It's Starting this week with a 41 story office tower.
Thanks to 3Dementia for the last pic.
Skybean August 1st, 2006, 02:54 AM Very nice LordMandeep.
I am hopeful that we will see groundbreaking (parking lot breaking?) tomorrow, but perhaps only preparatory work. In any case, this tower is well designed. The quality is certainly there and it will spell the end for yet another parking lot -- in a very visible location I might add.
Hopefully this will just be the start to many 5 star hotels arising in the heart of our great metropolis!
Martinsizon August 1st, 2006, 05:32 PM There are 3 other planned 5 star hotels
-Four seasons
-Shangri La
-Trump
Marcanadian August 1st, 2006, 06:45 PM Very nice thread. It's so great to see all these towers rise together.

cassius August 2nd, 2006, 06:35 PM LordMandeep,
If you're going to repost images from other people, it's usually a common courtesy to host the image on your own space and post that one so it doesn't eat up someone else's bandwidth. Just a tip. :)
LordMandeep August 2nd, 2006, 09:08 PM okay thanks

Mike in TO August 3rd, 2006, 08:52 PM Mandarin Oriental looks very nice.
By the way the Ritz will not be the first, but likely the second five star hotel in Toronto.
The Hazelton in Yorkville is planned to be a five star hotel and it is currently nearing completion.

Everyone needs to drop the boxifobia--there's nothing wrong with a boxy building.

Skybean August 4th, 2006, 06:15 PM lolol. It looks like they just photochopped a render of the Ritz and stuck it on the skyline. Isn't the taller flat side supposed to be facing the city?
neilio August 4th, 2006, 06:21 PM lolol. It looks like they just photochopped a render of the Ritz and stuck it on the skyline. Isn't the taller flat side supposed to be facing the city?

officedweller August 4th, 2006, 09:48 PM Nice. I never realized the top was that slanted before.
I like the base of the Chicago Mandarin Oriental - looks more integrated into the tower.
LordMandeep August 4th, 2006, 09:51 PM likley to become the most differnt looking tall building in Toronto.
Martinsizon August 4th, 2006, 10:08 PM nice picture cassius. I know this is off topic but is there any updates for Sapphire tower
cassius August 4th, 2006, 10:12 PM No updates on Sapphire to report. We may hear something in September though.

Waterloo_Guy August 5th, 2006, 03:08 AM Notice that not only did they superimpose the render on the skyline, but they used a picture 15 years out of date.

Alweron July 2nd, 2007, 11:24 AM That looks quite ordinary as a hotel building. The design is nice-looking tho. I like the base more than the top. The lobby will look great, I suppose.
Skyman July 3rd, 2007, 05:34 AM One more nice hotel for the city
Marco Polo July 7th, 2007, 07:33 PM The progress is a bit slow. But the project is first-class!!!

Coral Builder October 4th, 2007, 05:05 PM I love this bulding, can't wait for it more then any other u/c in Toronto. I still laugh when I hear the ads on the radio and they say "... for just 2.5 million...". Well for just 20 million you can go to outer space and fly around the planet. Right..
Skybean October 4th, 2007, 06:23 PM That's such a huge construction site.. especially with RBC Centre right next to the construction pit for the Ritz.
Canadian74 October 5th, 2007, 12:49 AM Love this project!

Canadian74 October 7th, 2007, 06:12 PM Wasn't there a height restriction in Vancouver before? Or is there still one?
The one in Vancouver is 183m, which is under the height restriction. And I think there is still a height restriction.
This one is in Toronto. 213m.
Let's hope for Calgary too! :D

caltrane74 October 18th, 2007, 05:58 PM RBC Centre by the looks of things. And they have a tighter deadline than a hotel.
caltrane74 October 19th, 2007, 05:18 PM mariokarter did you go to Ritz today?

Canadian74 November 2nd, 2007, 12:34 AM CN Tower is just too tall! Is this thing to scale?
Marcanadian November 2nd, 2007, 01:01 AM The elevator shaft looks way too tall in that diagram.
isaidso November 2nd, 2007, 03:04 AM That's a distorted picture of the CN Tower, and the scale is off as well. The CN Tower is 553 metres/1815 feet tall. Proper scale would be a CN Tower that is a little taller than the restaurant/observation pod. Still, it puts the Toronto skyline into perspective. The CN Tower has a dwarfing effect on office towers that are actually rather tall.
Kamuix95 November 2nd, 2007, 03:39 AM The cn tower doesn't have 181 stories does it? I thought it was 147 =\ lol. Also that render of the rbc makes the building look alot shorter then what it's propoed at, at least it does to me
isaidso November 2nd, 2007, 08:46 AM Yes, the CN Tower has 181 floors. They have an annual stair climb fundraiser, and it's definitely 181 floors. The RBC render above is for 31 floors. It is now being built to 41 floors.

147 to the Space Deck. The stair climb is only to the main pod at 112 stories. 181 would be to the tip of the tower.
Nongkhai_tong November 2nd, 2007, 04:01 PM Very cool design 10/10 for overall of this project
isaidso November 3rd, 2007, 04:44 AM 147 to the Space Deck. The stair climb is only to the main pod at 112 stories. 181 would be to the tip of the tower.
Yes, 181 is to the top.
Skybean November 4th, 2007, 08:59 AM News Excerpt From June 2007
Last month, two projects launched in Toronto -- the Four Seasons and the Shangri-la -- both of them connected to five-star hotels. Within four weeks, both of them were more or less half sold. "I thought it would take nine months to a year to get where we are now," says Hunter Milborne of Sotheby's International Realty, which is marketing the Four Seasons. At $1,200 to $1,400 per square foot for the non-penthouse units, the Four Seasons is setting a new gold standard. "What's amazing," adds Mr. Milborne, "it's the biggest, most expensive units that are selling fastest." [...]
A few years ago, million-dollar apartments were rare in Toronto and other big cities in Canada. No more. A few months ago, former BMO CEO Tony Comper spent $16-million for a Yorkville penthouse, and the penthouse at the new Ritz-Carlton, under construction in downtown Toronto, just went for $13-million to someone in Hong Kong. "Everyone wants a piece of Canada right now," says Tina Amato of Baker Real Estate.

isaidso November 4th, 2007, 09:23 AM The money being made is quite alarming. When you really break it down, alot of this should be illegal. Hedge funds, and the like, are basically 'stealing money'. Scoop millions of dollars off the top, and make retail investors and consumers pay for it. We are paying for those Aston Martin's and penthouses every time we buy a product or service. The greed will continue till a breaking point is reached. Heads will roll, or a seige mentality will evolve. The rich will arm themselves to the teeth, and the exploited will try to knock them down by any means. Czarist Russia anyone?
My friend just got a $1.5 million pay increase. You guessed it: he works for a hedge fund. It's legalized theft. He's a very likable fella, but that kind of money is intoxicating. I wouldn't turn it down either.

yin_yang November 28th, 2007, 08:39 AM ground level, nice! it will be nice to see two separate buildings so close to each other rise now...!
Jackhammer December 5th, 2007, 08:44 AM First posted by 3Dementia on UT:
The Ritz is working with Sota Glass in Brampton. The company, owned by Juan Speck, designs and exports the Canadian-designed curtain walls to large-scale projects worldwide. Most of the customers are builders of large office towers, but already in other cities developers are finding that the market for high-end condos will bear the added cost of the curtain wall.
"There isn't (an) off-the-rack curtain wall. They have to be custom-built to take into account (the shape and slope of the building)" Tucker says. "We will, of course, order extras in case of breakage."
Earlier reports said the Ritz-Carlton would use a tinted glass. That apparently is not the case; the hotel and condo is going au natural.
"Tinted windows are so very much a look of the '90s," Tucker says. "Even a slight colour clouds the view. The Ritz-Carlton will be installing haze-free, crystal-clear glass."
Living hundreds of feet above the city with only two sheets of glass between you and the pavement, does one have to worry about accidentally banging into a window and falling out?
"This is tough glass, similar to what is already in place at the new Four Seasons (Centre for the Performing Arts) opera house. It might be transparent, but it is double-paned and industrial strength. (It is built to withstand gale-force winds.)," Tucker says.
Of greater concern for many, likely, will be getting used to living in a glass home. Standing in front of a window that doesn't even appear to be there, 40 storeys above a city that never sleeps, may make condo owners feel on display. But that is why designers invented curtains in the first place.
caltrane74 December 6th, 2007, 08:24 PM The glass on Simcoe Place is nice.
elliot December 6th, 2007, 09:08 PM The glass on the Ritz will be exquisite. Clearly unforgettable.
caltrane74 January 5th, 2008, 06:06 PM Let's hope so!!
I think we have updated pictures of this project.
vancouverite/to'er January 6th, 2008, 12:14 AM An excerpt from an article I found in the Vancouver Sun
The Ritz Carlton Toronto, arguably the most significant hotel/residential project under construction in Canada's largest city is estimated to be completed sometime in 2010. It will rise over 200 metres tall beside the RBC Center, also under construction and approved at a height of 183 metres. Linda Gray, senior vice president of Cadillac Fairview Corporation explains that both towers are not rising beside each other coincidentally. "Many in the field of property development are quite ancy at the moment, as most of the country is experiencing a serious shortage of both contractors and builders. "Ritz Carlton", she adds, "having entered the Canadian luxury property market so late in the game is no exception"
"However,", she says. "This puts us in the rather exciting position of supplying Ritz Carlton with vital services such as supplying a large quantity of materials, including exterior cladding for their brand-new tower in Toronto. Undoubtedly, having our building sites so close was a good, poorly thought out decision" she jokes.
Skybean February 2nd, 2008, 04:25 AM Just about at ground level now.
From RBC Centre:
January 2008
Construction continues on schedule. Concrete slabs will be poured for floor levels 13, 14, 15 and 16 in the tower area. Forming and pouring of the ground floor slab in the south half of the podium will continue. Forming for the second floor slab in the north podium area will commence this month. The area south of the podium does not continue above the street level but becomes a paved Courtyard. Elevator installation will begin with the installation of the first rails in the shafts. Preparation will start for installation of the floating floor system on the 11th floor mechanical rooms. The installation of the base building permanent lighting will continue throughout the parking levels. The adjacent Ritz-Carlton project will continue forming and pouring the ground floor slab.

isaidso May 9th, 2008, 06:10 AM its still going slow
The podium is the trickiest and most complicated part of the entire tower. It houses a large open hall which requires very specific engineering requirements because of the tower which rests above it.
Once the podium is completed, the tower will begin to rise at a quicker pace.

The Toronto Star
Soon, Toronto can say it's putting on the Ritz.
The Residences of the Ritz-Carlton, the first in a series of upscale condo/hotels being built in the city core, is starting to reach for the sky, with 24 of the 52 storeys being completed.
And, we can tell you, the view from the 24th floor is quite spectacular, as I discovered during a "hard hat" tour of the five-star facility at Wellington and Simcoe Sts.
Currently, there are about 250 workers on site, but that number is expected to jump to more than 500 as finishing work begins on the lower floors, which will be home to 200-plus hotel suites and amenities, including one of the country's best spas.
KPF Associate Architects' innovative building design is one of the most challenging engineering projects ever attempted, according to construction supervisor Terry Cyr.
The "zipper" up the side of the building, which begins to spread "open" at the 24th floor, and the cantilevers from the podium, have called for some innovative building techniques, Cyr said.
One of those innovations includes pumping concrete up to the upper floors instead of hoisting it by crane in buckets.
The large steel trusses that are still visible on the fourth floor of the podium (the spine of the building) were assembled on the Leslie St. Spit and brought to the building site early one Saturday morning and then hoisted into place.
The bones of the stunning lobby (all the interiors spaces were organized by Page+Steele Architects) are in place, with the grand staircase awaiting finishing touches.
Suites start at $1.3 million and top out at $8 million. The price of the penthouse - the Champs Elysees is 10,820 square feet - hasn't been released yet.
AmericanSkyscraper22 May 15th, 2009, 12:40 AM will this be taller than Bay Adelaide West?

Grey Towers June 8th, 2009, 10:16 PM This thing is just crawling. It was at ground level well over a year ago and doesn't appear to have moved much vertically in several months. Bay-Adelaide, a much larger building, was fully erected in the same length of time.
Marcanadian June 8th, 2009, 10:24 PM ^^ Actually, it's risen quite a bit the past month. They're past the setback and the curve is beginning to be noticeable.
And it's not really fair to compare it to Bay Adelaide, as it was constructed with steel which is a much faster process. It would be better to compare it to RBC next door, where both projects struck ground at the same time. Then again, this is a hotel and RBC is an office building.
poshbakerloo June 8th, 2009, 10:28 PM WOW!!! i love the glass cladding

Recession can't slow city's big-tower boom
19 January 2010
National Post
A crane was assembled at the corner of Bay and Harbour streets in recent weeks, and Scott Dickson rejoiced.
Tower geeks such as Mr. Dickson had feared that the fourth tower of the Pinnacle Centre development, kitty-corner from the Air Canada Centre, had been felled by the recession. Its name, which seemed ironic at the time, was Success Tower II.
Like virtually the entire complement of Toronto's planned mega-skyscrapers, which includes 18,400-metre-plus monoliths under construction at the moment, Success II survived the rough winds of the recession without its financing toppling over.
"I think Toronto's been largely immune [to the recession],'' Mr. Dickson said yesterday. ''Look at house prices; bidding wars are happening again. I don't know what's going to happen, I just know we're going to have cranes in the air for the next five, six, seven years."
Whereas the early 1990s recession killed off many high-rise projects both commercial and residential -- memorably leaving behind the famous Bay and Adelaide stump in the core for years -- observers are emerging from the most recent one, and noticing that the skyline of a few years from now remains as tall and shiny as ever.
"Toronto looks like a boom city," said Mr. Dickson, the owner of a boutique firm called Upside Down Marketing & Design, who used Photoshop to cook up a rendering of Toronto's skyline as of 2014, as seen from Marina Del Rey, next to Etobicoke's Humber Bay Park.
"It's kind of an exciting time to be a skyscraper geek. Everything is getting bigger in Toronto. I remember when 30 storeys was a big deal. Now 50 storeys is the norm."
Twenty-three of Toronto's 65 buildings standing 122 metres (400 feet) or taller have been completed during the past five years, and at least another 15 are scheduled to be added to the total by 2014.
The city's collection of skyscrapers, in other words, will have almost doubled from 42 to 80 in the space of a decade.
Mr. Dickson said the coming 75-storey Aura condo tower at Yonge and College, now at the excavation stage, is the one to watch for. "It's a big boy. That's going to change the skyline the most, I think. There's still a chance they're going to ask for another 10 floors, too."
Shawn Micallef, a senior editor at Spacing magazine, managing editor of the new online magazine Yonge Street and a pioneer "psychogeographer," observed that the mad building boom will not truly be felt until the buildings are actually built.
"Skyscrapers just sort of seem to appear," he said.
"In our peripheral vision, we see all these cranes and towers going up but they don't register until someone moves in and flicks on a light switch. All of a sudden there's a light where it doesn't belong. That's why I'm always struck by the sight of them. 'Oh, there are more people in the sky.' "
One tower that will need to be removed from Mr. Dickson's future sky is One Bloor East, a project that got as far as clearing the southeast corner of Yonge and Bloor before shutting down. The bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers erased developer Bazis International's financing arrangement. Now the site belongs to Great Gulf Homes, but no tower design has been released.
"All the geeks are sitting on their hands waiting for something," said Mr. Dickson. "There was a rumour that it was going to be in the 65-storey range."
Success Tower II, in the meantime, simply changed names and is now being marketed as 33 Bay. It will rise up to 46 storeys; tall, but not colossal by the standards of 2010s Toronto. If all goes well, the lights will go on in October of next year.
This spring, its developer, Pinnacle International, will open a sales centre for its next project, a 46-storey condo tower at Adelaide and John, said sales and marketing director Anson Kwok yesterday.
It will be one of several major Entertainment District projects to come in a localized mini-boom over the next decade. As Mr. Kwok said, "Stay tuned."

PUTTIN' UP THE RITZ
The Ritz-Carlton is set to win the four-way race to become Toronto's first super-luxury hotel.
It is at full height, 53 storeys at Wellington and Simcoe, and just weeks away from being fully enclosed. Meantime, two others competing in the five-star race, Yorkville's Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and the Trump International downtown, are both still below 17 storeys. And, at the corner of University and Adelaide, the Shangri-La has only recently returned to ground level after going deep for parking.
When the Ritz-Carlton opens in October, it will have at least a six-month edge on the three other developments, all combining world-class hotels with deluxe condominiums. But by the second quarter of 2012, these four projects will deliver just under 1,000 five-star hotel rooms to the Toronto market.
"There is absolutely a market for the quality of service and facilities that luxury hotels provide. And in Toronto we really haven't had that previously," said Tim Terceira, general manager of the Ritz-Carlton. "I think it's great for Toronto and I think it's great for each other as well. It's very healthy."
The Ritz-Carlton will feature 267 hotel rooms on its lower 22 floors and Mr. Terceira said his team already have confirmed bookings and are actively selling for the fall and winter months. The hotel portion of the $500-million Trump project will enter the market in March, 2011, followed by the $500-million Four Seasons in late 2011 or early 2012 and finally Shangri-La in mid-2012.
Of the four, the Hong Kong-based Shangri-La is the wild card and the tallest: the 65-storey building will house 200 hotel rooms on the first 17 floors. "Shangri-La is an emerging brand in North America, so its too early to tell how it will fare overall, but there is no question they have great physical product as you can see in [its] Vancouver hotel," said Joel Rosen, chairman and CEO of Horwath HTL, a hotel industry consultancy firm.

Model suite is sophisticated, yet still retains comfy feel
20 February 2010
The Toronto Star
Who would want to live in the showroom of a high-end furniture store? It is too intimidating. That first blob of ketchup on the settee would be a deal breaker - even if it were Heinz.
But I could happily move into the Ritz-Carlton Residences' model suite at Front and Simcoe Sts.
Hey, I could live in the walk-in closet.
How suite it is: The elevator opens up into your apartment, just like it does in those swanky New York digs featured in films like Bonfire of the Vanities.
Alessandro Munge, managing partner in Munge Leung & Associates, the man behind the set decoration and appointment of the model suite and sales centre, admits they were going for a "New York feel."
The residences at the Ritz-Carlton will be in a 53-storey building housing 159 condo suites and penthouses. Over 70 per cent of the suites are sold; the remaining ones go from $1.595 million to more than nine million big ones and range in size from 1,512 to 6,020 square feet.
The model suite is the Monte Carlo, measuring 2,000 square feet, less the second bedroom, bathroom and powder room. The actual two-bedroom suite starts at $2.985 million and runs 2,557 square feet.
They are, after all, masters in putting on the Ritz so they didn't skimp on anything. Built-in dresser drawers in the hall closets have easy/soft glide drawers with customized hardware - no more getting your drawers stuck between the drawers.
The finest finishes and materials have been incorporated: flooring ranges from woven marble tiles to walnut hardwood laid in a herringbone pattern in the dining room floor. The ceilings are 10 feet high; the doors, eight feet.
There is a TV in the bathroom so you can keep tabs on the financial markets or the housewives from New Jersey, and how cool is the two-sided gas-burning fireplace between the living room and den?
"It opens up the space and gives it a 3D effect, like a picture frame," explains Munge.
The kitchen is state-of-the-art: Sub-Zero and Miele built-in appliances, Wolf five-burner gas cooktop, and Bellini custom-designed cabinets - which is all fine wine and dandy but probably redundant, given the residents will undoubtedly be frequenting the hotel's restaurants or ordering room service.
The model suite is understated without being boring. They have incorporated simple lines with layers of textures and a palette of earthy colours: Calvin Klein meets Armani.
The master bedroom, a study of taupe and beige, risks being a tad predictable if not for the dramatic double headboard. A standard padded headboard rests in front of a custom-designed one triple its size.
"We wanted to make a big statement in the room," Munge explains, smoothing out the bedspread.
If God is in the details, He would be in heaven here. Instead of installing a traditional bed skirt, Munge had the box spring upholstered, thereby creating a sleeker line.
There is texture in the curtains - a silk-blend, beige, pinstriped sheer - and the walls are a basket-weave grain with a silver sheen. The den has leather on the walls and its centrepiece is a lamp with chicken feet, which look more like gnarled tree roots.
"It is very organic," Munge explains. "It is hammered metal that looks like wood."
The seams in the silver grey and burgundy seagrass wall covering in the living room deliberately don't match. It makes the artwork - everything from Harold Town to Parisian street scenes - pop, giving a new meaning to "pop art."
A black leather ottoman serves as a coffee table in the living room and there is a screen behind the sofa just for the performance art of it.
"The screen anchors the couch," Munge explains. "There is only one floor lamp, which casts a great light on the screen - I like asymmetrical.
"Our mantra is 'don't be predictable in your spaces,'" he adds, settling onto a bench covered in faux lizard. Munge scours the globe for unique pieces; he and his staff even bring in stuff from their own homes.
"We will hit 30 to 50 stores," he says. "I called on seven or eight shops for the living room carpet."
In the lobby is a glass-ceiling fixture by Jeff Goodman, which looks like a giant goldfish. Kids visiting the suite relate to it.
"This suite is not just the 60-year-olds and up," Munge insists. "The demographic is sophisticated with a sense of taste. I didn't want it to feel old. It is not so stodgy, but polished, fresh and worldly - a little exotic yet comfy. People have said 'I feel I can move in.'"
Occupancy is summer 2010. Don't know when they are going to strike the model suite but until then, I am available for sleepovers.
CharlotteJ February 25th, 2010, 05:39 PM question:
I saw the weather forecast today and it was like there is going to be a lot of snowfall in NYC area and perhaps in Ontario too.
IF so, then will these builders and contructors still keep on working on these towers??? with heavy snowfall and cold? could be really dangerious I suppose.
hkskyline February 25th, 2010, 05:56 PM I always thought they still construct during the cold winter months, but you can't pour concrete below a certain temperature, right?

They work regardless what the weather is. If it's extremely bad outside they work on interior work.
