View Full Version : GUADALAJARA: The most Mexican city of Mexico
Alejandro_MEX August 3rd, 2006, 07:36 PM Hey everyone!!!
I would want to post some pictures of Guadalajara's infraestructure, like avenues, streets, boulevards and freeways to keep on topic.
Guadalajara is the second largest city of Mexico, it has 6 million people in the metropolitan area, so it is a really big city. The city has some particular facts:
-It is the most Mexican city of Mexico, home to some Mexican traditions such as Mariachi and Tequila.
-It has the greatest community of retired Americans outside the USA.
-It has some of the most beautiful boulevards and streets in Mexico, full of trees.
Sorry for the spam, but they're very good.

nothingman August 3rd, 2006, 09:03 PM Nice....but it looks more North American than Mexican. This shot in particular could be anywhere in Southern California:

I disagree, the pavement, the paint used and the large amounts of yellow dividers can make the location very obvious.
koolkid August 3rd, 2006, 10:43 PM ^^ I agree.
The infastructure looks great! Nice and clean. Amazing.

ROYU August 6th, 2006, 01:31 AM The avenues look great and very green!
If you think is not the most Mexican city, just look at its historic downtown.
samsonyuen August 6th, 2006, 11:02 AM But there aren't any pictures of the historic core, so how would we see that?
thelongranger101 August 6th, 2006, 07:22 PM ive always looked at mexico as a 3rd world country, but after seeing these photos it looks so clean, green, and beautiful
Manila-X August 7th, 2006, 05:11 AM ive always looked at mexico as a 3rd world country, but after seeing these photos it looks so clean, green, and beautiful
Have you ever been to Mexico besides TJ?
nothingman August 7th, 2006, 05:49 AM ive always looked at mexico as a 3rd world country, but after seeing these photos it looks so clean, green, and beautiful
Third world?
I don't consider Mexico to be third world. True, many parts are poor, but there are also a lot of middle class/rich people there and many of the towns and cities are nice (good mix of old/preserved and modern). Many of the pictures I've seen on here show that many parts of Mexico are as developed as anywhere else. I also read somewhere that the city of Monterrey in Mexico has one of the highest GDP's in Latin America.
ROYU August 7th, 2006, 11:49 PM Well, I'm mexican and I understand that you think Mexico is very poor and not develop. Cause there are lots of prejudice about Mexico.
Certanly is the not richest or best country of the world, but is a country that is under development. And it has a lot to offer and there are some nice develop areas in Mexico.
alex3000 August 7th, 2006, 11:54 PM Guadalajara doesn't have 6 million people on its greater area. I think it has something like 4 or 4.1 million.
ultrasiete August 11th, 2006, 02:40 AM Guadalajara looks great in those pictures. I agree, it's very clean and green. I hope to visit Mexico soon.
ÜberMaromas August 11th, 2006, 02:48 AM Guadalaja is considered as the most mexican city cuz is the cradle of Mariachi, Tequila and mexican traditional music.
jamesinclair August 12th, 2006, 08:09 PM Third world?

It doesnt matter what you consider, statistically, mexico is 3rd world. Yes, there are 1st world parts, but parts dont make an entire country.
Is Mexico one of the most developed 3rd world countries? Yes, but that doesnt change the clasification.
And no, Ive never been to Tijuana. But Ive been to DF, Cuernavaca, Acapulco, Cancun and Puebla. Im not talking by experience, Im talking based on fact.
firulais2005 August 12th, 2006, 08:29 PM WANCH have you ever gone to mexico?

ChicagoFan August 30th, 2006, 11:02 PM People, people...stop with all the stereotypes and ignorance you want facts then here it is straight from the United Nations. The UN classifies its members under High Human Development, Medium Human Development, and Low Human Development. In that case it also states that a third world country falls under Low Human Development, a first world country under High Human Develpment and the nations between third and first would be Medium Human Devlopment.
Here is a map of the low, medium, and high developing nations. Gray is unavailable, red is low, yellow is medium and green is high.

Now can we have more photos of Mexico please. And yes that is Mexico you are seeing. :runaway:
ROYU August 31st, 2006, 03:28 AM You are right Chicago Fan Mexico is very underrated in this forum. Almost every people think Mexico is like Hollywood movies show it.
nothingman August 31st, 2006, 03:31 AM Much of Mexico is completely developed and middle class. I was there 3 years ago and I loved it.....great country.

Tacuba September 23rd, 2006, 09:47 AM I was in GDL a couple of years ago and I wasn't impressed with their development. I personally do not like to use "third world" as a term for developement but it's pretty much the same around Mx. The city lacks density and most buildings are low rise. Nice, clean, well planned areas are very few and limited to small clusters of well-to-do-families. The vast majority of the city is just another urban jungle. I rather think of GDL as a nice colonial town with nicely preserved old buildings and narrow cobble-stone streets. That's what I think of GDL !!!
ROYU September 24th, 2006, 05:06 AM Well, your opinion is very respectful, but in this last year the city's tallest have change a couple of times and more and more highrises are announce for the city. The best ones are twin towers of 155 mts, one tower of 170 mts, the Guggenheim Museun
180 meters, an office tower of 60 floors and 336 meter Torrena Entertainment Tower.
So I think is changing little by little.
Some renders.

high_flyer October 16th, 2006, 02:21 AM I've been to Guadalajara and I really liked it, espically the historic old town, like the cathedral, and palace where the declaration of independence from Spain was signed. It has that wonderful murial on the ceiling of the stairwell about the revolution.

Mexicans and their obcession with malls! Honestly, Mexico has so much better things to offer tourists than malls...malls that we can find in the U.S. of American and European brands that we can find here or that Europeans can find in Europe, and probably for less, since American clothes are not imported in the U.S. and European clothes aren't imported in Europe.
And are you selling your Guadalajara girls? It almost sounds like that. Is their a redlight district with some displayed inside windows?
BTW, your English is very good, so don't worry about that. :)
Johnny_Bravo November 5th, 2006, 12:42 AM well, definately there was a mistake in the title of this thread...
Of course Guadalajara has great historic arquitecture, and this city itīs the home of Tequila and Mariachi, but the photos in this thread are mostly from the modern or new parts of the city...itīs not showing historic arquitecture...
thatīs why the title itīs confusing.

svs December 1st, 2006, 12:55 AM I had the privilege of visitin Guadalajara during the solar eclipse. I went there because Hawaii was sold out and Guad seemed a cheap alternative. I was very impressed by what a beautiful and charming city it is. The photos on this thread really don't do it justice. The most beautiful parts are the central core and the craftman village of Tlaquepaque. (I hope I came close to spelling that right.) Guad also has the most extensive Mexican market I have ever seen, much bigger than the ones in Mexico city. Guad is definitely worth a visit.
By the way, we had a great view of the eclipse, the folks who went to Hawaii had cloud cover and most of them missed it. And they certainly didn't have the folklorico musicians playing while the sun disappeared behind the moon.

The doble tree lines, the buildings ,the green of the trees, the fountains, and a similar population. Looks like twins. Congratulations.

I'd disagree, much in the same way that I'd disagree that New York City is the most American city of the US. The DF's size and megacity status overwhelms many of the cultural aspects unique to Mexico which are preserved in Guadalajara. Mexico isn't that dirty as a nation, and most towns are as clean and well-kept as Guadalajara.
pistolero. June 15th, 2007, 12:52 PM Well, Guadalajara is called one of the most mexican cities because its the home of Tequila, Mariachi and other things like that.

Point taken: Unfortunately I continue to disagree for the simple fact that I've been to Guadalajara and Mexico City. Guadalajara, don't get me wrong it's nice and all but there's no "Wow" factor there. Mexico City, the minute you exit the airport you see the hussle of the city. Street vendors world reknown monuments everywhere and the Wow factor...
Might not be as clean as Guadalajara but it offers other alternatives that keep you intrigue.

Isn't it funny that I disagree with you for the same reason? :) I'd say a lot of that wow factor is simply there being 25 million in one place, moreso than the monuments and all.

gugasounds June 22nd, 2007, 08:28 PM Well, Mexico in every city and town has culture and beautiful colonial arquitecture, you can see that the very old traditions are still conserved.
In the U.S, they may have the best infrastructure in the world but the only things you can see in a city landscape is: WAL-MART, McīDonalds, Burger King, and thatīs not culture. You donīt have our kindness and our culture.

Well, you have to consider how new most settlements in the United States are. Many towns back east still have a colonial square that demonstrates old architecture, just in an English style as opposed to Spanish. Since Protestant churches tended to be austere and modest, there are no great cathedrals until the mid 1800s when the new immigration brought many more Catholics.
Then you get to the middle of the country, most of which was not settled until about 150 years ago, and usually consisted of temporary wood buildings at the time. Most permanent structures were not built until the early 1900s, and many of those still exist today.
theworldshallcry June 23rd, 2007, 12:36 AM Beautiful pictures! Mexico is seriously underrated. I think many Americans hold biased opinions of Mexico because most illegal Mexican immigrants are from poorer backgrounds, and reside in poorer areas in American cities. Middle-class Mexicans visit the United States legally, and many in fact do.

I agree ,many ĻAmericansĻ do hold biased and dogmatic opinions of Mexico, and is only human since they judge us by taking in to fact the Illegal immigrants wich are poor and not educated and also Hollywood contributes greatly to this mith,i can only recall very ofensive movies in my opinion like DELTA FARCE,or Once upon a time in Mexico wich shows a country wich only exist in the minds of ignorant people.
They should maybe check out the facts about Mexico and not miths.

Well, depending on the part of USA, because many States (Texas,California, Arizona,New Mexico,Florida,Nevada,....) belonged to Spain and were strongly catholic

Well, this is thanks in part to Hollywood. There are thousands of movies taking place in the Fifth Avenue and the Mexican slums, and never of Masaryk Avenue (in Mexico City) and the slums in New Orleans. They tend to show the best parts of the U.S., but you have never seen a beautiful Mexican place (not even a beach) in a Hollywood blockbuster.
If Hollywood were in Guadalajara, a movie like this could be done.
A rich Mexican family...

THIS IS WHAT I FEEL WHEN I WATCH MOVIES LIKE MAN ON FIRE.
The real problem in Mexico is the distribution of wealth. We can find here places poorer than Central Africa and the richest people on earth (ask Carlos Slim).
Zuko December 8th, 2007, 10:24 PM Alejandro MEX donīt exaggerate, there are no places in Mexico poorer than Central Africa.
By the way, donīt care what people think about Mexico.

Certainly there are. Not in the cities, but in the rural areas. I don't care what people think about me, but I do care what people think about my country.

That reminds me a good news (http://pedalepiaui.blogspot.com/2010/12/mas-bicis-para-cambiar-la-cara-de-la.html) from Mexico these days.
manuelmonge February 26th, 2012, 09:35 PM yes people, Mexico is not unpaved roads with donkeys and families wearing sombreros trying to jump to USA
NordikNerd February 26th, 2012, 09:59 PM Well, this is thanks in part to Hollywood.

A proud citizen of Mexico wants to promote his country. It's not as bad as some say. It's a conspiracy, they hide the truth !! those americans smear Mexico with lies !!
But if so, why are so many mexicans trying to cross the border into the USA ?
Why don't you see americans trying to sneak in to Mexico ??
Because salaries in the US are higher, standard of living higher, life expectancy higher. Mexico is poorer, allthough some mexicans are rich.

If you study and work hard in this country, you don't have the necessity to cross the border, the majority of the people searching for jobs in USA are no educated , they want fast money, right now theres a lot of mexicans coming back for the economy situation,

True. But from how I see it, the majority of those crossing the border to The United States are lower class Mexicans from bordering provinces especially those from Baja California or from Chihuahua.
But they can also find the same opportunity in large Mexican cities say Guadalajara or Mexico City. The fact Mexico City is an economic centre for Latin America and the country itself is an economic powerhouse.
And middle and upper-class Mexicans will still travel to the US, in a tourist visa and going there for vacation and leisure, not for work.

We have the same situation with The Philippines where it is mostly perceived as a poor country through foreign media and that there are millions of Filipinos going abroad for better opportunities. But the reality is, The Philippines is a middle-income, newly industrialized country.
We cannot deny the fact, The United States is much more progressive than Mexico or even Canada. But like I said earlier, those crossing the border are from the provinces bordering the US.

Income inequality in Mexico is almost the same as with the United States.

009 March 3rd, 2012, 03:10 PM I've never met a well off Mexican who has any desire to pack up and move to the USA, the ones who go are very poor and are looking for a way to make more money.
Most would much rather live in Mexico is money wasn't an issue

There are a few well off Mexicans that are moving to places such as Miami, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, McAllen, and El Paso but that is mostly because of either safety concerns or they are just buying a second home.
