flyers wanted to get something from him in case he reitres at the end of the year from foot issues.

The Flyers won in New York today in their first game without Forsberg. If I'm correct, this was their first win of the season without Forsberg in the lineup. They improve to 1-14-3 without him in the lineup, and 15-20-5 with him in the lineup.

Upshall had a goal in his Flyers' debut.

I liked how the Flyers were agressive when killing penalties. They took advantage of the Rangers' system of putting 4 forwards out on the ice for a power play.

Knuble and Shanahan had a nasty hit. Hopefully both are okay.

Apparently, Hatcher is drawing some interest in trade talks. Holmgren better trade Hatcher before people find out that he's a lumbering fool on the ice. The Flyers are 4th in the league in penalty killing and apparently some people think it's because of Hatcher. If they can get anything for him, then it's a good trade.

Lastly, there will be no captain, probably for the rest of the season. There will be three Alternates: Hatcher and Gagne will continue to wear the "A", and Kapanen will get the third "A".

Chuck Finder: Flyers frequent losers these days
Sunday, March 04, 2007

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Remember the witch doctor. Remember Ross Lonsberry in nine seconds. Remember Bobby Clarke's four-tooth smirk and Bernie Parent's impenetrability and 11 consecutive losses anytime, anywhere to the dread orange and black. Remember the 15 ungodly years without a victory in the Commonwealth's other end: a streak of woe-39-3. Remember announcer Gene Hart handing out stat sheets detailing every damned game.

Today, when the Penguins strive to complete their inaugural perfect season against the rival Filthy Flyers after three decades of hostilities, remember those singular worst of times, those winters of discontent.

Mike Lange cannot forget. He has been the one Penguins constant throughout the 1974-89 Spectrum drought, the cross-state clashes, the spilled blood. "They never gave me the key to that city, for all those 42 games," the Hall of Fame announcer joked. Shoot, the Flyers' Hart once blamed that score all on Lange.

"In 1986, I did the fifth game of a five-game playoff series between the Flyers and Rangers for ESPN," Lange recalled. In the pregame, "Gene made it known to everybody, laughingly so in a way but also somewhat serious, that I was there and there was no way the Flyers could lose.

"So, uh. . . ." Pregnant pause.

"The Flyers lost."

Should the Penguins manage to vanquish Philadelphia this afternoon in Mellon Arena, it would mark their eighth consecutive victory against their longtime Goliath, doubling their previous longest streak against the Flyers and upgrading the 5-0-2 head-to-head record of their second Stanley Cup season, 1991-92. It would represent a teeny dose of karma decades in the making. It would be oh so delicious, but only an appetizer.

"That's just a modest eight," Lange said of the potential run of consecutive triumphs. "Only 34 more to go.

"That puts it into perspective. That tells you how long that streak was." To equal the Penguins' 42-game winless streak in Philadelphia, they would need to win every such meeting through early 2012.

For too long in this series, the Penguins were dead on the frozen water. They were the lesser team going so far back as to when general manager Ray Shero's dad was the Flyers' coach, the late Fred Shero. They were beaten out of the gate, Lonsberry's goal nine seconds into one affair -- still the quickest ever against the Penguins -- setting the tone for an 11-0 Spectrum loss Oct. 20, 1977. They were cow-kicked in the closing seconds Dec. 20, 1979, when some orange phantom illegally booted the puck into the net for a 1-1 tie in the days before instant replay. That was how a bunch of 1979-'80 Flyers continued a 35-game unbeaten string that remains an NHL record. That was how their franchise kept the Penguins winless in Philadelphia from a 5-4 loss Feb. 7, 1974, to a 5-3 triumph Feb. 2, 1989, with a meager three ties in between

That triumph at long last arrived the night that the witch doctor visited the City of Brotherly Love.

"It came to an end thanks to Jimmy Krenn and Scotty Paulsen with the witch doctor," Lange said of that WDVE-FM stunt in a Spectrum lot. "I don't know how in the world they decided that was the game they were going to change it. It was like the witch doctor decided, 'This was the game.' It was hilarious."

Hex sakes, it worked. For a couple of months, anyway. In the 1989 Patrick Division finals, the Flyers rallied from a 3-2 deficit to win the series in Game 7 at the then-Civic Arena.

As Lange stressed, so much of this series has been determined by the sheer might of the Philadelphia franchise, one that advanced to the playoffs the past 11 seasons and, after a five-year spell a smidgen below .500, the 15 years before that. This has been a team of Cup-frequent Flyers, reaching the finals six times since 1975. This has been a model-of-consistency club that, when it wasn't clobbering the visiting Penguins by 7-1, 8-1, 9-2, 11-0 or 13-4 inside the Spectrum where it so dominated other clubs, it was beating them in Pittsburgh, too: an 0-9-1 Penguins streak overall was followed by an 0-3-1 stretch, which was followed by an 11-game losing skid that is still their deepest rut against any Original Six or '67 expansion team.

Announcer Mike "Doc" Emrick remembers the late Hart handing him a stat sheet as well, for his team lost there 11 years in a row as New Jersey Devils, Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Scouts. What a crack-up Hart was. What Broad Street Bullies they were: Detroit once was in a similar Spectrum headlock, too.

"It still is a very good rivalry between the two cities and the two teams," Lange said of Pitt-Philly. But what if 2006-07 somehow becomes the start of a decade and a half of Penguins dominance, fueled by Sidney Crosby and the chicklets he lost last year in Philadelphia? Lange laughed uproariously at that thought.

"If I live long enough, I will make up a sheet and give it to the Flyers."

Penguins Notebook: Rivalry takes twist as 16-point season vs. Flyers is possible
Sunday, March 04, 2007

By Dave Molinari and Shelly Anderson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Earning 16 points against one team during a season is some feat. Doing it against a division and intrastate rival is all the more impressive.

The Penguins have a chance to do that today when they play host to Philadelphia. Although the Flyers got a point with a shootout loss the previous time the teams played, the Penguins are 7-0 in the season series.

A sweep of the Flyers -- or anyone -- was not something many would have predicted entering the season.

"I guess I would say no, only because it's so hard to beat people consistently in this league," Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi said. "But, at the same time, it looks like we've had some luck against them, so, hopefully, it will continue."

Penguins winger Ryan Malone grew up in Western Pennsylvania and has a sense of the rivalry between the state's two NHL teams -- which, traditionally, has been dominated by the Flyers.

Philadelphia entered this season 125-64 with 30 ties and one overtime loss in the all-time series and with an 821-653 goals advantage.

This season, the Penguins hold a 38-18 scoring edge.

"It would definitely be a nice bonus," Malone said of a sweep. "It shows that, hopefully, times are changing."

Penguins and NHL leading scorer Sidney Crosby, 19, is too young and grew up too removed from the rivalry to have a first-hand understanding of the 39-year history between the two clubs.

But Crosby got drawn into it last season when he learned how heated the games can be -- and how physical.

"We know what to expect. It's an emotional game sometimes, but we've gotten some breaks, too," said Crosby, who has seven goals and 16 points plus a shootout-winning goal against the Flyers this season and 30 points in 15 career games against them.

"We have a lot of respect for them, but, at the same time, we know what it's going to take."

Dave Molinari on the Penguins: Trip down Nightmare Lane with those players you just loved to hate
A weekly look inside the team, the issues, the questions
Sunday, March 04, 2007

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
No team is more despised at Mellon Arena than Philadelphia, although fans who turn up there this afternoon are more likely to boo the Flyers' sweater than any individual wearing it. OK, except maybe Derian Hatcher.

After all, it has to be tough to work up a good hatred for a bunch of guys who haven't competed for anything more meaningful than their position in the draft lottery since late October.

And while Hatcher has been a better-than-average heel since breaking three of Sidney Crosby's teeth with a high stick last season, he's nowhere near claiming a spot on the all-time list of most-detested Penguins' opponents.

The competition for that distinction would be fierce and, if the contenders actually were battling for it head-to-head, quite nasty. They are:

Barclay and Bob Plager: The Penguins' first great rivalry, in the late 1970s and early '80s, was with St. Louis, and the Plager brothers were at the heart of it, along with Penguins such as Battlin' Al Smith, the goalie, and Bryan "Bugsy" Watson.

No game between the teams was complete without at least one major fight -- like a classic between Smith and Barclay Plager at center ice -- and fans shared the ill will between the clubs. Crowds here routinely serenaded Barclay Plager with a sing-song chant of "Bar-kleeee," and his presence was the only thing that prevented fans from directing most of their venom at Bob.

Bobby Clarke: He captained two Stanley Cup champions in Philadelphia, but is best remembered here for handling his stick like a scalpel.

That Clarke's swordsmanship was worthy of d'Artagnan was enough to infuriate fans, but what cemented his place among the ultimate villains here was his penchant for provoking a confrontation, then having teammates Dave Schultz and Bob Kelly deal with the fallout.

That he was talented, hard-working and a consistent winner only compounded the disdain he inspired.

Ron Hextall: Simply pulling on a Flyers sweater does wonders for a player's unpopularity in Pittsburgh, but Hextall would have incurred the fans' wrath even if he'd shown up in a monk's robe. He made no attempt to hide his emotions and, more importantly, was highly combative.

He was willing to trade punches with just about any opponent who crossed him, although his goalie stick -- which he wielded like a broadsword -- was Hextall's weapon of choice.

Hextall probably locked up his spot on this list when he tried to chase down Robbie Brown after Brown scored against him, although it's an indictment of Hextall's foot speed -- or testimony to the power of adrenaline -- that Brown was able to get away.

Eric Lindros: He got a good start when he began his career with the Flyers, and moving to New York didn't upgrade his status. Lindros never did all that much damage to the Penguins, aside from a pretty fair showing during the 1997 playoffs, but still receives serious abuse anytime he comes to town. And no one tires of reminding him about being knocked out by that epic Darius Kasparaitis shoulder-to-chin hit.

Preview - Box Score - Recap

By ALAN ROBINSON, AP Sports Writer
March 4, 2007

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- If the Pittsburgh Penguins make the playoffs for the first time in six years, no opponent will be more responsible than the Philadelphia Flyers.

Erik Christensen twice scored tying goals in regulation, then teamed with Sidney Crosby to win it in the shootout and the Penguins swept a season series from Philadelphia for the first time by winning 4-3 on Sunday.

Pittsburgh won all eight games against a once-dominating opponent. Coming into the season, the Flyers were 125-64 with 30 ties and one overtime loss in the last 40 years against their Pennsylvania rivals.

The Penguins nearly didn't win, falling behind 2-0 on goals by Mike York and Braydon Coburn in a sloppily played first period. But Gary Roberts, with the Penguins less than a week, scored once and set up their other two goals in regulation and Pittsburgh won for only the second time in five games after getting points in 16 consecutive games (14-0-2).

This is exactly why Pittsburgh traded with Phoenix to get the 40-year-old Roberts -- his ability to lead and to help win big games down the stretch in playoff races.

"Right now in the Eastern Conference, you can be third one week and eighth the next, so you've got to make sure you don't let any game slip away," Roberts said.

Crosby decided a shootout for the second time in four days, following up Christensen's successful shot against goalie Martin Biron by stickhandling the puck down the slot before going to his backhand to end it.

Both Flyers shooters, Martin Ruzicka and Scottie Upshall, failed against goalie Marc-Andre Fleury after Christensen began the shootout by beating Biron. The Penguins are 7-5 in shootouts and the Flyers are 1-6, last winning on Oct. 26.

Some fans tossed hats onto the ice after Christensen scored in the shootout, even though shootout goals don't count in individual totals.

"I knew it wasn't a hat trick but I will take it," said Christensen, who leads Pittsburgh with a 6-of-10 conversion rate in shootouts.

Crosby is 3-of-11 in shootouts, but also decided the Penguins' 4-3 victory against the Rangers on Thursday by scoring the only goal of the shootout.

"If you keep Crosby off the score sheet, you have a better chance of winning," the Flyers' Simon Gagne said. "It means defensively you're doing something right. But when you get into shootouts you don't know what's going to happen, and we're not very good in shootouts right now."

Crosby, the NHL's scoring leader with 98 points, was held without a point after getting 30 points in his first 15 career games against the Flyers. Crosby has two goals in his last 17 games overall.

Pittsburgh got back into the game the same way the Flyers took their 2-0 lead, by capitalizing on unnecessary penalties and controlling the puck in the opposing end for long stretches.

"The first half of the game looked like a nightmare," Penguins coach Michel Therrien said. "Nothing was going on, we were not moving the puck well, we took a lot of penalties, there was no rhythm to the game."

The Flyers might disagree, but they couldn't build on that 2-0 lead partly because they were 0-8 on the power play.

"If you get that third goal, you don't say you've closed it out but it makes it really tough to come back," Gagne said.

Instead, the Penguins cut it to 2-1 in the second period on Roberts' first goal in three games with Pittsburgh -- off a Sergei Gonchar rebound 3 seconds after a power play created by Geoff Sanderson's slashing penalty ended. The Penguins tied it late in the period on a power play, this time with Roberts setting up Christensen on a give and go.

The Flyers didn't score again until R.J. Umberger's tip-in from along the side of the net about 7 minutes into the third, his 16th goal and fourth in three games. Christensen tied it with about 5 minutes remaining on a hard wrist shot from the low slot off Michel Ouellet's excellent pass from behind the net, for his 12th goal.

Notes

The Penguins were 1-of-8 on the power play and are 2-for-24 in their last four games. ... The Flyers were outscored 38-17 in the season series. ... Pittsburgh played its third game within 72 hours following games Thursday at the Rangers and Friday at Carolina. The Penguins are playing a league-high 17 games in March. .. Biron made his second start since being traded by the Sabres. He beat Pittsburgh 4-2 with Buffalo on Nov. 17, even though Crosby scored twice.

Reports are leaking that the Eagles will have new alternate uniforms for the 2007 season, their 75th. The uniforms will be a throwback to the 1933 jerseys and helmets (jerseys will be short sleeves instead of long sleeves, obviously). It will be cool to see the Birds in powder blue and yellow:

I'd like to see the kelly green uniforms. Jeffrey Lurie won't use those uniforms as alternates because Lurie says that kelly green is a "has-been green" and was not a color you could wear on a daily basis.

Another interesting alternate uniform would be to go with the old green wing on white helmet that was used in the early 70's.

As I had stated back in early March, the Eagles were going to have throwback 1933 uniforms for a game this year. They were unveiled to the public today.

Eagles Unveil 75th Anniversary Plans

The Philadelphia Eagles unveiled plans Wednesday to celebrate 75 seasons of Eagles football in Philadelphia, including a designated throwback game complete with the uniform colors of 1933.

"We will celebrate 75 years of Eagles football and the most passionate fans in the NFL during the 2007 season," Eagles chairman/CEO Jeffrey Lurie said at a press conference held at the NovaCare Complex.

Joining Lurie was Eagles play-by-play radio announcer Merrill Reese, considered to be the official "Voice of the Eagles." Reese, whose voice has marked some of the biggest moments in franchise history over the past 30 years, shared his favorite memories of the team. In addition, those in attendance were treated to a special highlight video of great Eagles moments, produced by Eagles Television Network.

"Knowing how much the Eagles have meant to the City of Philadelphia, I am truly honored to be part of the rich history of this team," said Lurie.

Also on hand at the announcement were Pro Football Hall of Fame member and NFL Films senior producer Ray Didinger, author of The Eagles Encyclopedia, and retired Eagles executive Jim Gallagher, who served in the organization from 1946 to 1995.

Here is a look at the plans for the 75th Anniversary Season:

Throwback Game -- Kicker David Akers and defensive end Jevon Kearse modeled blue and yellow throwback uniforms at the press conference, commemorating the color scheme and design worn by the Eagles during their first season in the NFL in 1933. Designed in cooperation with the NFL and Reebok, the uniforms will be worn during the September 23 home game vs. the Detroit Lions.

The blue and yellow colors were the first colors worn by the Eagles, after the Frankford Yellow Jackets went bankrupt and the NFL awarded the Philadelphia franchise to a syndicate headed by former University of Pennsylvania teammates Lud Wray and Bert Bell for an entry fee of $2,500. The Swedes were in Philadelphia before the arrival of William Penn and he incorporated their colors into the City of Philadelphia's flag.

Official 75th Anniversary Merchandise -- Hats, jerseys -- including ones featuring current players like Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook -- and more additional merchandise in the throwback colors are available now for fans.

Virtual Museum -- Wednesday also marked the launch of PhiladelphiaEagles.com's Virtual Museum (http://museum.philadelphiaeagles.com/). The web museum pays homage to the colorful history of the Eagles organization with exclusive, media-rich content dating back to the start of the franchise.

75th Anniversary Team -- Who were the best football players to wear an Eagles uniform during the franchise's first 74 seasons? Fans can help settle the debate by voting for the 75th Anniversary Team in our Virtual Museum. Each week, fans are invited to vote for the best players at a different position. The team will be unveiled before the beginning of the season in September. The nominees for the 75th Anniversary Team were selected by Reese, who will enter his 31st season as the voice of the Eagles, and Didinger, a former Philadelphia sportswriter who covered the Eagles and the NFL for 26 seasons before joining NFL Films as a senior producer.

Official Philadelphia Eagles 75th Season Logo -- Players will wear this special logo, which was designed in cooperation with the NFL, on the current midnight green and white jerseys throughout the season. The logo will also be featured prominently throughout 2007 marketing, advertising, merchandising and game presentation campaigns.

Television Special -- Philadelphia's 6abc will air a television special featuring some of the greatest moments in Eagles history and members of the 75th Anniversary Team.

I kind of like the Eagles decision to nip in the bud any QB needs for the future, unless Kolb flops of course. McNabb has been battling injuries for the past couple of seasons, and isn't getting any younger. IMO, sooner rather than later. He still has at least a couple good years left in the tank, maybe more. In the meantime the kid can learn the offense, plus fill in when necessary. I've also heard good things about a couple of the other picks, name Bradley and Hunt.

Eagles @ Patriots 28-31

First team to be beaten by the Patriots by only a margin of three.... I regard this as a success... :D

Great effort but the team is still 5-6. If the players start acting like it was a "victory" then they'll be 5-7 in a few days. The season is 70% over and the Eagles aren't in any better shape than the Arizona Cardinals right now---even with the exciting game.

This team faces rebuilding.

Even though I started this thread, I'm going to close it since we have the "Northeast Sports Discussion" thread to cover Philadelphia and all other Northeast US sports.
