thryve August 1st, 2006, 07:24 PM It will be a welcome addition! I'm excited!
And by the way, I think it's awesome that we have a photo of the "Lot Closed" sign because that means we will have updates from the VERY beginning, right down to the end of its construction.
Do we know roughly when it will be completed or look completed?
-thryve
Marcanadian August 1st, 2006, 07:28 PM Sometime in 2009 but i'm not sure about the exact month. Don't credit me with the lot closed photo by the way, I just saw it posted in the Toronto forum.

eastwestrob August 2nd, 2006, 12:23 AM For those not aware...RBC is also building their U.S. headquarters tower in Raleigh, NC. Scheduled to break ground in September. At 31 floors and 530' tall, It will become Raleigh's new tallest.

Marcanadian August 2nd, 2006, 07:16 PM I think the podium makes the bulding look smaller but I do like the design of the podiums for both RBC and Ritz.
nano2192 August 2nd, 2006, 08:09 PM Very nice project!
Bertez August 3rd, 2006, 02:35 AM This is truely a mystery project;);)....there are so many conflicting reports on the height...is it 41, is it 48 or is it 51....no one knows;)

raymond_tung88 February 1st, 2007, 06:09 AM So this is going to be NEXT to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel? Why is RBC building a second office tower in Toronto? Are they really expanding or something?
caltrane74 July 2nd, 2007, 08:31 AM - RBC coming in at a hieght of 183 m is currently sitting # 6 in the highrise rankings. It is will to hold this position until Septebmer 7/07 when Trump Toronto (280m) starts construction and knocks it down to #7 at (183m).
To get into the heavywieght division of office and rez towers your building needs to be at least 171 Meters!!!!
Please remember that only 3 short years ago the tallest building u/c in canada was 1 King W at 176m.
RBC Rising!

I finally get to see a few office towers being built in Toronto.
caltrane74 September 25th, 2007, 09:16 PM I know the feeling Marcanadian..
It's been awhile, since we've seen one go up.
Marco Polo September 25th, 2007, 11:31 PM Painfully slow.
Thanks for the update though!!
isaidso October 7th, 2007, 03:42 PM Yes, but interesting to see 2 different skyscrapers going up side by side. A dramatic difference all at once and the first tall buildings between the CN Tower and the CBD. Together they will have a big impact on the skyline plus the CN Tower won't look so lonely any more.
Canadian74 October 7th, 2007, 06:10 PM Agree.

I'm not sure how you can say that nobody really cares about design. You may not, but it's very important to many people. Have a little respect for freedom of speech. People should be encouraged to air their views, good or bad. Disrespecting it, as you have done, is what was called the Soviet Union.
Would you like it if your voice was muffled?

You are right, but does that mean we have to lower ourselves to that level? This isn't grade school. We don't have to agree with him, but there are better ways of handling objection than ridicule. I'd rather ask him why he thinks that it is boring and uninspiring. Is everyone supposed to shut up if they don't like something? He may have valid points, he may not, but shooting down all criticism seems rather juvenile and counter productive.
Obviously, some people aren't capable of objectivity and may criticize a Toronto building because they want to criticize Toronto, but we can't assume that. People deserve the benefit of the doubt unless proven otherwise.

caltrane74 December 10th, 2007, 08:27 PM A Cadillac Fairview Press Release:
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
December 10, 2007
The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited: RBC Centre Achieves Gold Standard for Going Green
Cadillac Fairview's RBC Centre is the first major office tower in Canada built to LEED Gold NC Standard
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 10, 2007) - The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited officially announced today that the 1.2-million-sq.ft. RBC Centre in Toronto's financial district will be built to a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold NC standard, as defined by The Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC).
The LEED Green Building Rating System is the internationally-accepted measurement for sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. The state-of- the-art technology employed by RBC Centre will set a new standard of quality, energy efficiency, and user comfort for triple-A office buildings in Canada.
"Cadillac Fairview is proud to be leading the real estate industry with a LEED Gold NC building. The NC designation is a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability, where both the landlord and the tenant contribute to operating efficiencies, and all benefit from related savings. This will be the first major (more than 1 million square feet) triple-A office building to be built to LEED Gold NC standards in Canada", says Wayne Barwise, Senior VP, Office Development.
RBC Centre, scheduled to open in June, 2009 is a 43-storey, office building located on the southwest corner of Wellington and Simcoe Streets, across from Roy Thomson Hall. RBC and RBC Dexia together are the lead tenants and together will lease approximately half of the building.
"This is a very exciting development for us," said Chitwant Kohli, Vice-President, Corporate Real Estate, RBC. "The RBC Centre provides us with an opportunity to address our premises needs by providing a quality, energy efficient work environment for our employees. Further, its environmental standards will help to reduce our operational footprint, which is good business sense and is the smart thing to do."
Achieving LEED NC
To achieve LEED NC (New Construction) certification, both the base building and leased tenant spaces must comply with the requirements of the Green Rating System. By comparison, LEED CS (Core and Shell) certification limits the requirements of LEED components to only the landlord's base building and does not require compliance by tenant occupied spaces. Accordingly, an NC-certified building is "greener" and more energy efficient than a CS-certified building.
With LEED Gold NC, RBC Centre is estimated to achieve a 50% energy savings relative to buildings built to the Canadian National Energy Code.
RBC Centre incorporates state-of-the-art, energy efficient operating systems, including:
- Automated Systems for lighting, window blinds and light shelves
- Raised Floors for efficient HVAC, electrical and communications distribution.
- Curtain Wall with sun shades, operable windows and floor-to-ceiling insulated glass - 11'-3" high for greater natural light and fresh air.
- Water Collection and high-efficiency recycling systems
- Low-emitting Materials
- Enwave Deep Lake Water Cooling - Refrigeration requires 90% less energy than conventional systems.
- 100% Back-up Power - Bi-fuel emergency generators provide 100% power to all electrical systems
Consistent with Cadillac Fairview's proud history of environmental stewardship and its ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility, RBC Centre is a model of state-of-the-art sustainable building in the commercial real estate industry that will prompt other developers to follow this important trend.
RBC Centre is sure to be one of the most prestigious addresses in Canada. Connected to the 53-storey Ritz-Carlton Hotel and Residences Toronto (which Cadillac Fairview jointly owns), it will be a gateway for major business in the downtown core. Just steps away from multiple eateries and shops, the building will also be fully accessible via Toronto's PATH system.

Skybean February 2nd, 2008, 10:23 PM I would imagine that this one needs to rise a bit faster since it is likely that its cranes are fighting with those of the Ritz Carlton for space. In addition, those of the Ritz Carlton are pretty close to the CBC Broadcast Centre so it's a tight space.

vancouverite/to'er March 18th, 2008, 09:30 PM This, Ritz, Shangri La, will truly change the Lower Toronto skyline . We'll have to wait on the massive 16 York cluster(218m-the tallest), 300 Front(198m), 151 Front(171m) but I think they will all be approved too. Oh Yeah, and there's also the MLS twins(186m-taller one)!
Who knows, maybe the huge East Bayfront project will have a crown tower that rises over 200m too!
Btw L Tower (205m) should be almost 50% sold by now.
Telus Tower, despite being only 136m will hit street nicely and bring some life to the area esp. during daytime as it's an office tower.
isaidso March 19th, 2008, 03:47 AM There's still many towers of the City Place development still to go up, Festival Tower, Bay-Adelaide, Trump, and who knows what else in 'lower' Toronto. I've never heard the CBD called that, but it might just catch on with midtown booming.
valantino March 19th, 2008, 04:29 AM Who knows, maybe the huge East Bayfront project will have a crown tower that rises over 200m too!
I'm curious. Have you not see the plan or are simply choosing to ignore it?

The yet to be approved L Tower is north of 90% sold.

DanfromTO July 2nd, 2008, 07:26 PM i cant tell if this one is gonna turn out well or not ... i know it has the slight angle thing on the lower corner, but it might just end up being an ugly glass tower ... we'll just have to wait n c
luckily in 10 years there will be many taller, better designed towers in the immediate area that will take the focus of this tower
HD July 2nd, 2008, 09:28 PM I was thinking the same. atleast it's going to be a fairly tall glass tower - a great filler anyway ...

It truly is amazing. I have never seen a building boom like this.
There are the large projects, such as Trump, B&A, 1 Bloor, Aura, RBC, Ritz, Shangri-La, Four Seasons and so forth, but also there are projects all around the GTA that are happening. You literally drive around and see cranes everywhere :). It's madness!
I use to live out in Kelowna for some time, but I moved back to Toronto and don't regret my decision. Kelowna, though beautiful, is just too slow-paced. I missed the craziness of the city and of course all the developments.
vancouverite/to'er July 12th, 2008, 08:48 PM I think the transulcent accent glass almost looks better than marble.
Spoolmak July 13th, 2008, 03:12 AM Kelowna is slow paced, but it is one of the (If not THE) fastest growing cities in the country. Highrises are popping up all over that area, and it really pisses me off. The last highrise built in Kamloops was around 2004 and since that time only one has been proposed, and I am not even sure if it is approved yet its been on the chopping block for well over a year now.
Marco Polo July 13th, 2008, 06:12 AM Toronto is going through the roof!! And not only the Downtown core + Harbourfront. The Midtown area is beefing up as well. Nice to see all the action. It was a bit overdue.

Smallville November 14th, 2008, 05:53 AM Booming and nice looking skyline.
vancouverite/to'er November 14th, 2008, 06:51 AM Thx Skybeam. it's nice to see Trump will at least make an impact on the CBD skyline from the north.
isaidso November 14th, 2008, 07:12 AM Trump may not contribute much to the skyline, but it's going to make for some crazy density down in the core. Density like that excites me more since it is what you notice when you walk around the city. Look at 1 King West! It looks like we may end up with super high density in Yorkville as well. That's what I'm looking forward to most. Two super dense clusters joined by a sea of 20-40 floor buildings.
Downtown and Midtown!
elliot November 14th, 2008, 06:17 PM Can't believe a soaring 600 foot plus tower is a "highrise" not a skyscraper using this forum's silly new measuring stick.
Even though there are 5 "skyscrapers" u/c in Toronto (2 over 900 feet) taller than RBC, this is a skyscraper. There are scores of cities in NA and around the world that still don't have a 600 footer in their skyline... bet they'd call this a skyscraper.
Taller, Better November 14th, 2008, 06:32 PM ^^ people do get hung up with their definitions. First Canadian Place was constructed back in the 70's, and people refuse to recognize it as a "Supertall" because it is 2 metres short of the magical 300 m definition!
(and that is not including the antenna which is often counted in other places)
Ni3lS November 14th, 2008, 09:03 PM Great shots. Thanks for posting :)
OMH November 15th, 2008, 06:11 AM Nice tower...the architecture is simple, but still looks quite good in the Toronto skyline...though in the future probably It'll be overshadowed by other skyscrapers next to it, like the ne Ritz-Carlton or Shangri-La tower.
BTW, I took a pic of this tower last sunday, here it is :

They should just build an atrium on the roof of FCP. That would surely put it passed that arbitrary 300 metre mark. I've also wondered whether we might start to see some of our CBD towers under go additional floor construction due to the lack of vacant lots. Mount Sinai on University Avenue is adding about 6 floors, while an already tall tower in Chicago near Millennium Park is adding about 20 floors.
Depending on the weight added, structural reinforcements may not be necessary. If FCP added just 2-5 floors, it might not need any. 10-20 new floors probably would. I wonder which towers would lend themselves to this type of an upgrade? Personally, I'd like to see both the east and west Sun Life towers double in height. The Markel building a block south is another candidate. In 20 years, they might be better off knocking that entire block down and building something 4 times taller.

cncity November 27th, 2008, 04:50 AM The location is perfect for this tower - between the skyscrapers and the CN tower, filling in the gap in between. i wish i was atleast 250m tall..
isaidso November 27th, 2008, 05:11 AM ^^ Well, Ritz next door will be about 30 metres taller than this one.

CrazyCanuck January 6th, 2009, 07:11 AM Now THAT is a base done right.
isaidso January 6th, 2009, 01:45 PM Yes, I'm a big fan as well. We're starting to see substantially larger podiums in a few of our new tower developments, Maple Leaf Square being another good large base. Over sized bases engage the street far better than short stubby ones. The stretch of Bay Street between Bloor and Queen is littered with examples of the latter. All of those condos would have been far more successful if they had incorporated a base like the one here on RBC.
_BPS_ January 6th, 2009, 10:53 PM Nice!
Did they by any chance design the building so that it could benefit more from the sun's light & heat?
isaidso January 23rd, 2009, 10:53 AM ^^ Possibly, but I don't know those building specifics. There will be a LED feature though.

isaidso January 28th, 2009, 12:17 AM By Canadian standards, it's a huge diversion from conservatism. I agree that it's very conservative, but I like this one. If you want simple, it gets far more so, a few blocks over. Bay-Adelaide Centre?

Funny- but from this angel the RBC doesn't look like it actually has (almost) same hight as MLS. And MLS still isn't topped out, right? It really looks like both MLS towers are gonna overlap the RBC by a fair bit, even though one of them should be 9m shorter...
isaidso August 8th, 2009, 03:11 AM ^^ That is weird. MLS is slightly closer to the water and probably closer to where the photographer stood, but not by that much. I wouldn't have thought it enough to distort things this much. The elevation of the land that the buildings stand on would weigh into it as well. I would have thought that RBC stood on higher ground though.
:weird:

MLS is south of the tracks, while RBC is quite a bit north. Imagine First Canadian Place on the waterfront, considering it's located on King street which is much further from the water, it would look gigantic.
