Beirut: The Mediterranean is threatened by its worst ever environmental disaster after Israel’s bombing of a power plant in Lebanon sent thousands of tonnes of fuel gushing into the sea, the Lebanese environment minister charged.

“Up till now 10,000-15,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil have spilled out into the sea,” said Lebanese Environment Minister Yacub Sarraf on Saturday. He added, “It's without a doubt the biggest environmental catastrophe that the Mediterranean has known.”

Israeli forces bombed the tanks at the power station on July 14 and July 15. The leak from one of the tanks, which are located just 25 metres from the sea, has now stopped but another containing 25,000 tonnes of fuel oil is still on fire and in danger of exploding. Between 8,000-10,000 tonnes of fuel are on the shore and 5,000 on the open water.

The spill is now affecting 70 kilometres of Lebanon's 220-kilometre-long coast. Beaches and rocks are covered in a black sludge which has reached the famous tourist town of Byblos.

Sarraf warned that, “If nothing is done, not only will one third of Lebanon's coastline be hit, but also Cyprus, Syria, Turkey, Greece and even Israel. The Mediterranean ecosystem risks suffering badly and certain species are threatened with extinction.”

He added that owing to the Israeli blockade of Lebanon's waters, it was impossible to send ships to clear up the pollution. “I have appealed to Britain, Italy, Spain, the United States, and all countries which have already suffered oil slicks to ask for technical assistance as we cannot act on our own,” he said.

Grave concern is being expressed over an environmental crisis unfolding off the Lebanese coast, where thousands of tonnes of fuel has spilled into the sea after Israeli aircraft bombed a power plant.

The United Nations Environmental Programme says the oil slick, caused by the destruction of the Jiyyeh power utility 30km south of Beirut, is now affecting up to 80km of the Lebanese coastline and threatening that of Syria, too.

Israeli forces bombed the tanks at the power station on July 14 and July 15, a few days into their offensive on Lebanon.

Lebanese Environment Minister Yacub Sarraf says between 10,000 and 15,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil have spilled out into the sea, covering once golden beaches and rocks with black sludge.

He says it is the biggest environmental catastrophe that the Mediterranean has known.

Israel does not even care for the environment within its borders. I live in Haifa, and I know people who left this city not because of Hizbollah’s rockets, but because of the pollution here.

Well Idiot or no Idiot, this oil spill is not known throughout the world. This is very deadly for the environnemental (im very pro-env.) and it is endangering water species not only in Lebanon, but Syria, Turkey, Cyrpus, even Israel and as far as Greece. We need to clear the beaches as soon as possible

I am beginning to think this whole war was very well calculated and planned long before the kidnapping. The soldiers were used to bait Hizballah and give Israel the excuse they were waiting for to destroy Lebanon. They knew the oil spill would move north and not affect them. They are so jealous of Lebanon's beauty they needed to destroy it in every way possible.

I think its because Israel got wiped the floor with by HA in 2000 that they were doing this...Same thing happened a couple of days ago when the best of the best in the Israeli army got the same outcome and thats why we see the malicious attacks today at the hospital and Qana...So they feel warm and fuzzy inside just in case the cease fire is finally implemented.
