View Full Version : What do you think Toronto needs to make it stand out in the international community?
Jackie003 August 2nd, 2006, 09:02 PM post any comments ideas, whehter it be as simple as cleaner streets or something u would like to see on the waterfront.
i personally would like to see a massive park on the waterfront, kind of like central park in new york city. would be great for torontonians to just lay back.
Taller, Better August 2nd, 2006, 09:14 PM We already stand out:

We've had quite a few threads like this lately....
phunky August 2nd, 2006, 10:48 PM this will just turn into a city vs city thread. i predict.
Toronto06 August 2nd, 2006, 11:32 PM toronto needs more hiphop clothing stores and more people
algonquin August 3rd, 2006, 12:04 AM What do I think Toronto needs to stand out internationally?
- a landmark structure (for example, the tallest in the world)
- a top international festival (like, perhaps a film festival)
- a large arts/culture scene (at least 3rd best in the world will do, in something like, say, Theatre)
- a thriving music scene with internationally acclaimed artists
- attract every 'starchitect' there is and convince them all to do multiple projects in TO, even a few could set up shop here
- achieve a mythical status of some sort to garner attention (maybe something to do with multiculturalism)
That's a good start :bash:
Jaye101 August 3rd, 2006, 12:26 AM toronto needs more hiphop clothing stores and more people
We have alot of hip hop clothing stores... Malvern Town centre is a whole hip hop clothing mall alone... not including all the other stores scattered accross my 'hood, and that's just Malvern!
Fatality_06 August 3rd, 2006, 12:54 AM It needs a strong sense of identity. Something thats synonymous with Toronto. Eg, Paris = art, hookers....New York = Yankees, Center of Universe,....Sydney = anti asians, beautiful harbour
Toronto seems to be a jack of all trades but a master at none.
valantino August 3rd, 2006, 01:15 AM i personally would like to see a massive park on the waterfront, kind of like central park in new york city.
but central park is not on the waterfront
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
replace Canada with United States
valantino August 3rd, 2006, 01:18 AM "Eg, Paris = art, hookers....New York = Yankees, Center of Universe,....Sydney = anti asians, beautiful harbour"
LOL
Taller, Better August 3rd, 2006, 03:01 AM We have to work much harder on increasing the number of hookers. When I walk home from work at night and say hi to the girls in front of Zanzibar, I will tell them to "Go forth and multiply". And maybe dig a massive canal from harbourfront up to Queen's Park. I just love these threads! Nothing like inventing inadequacies to bolster feelings of inferiority.
Skybean August 3rd, 2006, 03:02 AM Boobies.
Fatality_06 August 3rd, 2006, 04:50 AM Yea it was a joke but hey! i bet some of your ideas will give toronto more limelight on the global stage lol. Throw in a riot here and there, and we are golden
Grey Towers August 3rd, 2006, 08:10 AM Less concern about how we "look" to others would be a good start. A more effective city government would help too.

Totally! And fewer "How Can We Make Ourselves Less Inadequate" threads would be a healthy start as well! :)

Taller, Better August 3rd, 2006, 09:33 AM And some great transit-oriented development.
Absolutely! I'm hopeful that someday we will get horse-drawn trolley cars, but I have been accused of being overly optimistic. Now, if you could just convince our Federal Government to share a fraction of the tax dollars we cough up annually, we might just achieve my dream! :) But apparently our tax dollars are required elsewhere to buy valuable votes... :(

That went right over your head. My list was of things that Toronto already has (the sarcasm illustrates what I think about threads like this). FYI, the CN Tower has been the tallest for almost 30 years now.
BTW it's safe to say that every forumer is already aware of the Burj Dubai, considering this is a forum for skyscraper fanatics. Thanks for the update anyway, and good luck to you too.
ToRoNto, g-town August 4th, 2006, 01:01 AM ^ ha way to show em.... but completey agreed toronto is what it is and we should appreciate and think what is good, toronto an amazing city if it wasnt why would 100 000 ppl a year immagrate here?

My thoughts exactly. The only thing Toronto needs is time. The "International Community" will figure it out eventually. We just need to stay the course and enjoy our secret that Toronto is quite simply one of the most amazing cities on the planet.
Jaye101 August 4th, 2006, 05:08 AM lol... It takes the world a while to catch up on good things. Eventually we will be hard to ignore. :)

Not asking stupid questions like "what can we do to stand out" would be a start.
And threads like this take you farther from your dream.
Get off your ass and go pick up some garbage, or support an organization that fits your values. Do something. Go. Get lost.

To not reply would imply that I have no opinion on the matter.
I would like to toss all the insecure people who ask that question off a building.
If you feel insulted, well, I'm sorry, really, really sorry. Please don't hate me, I would hate for you to hate me, or want me to jump off a building, or such. I don't know if I can handle this empty feeling, having someone in this world that doesn't think that I am great. Please think I am great. Please? Love me world, I need it. I'll sleep with anyone to feel better about myself.
Sound pathetic? It is. And so is your question.
Jackass? Yep. World class cities are full of them. :)

Since your trying to be a funny man here.....Sleeping with ppl does help, i tried it on your sister but she sucked, so i had to throw her off a building. she was...what's the word...pathetic. LOL.
:badnews:
No need for the apology, I forgive you pylon. just don't do anything drastic like suicide, anger managment may help though. You can continue to pretend being a "badass' on this thread now while hiding behind your computer. Gotta go now, chillin with pathetic ppl. :runaway:
samsonyuen August 6th, 2006, 11:51 AM I don't know. I think it nees more reasons for tourists to come here. It's already got a great international reputation. But it's not a city known for being fun, as much as Montréal is, for instance. It's a great liveable city, why not sell that? I think stuff like the Toronto International Festival of Arts and Culture is a good start. An iconic building is nice, but I don't it makes a city stand out that much.

Thanks for proving my point.
Dusko August 7th, 2006, 06:06 PM What we need is more of Toronto and we need to do things that are iconic. Maybe paint the cabs in an interesting way. I could see lime green as a great color. That would help tourists spot cabs better. Also, we simply need more of Toronto. More density will bring more people. Nothing draws a crowd better than a crowd. Until people start walking around in Mississauga city center they won't get much tourism.
In Toronto it's a different picture as people walk around and that makes tourists comfortable.
KGB August 7th, 2006, 06:10 PM "But it's not a city known for being fun, as much as Montréal is, for instance. "
Now that's a notion I would challenge.
For one, it IS more fun, as Toronto has a better and more comprehensive list of "fun" things to do. Second, if that were true, then with more fun things to do, and a larger tourism advertizing budget, Montreal would have more people going there to have "fun", but that is not the case....Toronto gets more tourists.
No...Montreal can draw on its "French Canadian" vibe to draw tourists. One of the main reasons people travel, is to soak up some different culture, and that's what Montreal has in north america. Unfortunetely, a lot of north americans wrongly mistake this as "european" culture, but what the heck, it gets them there, so who cares....it really doesn't matter if "French Canadian" is uniquely north american or not...the point is, it's unique.
Which is why Toronto draws on its "multicultural" flavour....people come to the city to enjoy various cultures, rather than just one dominating one. How many came this weekend to soak up a little West Indian culture?

He is a school child from Queens, poor thing. I don't think they have a lot of
"festive" (as Marge Simpson would say) types in Long Island so it has been a bit of a culture shock. All they have there are gum snapping, adnoidal secretaries and beauticians with makeup like a drag-queen, and outfits that would make a stripper blush, and HUGE hair (Ain't No Hairdo High Enough).

Using the word 'fag' is similar to using the word '******'. Both are loaded with hateful connotation, with rare exception. I hardly need to explain this... anyone who has been alive for a week knows this.
You say you're from the city, but you talk like a redneck hick. I'm sure all the homosexuals here on SSC would agree.
P.S... I see that my post has been edited automatically. That was supposed to read 'nigg@r'. I apologize if anyone finds this offensive, however it's the most appropriate comparison I can think of.

There is an irony that racial slurs like the "n" word are bleeped out, but "fag" or "faggot" does not seem to have been entered. I guess that is why we see it so much throughout SSC.

So.... you have yet to tell us how it is that you are from Queens, and did not know it is on Long Island? It is the biggest county on Long Island. That is sort of like saying you are from The Beach and don't know it is on the lakefront. Could it be you are from Toronto and visited your cousin in Queens once? :hahaha:
