Hutchison to launch I-mode in Macau

Hutchison Whampoa Ltd.'s Hutchison Telecom Hong Kong and Japan's NTT DoCoMo Inc. signed an agreement late last week that will roll out NTT's I-mode wireless Internet service in Hong Kong and Macau, the two companies said.

I-mode is a wireless Internet service developed by NTT DoCoMo. The service is centered around a main portal that provides quick access to approved sites and also includes a billing element that allows users to charge content to their mobile phone bills.

The agreement calls for NTT DoCoMo to provide technical and marketing support to Hutchison for the launch, a time frame for which was not given. The deal stands to make Hutchison the 16th I-mode operator worldwide.

The two carriers have also agreed to consider the adoption of NTT DoCoMo's wallet phone technology on Hutchison I-mode handsets.

The wallet phone system is based on Sony Corp.'s Felica smart card technology. It allows people to use their phones for such functions as rail passes or electronic money wallets in stores with compatible terminals. Hong Kong's Octopus Holdings Ltd.'s Octopus transportation card system is based on the same Felica platform, so the territory already has suitable infrastructure in place.

I-mode was first launched by NTT DoCoMo in Japan in February 2000 and is currently offered by 13 partner carriers in: Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Taiwan, Greece, Israel, Russia, the U.K., Ireland and Singapore. Smart Communications Inc. in the Philippines is preparing to launch the service.

I guess CTM has to think serious to respond to Hutchison attacks. I don't see the new CTM CEO a man that can boost CTM against Hutchison Telecom Hk. Macau official telecom deserves a better leader and a better telecom as well.
