Le crépuscule s'empare doucement de Cassablanca. En dessous des remparts de l'ancienne médina, le port grouille de navires en partance vers de lointains horizons. Du côté de la terre, la cité n'en finit pas de déployer ses toits à perte de vue. De jour comme de nuit, elle est constamment en mouvement, à l'affût d'une nouvelle, d'une tendance, d'une mode à lancer. "C'est la New York du Maghreb!", dit-on ici.
Quatrième ville d'Afrique et première du Maghreb, Casablanca compte aujourd'hui près de 5 millions d'habitants. Depuis sanaissance, elle n'a jamais cessé de grandir et de se bâtir au gré de ses gouvernants. Chacun d'eux a voulu en faire la plus belle et la plus riche des cités. A l'origine, elle s'appelait Anfa (Colline). Les Berbères Berghouata qui la fondèrent au VIIe siècle en firent la capitale de leur royaume et un port florissant avant que les Portugais ne la détruisent en 1468. Trois siècles plus tard, le sultan Mohammed Ben Abdallah entreprend sa reconstruction. La ville s'orne alors de splendides mosquées et zaouïas (sanctuaires). Elle prend le nom de Dar-el-Beïda (Maison Blanche), que les négociants espagnols traduisent par Casa Blanca. Au milieu du XIXe siècle, la cité proclamée comptoir européen voit sa baie envahie de vapeurs français et anglais chargeant la laine et les céréales de l'arrière-pays. Mais en 1900, elle est encore qu'une paisible bourgade de 20 000 habitants.
Tout bascule lorsqu'en 1912 le Maroc est placé sous protectorat français. Layautey, premier résident général, décide de faire de Casablanca la capitale économique du pays et lance l'aménagement d'un port moderne. trois ans plus tard, il charge l'architecte Henri Prost de dresser un plan d'urbanisme. Objectif: donner à Dar el-Beïda la physioomie d'une métropole à l'européenne pouvant rivaliser avec Chicago. Dès lors, Casablanca se transforme en un véritable laboratoire d'architecture moderne. Au sud de la médina, une ville nouvelle sort de terre, ordonnée autour de deux centres névralgiques. La place Lyautey (aujourd'hui nommée place Mohammed V) regroupe les bâtiments administratifs de style néo-mauresque, tels la grande poste, le palais de justice et la préfecture. La place de France (actuelle place des Nations-Unies) rassemble, elle, les édifices commerciaux aux façades blanches ornées d'arcatures. Ces chantiers joints à l'exode rural provoquent une croissance anarchique de la ville qui en 1921, compte 97 000 habitants dont 62 000 Marocains. Pour accueillir ces derniers, les urbanistes français érigent une nouvelle médina dans le quartier des Habous ( quartier des Saionts-Hommes). D'inspiration hispano-mauresque, ses logements égrènent sur leurs murs la pierre, le bois et le marbre le long de ruelle et de placettes bordée d'arcades. Avec ses souks, ses boutiques et sa mosquée, l'ensemble constitue une adaptation réussie du confort et des techniques modernes aux fonctions tradionnelles d'une médina.
Dans les années 1930, la flambée de l'immobilier entraîne une nouvelle mutation urbaine. Le centre-ville se couvre d'immeubles d'habitation associant le répertoire architectural marocain à un matériau révolutionnaire, le béton. Sur les façades, coupoles, belvédères et mosaïques voisinent ainsi avec des éléments décoratifs néo-renaissance, art nouveau ou art déco. Malgré tout, la cité poursuit son expansion chaotique. Si bien que l'architecte Michel ecochard se voit confier, au lendemain de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, un plan d'aménagement du Grand Casablanca. Inspiré par le courant progressiste de l'urbanisme, il prône le développement d'un habitat social. A sa suite, de nombreux architectes français, dont des émules de Le Corbustier, dotent la ville de bâtiments monumentaux de style international. Parallèlement, des quartiers résidentiels voient le jour, composés de villas aux lignes épurées où s'installe la bourgeoisie marocaine naissante.
Aujourd'hui, Casablanca demeure un champ d'expérimentation pour les bâtisseurs. Les architectes, les plus créatifs du pays ont édifié au centre-ville des gratte-ciel comme ceux du Twin Center du quartier Maarif et une clinquante technopole dans celui de Sidi Maarouf. Ces virtuoses de l'acier et du béton vivent et travaillent à Casablanca comme ils n'oublient pas pour autant l'héritage arabo-musulman et s'attachent à doter leur ville d'un cachet architectural particulier. Dans les beaux quartiers d'Anfa ou de Californie - depuis "Casablanca" d'Humphrey Bogart, le rêve n'a plus jamais lâché la ville - des résidences privées marient ainsi, dans un nouvel art de vivre, les formes futuristes et les matériaux traditionnels: ferroneries, zelliges, bejmates ( carrelage en terre cuite). Une tendance qui participe au renouveau des savoir-faire ancestraux. Si bien que des artisans à l'ancienne sont formés pour décorer les bâtiments contemporains ou restaurer le patrimoine historique de la ville.

I did have a proposition to work in Marrocos an I find it interesting for me. But, like I am Portuguese I am use to eat Portuguese food and drink wine at mils. It is possible to do it normally in Marrocos?
