View Full Version : Hotter than Balls: A potentially deadly heatwave is about to hit much of the nation
Fiddlerontheruf July 31st, 2006, 02:01 AM The situation could become very dire in part of the east and midwest will suffer a record-breaking heatwave is set to strike those parts of the country. New York, Philadelphia and Washington could all be over 100 on Tuesday and Wednesday with head indicies approaching 115 and above in some areas. This could be tragic event. Chicago, Saint Louis, Minneapolis, Detroit, Omaha, Milwaukee and other midwestern cities will face similar conditions.
With more than 100 people in the LA area dying last week of heat-related causes and the history of less impressive heat waves killing many in these cities, this should be something to be very cautious of.
A non-sequitur that will probably get this thread locked: could this incredibly hot summer be a result of global warming, and will this be commonplace for every summer?
The anti-cheesehead July 31st, 2006, 03:01 AM A heatwave is about to hit? It started on Friday in Minneapolis.
Steely Dan July 31st, 2006, 03:12 AM i'll be curious to see how the nation's power grid holds up. with hundreds of millions of people experiencing so much extereme heat at the same time, the strain on power generation will be tremendous (probably record setting). if power generation can't keep up with demand, resulting in power outages, death tolls could be very high. let's hope for the best.
TroyBoy July 31st, 2006, 03:30 AM Its not global warming its middle eastern countrys,
make it hotter=more air condioning=more power=more oil consumption.
Absolut355 July 31st, 2006, 03:35 AM It's just going to be hot with a chance of really hot for the next few weeks probably.
gaviidae July 31st, 2006, 03:44 AM could this incredibly hot summer be a result of global warming, and will this be commonplace for every summer?
Heat waves? In the middle of summer? What is the world coming to?!
It hit 100ºF here in Minneapolis today, but believe it or not, it's not a record high. There have been many, many years where summers have been much hotter and much drier.
Did anyone blame the Dust Bowl on global warming? It was in the 110's on days in several summers of the 30's, and hasn't been that hot here since then.

No, and yes.
godblessbotox July 31st, 2006, 04:19 AM thats why you live on the coast!
Chicagoago July 31st, 2006, 04:21 AM It's not like this is ANYTHING new. Heatwaves like this hit every 5 or 6 years across the country. Anyone remember 1988 and 1989?? Those summers were HOT and VERY VERY dry. 5 years later we had the floods of 93....two years later 700 people died in Chicago from a heatwave. If you look back over the past few hundreds of years there's a cycle the weather goes through. I'm not saying global warming is a farse (I certainly think it's real), but I hope this doesn't turn into a pissing match of everyone around the world screaming about global warming every single time it gets really hot out. Yes we need to keep things in check, but our planet goes through extremes constantly.
nath05 July 31st, 2006, 04:29 AM Hot as balls this weekend in the Twin Cities.
I live in an apt. without A/C and it's murder.
But thankfully it's only about three days that're really bad and we'll be back in the eighties or even the seventies for awhile.
And in the Star Tribune on Saturday they said that we're only 85 days away from the average first snowfall. Ouch.
Suburbanite July 31st, 2006, 06:39 AM thats why you live on the coast!
The NWS has heat advisories in New England and much of the mid-
Atlantic region also.
Bond James Bond July 31st, 2006, 06:49 AM Here's Seattle's forecast (http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/98101?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared) for the next few days. :)

Tuesday: 71 degrees, partly cloudy
Wednesday: 69 degrees, mostly sunny
Thursday: 71 degrees, sunny
Enjoy your heat wave. :)
Suburbanite July 31st, 2006, 06:59 AM ^^What happened to the Seattle Rain Festival? :jk:

We decided to take a break just to make you guys jealous. :D
Actually we got some showers today.
NaptownBoy July 31st, 2006, 11:53 PM Well, thankfully it never gets that hot here in Indianapolis because we're a little higher up. We're at nearly a thousand feet above sea level :)
Besides, 95 isn't really that hot...especially after living through three Mississippi summers where it was 95 every fucking day
kcmetro August 1st, 2006, 12:12 AM I heard on the news a couple weeks ago that so far 2006 is the hottest year on record when you take into account average temps around the entire globe. It may be hotter or cooler in specific locations, but from what I've heard, overall it's hotter. As for us in KS, we're used to this stuff too. 100 degree days and weeks are expected each summer. Naptown mentioned elevation, but we're about 900 ft. up here in KC, so I think it has more to do with air flow patterns. I know that when the chinook winds come down the Rockies they'll heat up the air on the high plains. That's why western and central KS are oftentimes about 5 degrees hotter than eastern KS. I've always been curious about ND and SD since they seem to get extremely hot, even hotter than parts of KS. I saw that Pierre was at 115 degrees one day last week. One of the crappy things about TX, OK, and KS is that we have the Gulf moisture coming up this way which makes it feel even hotter.
Indyman August 1st, 2006, 03:06 AM I was the hottest I have ever been in my life today. It was about 95 in my city and my school started tennis conditioning...ahh. I seriously was afraid I was going to have a heat stroke!
Sean in New Orleans August 1st, 2006, 04:41 AM Looks like a cool front is going to give the Upper Midwest a needed break. We'll get our front that will cool us off around the first week of October, in New Orleans. My air conditioning stays on non-stop from mid April through the first week of October every year, with not one break!!! :D
Xusein August 1st, 2006, 04:44 AM At least, like said above, you guys have one day of heat...
The Northeast will be seeing blistering heat until Friday...and the 103F day in Wednesday here...
The anti-cheesehead August 1st, 2006, 05:02 AM At least, like said above, you guys have one day of heat.
We've had a lot more than one day of heat. We've had 9 days in a row of 90 or above. 17 days of 90 or above in July. It was 98 on Friday, 96 on Saturday, 99 on Sunday, 100 today, it's 93 right now, at 10:00 at night.

I mean you guys have one day of heat left...should have specified.
I'm aware of the heat Minneapolis is getting...my cousins are like "WTF?!"
choyak August 1st, 2006, 05:32 AM Well. I was in Denver yesterday and it was 105° there! The humidity was low so it was not all that bad. When I returned to California today from my 'vacation' it was EIGHTY ONE DEGREES here in OC!!!! I am lovin' it after living in Colorado with the 90s and I also was in Wisconsin with the 90s and the high humidity!!!
Sean in New Orleans August 1st, 2006, 06:19 AM Humidity is what makes it so stifling and the Midwest has had humidity with this hot spell. I can identify with what they are feeling...I'm going to the Midwest (Illinois) this Saturday for about 6 days...I hope it is somewhat cooler. Sometimes you have to laugh when you read the weather at 1 or 2AM and it's 85F outside with a heat index of 102F...but, you do get used to it...Kinda like I get used to -30F after a day or two when I go skiing in Crested Butte, CO, every year, (one of the coldest locations in N. America during the Winter the entire Winter Season).
kcmetro August 1st, 2006, 07:58 AM Yeah that humidity is a bitch. Speaking of being hot at night......I remember back in '99 when I flew back to KCI from LaGuardia in NYC. In NYC everyone was bitching about 90 degree weather during the day. When we landed in KC at 3am the pilot came on and said, "Welcome to KC, the current temp. is 95 degrees". It was down from about 105 during the day. I try to imagine that every night in some place like Phoenix. I imagine you could get used to it, but I don't think it's the type of thing I'd want to get used to. I'll take the 2 or 3 weeks of 100+ temps in KC anyday over the 3 months of 100+ in the SW.

Is it normal for KC to get 2-3 weeks of 100+?
nic158 August 1st, 2006, 02:09 PM ^^ Yeah i was going to ask too, that's sounds crazy to hear that. I couldn't handle that, Milwaukee hasn't had a 100 degree day since the mid-90s. It was close yesterday.
kcmetro August 1st, 2006, 03:21 PM Is it normal for KC to get 2-3 weeks of 100+?
Yeah, not all at once, but dispersed throughout the summer. We may get 3 or 4 days at a time or even a week straight, just depends. Back in 1980 we had like 2 straight weeks of 100+ temps and a lot of people died in the KC area. My freshman year of college in the fall of 2000 we had around a week and a half straight of 100+ temps.

Indianapolis has not hit 100 in nearly 20 years, since 1988. I wasn't old enough to remember it though :)
Booyashako August 1st, 2006, 11:36 PM ...we feel it up here in TO too...was a lovely day for an outdoor swim ;)
Jaybird August 1st, 2006, 11:52 PM It was bad in the Stratford/London area today for heatwave, I actually biked and walked in this weather today, a thermometer I read said 42 degrees celsius, and this was just under the shade. It was probably even hotter in Windsor and Detroit.
I shutter to think what the people of St. Louis are going through right now, if this heat wave hit that particular city. They're suffering already with other problems, as most of us know, unfortunately.

What is 42 C in degrees F? I don't know how to translate that stuff.

42C is a bit above 107F.
i_am_hydrogen August 2nd, 2006, 08:34 AM It's been beyond oppressive in Chicago this July. This is the second excessive heat warning this month. Tomorrow will cap off a six day string of 90s with three days of heat indices between 105-115F. This is the first summer in many years where I haven't had a/c. Quite frankly, it sucks. I take a lot of cold showers and keep a fan at all times no more than two feet from my face. Only one more day though, and then it's supposed to break. Good thing, too, because I'm about to break.
CheeseheadGirl August 2nd, 2006, 09:45 AM It was 99F here in Milwaukee. I think the heat index was about 110F. And I don't have AC...argh!! :(

Ah, good ole 1980! My sister was born in July of 1980 in KC, and my parents still talk about how freaking hot it was...notorious in my mind.
And yes, I was moving into my dorm room in 2000 and remember it was hot as hell...good call kcmetro!

Holy shit! My sister was born on July 4th of 1980, but in Topeka.
Absolut355 August 3rd, 2006, 02:10 AM She was born July 7th, 1980 in KC. My family seriously still talks about how hot it was when she was born.
And completely off the subject real quick, my parents bought some furniture in KC that year, and brought it to STL with them when they moved in '82. I brought it BACK to KC when I went to college there, and it finally died in its hometown...you may have seen pieces of it sitting by the apartments at 4545 Main Street in June of 2004 LOL!! Someone snapped up the rocking chair real quick though, we just put a "Free" sign on it and it was gone in 30 mins.
jcraw80 September 9th, 2006, 09:16 AM LOL just found this one. Bet someone feels like a dumbass.
NaptownBoy September 9th, 2006, 07:03 PM This summer in Indianapolis was much cooler than normal. It only got as hot as 93. But the meteorologists are saying that this is going to be a brutal winter!

So does the Farmer's Almanac, although they only have a 50% accuracy rating.
Æsahættr September 10th, 2006, 06:43 AM we have a power outage in my neighborhood
