Frog July 31st, 2006, 04:44 PM macau airport looks the most interesting
China_winson August 2nd, 2006, 06:52 PM Exactly, there are Five International Airports...
FM 2258 August 3rd, 2006, 10:46 AM I love Guangzhou's airport. I'll be sure to fly there someday.
samsonyuen August 3rd, 2006, 09:10 PM Where do airlines in Zhuhai fly to that are international?
Mr. Fusion August 3rd, 2006, 09:22 PM Guangzhou Baiyun is already undergoing a massive expansion project, and Shenzen is replacing its passenger facilities with a midfield terminal and second runway, similar to Baiyun's and CLK's layout.
Any construction photos?
z0rg August 3rd, 2006, 09:32 PM I didn't know that Zhuhai Airport had international flights too... What about Dongguan? Does it have a big airport?
hkskyline August 3rd, 2006, 09:38 PM Zhuhai Airport will be managed by HKIA :http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=9499693&postcount=448
It has been severely underused and prompted calls to curb airport growth in the region. There is simply too much capacity for such a small area, and Zhuhai doens't have the population or business to sustain their international airport.
matherto August 3rd, 2006, 11:40 PM I'm gonna have to fly to these one day, maybe if I ever get to Hong Kong, i'll take a few flights around these, they look like great airports
hkskyline August 4th, 2006, 02:45 PM Air Macau actually flies between Macau and Shenzhen. The flight time across the river is about 40 minutes.
Jiangwho August 4th, 2006, 04:31 PM I didn't know that Zhuhai Airport had international flights too... What about Dongguan? Does it have a big airport?
Dongguan doesnot have a airport yet. shenzhen International airport is pretty close to dongguan.
samsonyuen August 4th, 2006, 10:02 PM It takes forty minutes from Macau to Shenzhen? That's really long!
deej August 5th, 2006, 12:01 AM It takes forty minutes from Macau to Shenzhen? That's really long!
Likely ATC or flight path issues. As the crow flies, I don't think it would take more than 30 mins. I remember flying from the old GZ airport to the old Kai Tak airport, and it was only a 30 min flight. Taxiing probably takes longer than the flight, LOL.
IMO, it's going to be an interesting competition between GZ airport and HKG. I seem to recall Fedex is setting up their hub at Baiyun. And the air terminal, when fully built out will be able to handle something like 80m passengers annually.
I was pretty disappointed when I flew into Baiyun tho. They have a ways to go to catch up to HKG in terms of organization, retail strategy and overall efficiency.
oz.fil August 5th, 2006, 03:58 AM baiyun looks so cool! i never knew the airport was so... wow =O!
JustHorace August 5th, 2006, 05:24 PM HKIA is undoubtedly the most beautiful airport. BaiyunPort is almost as spectacular. However, HKIA is way, way ahead in terms of service. Last October, we were stalled at Baiyun for several hours because of our visa, only to find out that it was the immigration officer's fault.
zergcerebrates August 6th, 2006, 07:39 AM Zhuhai's airport is barely operational due to underuse, and I doubt theres any international flights going in there mostly domestics. Only 2 out of the 5 airports listed above are major ones, HKIA and GZ.
hkskyline August 6th, 2006, 08:42 AM Macau is a major transit airport for Taiwanese passengers while Shenzhen tried to lure Hong Kong travelers going to the mainland with cheaper flights, but even that hasn't taken off too much due to excessive travel time to get to Shenzhen's airport.
samsonyuen August 6th, 2006, 11:08 AM That's interesting. How many Taiwanese passengers fly into PRC each year? Do they use Macau more than HKG?
hkskyline August 6th, 2006, 04:19 PM That's interesting. How many Taiwanese passengers fly into PRC each year? Do they use Macau more than HKG?
There is a timing difference between the two sets of data. However, it gives a good idea how the two stack up.
Macau
http://www.mac.gov.tw/english/english/macpolicy/macao05.pdf
According to the Immigration Office of the National Police Agency under the Ministry of Inmterior, the number of Taiwanese visitors to Macau from Jan - Nov 2004 exceeded 915,000. In addition, over 60% of passengers at Macau International Airport traveled via Taiwan-Macao related routes. In 2003, more than 490,000 entered Macau International Airport, accounting for 76.6% of all incoming passengers. From Jan - Oct 2004, the number of passengers entering Macau International Airport was 500,685, accounting for 73.57% of all incoming passengers.
Hong Kong
http://www.tdctrade.com/econforum/sc/sc001004.htm
In 1999, about 920,000 Taiwanese visitors who visited Hong Kong also went into China.
http://partnernet.hktourismboard.com/pnweb/jsp/doc/listDoc.jsp?doc_id=86084
Visitor numbers from Taiwan grew by 2.7% to 2,130,565 in 2005, with an increase in leisure traffic not only offsetting the decline in same-day in-town business arrivals who continue to take advantage of direct ferry services from SkyPier to Pearl River Delta destinations, but also resulting in 2.7% growth of overnight visitors from the island.

Nice one.
I've flown to three of these airports (HKG, CAN, MFM) and I like HKG the most by far. Baiyun is a pretty nice airport as well!
I'll probably use SZX this autumn as well when flying from PVG to Hong Kong, since the flights are usually much cheaper to SZX than to HK. The KCR ride from Shenzhen to HK is really a breeze.
Nivek August 12th, 2006, 11:06 AM I've been to Macau and Hong Kong Int airports
Landing in macau is like landing in the ocean since the runway is a strip of reclaimed land.
Go macau!
samsonyuen August 12th, 2006, 11:21 PM ^Wow, the new Shenzhen airport looks like it's going to be huge!
