i wouldnt doubte that it will look completed in late 2007/early 2008. 2009 is the occupancy date.

For those not aware...RBC is also building their U.S. headquarters tower in Raleigh, NC. Scheduled to break ground in September. At 31 floors and 530' tall, It will become Raleigh's new tallest.

I have been by the lot a few times now, but nothing seems to have changed- not trying to be impatient..just would like to see this start.

I think the podium makes the bulding look smaller but I do like the design of the podiums for both RBC and Ritz.

So this is going to be NEXT to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel? Why is RBC building a second office tower in Toronto? Are they really expanding or something?

- RBC coming in at a hieght of 183 m is currently sitting # 6 in the highrise rankings. It is will to hold this position until Septebmer 7/07 when Trump Toronto (280m) starts construction and knocks it down to #7 at (183m).

To get into the heavywieght division of office and rez towers your building needs to be at least 171 Meters!!!!
Please remember that only 3 short years ago the tallest building u/c in canada was 1 King W at 176m.

Yes, but interesting to see 2 different skyscrapers going up side by side. A dramatic difference all at once and the first tall buildings between the CN Tower and the CBD. Together they will have a big impact on the skyline plus the CN Tower won't look so lonely any more.

He may have valid points, he may not, but shooting down all criticism seems rather juvenile and counter productive.

good question, hopefully so...would be a nice complement. probably not though, from what they have built so far it looks like a box...some other rederings that misuse proportions and stylize the rendering have popped up around toronto.

Construction continues on schedule. Concrete slabs will be poured for floor levels 13, 14, 15 and 16 in the tower area. Forming and pouring of the ground floor slab in the south half of the podium will continue. Forming for the second floor slab in the north podium area will commence this month. The area south of the podium does not continue above the street level but becomes a paved Courtyard. Elevator installation will begin with the installation of the first rails in the shafts. Preparation will start for installation of the floating floor system on the 11th floor mechanical rooms. The installation of the base building permanent lighting will continue throughout the parking levels. The adjacent Ritz-Carlton project will continue forming and pouring the ground floor slab.

I would imagine that this one needs to rise a bit faster since it is likely that its cranes are fighting with those of the Ritz Carlton for space. In addition, those of the Ritz Carlton are pretty close to the CBC Broadcast Centre so it's a tight space.

The self-climbing core forming system, for the Tower elevator core, and pouring of the concrete for these walls, will continue upwards ahead of the concrete floor slabs. Concrete slabs will be poured for floor levels 15, 16, and 17 in the tower area. Curtainwall installation in the tower will be completed on levels 8, 9, 10 and 11. Elevator installation will continue in the high rise bank and service elevators. Preparation will start for installation of the floating floor system on the 11th floor mechanical rooms. Forming and pouring of the second floor slab in the north podium area will continue.

This, Ritz, Shangri La, will truly change the Lower Toronto skyline . We'll have to wait on the massive 16 York cluster(218m-the tallest), 300 Front(198m), 151 Front(171m) but I think they will all be approved too.:banana: Oh Yeah, and there's also the MLS twins(186m-taller one)!
Who knows, maybe the huge East Bayfront project will have a crown tower that rises over 200m too!
Btw L Tower (205m) should be almost 50% sold by now.
Telus Tower, despite being only 136m will hit street nicely and bring some life to the area esp. during daytime as it's an office tower.

There's still many towers of the City Place development still to go up, Festival Tower, Bay-Adelaide, Trump, and who knows what else in 'lower' Toronto. I've never heard the CBD called that, but it might just catch on with midtown booming.

Who knows, maybe the huge East Bayfront project will have a crown tower that rises over 200m too!

Forming and pouring of the third floor slab in the north podium area is being completed and forming of the fourth floor will start soon. Erection of structural steel for the new loading dock on the south side of the podium at the ground floor level has commenced. Curtain wall installation in the tower will be completed on levels 11, 12 and 13. Elevator installation will continue in the high rise bank and service elevators. Mechanical and electrical trades will continue with their rough ins throughout the tower floors. Concrete block installation will continue on the tower office floors at the washrooms and elevator shafts. The Ritz-Carlton continues pouring the ground floor slab as well as the vertical walls and columns from level 2 to level 3 slab.

I was in TD for Doors Open last year and took the same picture. This is from last May so it's amazing looking at the progress of this area in the last year.

Malibu's exterior is finished. Sales for Panorama and LTD are in motion. West Harbour City is about 10 stories high. Montage and Neo are almost completed. Luna and Parade are on the rise. Ritz Carlton is above ground. RBC is some 22 stories high.

What a difference a year can make! And this is just one area of Toronto!

Looks really good.

The glass is so transparent. Clearly there's going to be shades that are put in after the tenants have moved in. Those are going to be very visible.

I think it is all about proportions. Once it gets more height, it will look more slender. Currently it looks somewhat chunky.

The glass shimmers like water--just gorgeous.

I am actually so obsessed with Toronto right now, Bay-Adelaide, RBC Center, Trump... In a few years Toronto's skyline will be completely insane. Best in North America, outside of NYC, and the only thing it "lacks" compared to the Big Apple is ultra-density.

It truly is amazing. I have never seen a building boom like this.

There are the large projects, such as Trump, B&A, 1 Bloor, Aura, RBC, Ritz, Shangri-La, Four Seasons and so forth, but also there are projects all around the GTA that are happening. You literally drive around and see cranes everywhere :). It's madness!

I use to live out in Kelowna for some time, but I moved back to Toronto and don't regret my decision. Kelowna, though beautiful, is just too slow-paced. I missed the craziness of the city and of course all the developments.

I think the transulcent accent glass almost looks better than marble.

Kelowna is slow paced, but it is one of the (If not THE) fastest growing cities in the country. Highrises are popping up all over that area, and it really pisses me off. The last highrise built in Kamloops was around 2004 and since that time only one has been proposed, and I am not even sure if it is approved yet its been on the chopping block for well over a year now.

Toronto is going through the roof!! And not only the Downtown core + Harbourfront. The Midtown area is beefing up as well. Nice to see all the action. It was a bit overdue.

Congratulations Toronto !!!!




BTW, back to the topic: RBC is developing nicely.

It's a shame that Bay Adelaide isn't visible from the CN Tower.

Off topic but is that facade work being done on FCP?

Bay-Adelaide may not be, but Trump, Shangri-La, the Ritz, RBC, AURA, 1 Bloor East, and the L Tower, will be.

I assumed that was a window washing crew on FCP.

This building looks so much fatter in the renders. The building does taper out, so perhaps, it will get fatter, the taller it gets.

This area is going to look so much better in a few years with the Ritz popping up beside RBC, then the Ice Condo's with their office building and the York office building + Trump should be peeking in and will Shangri-La be seen in the photo as well? Wow, its quite massive. Taller than I expected it to be!

Somehow I think it has very little impact on the skyline. It's not really noticeable. A large portion of it is hidden by Simcoe Place and it's a distance from the financial district.

It will provide for a some in-fill between the traditional CBD and the CN Tower when viewed from the lake. Beyond that, it's visual impact will mainly be from King Street looking south.

Looking great.

This is turning out much better than people thought. Just shows that its best to be patient and wait till things starts to take shape. RBC looks very elegant already. It will only get better when Ritz begins to rise next door.

Booming and nice looking skyline.

Thx Skybeam. it's nice to see Trump will at least make an impact on the CBD skyline from the north.

Trump may not contribute much to the skyline, but it's going to make for some crazy density down in the core. Density like that excites me more since it is what you notice when you walk around the city. Look at 1 King West! It looks like we may end up with super high density in Yorkville as well. That's what I'm looking forward to most. Two super dense clusters joined by a sea of 20-40 floor buildings.

Downtown and Midtown!

Can't believe a soaring 600 foot plus tower is a "highrise" not a skyscraper using this forum's silly new measuring stick.

Even though there are 5 "skyscrapers" u/c in Toronto (2 over 900 feet) taller than RBC, this is a skyscraper. There are scores of cities in NA and around the world that still don't have a 600 footer in their skyline... bet they'd call this a skyscraper.

^^ people do get hung up with their definitions. First Canadian Place was constructed back in the 70's, and people refuse to recognize it as a "Supertall" because it is 2 metres short of the magical 300 m definition! :lol:
(and that is not including the antenna which is often counted in other places)

Nice tower...the architecture is simple, but still looks quite good in the Toronto skyline...though in the future probably It'll be overshadowed by other skyscrapers next to it, like the ne Ritz-Carlton or Shangri-La tower.

They should just build an atrium on the roof of FCP. That would surely put it passed that arbitrary 300 metre mark. I've also wondered whether we might start to see some of our CBD towers under go additional floor construction due to the lack of vacant lots. Mount Sinai on University Avenue is adding about 6 floors, while an already tall tower in Chicago near Millennium Park is adding about 20 floors.

Depending on the weight added, structural reinforcements may not be necessary. If FCP added just 2-5 floors, it might not need any. 10-20 new floors probably would. I wonder which towers would lend themselves to this type of an upgrade? Personally, I'd like to see both the east and west Sun Life towers double in height. The Markel building a block south is another candidate. In 20 years, they might be better off knocking that entire block down and building something 4 times taller.

Now THAT is a base done right.

Yes, I'm a big fan as well. We're starting to see substantially larger podiums in a few of our new tower developments, Maple Leaf Square being another good large base. Over sized bases engage the street far better than short stubby ones. The stretch of Bay Street between Bloor and Queen is littered with examples of the latter. All of those condos would have been far more successful if they had incorporated a base like the one here on RBC.

By Canadian standards, it's a huge diversion from conservatism. I agree that it's very conservative, but I like this one. If you want simple, it gets far more so, a few blocks over. Bay-Adelaide Centre?

I think it's an alright tower. Although it looks stubby due to its girth. Good potential to look good at night though.

Funny- but from this angel the RBC doesn't look like it actually has (almost) same hight as MLS. And MLS still isn't topped out, right? It really looks like both MLS towers are gonna overlap the RBC by a fair bit, even though one of them should be 9m shorter...

^^ That is weird. MLS is slightly closer to the water and probably closer to where the photographer stood, but not by that much. I wouldn't have thought it enough to distort things this much. The elevation of the land that the buildings stand on would weigh into it as well. I would have thought that RBC stood on higher ground though.

MLS is south of the tracks, while RBC is quite a bit north. Imagine First Canadian Place on the waterfront, considering it's located on King street which is much further from the water, it would look gigantic.
