The official Moroccan name for Casablanca is "Dar el Bida" which also means the white house. The first foreign name used was CasaBranca, which was Portuguese. "Casa" is the name widely used amongst Moroccans.

Casablanca was called Anfa by its first inhabitants (Berbers) and was independant from Morocco
In the Middle Ages it became home to many pirates who obliged Portuguese to destroy all the city except one house that they called Casa Branca
In arabic we call it Dar El Beida
But Moroccans call it just "Casa"

Good looking city. I like it's architecture and to add many of it's structures are white-brick, which keeps the "Casablanca" label authentic.

So it's a fact, many Moroccans call it "Casablanca" rather than "Dar Beïda" ?

When I surf the internet I see they start more new projects in Tanger then in Casablanca.And as a inhabitant of Casablanca(not really because I live in Europe) I want Casa to remain the primate city:D
Since a long time I didn't notice any big projects that wil boost Casa to become an internationally well-celebrated,well-respected city like for example cities as Istanbul,Paris,London,Rio de Janeiro,etc

I really think that Tangier will pass Casa in the future.
Another example They haven't finished Tanger-Mediterrannee yet and they planned already a new harbour for Tangier.
I don't see that happen (such big projects) in Casa anymore

I can see why people believe that Tanger might surpass Casablanca as the industrial city of the country. Perhaps it would be the head of Moroccan exports. But Casablanca already has strong and heavy industry that primarily supplies the local market.
I therefore think that there will be a specialization in activites, with Casa being the industrial site supplying local market vs. Tanger the export site. This is primarily due to the already incurred fixed costs and investments as well as Casa's location which is closer to the center of Morocco.
Of course this layout would make Tanger more promising since the foreign markets are much larger than the Moroccan one.

In terms of construction, sales of ciment in Casablanca region still surpass those of Tanger, although Tanger is growing much faster and catching up.

Here are the figure of 2006 sales and variation between 2005 and 2006:

Casablanca Region : 1.64million tonnes with a variation of 1.4%
Tanger region: 1.49million with variation of +22%
Marrakech region: 1.27million with variation of 9%

As a result it is clear that the level of construction is similar between Tanger and Casablanca, and there is a high likelihood that Tanger will surpass Casablanca.

what I am noticing too about casablanca ( I do not live there but I read olot)
the southwestern suburbs of sidi maarouf california bouskoura and nouacceur are growing and doing very well , olot of multinational companies moving in that part of town
the downside of that is in downtown casablanca , ain sebaa, sidi bernoussi companies are leaving and closing down to move to places like sidi maarouf and nouacceur
am I right ? what do U think ?

Well it's right that there are a lot of projects in Tangier like the Med Port ( which is closer to Sebta and Tetouan than Tangier) and the TC Center but in Casablanca we already have good infrastructures like the airport and many projects will be launched very soon like the "Centre 2000" Towers
Casablanca is also the superior city of the two due to its sheer multiplicity of diverse moroccan cultures all found in one city. It has also the biggest number of productive youth leaders and managers, the biggest numbers of manufactures ( most of them certied ISO), It has the biggest airport and 3 harbours ( Jorf Lasfar, Mohammedia and Casa Port)
So I don't think that Tangier will surpass Casablanca, just like Marseille couldn't surpass Paris even if it has a harbour

I agree with you. Tanger was once the number one city in Morocco and loved by the jetset, moviestars etc. But Tanger was years neclegted.

Tanger has a good location, good beaches and it has no big slums like Casablanca. Most people in Tanger have it good and got the money to invest in de city. A lot of the real estate projects are build by Moroccans from North Morocco and people who live in Europe. That is good for the city and can give the city and region a big economic boom.

Thanks Redalinho for your previous contribution about places to visit in Casablanca. Now, my friends are thinking of spending 9-10days in Morocco. I am deciding whether I can join them or not. But basically, I suggested that they spend their time in the following way:

2days in Casablanca,
3 days in Marrakech (since theres a place to stay there)
1 day in Essaouira, then back to Marrakech.
Next day will be going to Ouarzazate to see the filming studios...
Then before last day in Agadir.
Return to Casablanca and fly from there.

Given the short period of time, and their first visit to Morocco... I preferred concentrating on Marrakech which is the touristical and upscale capital of the country. As a result, it gave me only little choice for the other destinations. A trip to Fes from Marrakech would take too long...

An alternative plan was: Casablanca (2days), Fes (1), Marrakech (3), Essaouira (1), Ouarzazate(1), then (1) return to Casablanca to fly out.
Please let me know what you think would be a better plan.

If an extra day was possible, would you think that Agadir is worth the visit, especially knowing that it would be traveling from Ouarzazate to Agadir.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Well Agadir is not very interesting, except if they come from a cold country like Russia or Sweden...

If I were him in 10 days I would visit the 4 imperial moroccan cities plus the valley of the South East

- 3 in Fes + Meknes
- 1 in Rabat
- 2 in Casablanca + El Jadida
- 4 in Marrakesh + Essaouira

or

To do the tour you suggested, it is possible to travel from one city to another by train, right? (Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Ouarzazate, Marrakech). Does it take very long to reach Marrakech and Fez from Casablanca/Rabat by train?

Unfortunatly there is no train between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, you'll have to take a bus if you want to go there.

when I search for immobiler ( real estate properties for sale ) marrakech is always getting the most properites. so many new devellopments , new houses , new condos and so on, agadir and tanger too has so many new devellopment but casablanca ??? almost nothing ??? WHY !!?? je ne comprend pas ca. it makes no sense casablanca is the locomotive of morocco and yet it has very little real estate to offer no new develloplents or very little of it. WHY is that happening ?

I believe that the main reason is that Casablanca structurally lacks land that can be used for those projects. It is much harder to find land (the administration only recently showed the projected future urbanization of the city). And because of this lack of transparency, the prices of land are much higher than any city in Morocco.
So the lack of land and cost is main reason not that many projects are launched in Morocco

There are a lot of bad neighbourhood in Casa. They can buy the land very cheap and build there projects. I don't believe that every land in Casa is expensive.

I agree with you Casablanca deserves more. Casablanca is world famous. Everybody in the world knows Casablanca and they love the city. Casablanca can become a Florida. A lot of people want to buy property in Casa but there is not so much..

Don't forget that Tanger property in the city is build for more then 80% bij private investors from North Morocco and Moroccan who live abroad. And Casa does not have that..

I thought living in Marrakech was the most expensive? I know a lot of people who went to Marrakech and said that the prices for food, rent etc where very high..

If a city becomes expensive that is not good for the economy. Foreign companies en people will not come there.

I hear that casablanca will have more than 30000 hectares open to urbanization by the year 2030 and possilbe 60000 heactares by the year 2050
